Album artwork quality... - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I'm annoyed with my Ace's stock players album art quality. Why SGSII have so beautiful artwork, when SGA have this blurry mess? I know it's more powerful phone, but then why PlayerPro or PowerAmp, even CloudSkipper can read embedded artwork with no problems? It's annoying... I don't like other media players on the market, I tried like 15 of them... Maybe someone knows how to mod Stock player? This seems so simple, yet so difficult for me...
P.S. I also did my digging and found out it could be done not only by modifying Music player, but OS itself... but I don't understand a word there. I know basic stuff about modding, like changing a icon, I understand Root, CWM, filesystem.. etc... but i'm no hacker... It's here by the way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755844
P.S.S. All my artwork is like >500x500

Not sure how you define the quality of the artworks, but the ones on my ace look (at least in my opinion ) quite good. I'm using CM right now, what is your ROM?
And is your artwork embedded or is it a file in the music folder? I think the music-app can use both of them. I once had the problem that no cover was shown, so i took a look and saw that the embedded cover was empty, and thus the app didn't show anything. Maybe your problem is somehow related to the one i had.
Also you could upload a screenshot, maybe it helps people arround here diagnose your problem.

I'm using stock 2.3.6 XWKT7 build. Just because CF-Root is so awesome.
My artwork is embedded (I use Mp3tag and to get artworks - AlbumArt Downloader, where I download my high res images) and I also tried to copy them to music folder.
Screenshot is in the attachment (in zip because forums convert any images to jpg with quality loss). Maybe not the best example, but you can see that the colors are bit washed out and it's not as sharp as it should be.. I envy iPhone users. On the right there is PowerAmp reading directly from embedded *.jpg file. On the right Zimly player which uses "albumthumbs" folder found on sd card. Sorry for not providing with stock music player, but right now I have some "technical difficulties" with that. I'll do that later, but the thing is, it's the same for all players who use this way of providing album artwork, they use albumthumbs folder.

It's not difficult at all and the problem isn't the mp3 itself.. it's problem of software for creating album thumbnails in low quality, even if the embedded image is high quality...

Sry, but I cant see any problems with quality.

Well, but I see... it's very noticeable for me... you can't even compare it to iPhone...

I think yu must be using chainfire....disable it and den try

Chainfire disabled makes no difference. Well I guess I'll have to stick to PowerAMP.. but still.. if somebody knows something, help is appreciated... But thanks nevertheless.

Try factory resseting and use stock rom

Nope, it's all the same on all Roms.

.m4a missing artist tag?

Is it me or does the SGS2 not show the artist tag in .m4a files? whats going on?
I installed PowerAmp, it's the only music app I could find that shows all of the tags and artwork for my iTunes music files (m4a's).
Mine still has missing tags? every other phone I've had has been fine? what have samsung done? and why??
the tag is still there when I load it back to iTunes, but something on the phone is stopping the tag being seen, very strange?
havent been using .m4a files yet but will try some out tonight when i get home from work. tried any other media player such as winamp? maybe a tag problem with PowerAMP?
I've used Doubletwist, Winamp, PowerAMP, and a tag editor to see what wrong, all do the same thing, can't figure it out, and the SGS2 guide it says plays .m4a's but its the only android phone I've seen this on?
You could always sync with Winamp and tell it to transcode .m4a into another format during sync, it's in the device properties when your phone is plugged in!
I could, but important now using spotify and synchronized my playlists, crazy but works.
I still don't understand why the sgs2 won't see the tags on m4a files? My nexus s and desire s do? Strange Samsung idea maybe?

I don't know, but I'm hoping it's easily fixed... I've just sold my iPod Touch so I can use the SGSII as my music player when I get it! Ripped some of my favourite CDs to .flac as well for the best music quality
Well if you find out, let me know, its bugging me, and seams to make a great phone, a bit second rate!

Just got my SGSII yesterday... my m4a tags are fine! Not sure what's happening with yours D:
EDIT: I was totally wrong, the artist didn't show up. Luckily I had like one album in m4a format, so I changed it to mp3 and everything's fine now! Just missing a few album arts here and there, but I think that's more a Winamp problem than a problem with the SGSII
Mine are the same .m4a artist tag shows as unknown. Play fine etc just doesn't show the artist
I've noticed that the Kies software from Samsung doesn't recognise any of the music tags for m4a files either even though it downloads codecs?
how have you guys transferred the music onto the s2?
I'm using Winamp to drag and drop, then play using Winamp on the phone and the same happens to me. 10GB of my 20GB collection is in m4a too.
Try using sync with Winamp and tell it that m4a isn't supported, and to transcode m4a into mp3 maybe? Might do the trick!
I found this after having copied files to the new phone, then searching under the artist and not finding the album I had copied. I searched for a keyword in the song name and sure enough - same symptoms. m4a files purchased form iTunes, plays the file fine, but not sorted properly.
Guess I'll give another music player app a shot.

All the other players I tried use the system media DB as the source, which is where the data problem lies.
I tried Winamp, poweramp, doubletwist and all have the same problem.
Looks like maybe we need a firmware update to fix this?
M4A tracks don't have an artist
I have the same issue here.
Any applications that use the system media library (which include DoubleTwist, Winamp, PowerAMP) don't display the artists.
I downloaded a tag editor app onto the phone, but when I go to edit the tags, they are all correct, it does seem to be an issue with the system, and not any apps.
Has anyone tried installing the default music player from vanilla Gingerbread?
Or is the media library part of the OS more than just that app?
Would imagine that the stock Android music player will have the same problem. It's pretty apparent that Samsung have customised the media scanner and broken it for no apparent reason, since it worked just fine before!
I'm not completely clear on how components such as the media scanner/media store database are packaged up but would hazard a guess that it might be possible to replace the Samsung version with the vanilla version...
In PowerAMP > Folders view, if I long press a m4a file then select Info I can clearly see that the artist info is there.
However, in Library view (which I wan't using at all until last week) the Artist section is definitely missing the m4a files.
The problem somehow seems to be all files that use AAC-codec (m4a, mp4, etc.). My .mp4-files wich worked perfectly on my old SGS are now broken (tags, that is).
It must be a system problem, cause other programs experience this also. And The music player seems to be pretty much the same as in SGS.
REALLY hope they fix this soon. I've been ripping my CD:s tp MP4:s for years. Not going to convert them all to mp3:s.

[Q] How to change settings of that built-in music player??

The built in music player that opens up in the center of the screen when you click a random music file.. I haven't the slightest idea what the name of that app is. It displays one of my personal images on the left side of the player. Does anyone know if this player has some sort of settings menu or if there is a way to change that image on the left? Thanks in advance. I appreciate it.
Hmm nobody knows this? lol
I'm pretty sure you're unable to change any settings via the "Music" that comes with the Rezound. It already has implemented the Beats Audio Equalizer that they think is best. If you want to adjust the settings to your own sound, you can always get winamp or poweramp.
Ok. Thanks man. What about that pic that it uses? It was using one of my random photos in my. Downloads folder. The photo never seems to change and really, id like to see something else besides that photo lol.. I know i can delete it.. But thats besides the point. Perhaps ill just look for another music app.

I ported a lot of music from my iTunes library to this phone, and used to have a lot of artist where I would just have one song, and so the album would be called Other. Noticed this phone hates that and that I had to go rename all those songs to a different album cause it would just start putting random pictures with random songs.

Music players misery....

anyone suggest a music player that works in a "flat file" fashion? i.e. gives an interface similar to a file manager that exposes at the folder level and lets me select any/all of my files without categorizing or "genius"-izing my stuff [which always fails in my case] ??
I've tried:
poweramp
winamp [been awhile - liked it on pcs, not on android]
TTPod [current - misses 70% of my files]
Mixzing
Cloudskipper [worthless]
a couple I can't recall
and the default
?
Music Folder Player Free
"Music Folder Player Free" by ZorillaSoft
"MortPlayer Music" by Mirko Schenk
wouldn't you know it... five minutes after posting I decided I'd try one of the ones I had not tried, and it works. Playerpro Trial has a folder feature and it just works. the album view genre view and others are predictably worthless, but at least it lets me find what I know is there, and all the files are shown intact, and to its credit it ignores empty folders. I'll take a look a Mort again - tried it before but can't recall the detail. and I'll definitely try folder player - sounds like someone gave 'em a tip.
Now I need a different thread - which one's the best of those that properly discover files? My second highest priority is the quality of the sound, and the one reason why I was quite fond of TTPod [while it was still free, of course] was its robust EQ. But on a P500/P509 such as i have, does it matter? the audio component is pretty lousy... Poweramp and Powerplay [the one I just installed] have DSP's they download for the 'unlocked' version. does it really help?
I am running backside on my OV. Since it's not the same phone I can't guarantee that you would see the same results, but just the dsp manager built into cm7 has made a very noticeable sound quality difference in my phone, so anything with a decent dsp should help. I'm still looking for a good free music player like what you're describing. I've settled for mixzing, but not a huge fan. Apparently the paid version of winamp offers folder based playing as well as gapless playback. I'm a big fan of electronica, so this has made winamp a major consideration as my next app purchase. Check it out if you haven't yet, might fit what you're looking for. Good luck.

Why can't android developers make a working music player?

I'm sorry I know this isn't exactly the place to post this, and sorry for the all caps. But I AM TOTALLY ENRAGED BECAUSE NOBODY WOULD MAKE SOMETHING SO SIMPLE! and nobody would give an explanation as to why!
First of all, I know your music players can in fact, play music files, I tried every single music player avilable, yes I'm not kidding I tried all of them, over 50 of them. Most of them will start and play music. But that's not what's I'm after nor the reason I am so enraged.
Here is why:
THEY WON'T SHOW THE FULL ALBUM ART!!!!!
The ONLY music player, I repeat, the ONLY one out of over 50, that shows your embedded album art properly is the Neutron Music Player, but it's paied and I can't buy **** from the country I'm currently in. and the beep version is too old the touch controls suck.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
What's so difficult? You can make all these more difficult features work sometimes perfectly, but you can't make this very simple task of showing a jpeg image properly? Many of these features I have no idea why they have priority over showing an album art, especially when they seem more difficult to develop. I'm just glad I don't have an android tablet, I can't imagine how crappy it would look on one of those! I'm glad I use the iPad and all of my album art show perfectly in full quality it's just fantastic.
- lyrics and time stamped lyrics support. what's the point? most of you probably listen to music in your native language, what you can't understand what they're singing? Shouldn't you already know most of the lyrics in your collection? this seems like a difficult feature to develop because you have to make a scrollable surface for text ontop of the UI. Isn't that more difficult than just putting up a picture? in fact you have to show an album art anyway! why not just make it show the orginal one instead of the scaled down crappy version? it's like 5 minutes of coding!
- automaticly download album art and lyrics. I just don't get it, if you have pirated music you're too lazy to sort, get on a PC and there are plenty of programs for that! why would you do it over mobile network on your phone!?
-socal network intergration. I'm sorry I never use any of these features, I don't see the point of letting your friends know what you're listening every 5 minutes.
- n-band equalizer. get a better headphone, instead of your stock headset. it's 10 times more effective than any equalizer. the math involved in this must be very difficult especially those that can prevent capping or smooth the curve. Why does this have priority over the basic feature of showing an album art?
===============================================================================
A good music player is really very easy! but none of them will got that tiny final step! It's pissing me off!
Google Play Music: all you need to do is show the embedded album art, and get rid of that stupid blue background, just make it black!
Neutron Music Player: get someone to make you a new skin without all those 2006 style 3D effects.
Apollo Music Player: have an option to turn off the altomatic download, show the embedded album art.
================================================
ok I just saw another thread giving out a bounty for a fix. Maybe I should do the same. I'll also put up a bounty of $50 for a music player that satisfies the following requirements:
-has the basic functions of a music player (play, pause, shuffle, supports MP3/FLAC/AAC)
-displays tag information such as artist, album, title, etc. with full support for unicode, no question marks, random symbols or squares.
-shows the FULL album art embedded in the file it is currently playing, with good quality scaling method without stretching, and without size limit (at least not below 2mb)
-appealing UI. For example, Apollo. Or some of the Chinese music players. Or the MIUI/ Meizu MX defult music players. NOT LIKE PowerAMP/ PlayerPro/ Neutron Player. The album art must at least fit inside the screen, meaning 720pixels wide or more.
-Power efficient, uses NEON instructions.
-buttery smooth
-ad free
optional:
-has lockscreen (Jelly Bean default) integration with FULL album art embedded in the file it is currently playing, with good quality scaling method.
-shows embedded lyrics
It does NOT have to include these features:
-sort by album/artist/recents or any other categories. as long as it has a list of songs I'm happy.
-anything to do with internet, streaming, downloading, free music none of that.
-equalizers, effects
woo you got a new phone there, what is it? android?
yea, the HTC one X on the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean! here have a try! it's smoother than iOS!
oh cool! I heard it's also quad-core right? must be really fast!
of cours, browsing is a breeze!
how about music? I see it's got Beats Audio, is it a good music player?
errrr well it makes sound, if that's what you mean. but the sound chip isn't exactly top notch.
wait, what's that? why do your album arts look like crap?
errrr, for some reason all android music players show the crappy scaled down version?
What? why? you're been talking about all these high end hardware, the Infinity Display, the quad-core processor and the 1GB RAM. All these, but you can't even see the full album art? WTF? what a piece of ****!
Don't forget to add proper album track listing in order.. My pet peeve

play doesnt use embedded art?
Ive used a few players over my stay with android, my vote is with google play music. jet audio player was pretty kick ass too but i didnt like the restricted options for free version(and it let the system dsp take over if present)
for google play music personally like the blue background, after all it matches the ics/jb theme. and unlike jet player, doesnt get choppy on lock/unlock and orientation change.
btw, embedded album art for google play... miss something?

Obviously I tried it, you know heres a funny thing I use PlayerPro and it does show full album art
N7player does a good job finding album art, better than iTunes IMO because I export my library from iTunes using iSyncr and iTunes has failed to locate album art for several albums I have however N7 can locate many more covers that are missing once on my phone in addition you can tell N7 to place the art in your music folder so it can be made available to other players if you don't like N7's interface. i keep just shy of 12GB of music on my phone and i'm pretty happy with the album art situation myself it's more complete than on my iPod or iPhone.
you also need to keep in mind that all players have to search a database in order to recover album art and making sure all the relevant info is in your ID3 tags will help alot in getting the correct art.
You don't need to whine to make a point (which you do, or maybe not as it seems that you didn't dig deep enough in your pursuit).
1) Here's a surprise for you: mobile phones, and particularly smartphones, have their screen turned off when they're used as MP3 players. They'll usually be stuck in a pocket, not displaying album art. They play music, and keeping the screen on to show the cover art takes a hit on the battery.
2) Here's another surprise for you: few people bother with album art. People play pirated music.
3) And here's another surprise for you:
most of you probably listen to music in your native language, what you can't understand what they're singing?

is an utter falsehood. People will listen to whatever sounds cool to them, be it gangsta ebonics at its finest, Levan's Polka or J-Pop.
What has value in music apps is not cover art: that's tertiary for most people. What differentiates them is usually format support (yes, lossless formats are not a given in all players), sorting algorithms (yes, people want to sort their music) and interfaces (there I agree that an overhaul may be necessary in the top dogs).
Are you starring at your music album art while playing music and keep screen on?
I think most people just play music while screen off. Doesnt make sense. The most important of music player is how they produce sound quality! Not album art!
And one more things is go make you own music player if you good enough or DONT USE ANDROID!!!
BTW I prefer Google Play Music.

Poweramp issue, please help!

Hi, thanks in advance for the help.
I recently copied a lot of music from my computer to my phone, and I use Poweramp to play it. Everything is fine except for an annoying problem which I will try to describe as best as I can:
Each song has a length obviously, however, when in Poweramp, this length is increased for every song, producing a sort of very long gap at the end of every song. For example, if my song is 3:20 of music, Poweramp will add 15 more secs of useless space at the end of it, making it 3:35. Should I click the progress bar right at the end of the song, it will do nothing but immediately change to the next track (for example, if I want to play the last 5 seconds, nothing will play but it will only play the next track).
Summary: Poweramp adds useless, not even playable space at the end of every track.
I have tried doing a full rescan, a rescan, changing track names, clearing data, clearing cache.. nothing.
Can you please help me?

I've had this problem before and I still have it now. It seems like poweramp doesn't like manually encoded mp3's. So did you encode some? Like used a youtube to mp3 converter etc? If you did then the problem will arise. If you are patient enough you can encode the mp3 files again using audacity and export them as a 320kbps ones or you could just buy the original music through itunes or somewhere that legally sells downloadable mp3's

I don't know about Audials but yeah somehow Poweramp doesn't really like programs converting the mp3 files. And about Audacity I just accidentally found out about it and it works wonders after it exports the mp3 files and weirdly poweramp doesn't add those additional 15secs of playtime.

BUT you tend to lose even more quality when converting from lossy to lossy AFAIK... It would work as a temporary solution though. Thanks for the tip!

i'm no music expert but yeah it would lose quality but the difference is unnoticeable imo. The app is really quite good and really stands out of all the music apps on the playstore. And nope i haven't contacted them about this issue as I've downloaded most of my music on itunes so no additional encodes were required.
If you don't add any more compression and change encoding - you wont lose quality. Its not the process that loses quality, its your settings

I was checking and analyzing everything today and it does have to do with the encoding. I had mp3s that were shown on iTunes as 'MPEG Audio' and some others as 'MPEG Audio File'. The first ones had the problem when added to Poweramp, the other ones didn't.
