Noob question about OTA updates? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Iam running Alien4 2.3.4 rom with faux1234. Iam rooted and obviously bl is unlocked. But I had a question, I never really understanded the fruit cake thing. I just wanted to make sure I don't brick my phone. So I can flash the 2.3.4 fruitcake, over my current rom, and it would be safe to download the new and future OTA updates over wifi and install it? Thanks

I heard that Google kills a stripper every time someone with a custom ROM attempts to OTA update.

Fruitcake replaces any OTA. Only update software via CWM now. No RSD, no nothing.

[Q] About the OTA 2.3.4

I think i might have been one of the dumb ones to do the .zip flash of the BETA #3 gingerbread update. I searched and noticed the only way to go back to 2.2 was to unlock 1st. the question is when the official moto 2.3.4 comes out will i be able to update to that version without any issues via OTA?
I know some maybe running soak versions which may prevent them from reverting back to 2.2 as well. So do you guys think moto or the devs will figure a way for those that didn't root/unlocked before doing the update.zip to start recieving OTAs?
If ur on kens beta going back to stock will work and stock is the way you'll get the ota until it comes out as an sbf to flash

I'm not on kens. i did the update i believe before kens was available. is there a way to go through kens route since i'm already on the stock 2.3.4?
If you flashed the stock OTA that was leaked, you risk bricking when flashing back.
Moto's OTA is designed to prevent backwards flashing.
I believe they found a way through pudding look on kens roms thread and there should be a link on how ti do so if nit there go to the calling all hardbricks post and do the steps there to prevent bricking

lol dunno
i bought my atrix off of ebay, rooted and unlocked the bootloader, then messed up with gingerblur. maybe it was because i had the lastest updates installed on the atrix?

You were supposed to flash through the system recovery app's recovery, but anyways back to your question. If you follow directions on how to do things im sure you'll be fine off, as of now the only way to hardbrick is to sbf back when you have the ota installed,

Are you sure that your old atrix is hardbricked? Sounds like it would be more of a softbrick unless your old atrix had Gingerbread. Eitherway, it sounds fixable.

Depends, did you take the OTA or did you install a custom rom to get to 2.3.4. If you took the OTA and you weren't rooted before I don't know if you can go back. The HTC unlocker method of rooting will not let you install a kernel so I don't believe you will be able to flash a 2.3.3 rom since it will require an compatible kernel.
If your on 2.3.4 taking the ota then there is no way to go back to 2.3.3

2.3.5 custom recovery flashing?

Is it possible to flash a custom recovery with the locked bootloader? I'm used to HTC and am not to familiar with Motorola's Android

I have already successfully rooted, and attempted to flash CWM recovery from Rom Manager, but I am unable to get to recovery. I tried to unlock the bootloader with RDS Lite flashing derpunlock from the puddin forum, not the 2.3.5, but it failed

Need to use the boot strap recovery, MOTODX_Bootstrap_Signed.apk. Its based off Clockwork. Make sure you only try to flash locked roms though. If you try and flash anything not supported your more than likely going to be on my boat... Softbricked. I was a flashaholic with my Evo, now im a bricked bum looking for light...
Look in Lokifish Mars Sticky on all thing Mopho. It has links to everything you will need in it.
No you cannot flash a custom recovery on a locked bootloader.

not possible for now. I tried it already and it is unsuccessful

I'm in the same boat. I just got a used Photon and it already had the 2.3.5 (45.4.13 254_13) ROM on it. I got it rooted successfully at least, but get the error when trying to install the DERPUNLOCK.SFB file.
Any solutions out there yet? Can the unit be SBF-ed back to 198_7 and then the bootloader unlocked?
(I'm sorry if this is a redundant question, but I haven't found a clear answer and have searched the forums extensively!)
THANKS!

Okay, I successfully flashed bootstrap recovery, what ROMS do I need to look out for and not flash?

Your only real option is mof2.3.5 unless you want to run a rom that is not supported anymore ie imperium, rocko, skinny. Mofs rom is damn good though. Give it a shot and see what you think.
If your on 2.3.4 go with mofo2.3.5ish if your on 2.3.5, don't flash any roms locked or unlocked. Just be happy your phone works!
The reason being is because will the roms are based on 2.3.4 and since 2.3.5 locked bootloader, anything 2.3.4 based will cause you to soft brick, with no sprint sbf to fall back on. Peetr and mo are actively working on a working sbf for those who are on USC electrify sbf.

I'm on 2.3.5, and i really don't care about breaking 4G or anything CDMA... Only need GSM if that's possible...

Signed boot.img with its modules is needed to install after each locked rom.
Don't want to sound like a n00b, but where would those be in the ROM threads? I'm so used to HTC's phones, so going to this Photon makes me feel like I'm starting from scratch...
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app
Actually nowhere yet. You need to wait.
Ohh okay. I'll just sit back and wait for the devs. Really wish I hadn't traded my Evo LTE for this Photon....

Any progress on unlocking the bootloader on the OTA 253_13 build?
Still curious about being able to sbf downgrade to 254_7...
And info GREATLY appreciated.

New update question

So I am running SuperChargedHatka rom and they just updated to the new ota. Ok my question is are we better off flashing back to stock. Relocking. Updating. Then unlocking again? Are there things in the update we can't get with custom roms?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Anyone? Is it more beneficial to go back to stock everything and accept the update then unlock again and install a custom ROM? Or is there no real benefit.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
If you relock, stock, update then unlock and flash a rooted Rom, make sure it has the update in it or you will possibly flash the old rom files over the new..
Sent from my Droid DNA using Tapatalk 2...
You can't get the new radios or hboot just by flashing the ROM. So if you want them then you have to lock, run ruu, update, and unlock again. Kind of a pain but just the way it is right now. If you have the unlock bin you originally got from HTC it does make it a little easier.
Sent from my Droid DNA running ZoneDNA ROM..
Alright cool. That's what I was wondering. Too bad flashgui won't flash radios too
