Is it only sd card cm7 thats bricking the nt - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Have there been any troubles with the internal install of cm7 or is it just the SD card install.

That's the main issue that could "brick" it. Since it is the first release, there may be more issues. I've seen some crashes using Flixster, some hanging after sleep, and a need to reboot because wifi quits working.
It's usable but will definitely get better. Use caution with sdcards on this first release.

I believe it's actually the internal version that issue problem, not the SD card version.

It is actually BOTH versions. It doesn't matter if you are running off Internal or SD
..... DO NOT FORMAT YOUR SD CARD......
The issue seems to be that ANY type of format command issued from within the BETA CM7 actually formats the internal partitions thus rendering the device unable to boot.
There has been a fix posted but you don't want to go down that road unless absolutely necessary.

Thank you for the warning

thanks for the replies. I went back to the rooted stock for now even though I haven't had any problems with this rom. I just didn't want to brick my nt. At least we know that we can have custom roms now.

[Q] Safe to format internal SD?

Heya,
Just making sure that its safe to do? I was planning on formatting the INTERNAL SD using android itself (un-mounting then formatting) then SBF flashing and starting fresh..
Just thought I'd ask someone smart before doing things just to make sure I'm not making an idiotic mistake.
Thanks,
- DarkRyoushii
I don't recall on which of the Atrix forums but it seems like the title of the thread was something to do with touch screen problems. If I recall correctly, the touch screen will not work correctly if the internal sd card is formatted. And I don't think a fix has been figured out.
Well it must have been with cwm recovery because I formatted with android and it worked out fine. Thanks for the warning though
Sent from my MB860 in Australia
Hey Dark just wondering if you had to sbf flash after formatting the internal memory, or does the phone work without any issues after formatting??
Hey I would assume it worked without issues however I formatted the internal storage while in android, remounted it without issues and had it working without issues but then turned the phone off and SBF flashed back to stock (as I was planning too originally and wanted to format the SD card to remove the app data before SBF flashing)
I assume it would have kept working without issues but would have deleted my app data such as save games, pictures, music and login info for apps like xda
Thanks. Ya no problems.
The touch screen problem was due to partitioning the internal sd... and unfortunately no one knows how to fix it. Im still screwed.

[Q] how to replace nook 1.4.2 with cm7

I just purchased a nook 16gb tablet and want to replace the nook software with cm7. I have been reading and there are so many different methods I'm not sure what to do. Can someone point me in the right direction? It has 1.4.2 on it and I want to completely replace it with cm7. No need for the nook software.
1.) Make bootable CWM recovery SD card, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446987
2.) Download CM7 internal version, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
3.) Download latest gApps, found here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
4.) Place the CM7 zip and the gApps zip on My NOOK internal memory (mnt/media partition).
5.) Boot into your CWM SD card (plugging into the charger may be necessary to get it to boot from SD).
6.) Wipe dalvik cache
Factory reset
Install the CM7 ROM from internal SD card
Install gApps from internal SD card
Reboot
7.) Enjoy!
Thanks for the detailed answer. Will this give me access to more than 1gb of space or do I need to repartition the memory as well?

You will still need to partition. If you live near a bn store you could have them do it for you since you haven't changed anything yet, but it isn't that difficult to do yourself.

Note: having B&N do it will give you less space to use than if you do it yourself.
I used the repart.img from the bn 1.42 factory recovery to get 8 gb. Is there an easy way to get more space?
Here is the way to choose how much storage you want divided between partitions. Just folllow the directions and you should be okay.

Yes, you should be able to get the partitions back to factory stock if necessary. However, many people have used this method without trouble, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I know it seems daunting but if you follow the steps exactly and execute the commands as shown, you'll be just fine.
Well so far I have cm7 installed with 8 gb of usable space and haven't had any problems. Thanks for the info and reassurance. I will try to repartition it again after work.
I notice everyone seems to be running cm9. This tablet is mainly going to be used by my daughter to read books, play games, and watch side loaded video. Is the current build sufficient for that or should I wait for a later one?

If I were you, I'd stick with CM7 for now, at least until the devs publish a release candidate with the 3.0x kernel.
For what your daughter is planning to do, CM7 will fit the bill nicely; the only thing to be aware of is WiFi hangups -- you need to show her how to turn the WiFi off before turning the screen off, or show her how to reboot the tablet.

Everyone is definitely not running cm9, as of a few weeks ago, according to my poll here.
With that said, unless your daughter plans on using Netflix/higher end games, I'd check out CM9. The CM9 .04 version is extremely stable aside from hardware acceleration.
I was referring to the people responding to my questions based on their signatures. I will have to check it out. She won't be playing any high end games.
I installed cm9 and gapps then repartitioned the internal memory. Everything seemed to go fine but I can't see the internal memory from my pc. Unless I have an sd card mounted it doesn't even give me the option to turn on usb storage. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
For rock solid stability, since it would be used by your daughter, stick to stock firmware, root and install gapps via memory card the img file and apps are posted in relevant thread in development section for rooting 1.4.2. than install a launcher of your choice i prefer holo launcher as it gives the ics feel. All other builds cm7 and cm9 are battery suckers.
All roms dont support micro sd and internal memory together Stick to stock firmware. Try disabling adb debugging mode to enable usb file transfer.
I guess if i would open my eyes I would have noticed it is listed as a known cm9 problem. I really like the look of cm9 but think I'm gonna have to wait till they get a few more things working. I never really considered stock with another launcher. I may play around with that a bit and see what I like. Thanks for the suggestion.

[Q] What to do if I lost access to my internal storage as well as sd card

Hi, new guy with english problems here, be gentle
So basically I lost access to any kind of storage on my SGS2 running CM10.1. Here's what happened. I was using internal and sd for a long time, then, as I needed my SDHC elsewhere i removed it. Nothing was lost as all data was stored internally. BUT. After formatting SD in FAT32 and putting it back everything crashed. Apps are refusing to work, demanding an SD card. Files Manager says that folder was lost. All of them. First thing I wanted to do was to flash CM once again, a newer NB but my PC does not read internal storage either, and putting it in sd doesn't do me any good as cwm doesn't see it also. CM can access internal, so i flashed the same version of CM once again - the only one i got there. Nothing changed. I'm a bit lost and seek any advice
U checked if u really format it with Fat32?

Sure. Also I formatted it with SDFormatter, thanks to this CWM can mount it and format by itself, but OS does not respond anyway

[Q] PLEASE HELP I GIVE UP and throw myself at the mercy of this community

i have read several threads. Installe Ubuntu on a laptop and have come to the conclusion.........I have no business rooting, or anything i hav tried several metods to try and restore my 16gb nt and have been unsuccesful. is there any body out there willing to try and restore it for me. i will pay all shipping and will send it with my 8gb class 10 card. I just want it restored to cm7 or something functional HELL even stock would be great at this point. I do not have the skills to do it myself. It has been bricked for over a month now. This was a device used by all of my family members and now they are all upset with me for ruining it. Will B&N take it back and do a restore? anything ANYTHING PLEASE HELP!
Can't you just start by telling us what you have tried?
Have you for example tried the repart.img card already? If so, what happened?
Edit: I checked you previous posts and see that you tried to get Adam's method going.
Before going through the trouble of sending the Tablet around, try the repart.img
http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/
In short
1. Download, extract zip and save the repart.img in the same folder as you keep your Winimage
2. Open Winimage from within that folder. (Do not "install" and run, just open from the folder!)
3. Choose the "repart.img"
4. Burn it to the card
5. Boot to the card (inserted in Tablet)and wait for green checkmark
6. Turn off, remove card and Tablet will reboot automatically.
If green checkmark doesn't appear after a few minutes and a red cross appears instead, then you're in trouble and nee to try soimething else. But let's hope it deosn't come to that!
o.k.
Thank You! i have followed these instructions. i even started out with a new 8GB SanDisk microSD and a new usb card reader. i was able to successfully create the card. My 16GB NT does boot to the restore screen but I do have the red x in the corner the whole time. When it finishes, i get a the device will shut down in 5 sec. I have tried the re-boot without the card as well as booting with the power button and the cable. i am waiting for a fresh download of adam's file to try that agin. If that does not work I will move onto celtic's instructions.
FINALLY!
Alright! I have returned to stock. courtesy of the AdamOutlerUbuntuTotalReFlash. The problem is the touch screen doesn't work. I will be attempting to restore to a previous cm back up from here. I owe more than thanks to so many people here. asawi, AdamOutler, Albert Wertz, Celtic, indirect. and all who helped. them. I have learned a bit in a minute and have a long way to go. My 16 GB NT isn't fully restored but, it's closer today than 4 -5 weeks ago!
Woohoo!! And I see you already know how to fix the touch. I'm sure you'll do fine, and I hope you come back and let us know about your success!!
not quite
i am pretty happy with my success so far. and it is all due to this forum. I haven't figured out how to fix the touch yet. I have tried to flash a few different things but no success yet.
Have you tried just running CM10 from sd card? I don't know if you can do that and restore original touch firmware, but it's worth a try!
The Touchscreen app is included, so it "should" work...
Here's a link to and easy-peasy versio:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
Download (first download under "Download", ending with SDC-IMG.RAR), extract and put img-file in your Winimage folder, burn to card, pop into Tablet and boot into sd card.
Open the Touch firmware app and go back to original.
Remove card and rebbot into stock and hopefully all is well now!
Since you don't actually plan to run the Tablet that way you don't have to expand the user partition on the card, just run it as it is!
Edit: FWIW, I went and tried to flash touch formware while running CM10 from sd-card, and it seems to work fine. I then took the card out a and rebooted to my "regular" (internal) CM10 and reflashed the touch firmware back to what it was.
(I have no need for 10 touch right now, so I keep it in original until I do),
So you really should be good to go with Succulent's (Iamafanof) ready-made CM10 (or CM10.1) card images!

I think what I am going to try is re-create and boot from the the AdamOutlerCard and see if that clears up the problem. The nook doesn't seem to recognize the sd card or the format? and will not boot to or from the sd card (CWM) . and then I will move on to Succulent's http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...r-nook-tablet/ . I really appreciate the advice and all the help.

At what stage of the recovery did you get this error message, e.g., during the process of initial sign-in to B&N?
o.k. I have achieved boot to SD card using sucullent's iamafanof cm10 image as instructed by asawi. my next goal will be researching and flashing the internals again. i suspect my initial problem resulted from having both cwm and cyanoboot resulting in the two arguing for permissions and rights. Additionally flashing the 10 touch which led to an unresponsive screen, which led me too trying to clear the "wrong" boot or mount and leaving me with only the cwm boot. patience!, clear thinking and help from all of you here got this device back in working order. Again I am extremely grateful for all the help!

Yes! Touch is working. I have not completed the registration for B&N yet. It seems that the updates that they push make it more challenging to root and / or flash to internal. I am just running CM off of an 8GB Class 10 micro SD. I don't want to do the B&N registration yet because I haven't 100% decided to flash to internal. Can the updates still be pushed even thogh I haven't registered? I am considering to keep running of an SD and get a 32GB class 6 card to do that. I would like to have the internal flashed because well let's face it the NT really isn't much to talk about until you. Unlock it's true potential. Question this process which I have followed here the repart and return to stock but running CM off the SD is that considered root?
I'm currently running CM 10.1 from an SD card and it does the same thing as internal boot. All information stored on the SD card with root privileges.
Sv: [Q] PLEASE HELP I GIVE UP and throw myself at the mercy of this community
I can't see any reason not to register your device if possible. You can block updates even if you're running stock as long as you're rooted.
It's more convenient running from internal than from SD, but I can't say I noticed much improvement in performance. Stick to class 4 unless you already have the class 6 lying around.
Be prepared that there might be problems registering after running the Ubuntu restore due to serial number possibly having been wiped.
O.K.

Alrighty then. I guess I will stick with just running off the SD card then. If I can't register then I will probably flash to internal. just curious why stick with class 4? Does the class 4 just run better or more compatible with the NT? How can I can confirm root?
SanDisk class 4 is the SD card most often recomended för NT. Runs fast and well and even devices that are fussy boot easily from it. The way data needs to be read for this kind of use isn't any faster on a higher class.

Is it possible or realistic that I can run a different SD card for different people using the tablet? i.e. using an 8 gig card with games and such for my kids to use. another card for my wife and then a card for myself. My fear is that the kids will eject the card or just not really know what they're doing and do something accidentally? (They are kids after all). My wife doesn't like the fact that I keep changing the configurations. Just overall giving everybody the ability to have the apps and configuration they want without encroaching on somebody else's preferences and hogging up all the space available on the card.

Yes that is possible. Just write the SDC version from iamafanof's page onto separate SD card. Recommended to use at least an 8GB Speed 4 microSD.
The other option is to use the profiles/users feature. It might be only CM10.1 builds that have the User capability. You can set up different accounts for yourself, your kids and your wife.

[Q] Cannot Mount Internal or External SD Card in 4ext

Hi Guys,
Before I tear my hair out going through all efforts to recover my phone back to a working condition, I'd like to know the odds of this being a hardware malfunction. I was running ARHD 4.0 and it has all but bricked my phone (beware, stick with NRG's rom if you want a stable Sense daily driver). After going through tons of force-closes and permissions issues, the phone became incapable of reading the external SD. Now I don't know if this is due to corruption or an actual hardware issue (I "dropped" the phone once while it was acting up, though I was still able to access my ext-sd after that IIRC). Hopefully someone can give me some guidance here, I'm a little wary of the fact that my phone cannot see the external SD card even from 4ext at this point in time.
I've completely wiped the phone as much as I can via 4ext, I suppose the next step would be to insert a different SD card or see if I can't get another device to read this one so that I can format it to fat-32 and start fresh, but as it stands I cannot currently get 4ext to see my external sd (or internal for that matter). Also, when first entering the bootloader, I don't see the scrolling lines of "ph85img.xxx not found" which to me would be indicative that seeing seeing my external SD card either, and thus not seeking for a recovery image.
Assuming that I am unable to get the phone to mount a working Fat-32 formatted external SD, would this necessarily indicate a hardware failure, or are there other potential culprits? Thanks for any help on this guys.
I had this problem too I fixed it by taking out the battery for about 5minutes exactly. This let's all sensors clear out and somewhat gives your phone a fresh start...tell me...does hboot (white screen that says unlocked s-on ect)...does it scan for the ph9857xx.IMG or zip? If it does than your phone still recognizes external storage sd card...if you can load a Rom to you ext sd card then you may be able to flash a new Rom from your ext sd card...use nrg Rom or super sense...hop I helped you..
