I have a dual Booted Tablet. When I hit the N button it usually asks me if I want to go home or ADW Launcher(The launcher I chose). Now it stays on the original Nook screen and randomly opens up different books on its own and flips pages on its own. Also, the option to open up ADW is gone. if I hit the N button it just opens up whatever book I was reading last. I turned the device and back on but it acts the same way. Can anyone help me?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'dual booted'. With CM7?
Similar behavior to what you describe (things opening randomly, pages flipping, etc.) usually happens when the battery is very low. I've also seen it happen trying to use USB power adapters that don't really work correctly for the NT. Make sure you're not operating on a very low charge or other power issue.
I used Indirect's Root. I was able to keep the original Nook look as well as boot into another launcher. It was working fine until yesterday. Now the Home button doesn't do what it should but the main thing is that the screen types and writes all on its own. I heard about the low power setting issues with some people. My Nook was at 60% so I don't know if that's considered low enough to be under that umbrella

I can't help you with your problem, but I want to make things clear.
You don't have dual boot or anything like that, you just installed alternative launcher application.
In general you have the same stock firmware you had before rooting with addition of a few apps, allowing you to do more, than B&N wants you to be able to do.

This is correct.
Disclaimer: I am a noob. Please take the following suggestions with a grain of salt.
Perhaps, clearing the homecatcher defaults will clear things up?
Alternatively, you could try installing a different launcher, such as golauncher, and see if it behaves as strangely as your current configuration.

Well I would just install another launcher but the problem is that I can't access the other launcher any longer. The Home button doesn't work like its supposed to but instead opens up the Nook's Book Library. The whole thing just started acting weird and randomly the keyboard would pop up and write by itself in addition to opening and closes the book Library. Its been acting like it has a virus. I factory reset it but unfortunately it didnt help. So I figure my screen is faulty

I got the same few hours after I rooted but using go launcher, just clean your screan very very clean if you haven't put a screen protector on it, then make sure its charged. Now try to open anything in that you could find a link click on it so it opens the browser then go to the android.market.com and download another launcher. After that I took my tablet and removed all the B&N crap apps, ijust left the games. Don't forget to apply the OTA block again.
Advice: remove home catcher.
PS: you could also use adb to push a new launcher but as you factory reseted usb debugging must be disabled, you need can enable it again by downloading tgps_launcher.apk from indirects root thread using the Nook browser.

Have you tried going in to manage apps and deselect the default for ADW, B&N's Home Launcher and Homecatcher if your using it? I use button savior so I have software buttons rather than the n button. by deselecting the default launcher you should get a window again asking which launcher do you want to use as home.

Anyone experienced this weird problem before? After some use of about few min usage with 2 or more apps running, if the HOME button is pushed, it would reset the launcher and ask me to pick the default launcher again. I have ADW Launcher, Touchwiz, and LauncherPro. Everytime it does this by prompting "> Complete action using ...", I select ADW and checkmark "Use by default for this action." Some 10 - 20 min later, it loses the selection and ask me again even after reboot, uninstall, reinstall, same problem. I have stock froyo ROM, but rooted, with other kernels. I had latest supercurio kernel, it had same problem. I'm testing Overstock kernel, still same problem. The problem is not so bad, it is bearable as long as I don't press the HOME button. It just gets annoying and happened like 70% of the time of pushing that button. Anyone knows how to fix this? Danke.

I had a similar issue recently. It was an app (MoboPlayer) causing it. Every time I would long press the home button it would lose the default setting. The dev recently fixed it, but I'd suggest having a look at what apps you recently installed and do some testing.

Wait so you are saying an app can cause this? I thought the apps are chrooted (sandboxed) so can't really affect each other except for OS affecting them. What's the best way to figure out what was recently installed? I have lots. If none, I guess I can try uninstall all the apps...and reinstall just a few to see if that holds up.

Just a idea..
-Have Titanium backup.
Backup the launchers(keep 1 there though you need 1), if you have to save the data, save the data.
uninstall it.
reboot.
restore it
that might work?
or erasing the data from the apps might work too

I thought the same thing, but it was definitely MoboPlayer causing it for me. It went away when I uninstalled, and returned immediately when I reinstalled it. I emailed the dev and he fixed it.
If you have Titanium Backup, under the Backup/Restore tab, you can tap the "ordered by" header to sort by install date.
When this happens the easy fix is to go task manager and shut all programs it will reset for you your settings np. This happens to me occasionally when my 4yr old plays with my phone, somehow she jacks it up and erases some the launchers like the phone, etc. So, I found this restores easily.
The problem was ADW.Launcher Free. Without it, things seem alot more stable.
I have a solution
I was struggling with this very issue. I thought it was due to partially corrupt system data. I installed another ROM, from scratch, rebuilt it to my specifications, then added a different launcher once again (different one this time). Rebooting resulted in the default lost and also all widgets showing with an "error loading widget" message in their place.
I finally figured out what was going on. It's because I had selected the option "move to SD card" as the default when installing applications. So, the launcher was on the SD card. Well, this creates a problem with timing, because the SD card is prepared a little later on in the boot process, after the required time to load the launcher. The result? Android draws up the default launcher. And for some reason, the older launcher ends up compromised with some of its default settings.
Once I moved my launcher app back to phone memory, the problem went away.
OKay, so this is my first android phone, coming from an Iphone 4 and let me tell you im about 80% disappointed.
Here are some problems im having, im hoping that you can help me turn that 80 into a 20.
1. Apps just randomly run in the background: I'll close all but my live background, my task manager and my alarm clock and go to sleep. When I wake up almost EVERY SINGLE app I have is running in the background. Why? How do I stop this, the Iphone never did this, I feel this is a hard fail on androids part.
2. Many apps force close while im trying to use them: Ive tried stock rom, and serenity 8, same apps same issues. Its becoming a turn off to use the phone for any apps.
3. Multitasking: Is there any? MOST of the time when I switch apps and "multitask" its just like having the app open at the start page, I dont have to reload the app but its not where I last left it like the Iphone. Even on web pages I find if I switch out of the web and go to another app if I return to the web im back at my home page and I have to go to my history just to get back where I was. Is there a way for me to fix this?
4: Ram usage: when I turn my phone off, then on I see 150 in the used ram. This number raises even with out opening any apps. I kill all apps and close all running programs I see nothing running except services and it raises as high as 600 mb with 0 apps open and nothing running except a live background and the task manager. My iphone never had a memory leak, how do I fix this? 600 mb to do nothing is a bit excessive.
As a software developer im really confused as how Google tricked everyone that android was good. Perhaps Im just uninformed and that is why I am here. I am wondering why there would be all these problems right out of the box on an item that is what 4th 5th generation? These are problems that shouldnt be as frequent in 1st and 2nd generations. Any help would be wonderful thank you.
1. this question has been asked a million times. In short, the Android OS handles memory much different than you'd expect. An app will appear as running after you close it but it may not be. Android just keeps that memory allocated to that app in case you need to use it again. But if the OS needs that memory for something else, it will release it from that app and use it for something else.
2. what apps FC on you?
3. i'll leave this for someone else to explain because I dont use the browser much so I dont have much experience with that.
4. this goes along with my answer for #1. Android OS likes to have its memory allocated but it doesnt mean those apps are running.
I might be a little off on my explanation so I'll leave it to the experts to clarify but i'm pretty sure i'm fairly accurate.
1/4 - Not deficiencies, Android is designed that way. If an app is resident in memory, it is more readily accessible. Some badly written apps DO more than just sit there in the task list - but most are OK. Sitting in memory is not bad - holding a wakelock or showing up in your battery usage is.
2 - No clue - not having this problem here. I haven't seen an FC in a few weeks, and the last one was my own fault. What apps?
3) This depends on the app. However, usually the browser returns to wherever I last was when I use it. In fact I wish it were easier to "go home"...
3) Matter of using the right button. Close the app with the home button, and restart it where it left off. Back out of the app with the back button, and start over.
List off apps that FC on me Both stock and Serenity 8:
Alarm Clock Plus
Chase
email
Gmail
hootsuite
maps
market
netflix

web
Also no matter how I work the web 60% of the time I start back at my home page.
Lastly to do anything on android it seems like a process, just to switch from one app to another I have to do this, then that, then this, now im on my other app... Iphones multitasking is button click im there. Is there a multitasking app that works kinda like iphones? I really like the tray that holds ALL my open apps. Im trying hard to like this phone and android but being able to customize and have widgets just does not seem like it is worth it. Unless there are some really big secrets im missing.

i really dont know what to tell you about the FC's because none of those FC on me ... whether I was stock or not. That just doesnt sound right. If you're stock, it shouldn't be FC'ing at all. I can understand if you're rooted and running S8 or some other ROM. Maybe something happened during the flash but stock should be fine.
I'm also trying out the browser on my phone and if I load a random website, go home, open another app and go back to the browser, its still on the last page I viewed.

If you're swithing from app to app, and want to do it more quickly, hold the home button for a few seconds (pretty much anywhere, no need to go 'home' first). It will open up a list of the last 6 apps you've used. Pretty sure from the point you left off.
holding the home button does work pretty well, although sometimes it does not have the last couple apps I was using, mainly Go SMS pro. I am currently running S8 thought it was stable, guess i'll reflash and give this another go for a week, if not then its return to the IP and trade this back for the 4s. Thanks for the help!
Any suggestion on what rom to flash to?
Having THAT many apps FC on you is usually a sign that you did one of two things:
1) Forgot to wipe data/factory reset when installing a new ROM
2) Performed an improper Titanium Backup restore - restoring more than just "MISSING apps and data"

I'm running Serendipity 8.1 and do not have any problems with these apps from your list. You may need to re-flash.

any of them are good but I personally use UnNamed. You really should wipe your phone first. Thats probably why you have so many FC's. When you flash a new rom, make sure you do NOT restore system apps via Titanium Backup (if thats what you use).

To switch between running apps all you have to do is long press the home button - one press to see the last six open apps and your there.
Having the browser return to the home page every time just means you don't know what you are doing.
Being concerned about what is being held in ram its also a sign you don't know what you are doing. The memory chip where the ram resides, where you see a list of apps being held has to remain powered on all the time. Whether it is holding 250 MB of data, 500 MB of data or just 10 MB of data it will still be drawing the same amount of power. And just because an apps data is being held in ram does not necessarily mean it is running. Top see what us running you need to check cpu usage.
The only time to concerned about ram is if more than 85% is being used then you would start having problems. But this does not happen on our phones, and only would happen if you had something causing a major memory leak.
All of your force closes are related to you or your particular phone. I have maybe five fc's in a month and three of those happened while I was running cm7.

Lot of user error here. I'm on the stock ROM with root.
Switch apps quickly by holding home.
If you use the back button to exit an app then you truly are exiting the app. Use home if you want it to start running.
Don't worry about ram usage. This device has 1GB and Android manages it very well without you ever having to worry.
I never have force closes unless it's the developers issue. If you're running from backed up apps then you can expect to have FCs. Install from fresh if you try a new ROM.

I think the main reason the op is having his browser reset most of the time is because the op is using some kind if task killer. This task killer is also probably the cause of a significant portion of the fc's being experienced.
There should be a forum rule against people who run task killers then complain about fc's, laggy apps, and problems with multitasking.
I mean it should be obvious running a "task killer" on a device designed specifically to multitask - it is so silly. Look at the two phrases side by side "task killer" "multitasking device" - can you see what I mean.

Just because you don't know how to use a device does not make the device a general fail. Let's put the blame where it belongs, on the guy who has no understanding on what is going on with the processes in the device and drawing conclusions on based on an obviously ignorant perception those observations.

Samsung has a tips and tricks page specifically for the AT&T GS2 that may show you some things you didn't know. One thing I didn't know was that you can take a screenshot with stock by pressing the power button and the home button at the same time. I also didn't know you can access the clipboard to show everything you "copied" from text fields.

As far as the OP's issues, I have all of those apps except for chase and hootsuite installed on stock and I don't FC at all. For the browser concerns, you may just be opening a new window each time you run the browser from the app icon. Try zooming all the way out of the page and then pinch to zoom out once more and it will show you the windows you have open, or you can press the menu key and select windows. The icon for "windows" in the menu will have a number on it if you have more than one open.

So I was all rooted. I had Go Launcher, Market, and Swiftkey all working awesomely. My NT life was good. Then Swiftkey started throwing up errors. So I went to Any Cut to find a shortcut to Swiftkey's settings. There was like 8 settings under activities but not a specific Swiftkey settings. So I created shortcuts to the 8 settings and thought I would try them all and maybe one was for swiftkey.
When I clicked on the second settings shortcut the NT through up an error that stated there was an authorization error and the tablet would reset. When the tablet restarted it forced a wipe to factory settings. I thought...that sucks...but whatever I'll start over.
When the tablet had finished and restarted It started to go through the setup screens as one might expect. However, Swiftkey is apparently still selected as the keyboard and the NT keeps giving the Swiftkey force close errors. I can't enter in my registration info because I haven't an effin' keyboard. I didn't have usb debugging turned on so I don't think I can use adb to remove swiftkey. Although, I've never really used ADB unless I'm rooting and following very specific instructions from one of these forums.
Is there a way to bypass the initial registration and sign in crud so I can install root explorer and remove Swiftkey?
Sorry for the long story. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion on how to fix this.
Thanks in advance.
tldr- NT hard reset and now stuck without keyboard because Swiftkey was still selected and Swift key won't work during initial registration....argh!
Tip the screen corners starting top left in clockwise motion.
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Factory_Mode/Skip_Out_of_Box_Experience
This has worked for people to skip registering their device good luck god bless.
I did test this method when i got t the last prompt to skip Oobe(out of the box experience) I did get a force close error. However I just reopened the menu by hitting the volume up and the lower right portion of the screen. The Oobe button came back up and i clicked it with success, bypassing the registration.
Well I was able to bypass the Nook Experience BS...Thanks for the tip! But I still didn't have a keyboard to download any apps from the browser. So I created an epub file with Callibre that contained web addresses of all the software I needed to get rid of Swiftkey from system/app. I then transfered the epub to the nook...opened it with Nook's reader....selected a web address....and did a google lookup from within the reader. I was able to download and install what I needed, and it worked. All Better.

I think what you did is really smart( never mind the semi brick part) and important. This could help out a lot of people that lose keyboard access or other issues that occur. Using the nook reader with google search was a great way around your problem.
SwiftKey force closes on me randomly and will not stop until I re-run the apk inside /System/App again but after that it works fine for awhile. I wonder if it's just SwiftKey because I haven't tried any other keyboards yet
I've noticed several keyboards don't stick after a reboot. Thickbuttons and Hackers seems to be the only 2 I've tried that do stick.

The scary part was that the NT forced a random wipe on it's own after a quick error about "authorization."
Sorry didn't know about the authentification error and I was joking about the semi brick part. I just thought your recovery method could help somebody out of semi brick hell.
No need to say sorry. I knew you were joking. And hopefully, it will help someone else.
Hi,
I followed the very good instructions to move my Tablet's firmware to 1.4.0 (was 1.4.1 out of the box) and to then root it. (Much thanks to Indirect and AdamOutler and everyone else!)
During the root script, I chose NOT to debloat and to go with the ADW launcher.
Everything went smoothly and I've rebooted it several times now. However, I can't seem to access the (B&N installed) nook reader anymore. I do have an icon for "NookViewer" in my apps, but when I select it I get a white screen that does nothing. I also tried downloading the "B&N Nook" app from the Android Marketplace, which installed correctly (it says), but when I select it, I get sent to the ADW home page and nothing else happens.
Does anyone have any idea how to get either one to work, short of me wiping it back to 1.4.0 and starting over again?
Thanks,
Peter
Hi Peter,
I might have had a similar issue, and it involves the defaults for home launching. When you were choosing whether to launch the "home" (which is nook home) and "ADWLauncher", did you check the box to launch ADWLauncher by default? I did that with GoLauncher and could not get back to the nook home screen.
The way this issue is solved is by finding the application settings for your launcher (in your case ADWLauncher, in mine it was GoLauncher) and clearing the defaults. When you go back to the rooted home screen and double click the n button, you should see the prompt for your launcher or the home launcher. Select home and you will be back to the nook reader.
I hope this helps.
In the video it looked very easy to switch back and forth without any prompts. I am curious how that was performed.
I'm having the same issue as the OP. I'll let him chime in but if I understand correctly this is not an issue with being able to see the B&N default launcher. As I understand the issue is that the NookViewer, which does appear in the AWD Launcher (or other launcher), is non-functional. When selected all you get is a blank white screen.
Ok, I took this as the issue:
However, I can't seem to access the (B&N installed) nook reader anymore.

Otherwise I am seeing the same issue with NookViewer where a blank screen is open. I provided a way to get back to the nook reader, although I'm sure there is a more elegant procedure. I have no idea what the issue with NookViewer is or what NookViewer is supposed to do.
Dito here
I have rooted, de-bloated, and went with the ADW. I too have the exact same issue, when you click on the reader icon, I get a completely blank white screen.
I have not tried any type of fix, because I am having greater issues with the MarketPlace saying the N.T. is not compatible with most apps.

I have not tried any type of fix, because I am having greater issues with the MarketPlace saying the N.T. is not compatible with most apps.

Have you tried this for apps compatibility

I will have to try this out. The market used to let me download more than it does now. In fact one app that I downloaded to the market now has an update. When I go to update it says that my device isn't compatible! I would assume this would correct that. Are there any potential drawback to modifying the build.prop?
I am not sure, but I don't think you can click on the reader to make it work. You need to go to the library. From the library, you select what you want to read, that brings up the nook reader. I have links to download the reader and the library; you have to have both, but the library is the executable.

If you went with snoball-mod it removes all B&N apps including the reader from the device and depending on which Debloat option you choose in indirects root script it can remove all B&N apps as well

That makes sense and going to the library is what I do to access and read my B&N material. So even though it doesn't impact the ability to read B&N material I guess it's more of a "why is it doing that?" issue. I know after I rooted my Nook the first thing I did was click on every icon to see what it was. The Nook Viewer was the only one that seemed to not work (but again your explaination makes sense).
I have a rooted Nook Tablet with Go Launcher and have a problem creating shortcuts. Using Go Launcher, if I press and hold the home screen and select "shortcut", it just does nothing. If I use the lower menu and do add-->shortcut, it also does nothing. If I use Anycut-->New Shortcut-->Direct Call, I get a popup saying "The application Any Cut (process com.android.anycut) has stopped unexpectedly. Please retry again.) I've checked the root permissions on anycut, and they seem fine.
I've been using the rooted Nook Tablet for three months now with no real issues. I don't know if this problem is recent, or has been that way for a long time. I hadn't tried doing a shortcut until today. I appreciate any advice someone might have that has an insight into this problem.
I had the same issue on rooted stock. There seems to be no shortcut selection apk on the stock rom; maybe it can be ripped from another device. I was going to try yanking it from my phone but don't have the patience.

Well at least someone else has experienced this. That's helpful. I read posts that indicated that people were able to use the shortcut feature of Go Launcher on a Nook Tablet, so I wonder if there's something related to my gapps installation, OTA block mod, or other tweaks I've made and have since forgotten. It's not a big deal, so I can easily await a stable CM9 release sometime in the future.
