[Q] How can we download certain apps in 4.0? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to maybe spoof the Android Market so that we can download apps that it says we can't install because it's incompatible on the device? The main example is My Verizon because it's useful for monitoring data usage.

If you are running ICS it has the data feature built into it.

I don't know about everyone else, but that's never worked for me. I'm not really worried about it cause I have unlimited data, but if you do want the Verizon app you can always sideload it. I've seen the apk floating around various places.

So far, I've never had data usage actually actively work. Although oddly the wifi data usage operates correctly. I like the My Verizon app though because it tells you your actual usage from their side, as opposed to the 4.0 feature or an app like Onavo, which I'm using, that has inaccuracies.
I'm actually the person who asked for it in JT/TeamHacksung's thread on RootzWiki but I just realized I didn't word the thread correctly because I'm more trying to see how to update some of the apps that the Market says are incompatible.

Looking for an App

Hello all,
I went online to My Bell the other day to check up on my data usage, not at all concerned as I have a 6Gb/month plan & only used less than 1 Gb in my first month, even after downloading a ton of apps, do imagine my surprise when I used almost 4Gb so far! Fortunately, my month is almost over..... Obviously, there was an app that never closed properly and was constantly streaming data.... Over 2.3Gb in one session!
So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an app that will monitor how much data individual apps are using, so I can keep an eye on it, or perhaps get rid of it altogether...
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Did you try something as simple as typing "monitor data" into the Market? There are a ton of apps that do what you're asking.

Of course I did...but so far, all I can find are apps that tell me the total data usage overall. What I'm looking for is an app that will break the data usage down by apps on my phone, telling me how much each individual app is using, so I can determine which one is hogging my data usage.....
So, if anyone knows of such an app, I would really appreciate a link to it!
Thanks!

If you're running JI6 firmware you can long press the home button on your phone to pull up Samsung's task manager (it's in the app folder too). From there you can monitor what apps are running and kill off what's not needed.
What apps do you have installed that may be polling the net? Do you have sync on and polling every hour? Do you run Pandora/Slacker (those eat up a lot of bandwidth)? Any widgets that update news feeds/social status?
I know there's a few apps that monitor overall data usage but I'm not aware of anything that monitors individual apps and tells you what's using the most.
~SB
Thanks SB!
No, unfortunately, Bell hasn't pushed the JI6 firmware update out to its customers yet...I'm still on JH2....
Yeah...I know how to stop apps that way...I was just hoping that I could see which app has been hogging my bandwidth... Oh well...perhaps I have to keep track of what I'm doing & when I'm doing it, and see if that will work....a little archaic, but hopefully that'll work....
Thanks

Maps using battery without opening app

I have not used the maps app at all today, and my usage shows its been used for an hour and a half. Other than Google now, what should be using maps that often?

It's not like that. Just like whatsapp which stays always on to keep you connected, Google maps also stays on even though you don't open it as a system background process although you don't need it. The best way to remove this is to root your phone and uninstall this 'bloatware'

There's no need to delete Google Maps. You just need to regain some control from the app. By default it sends location data to Google. This periodic data 'seepage' also seems to have the affect of 'waking' the phone from deep sleep. Silly, especially since Google wrote the damn OS.
Anyway, this issue has been covered in other threads; you should search, there are more precise instructions out there
...or you can rely on my questionable memory; as I recall-
- Go into Google Maps
- Choose Settings
- Choose Location Settings
- Un-check "Report From This Device"
Also, make sure (on same screen) that Enable Location Sharing is NOT checked and that any of the other location-specific items on the same screen are un-checked.
If you're wondering about 'Location Reporting' under Background Location Reporting, mine is set to 'Detect your location' (thus I think this setting is OK).
Try this out. For me, Gmaps no longer uses data (or wakes the phone) unless I'm explicitly using it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I set it up the way you suggested and I'll see how it works over the next day or so.
You could the free app Greenify as well. Anything that runs in the background without your permission will get shut down by it.

It's desirable (to many) to have at least some background apps able to run/consume data. Yes, you can disable all (or ration out when they're 'allowed' to run, but then you lose out on the full capabilities of the device.
Trust me, having come from Sprint and a GS2, I am well versed in shutting down and restricting apps. What I LOVE about my GS4 is that I can let virtually all apps run (within reason, and w/exception of Gmaps as noted above) and I still have 28-40 hour battery cycles.
Just be wary of 'out of control' apps. Tame them, freeze them, or delete them, but only as a last resort would I disable all background apps.

I agree. Just saying. Those apps that you don't want to run, you can tell Greenify which ones to disallow access. A one stop shop, as it were.

10193 10194 Android

I set a data usage limit in my phone, because I was using a lot of data. After doing it, it alerted me that my mobile data was about to go over and cut off. So scrolled down and discovered these 2 "Android " (looked like the little green Android robot ) and they are named "10193" & "10194" 10194 runs in the foreground all the time and 10193 runs in the background all the time. I was told these are "Kaspersky Mobile Security or Parental Control Monitor" I'm 34yrs old and my parents don't monitor me, please help...

I do not think I did or ever had I looked at all the appsI have installed via play store under the all section of "my apps" and do not see it.
Why do you say it is Kaspersky? My phone has been having some really weird things happening to it. I went though 3 batteries in 2 months, its been using a ton of data. My data just reset on 10/29/13 and it is already at 5gb. Also we have been finding "duplicate processes" running in the application manager. I really don't know what to do, I have installed Avast, Look out, and some other antivirus apps nothing has helped. Reset a few times and it will help it for a little bit and then boom its right back

I recommend wiping completely and start fresh with a new ROM. You could also install an app like Data Manager and see which app is using the most data and uninstall. Also, do not install apps that you download off the internet. Only download from reputable sources like the Play Store and Amazon app store.

this is going to sound crazy, but i just got that phone back up and running in January. But that is what I did,,,
The reason I said Kaspersky is because this guy I know said he "googled " those numbers and symptoms a
and deemed it that. IT did have a spy wear type thing on it but it was not Kaspersky. It was one that was
sent from a website and it has to be removed via the website. I don't remember the name. Anyhow I have
long since ditched that phone and on to bigger and better things. But w/ that phone it has sparked an interest
in this whole "development/modification" thing! Thanks for you help and advice and sorry it took me so long to
get back to you! Be blessed!
Hi Everyone, I know this is a very old thread, but I want to give out a solution because I just encountered this 10194 app as well.
I would like to post this for future reference to other people who will encounter this since I've done searching around about this but I can't find any solution.
To remove this app you must:
1. Open Settings and tap [Security] or [Security and Finger Print] or any other name it might now posses.
2. Under this settings entry, you'll see [Device Administrators], tap that
3. Inside [Device Administrators] you'll see that there is a blank application containing a space as well and the indicator should be ticked, that means this app has administrator access to your phone, it has access to calls, messages, email accounts, etc. See: here
4. Tap this app and [Deactivate] or [De-authorize] it
5. Now go back to the main settings list and navigate to [Apps] or [Applications]
6. Tap the app and you can now uninstall it.
I highly recommend changing your passwords for any account that might have been on that phone, there is a high possibility that this app has gathered information on you.
This includes phone call lists, phone call recordings, your contacts, your messages, notes, emails, etc.
This is a speculation of course and will highly depend on the amount of data this application has passed to wherever it connected to but it is safe to assume that you have been infected by malware and your previous information has been compromised.

[Q] Tethering Guard?

I did perform a search both here and on google so if this has been answered please post a link and I will shut up and say thank you.
I notice when going through my apps and system apps that there is something called a tethering guard. How does this affect my DNA and is it something I should keep or remove?
I am rooted and still have unlimited data and use the WiFi tethering for Root Users app for tethering data. Does this throttle my data? Does my current app become affected or rendered useless should I remove it?
I like to run a very lean rom but do not wish to remove something that would require me to re-install the rom should it affect my ability to tether my data.

I think that is there to monitor and prevent people from tinkering with the Verizon mobile hot spot. I believe that tetheringguard.apk got introduced way back in the day after the free mobile hot spot deal on the Thunderbolt ran out as a way to stop people from using it for free still.
I imagine if you remove it, it kills the native Verizon hotspot functionality, though if you are using wifi tether that doesn't matter...though since it is doing no harm (I think), I'd leave it in case any other system stuff is dependent on it.
Try disabling it, if you see an adverse effect, enable the app again. If you want to be extra safe, make a nandroid you can restore in case something goes wrong

[Q] High Android OS Background Data Usage

Since a few days ago, Android OS has been using an extreme amount of background data. I have never had this issue before. I did some research and found a ton of conflicting things about this supposedly common error. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?
I have tried turning location off, still uses data. I have tried turning sync off, still uses data. I've tried using third party apps to track and see what is causing the problem, no luck.

Yes. I do. Dalvik and cache has been wiped several times already, but I will try it again and see if it works.
I tried wiping cache and dalvik. Didn't do anything. This is ridiculous... My little bitty data allowance disappearing because of a stupid bug...

Have you checked the list of apps below the usage graph in Settings / Data usage?
Be sure to place a check mark in Mobile data in the upper right.
Scroll down the list, tap on each major app & consider limiting its background data usage to wifi with the individualized Restrict background data setting.
You could use an app like Network Log to at least see what Android System is connecting to, might narrow down what's causing the issue.
Yes, I have looked there. I have limited everything I can think of. The problem is, it says Android os is the app using the data and I can't limit that app. And I will install that app and see what I can see.

You can read up on using Better Battery Stats at its excellent xda thread.
This could help especially if the detail on Android OS in Settings / Battery usage shows excessive wake time.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
use a firewall app to block internet access to all the apps except the ones you use
I've tried doing that. I just can't block access to android os.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
This is ridiculous. My tablet never used this much data before. Android OS is the worst, but Google play services are using a lot too.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
It must me something else.
Data usage displayed by each application when summed up don't give even half of global amount used.
Something like:
Google play - 2Mb, Chrome - 5Mb, Android OS - 4Mb, some other apps - 300Kb each, together - 45Mb !!!
Where 20+ Mb has gone - no idea.
There is option to stop background data usage but then phone is almost useless.
BTW:
I don't have any sync to network drive, no FB, no mail or other regular checking.

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.
Hope this helps, Press THANKS if it did help you
Enjoy
