there is an app to controll canon dslr's by chainfire that I am vary interested in, It requires that the tablet support usb host. does anyone happen to know if the NT supports usb host ?
It is not supported yet but it is in the "todo" list of devs. We need a kernel that support that and it seems that devs are going to wait or start working in a 3.0 kernel(a project about this started in development section) as it is needed for vital support of other features, it will also help to run ubuntu much better.

what's a little strange is that the Nook Color does support usb host or at least it's on the compatible tablet list from chainfire.
Anyway thank you for shearing your knowledge with me.
from what I know, the tablet has the hardware albeit not complete nor the best as the nook color. What is missing is the kernels which sets it up for use. So the best we can do is wait and not pester the devs

I do not believe that the Vibrant hardware supports USB Host mode. To do that the vibrant (and it's battery) would need to provide at least 100mv (I think thats min) to the 5v vbus to power the accessory.
The USB port is now set to draw power (for charging etc) not provide power.
edit: check out the Nook Color forum. There they have (sort of) gotten the Nook to support USB Host mode using a powered USB hub. It took a kernel change and app to switch. It's different on the Nook as it uses open source bootlaoders (Das u-boot.bin) vs. the closed source Samsung boot.bin, sbl.bin we are stuck with.
I looked into this a while ago. The best efforts were attempting to use Sven's Nexus USB Host Mode hack. Unfortunately the hardware is so different between the two models that the hack simply wouldn't work. No one else it seemed took up the torch to make this work. Can't seem to find the thread discussing this. It was like 8 months ago.
And the power issues of the phone are easily negated by using a powered USB hub in the chain between phone and device. The only limiting factor for the Galaxy is not having a supported driver.

Officially accessory mode is implemented starting with Android 2.3.4. In this mode Android phone is an accessory to some host external hardware and receiving power (0.5A) out of the host.
Host mode is implemented officially only on tablet Honeycomb 3.1. I think Google made external usb devices such as memory, keyboards, and mice usable for Honeycomb tablets.
If you are interested find IOIO project which uses ADB for bridging external hardware on Android before 2.3.4.
Any update on accessory mode in gingerbread? I see that some new 2.3.5 stuff is out.
Would like to get working on developing external hardware to interface these sweet machines.

I wish I was bringing you an answers but instead, I'm asking the same question. Every few weeks I scour the web for an alternative to iDisplay, specifically something that is wired for speed. I travel over half the year and I'm in the habit of lugging a small monitor with me so I can work efficiently. I know Toshiba has a portable usb monitor...isn't there a way to make our tablet's function this way as well?
If there is anything out there to try/buy or support? I'm in. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks for putting your name on the list! I have been looking everywhere for something that could work with no luck. It doesn't seem like it should be hard to tap into the screen of a tablet through usb. Especially seeing as we have the drivers and what not.
Tapping into the monitor would be nice but to take it a step further, integration would be optimal. Such as the integration of the two touchscreens in the acer notebook. Your android device could be used as a virtual navigation device, you could use it to hold windows or play media, or you could even use it in art related programs as a drawing tablet.
It seems like there should be a bigger demand for this. I'm surprised there isn't
I've been interested in developing stuff like this for a while now, but unfortunately, I just haven't found the time to devote to such Android development.
For this to work, your PC would be acting as the USB host. The tablet would still just be a USB device connected to your PC like it always is (you would not be using your tablet as a hosting device for this). The PC would need the proper driver software (which, as noted, already exists). But software on the tablet would also have to advertise and implement additional usb profiles/protocols in order to inform the host that it has additional USB monitor/touchscreen functionality. This is the part that to my knowledge, does not yet exist. (if it does, let me know, ya'll may have done more research on this than I have)
In other words, yeah, there are drivers for a PC that know how to talk to a usb monitor/touchscreen. But on the other end there needs to be software that knows how to act as a usb monitor/touchscreen and fulfill the other half of that conversation. When you buy a usb monitor/touchscreen from Wacom or Toshiba, they're providing a device which already knows how to act and talk as a usb monitor/touchscreen. But that software is running on their device, so unless they've made some libraries available somewhere or there are some standard libraries available somewhere for this, it isn't as easy as one might think.
This might make more sense if you consider a simpler device like a usb keyboard. Your PC knows how to receive keystrokes from a usb keyboard because it has the appropriate driver software. However, if you wanted your tablet to act as a usb keyboard, you would need software on the tablet that knows how to send keystrokes over USB using the standard usb protocols/profiles.

I purchased a USB OTG cable for my Archos G9 I'm getting for Christmas (two days!)
I tried a mouse, 4 flash drives and a keyboard, knowing that the Ace most likely doesn't include Host mode.. It didn't work at all, So I was wondering if any kernels support it or roms?
I know it can be hacked through like kernel modules, Just wondering how much work it would be to create modules and drivers for it? I'm not that experienced with creating kernel modules and what not, I've created and ported roms and fixed kernels before for the GT540 and to be honest, I'm really not that good at it haha.
Does anyone know anything we could do to make it work?

Its supported by the CPU as Qualcomm have said before, so its up to Samsung or a pretty cool and nice dev All the drivers and Kernel Modules are on the page I linked to so it'd be a case of making it all relative to the Ace and its kernel

Any news of anyone building the correct Kernel for the Ace II in order to support USB Host ?
II have a Samsung engineer getting back to me about if Ace II Android 4.1.2 can mount external USB devices, but unless Samsung supports this II'll have to replace Android with something that can.
Needing this for photo transfer from camera SD card. I could use a mini SD card but just paid out for a highest speed SDHC card. Anyway those llittle SD mini SD cards are too easy to lose on mountaintops and that kind of thing

Like the above post said...you'll need Rom+Kernel support enabled...as of right now the kernel is only working on some evo3D's but not all. Chad has stated his next sense kernel should have it working on all evo3d's that have Rom support. At this time I think the only Rom confirmed working with Host mode is Olympus. I'm running Chad's Kernel & Olympus but still haven't got it to work. I'm just waiting for Chad to finish up his release, can't wait !!

The truth did not know very well where to place this post, but I think the media is the main function and see if you're lucky, the idea is to propose or if anyone knows, the android can control from your PC, as the case Samsung TVs that recognize the application MHL Device Anynet + (post link). The idea is to connect mobile phone to a computer with a touch screen and control it from the screen contenplando the quality of this type of connection and future applications, CarPC, game systems, internet browsers.
So far the closest I've seen is through a remote program or Android QtADB Commander, but they perform a virtualization and graphics functions are very limited (videos, photos, games, etc. ..).
An interesting idea would be that an application for Android was able to control the touch screen driver THROUGH USB host our phones, this topic is more interesting and juicy indeed already been mentioned in some places but unfortunately I guess we have to wait to get the ICS to Partin, do not you think?.

I am looking for info on how to set up a Xbox 360 wired (USB) controller on my Motorola Photon 4g. While searching around, i came to the conclusion that i'll need a Kernel that supports USG OTG or USB Host Mode, and, i think in theory,

The problems are
i) my photon is on its way home, so i cant test anything here atleast for the next 3-4 days.
ii) I do not know of a kernel compatible with photon that supports USB Host mode.
iii) in the above diagram, the supply from the USB charger/Adapter goes to both the Phone's USB, as well as the Controller's USB power lines. Would that not be a problem for the phone? i mean why should i be inputting +5V on the power lines of the phone's USB? could it potentially damage the phone? I've played with an iPod's USB, and i am scared.
Can u guys help me in the points above?

Also, i wont be buying a 99USD HD Docking Station to use the Controller or other Peripherals.

USB Host is not the issue as the Photon supports USB Host out of the box so any blur based rom should work just fine. Not sure about the CM7 or CM9 family of roms. I remember having to push pretty hard just to get BT mouse support for CM7 on the Evo.
The main issue you will run into is driver support for the controller. The XBox controller gives a device not recognized. PC controllers may be hit or miss but I've tried four or five with no success. Your best options are WIImote w/ classic controller or PS3 controller running over Bluetooth. If cost is a concern then look at off brand WII and PS3 controllers or get one used.
Another thing you will need to consider is game support. You would think a game like Galaxy on Fire 2 would support controllers but it does not. Only a handful of games support controller input directly the rest require custom input mapping and third party apps like "Sixaxis Controller" or "Wiimote Controller", to name a few. You will also find that proper analog mapping is generally limited to pay apps and when using the controller it acts as you input for the phone and not just games.
I guess I could put together a "Photon as game console" guide but am a bit buried in projects right now.

does that mean even in USB Host Mode, the Photon 4G would require Device Drivers to be ported for android first and then it'll be able to work with the device? Its a little strange because i have read a lot on these forums, and none pointed out that we needed any drivers, all the posts said was that USB OTG/ USB Host Mode is required. (all the Nexus S gaming threads just ask one to install a particular kernel having USB Host Support, which the Photon already has, and plus an app in market namely USB Host Controller by SzTupY)
Game support ofcourse has been taken in mind.A few Tegra 2 games support Controllers, i mean the ones that actually need a controller (as in it would be better to play them with a controller)
Apart from the drivers (which with all due respect to u, i need to be reassured about, because of what i have read in the posts, plus, on other Android phones, specially the Nexus S, people have reported other Controllers working too) what about the Schematic diagram i made above? would it work fine according to you?

Plug an XBox360 controller into the USB port on a lapdock or HD Dock. Result, "USB Device not recognized. Supported devices includes USB Storage, keyboards and mice." In short, no drivers. If you see somebody using a usb controller on a phone, pay close attention to the phone that's being used. Example, the GS III is a freak of nature. I'd kill for 500GB external drive support.
Different phones support different things. The original Nexus had a mod that allowed for use of usb graphics cards. The original Evo's hardware supported usb host but drivers were never written for it.
Again, your best and most trouble free option is a bluetooth controller.
If it helps give you an idea as to where I'm coming from. I've been trying to get a phone/tabletdock/lapdock/mediapc/carpc/gameconsole built since about 2003 so I feel your pain.

I believe he already answered this when he said to use bluetooth controllers. Use a p3 or a wii controller.

when i asked him what others are supported, i meant what controllers else than the PS3 bluetooth and the WIImote controller are supported. On IM it was clarified that any Generic/non Sony but -for PS3- controller should be working fine with this phone, and that was what i was precisely asking.
