Hi guys
Here in Australia we have a network provider called Telstra that now uses 4G. I am due for an upgrade from my trusty HTC Desire.
I have decided that from all the phones out there it comes down to two phones, so I have come here today to ask what your opinions are on these models and which one you would recommend and why.
The phones are:
Samsung Google Nexus (Not 4G model)
HTC Velocity 4G
Don't get Nexus S as a upgrade, being stuck with it for 2 years is a bad idea, not sure on the other phone though

This is the Samsung Nexus and it only just came out?

You mean the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and he's talking about the Samsung Nexus S.
---------- Post added at 11:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:37 PM ----------
I'd go for the Galaxy Nexus over the Velocity 4G. The Velocity won't see Ice Cream Sandwich for a while, and when the next OS upgrade (Jellybean?) is released then the Nexus will get it first, way before the Velocity (if the Velocity gets it at all...)
Also the Velocity will kill it's battery very quick due to the 4G radio. If battery life is important to you then definitely get the Nexus.
It depends on your need. If you are a serious Android app developer, I would recommend you to get a Nexus family phone. It get less frustration to develop on an unmodified Android OS, than vendor modified Android OS.
Talking about battery performance and Display
galaxy nexus would give u batter battery backup and better display than Velocity 4G.
and talking about speed and internet Velocity 4G is far way better.
it has 1.5ghz dual core where nexus has 1.2ghz dual core cpu
check it yourself about speed and other stuff.
phone interface speed and looks are important, I do prefer pure android, I might have to test the difference in both phones speed within the UI.
I dont know the Velocity but i would go for the Galaxy Nexus cause it has a brilliant Display and good hardware

Hello. I will soon be leaving sprint for verizon and was wondering if I should get the galaxy nexus or the galaxy s 3. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!
Of course go for the s3 the galaxy nexus is nowhere near the s3 in hardware specs and camera and the galaxy nexus only excels in software and in support it uses vanilla android and it already has jellybean but u are a member at xda and u can always search for guides to flash stock vanilla android on s3 i say go for s3

Which would be better for frequently flashing roms and which would head further in development of roms? I understand the galaxy s 3 has a locked bootloader, but will that stop people from developing? Also, when the galaxy s 4 comes out, will EVERYONE stop on the s 3 and go straight for the s 4? I feel like the nexus would keep going. One more thing, what's vanilla android?

How long before you leave? I would try to wait until the next nexus comes out (this is when I plan on getting a new phone).
Google realeases android and every company like htc samsung motorola and sony put their own skins on then like htc has htc sense , samsung has touchwiz , sony has timescape ! The stock vanilla android doesnt have any skin its the original android and the original android is always faster . As for developing and roms i would say go for the galaxy nexus cz its google's flagship device and will always be supported , the galaxy s3 will be supported too and it has more processing power the quad core exynos is the fastest cpu on android phones and the overclocked edition of mali 400 is so fast , but if u are interested in support and roms go for nexus ! What the heck they even ported CM10 jellybean to the outdated nexus one Hit the thanks button if i helped and let me know ur choice

I'm probably eaving within a few months. If the next nexus is out when I switch, I will get that. If it isn't, then I will most likely get the galaxy nexus. Thanks!:good:
Saw this on Reddit. Not for our phones but this gives hope than an official Jellybean is being worked on

I'm reading in that thread that the system portion is corrupt, so it doesn't seem like it's going to be usable for anything.
Dang how did we go from Sense 4.1 to 4.5 so quickly? lol
Is it android 4.1 or 4.0.4? strictly a sense update?
Jellybean is 4.1.1

HTC tends to update Sense when it updates the Android version.
For example, I'm quite sure that the Evo Shift went from Sense 1 to Sense 2.1 when it got updated to Gingerbread, and the Evo 3D got updated from Sense 3.0 to Sense 3.6 when it updated to ICS.
It'll probably be much the same as Sense 4.0/4.1 but it'll have more JB features.
Since this is a jb thread I think sprint is doing a better job w updates. Reason I'm lead to believe this is I just got the update for jb on my gn meanwhile the vzw doesn't have anything official. So as long as sprint does a good job with approving it i think we will see jb by November as long as htc doesn't drag ass. It took 29 days from the one x getting updated to 4.0.4 to us getting it which is a rather quick turn around Imo.

You guys can probably port it. If the nexus s and galaxy s devices can port ics sense 4 from the tegra3 one x, you guys should be able to. Just plop the proprietary files in and change the build.prop and cm10 kernel and you should be set

I wonder if that ruu was actually meant for the One x+ and that's why no one could get it to work.

I'm sorry, but Filet Mignon with Sense is still Sense.
im ready!! for some jelly bean babyyy!!!
This ARTICLE has a nice little tidbit of information in it:
Sprint has finally started rolling out Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G. The update starts this evening and will be available to all handsets over the next few weeks.
For those new readers that don’t quite remember the Galaxy Nexus, the device features a 4.65-inch 720p display, a 5-megapixel camera, and Android 4.0 ICS. The Nexus S, on the other hand, is Google's 2010 Android flagship and also runs Android 4.0.
The upgrade, which is standard over-the-air, includes a great deal of improvements with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. These include enhancements to the keyboard, a buttery-smooth UI, and more advanced notifications. The update also includes Google Now, Google's answer to Siri.
Sprint also says that it plans to upgrade various other devices to Jelly Bean. including the HTC EVO 4G LTE and Samsung Galaxy S3. We should be hearing more about those updates soon.
Per usual, there will be manual update options available if you don't feel like waiting for the OTA, and you can find the download link and instructions on Know Your Cell as soon as it's posted.
If you're not one for manual updates, Sprint usually rolls these out in phases, so you shouldn't have to way too long. They usualy arrive within a few weeks.
Are you excited about Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on your Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G?

I don't care if HBoot 1.15 isn't cracked before it's released, I'll still take that update.
So I attempted to port a sense 4.5 ROM based on 4.0.4, not 4.1.1 and it's stuck at the bootanimation and I cant get logcat going to fix anything
Really want to see the changes from 4.1 to 4.5.
For those wondering about the jump from 4.1 to 4.5 this is standard programming practice. This shows there were 4 minor revisions between the two. Those can be anything from adding or removing base apps to fixes or features added in. It is up to the developer to make decisions of what makes for a major upgrade.

I agree. I am not concerned with minor changes to Sense. In some cases you won't want to update anyway because of compatibility with kernel or other reasons.
ive came to the conclusion that i will not leave android... i currently have a galaxy nexus which is a gorgeous phone and i love it, i love the pure android experience and there's so many roms!!!!, and i love android 4.2.1 (now playing around with 4.2.2)
But my upgrade is now and i dont know what phone to get
Nexus 4? (not so different to the galaxy nexus in looks from the front)
wait for the S4 (im really impatient)
Sony Xperia Z?
HTC One X?
My question is which in your opinions is the best? and more customizable when it comes to roms?
and feels and looks great of course
Would really apreciate your help
I use my phone alot, and am always testing out new roms!
I think the S4 will be released next month or April at latest. I'd either get the N4 or the S4.

I'm pretty sure Sense 5 will come to our HOX+ but the question is if it's worth updating ?
I currently am not impressed with its blinkfeed which is apparently the main deal with sense 5 I mean we already have apps for that such as pulse and flipboard that gathers all your news on your interested topics and works brilliantly, plus that clock and weather widget is the ugliest i've ever seen...
guy's please tell me im not alone here in thinking that sense 4/4+ looks much better??
and so the main question of this thread is "if we get a sense 5 update since technically its only running on jellybean 4.1 and not 4.2 it means its just a UI update, will you update? and if yes or no why??

Your not alone. I also think 4+ looks better. Hopefully by then there will be many AOSP ROMs for the ATT variant and I won't have to worry about upgrading a sense ROM. But if I had to choose I wouldn't take my time to update it unless it was a major update (like 4.2. X)

As far as I know, there should be PARTIAL sense 5 port for the devices released before hTC One. Let's see...
Agreed, I don't like the static flat colourles icons and ill bet that blink feed will chew some battery, looks like a social only version of Google now and disabling that saves a nice bit of battery.
launcher looks a bit dull from vids I've seen.
Be interesting to see what they do with the camera app and driver quality for hox+.
Edit: just saw swipe to the left to go back to normal home screens, luckily.

No more then any other similar system app that's running eg Google now, any latest release game would be far more memory and system intensive then that.
As they have said sense 5 it a much leaner version of sense don't forget

i acctually had a play with a htc one in my local 3 uk store today.
i acctually did not like the look of the phone at all and sense 5 is to me anyway horrible.
and with an upfront cost of £69 imho its a rip of.
i have the one x plus and i see no reason to get the htc one.
its as with all phone manufactures its a sales gimmick there is allways something better than what u have
but is it really better i for one are not convinced the htc one is better than my htc one x plus.
maybe it is better but i dont care as the hox plus does it all and more from a handset.
