[Q] Best modem compatible with CM7? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all. So I've been running CM7 for a few months, and most recently also flashed the Kang ROM. However, also for the past few months, I can't remember if before or right after CM7, I've been having a very distorted call quality, as well as data connectivity disappearing, only coming back with a reboot. I was wondering if someone could direct me to the best modem/radio combo I should be using... I figured this is most likely the culprit, though I'm in the dark. I believe I'm currently using EC09... my baseband version under "About phone" is S:i500.04 V.EC09
Even if EC09 is the newest modem I could use, what else is compatible with CM7? I feel like the biggest noob ever, but could someone explain to me exactly what the modem and radio are specifically responsible for?
When I find a modem/radio I'd like to flash, can I just do that over what I have now, or do I have to flash an earlier build like Eclair or something and rebuild from there?

Flash the EH03 radio. You can download it from me I will post a link. Use Odin to flash it right over what you currently have. It will not mess with your ROM so no need to do anything else but flash this file

Thank you so I don't have to wipe a single thing before flashing? Should this remedy the call quality, loss of data connectivity, or both?

I didn't see much of a difference between those two radios on the CM7 kang, but it's worth a shot. MTD roms tend to have data issues from time to time, but if you lose connectivity, toggling airplane mode on and off usually worked for me, as opposed to fully rebooting. Call quality could be related to your signal strength and other factors on the other end of the call. Unless all calls are distorted?

Yes, all calls are equally distorted. Significantly worse than the phone originally was

No you don't have to touch a thing with your ROM. Odin that file and it will reboot to your rom with the new radio. I'm running eh03 on ics build 6 and it's great

the radio will not make a differenc on call audio quality...use glitch v13.1, the audio is much better than the kernel that comes with cm7.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'll install glitch as well as the new radio.
I asked before, but can someone please explain to me exactly what the modem and radio are responsible for and what advantage there is to updating them?
Also, i've never installed a modem or radio without installing current builds of both at the same time. Will it matter that upon installing the above radio, my radio will be more current than my modem?

Your radio and modern are actually the same thing. It can improve your signal/connection from Verizon so it it important to have a reliable radio. EH03 is a stock Verizon radio so we know it's reliable and the advantage is knowing you have a good reliable radio

Service problems

I posted this on the froshedyo page too.
For about a week now my fiance and I have noticed that our service has been getting really bad. We have verizon and usually have great service anywhere we go and where we live we have usually full service but lately its been going to no service and then back to kinda full and then full.
EWhat I was wondering is is it a rom thing or could it be that the baseband version we have is sprint so maybe that is causing the bad service or just verizon taking time switching over the towers to 4g.
We really love this rom and dont want to switch if we dont have to. What can we do to go back to the way our service was before? Thank you for any help

Have you noticed any difference in 3G speeds, call quality, or sending texts? It could be that the phone is doing it. Which radio did you put on? You can flash xtrSense and put what changes on the phone you need to on there. Just make a NAND backup in Amon_RA and you can go back to the way you want.

The speed seems fine it just drops the calls and picks them right back up once it gets service again. The radio we have is the one that came with the froshedyo v10 rom 2.42.01.04.27
Is flashing xtr sense the only way to fix it or can I fix it on the rom we have? Also would flashing a verizon radio make a difference. Thanks for the help so far.

The dropped call issue is a 2.2 issue. It's not the rom or the radio. It's a known issue with all 2.2 Eris roms. Unfortunately no fix has been found for it yet.
Right I knew the dropped call issue is a froyo thing but the phone also goes in and out of service while just sitting there not even doing anything to the phone and it never did that with our stock 2.1. Maybe it is just verizon. I dunno.

I just wanted to make sure you know that rooted ROMs usually don't include radios, and FroShedYo definitely doesn't. The reason is that screwing up a flash of a radio be pretty dangerous, so the rooted ROMs leave the radio alone.
Traditionally, once using a rooted ROM, the only way to get a new radio version is by manually flashing just the radio.

Which Radio?

I am currently running the Evil Fascinate 3.6 Rom. With the official ED04 radio. Really havent had many missed calls issues but seem to not get the best signal and seem to lose gps location sometimes. Anyone recommend a better radio i should flash through ODIN to help for that and maybe anything else?
That's my golden question too... I have tried every modem from ec01 to ed04 (and all versions in between) and now ec09. I seem to miss about 1 or 2 calls a week on all of them with the same data and gps performance. So, for my phone, there doesn't appear to be any noticeable differences. But when you look around you will notice some people getting differing results.
I suggest giving each modem a test drive to see how your phone reacts. Good luck

[Q] Just Flashed Rom, Kernel, Radio - now have very low signal - need help please

I just flashed everything on Liquids page for the Thunderbolt Gingerbread 3.0 because after reading lots of comments, people seemed to think it was a good build.
I flashed the rom, then Imoseyon lean kernel, then the MR2 radio linked there.
After doing this I went from full bars and 4g to one bar and really slow 3g.
Using the app Phone Info to try and turn on my 4g radio didn't work because there is no listing for a 4g radio. In fact I now have options for GSM radios and one unknown listing.
Can anyone help me get my full signal strength and 4g back please?
I searched a ton for a couple hours now and couldn't find anything posted that would help me.
baseband version 1.48.00.0906w_1, 0.01.78.0906w_2
The radio is the newest radio just release by VZ. Sounds like you are running an AOSP rom if you are having the option as i had this happen to me once. Try setting it to the unknown setting. Maybe that rom won't work out well for you. Or you could try a sense based and possibly have better results. I would personally start off with flashing an alternate gingerbread radio, then maybe try a different rom. Also might want to have a rom booting up before you try a kernel, that too could be a problem. You did a lot at once so it's kinda hard to pin point the problem.
Ok, I will try another radio from the big list that is stickied.
Setting my phone to unknown just makes my phone lose all signal reception; the bars disappear.
None of the linked radios are working I guess I will try Cyanogenmod...
If you can get cm working using a gingerbread radio and default kernel, i would keep that radio and try liquids rom again not updating the kernel at first. Then if you get satisfactory speeds, etc, backup that, then mess with the kernel. Do it step by step until it works, or you find the problem. One thought, did you have the radio set to cdma only on the last sense rom you tried, or did you have it set to cdma+lte. Along time ago i forgot to reset it from cdma only and couldn't connect to lte on a AOSP till i changed it back.
Hrm, I don't remember exactly what the setting was on my stock Sense ROM. I did like to turn off 4g though to save battery.
I just tried Cyanogen and while it loaded fine, and replaced the kernel, it gave me the same radio problems. I flashed to the radio recommended on the CM7 page.
So should I flash a stock sense rom, enable 4g, then try Cyanogen or Liquids?
I just flashed [ROM][6/30/2011]2.01.605.0- Basic Debloat v2.1.1 and didn't change the radios from the newest GB listing and I regained my 4g and signal strength.
I wonder what is up with my phone and CM7 and Liquid both not able to use 4g?
At least I feel calmer now. I was kinda freaking out there for a little bit...
Did you try CM7 with the stock kernel? Or did you replace it right away? Maybe try a different IMO kernal, a slightly older AOSP to see if it works.
Well, CM7 listed a different kernel than what I had previously installed, so i left it alone.
When I flash to a Sense ROM, everything works fine. AOSP ROMS are giving me trouble when I switch from an "unknown" LTE radio to CDMA in phone info. I immediately lose signal and the radio pretty much is fubar'd.
If i set my phone to 4g in a Sense ROM, then goto CM7 or LGB, it works fine until I try to change the radio. I guess i just need to leave the radio alone in AOSP's.
I am trying out some different ROMS to find the best one that works for me....
I REALLY like LGB though, even with the finicky radio. Perhaps leaving the 4g radio on will be ok for battery life.... I would just really like to get the better part of a day out of it with moderate usage.
Thanks for the replies man, I appreciate it.

[Q] Mixing kernels and modems?

I am no Noob to Android, but am to Samsung phones. This is my first time ever encountering kernels and modems that could be flashed separately. All other Android devices I used had everything together as a single package and did not offer a kernel and modem separately.
That said, I am trying to determine a solution for a frustration of mine. I want the newest Gingerbread 2.3.6 version for my ATT Galaxy S2 (NOT Skyrocket), but every time I check for updates, my phone says that I am up to date already. Yet, there have been three newer firmware versions leaked and I dont know what this means, but I am wondering if ATT is leaving me in the dust or something.
I have tried all three of the leaked updates (UCKJ1, J2, and J4), and although the phone works perfectly fine, all versions give me an impossible to deal with problem when I am in a call with someone. The problem is that no matter who I am talking to, they all complain that they cannot hear me because my voice is randomly fading in and out to the point where they cannot hear me at all. Strangely though, when I am on UCKH7, everyone says that I come in nice and clear and no one ever complains about clarity.
So, I was wondering first, what controls the calling portion of the firmware/
ROM? I was thinking that it was the modem, but when I think of modems, I think of something controlling internet, like 3/4G and wifi.
Second, if it IS the modem that controls the calling, then what would happen if I flashed the UCKJ4 firmware and the UCKH7 modem? Will everything work?
I was thinking that since H7 seems to be the only version that doesnt give me voice problems, then by using its modem with the J4 kernel, I could have the newest firmware, but still have people hear me.
If anyone knowledgeable in this area could help me, that would be ridiculously awesome! I dont want to try this unless I am sure that I wont brick my phone or something.
BTW, the voice problem is not caused by finger over microphone or my or the other party's reception. I have tested this as thoroughly as possible and it is definitely the firmwares for some reason.
1) your modem controls both the calls and data connection.
2) you can flash the stock KH7 modem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336958&highlight=UCKH7+modem
you can do this without changing your rom or kernel. Hope that fixes your call issues (sounds like it will).
Modem controls calls and data connection, however the Samsung Noise Reduction feature is in the audio libraries within /system and to some degree in the kernel (sound drivers)
Ok, so the modem does handle calls then. Thats good to know!
For the record though, the noise suppression feature seems to have no affect on this problem of mine. It doesn't matter whether it is on or not :-\
I am CURRENTLY running KH7 modem AND kernel and no problems right now.
Soooooo... What would happen if I flashed the J4 kernel, but the KH7 modem though?
Will things work right (data, wifi, phone calls, system stability, etc)? Will I lose noise suppression?
LOL, thanks for the replies so far, but my questions were only half-answered. (Probably too much text in my OP... sorry!)

Most likely not much - the only case where you're likely to notice a change is if you flash my kernel, which pulled in the I9100's latest sound driver a few days ago.
Please forgive me for not fully understanding all of this.... -_-'
So, it isn't worth it to flash the J4 kernel (in order to get Gingerbread 2.3.6) and the H7 modem (to keep my phone calls clear)?
If I flashed your kernel though, how would it affect my phone?
Will I be at 2.3.6?
Would I flash your kernel, but keep the H7 modem?
Also, can you provide a link to your kernel (to make sure I find the same thing you are talking about)?
Again, forgive me for not understanding right away.

[Q] Using CM9 from Codeworx; should I upgrade baseband? Also, what is baseband?

Yeah, I'm not what you could call a "developer", or a "smart" person, but I do like the CM9 builds, and have been using them for about a month. I'm on the XXKI4 baseband (or firmware, which it's called under system info on the phone) and I wonder if there's any need to update this at all. I'm not currently experiencing any major bugs/crashes, although I do miss the audio-out on the Samsung dock, but that's probably not going to be fixed until the big Sam releases 4.0 anyway, right?
It's the modem, the modem handles your signal, cellular data and such.
You can upgrade to a newer version if you like it may improve your signal connection and/or data speeds or it can even decrease it.
KI4 is generally good I use that as I get good signal from it.
Try it they are easy to flash and can change back easily.

Baseband, firmware, modem... ARE WE NOT ALL PEOPLE?
Yeah, I'm gonna stick with this one for now, then. Thanks for explaining!
