i would love to know because i really like miui but the one thing that is letting it down for me is the camera app

Not sure it's possible... Don't think it is, since I believe the camera app relies on some of the Touch Wiz framework, which MIUI doesn't have.

maybe you could test to get native 4.0 keys working in aokp or cm9

Reboot into recovery? Use reboot recovery adb/terminal command

I've tried it and it just makes the status bar keep force closing. You just end up with no notifications
