So I was at a concert the other night where photography was not allowed, and of course I wanted to take pictures, but didn't both out of respect and not wanting to get my phone taken away. But I was still curious if I could figure out a way to take photos with the screen off for situations like this. I was able to set up a Tasker profile that allowed me to do it, sort of. I keyed the long-press search button to take a photo, and it works with the screen off, but for some reason Tasker's camera function only takes a very, very low-res photo, and I can't seem to find a way to change that. So does anyone else have any clever solutions? Obviously it'd be a problem if it prevents the device from sleeping.
You can use a app called screen filter it can darken your screen and make letters visible.

Great suggestion, thanks! That's certainly a start.
what if you got two pieces of polarized plastic and cut them opposite so the light from the screen is blocked completely. Then use this app: to take a picture with the volume button.. So just open up the app, cover the screen. Then when you need to take a picture just press the power button, slide to unlock, then take the snap.

you can shoot pics with either the vol or the search buttons if you use Vignette instead of the stock camera app.
Vignette is better than the stock app in every possible way after you figure out all its many options.
Have you tried "Spy Phone" in the market? There is a free version too. You can set a custom picture or just a black screen and tap anywhere on the screen to take pictures/videos. It also mutes all the sounds so you dont have the shutter sound. There used to be an app called Simple Notepad, i think, but was similar to this(Blank screen, tap to shoot), but i cant seem to find it. I believe there are a few on the market that i have not tried out too, just search for "spy cam" or "candid", or something on those lines.

Here is the simple notepad. I guess the name has changed.

Lol that simple notepad app is awesome.....

Little Photo
You can try using little photo from the market which lets you take a picture just by tapping on the screen or using the volume buttons. theres also a camera mod in the forums that lets you use the search button to take a picture
heh, I'm with the OP, I not a shutter bug so hadn't used the camera much, but I found exactly the same thing. I kept trying to hit the shutter button and it kept sliding out the options menu...
I use vignette and can't recommend it highly enough! I use it as my sole camera and it works awesome. Shoots faster than stock and you can use volume keys or tap anywhere to take a pic. Also allows for 10x zoom which is actually handy and works decently.

Curious as to who is usijng the default Camera app on the Note, and who is using other apps from the Market (like Camera 360 or Vignette, etc).
Pictures on my note come out well, but so sloow writing & I never seem to know if it snapped a picture or not.
Ideally, I'd like an app where you click click & hold on the screen (it focuses) and when you let go it takes the picture. Very useful with kids so you can let go when they are looking the right way!
Any suggestions?
The stock camera app does the hold/release thing that you want. The picture snaps immediately when you release, the lag you see is just the picture saving. It is a pretty instantaneous picture though.

Volume Button
Are there any apps that utilize the Volume button as a Snap button, I'm using the Camera ICS+ app that can do it, but the quality doesnt seem as good as the stock app. Any suggestions?
Hey guys
First time poster, long time reader.
Basically I was wondering if anyone else thought SOME the motion options for the SIII were abit, shall we say, crap?
The double tap for the top of a list doesnt work on anything but stock apps??
The swipe to screenshot is very cool, but often I swipe to a different page before the shot has taken.
Also the waving infront of the screen to silence music is questionable.
The only ones that are decent IMO are the one where where your on a contact and put it to your ear and it calls, thats cool, and the turning the phone over to silence.
Anyone else notice this? Any tips on getting them to work better?
Yeah some seem to be a huge flop, I like the screenshot one and the camera unlock, You could always try recalibrating your G-sensor to make it more accurate. The way I look at it is most of it's really a novelty and is more annoying than good.
Whats the camera unlock one?
Ill give the sensor recalibrate a go, see if it helps
The unlock into camera is rather useful, it works by clicking your power button once on your phone to show you your lock-screen. then you put one finger on the screen and turn the phone from portrait to landscape and the phone unlocks into the camera application. this has its limitations still, for instances you can't make it unlock into a third party camera application and if you have a motion, face, PIN or no lock it will not work.
I am getting really frustrated with the auto-focus "feature" on this phone. Is there any way to disable it so I can actually focus on what I want to take a picture of? Some sort of macro mode would be super helpful. Is there a setting somewhere that I missed?
Do you have the options on the screen when you take a photo? Otherwise, just tap on your target to take the picture with them/it in focus. Otherwise, use the Magic Focus feature to adjust focus after the picture is taken.
Aside from that, to do manual focus, you'll have to use another app, like Focal or any other camera app.

Put the camera in the mode where the shutter is on the side. Then you just tap on whatever you want to focus on in the screen, it focuses than you hit the shutter button.

Oh yeah! Derp!
Idk. But u must try focal app for more difficult shots. It gives tons of exposure zoom and filter options.
Okay, I finally got it. Thanks very much. At first I was never leaving it in "option" mode, I would always go back out of it before taking pictures. I totally missed this until you mentioned it.
To clarify in case anyone else is unclear:
-click the "3 dots" button at the top of the camera screen to open up the options mode.
-In addition to the various mode, settings, etc. buttons at the top, there will also be a shutter button at the bottom.
-In this mode, the shutter button will take the picture, and touching anywhere else will create a focal point.
I went all through the pdf manual and didn't see anything at all about this.
Too dark if i have even a bit light in front of camera
Still cant find a good option to make a photo when i have even a bit light towards me. It shows totally dark at the shadow part. Exposure doesnt go as i want. Does it have also a Manual Focus?

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but if you tap the three-dot so that the options come up, wherever you tap on the screen I believe is where it'll focus on, then use the camera button at the bottom to take the picture.

I know what u mean but still doesnt make a big difference about focusing when i want. And i meant...exposure. If there is a tree in nature and is sunny weather and under the tree is dark coz of shadow...and i want to focus exposure in that dark part...coz there is a flower or a rabbit...this exposure doesnt work. I dont mind if the tree becomes overexposured. I hope u understand me. Thank u for replying.

If the manually choosing where to focus in the stock camera app isn't doing the job, I'd try a third-party camera app. It sucks it won't use the laser focus but there's a chance a more professional app would do the job. At least if you buy a good app you can test it right away and refund it quickly (limit was 15 minutes but it might've increased again - I can't keep track). Good luck! I'm sure we'll all appreciate your findings if you experiment. You're welcome!

I tried some 3rd part apps but still not satisfied. Too many unnecessary options and fake sometime. Anyway...thank u a lot. Hugs and enjoy ur time.
Question, when I'm in the camera and I switch to the front mode, two faces (one with starts, one without) with a vertical bar between them pops up on the right. It doesn't appear to do anything on screen and I was wondering what sliding that bar is supposed to do?
Thanks
That's "beauty mode" which essentially smooths textures within your pictures, hiding skin imperfections. The effect doesn't show on screen prior to taking the picture. If you take a picture with it at 0 and another all the way up, you should be able to see how it works.
