GS2 with ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all i work at a place that sells Mobile phones, I JUST sold a SG2 from poland, in a sealed box that had Android 4.0.3! pre installed!
It was NOT a custom ROM, and appears to be original from Samsung as my glaaxy Note has a similar rom

Can you go to settings and check the firmware version?

Only a picture of that sales package can prove your point.

If you sold it in a sealed box, how do you know it's running ICS?
Did the customer bring it back or sth?
I would expect this from Sammy, although it does seem a bit sooner than I'd have expected.

Cool story bro, but pics or it didn't happen. In other words...hang on...got a sneeze coming on...*bulllllllllsssssshhhhhiiittttt*
Ahhh. That's better

this is strange since ICS for SGS2 still under development..

I suspect this is just an error on the part of the OP - nothing malicious, just a plain old mistake.

Firstly, if it was sealed, how do you know it had v4.0.3 on it?
Second, ICS is still under development so wouldn't be on any retail devices.
Third, your either chatting sh1t or you are very mistaken!
As stated..
Pictures or it didn't happen!

Sounds fishy to me.

[Q] Why hasnt UK gotten the 2.3.6 update?

Why hasnt UK gotten the 2.3.6 update officially for SGS2? UK got the 2.3.5 update but the unlocked sim-free handsets only got the 2.3.4 update. I have the SGS2 on 3 and didnt get 2.3.6, i had to flash it myself. And will we get an ICS update for UK fast?
Samsung are only on test rom ICE so far .
2.3.6 update may depend upon your carrier and in your case you have to ask 3 .

The whole point of a DROID is customization ditch stock rom's and install CM7 you will never look back and if anything happens to your phone just reflash it with the stock rom. KIES is horrible.

It will be the same answer Samsung produce the firmware its then passed to 3 they decide to accept the firmware or not and modify it or not then post to the Kies server .
If stock 2.3.6 has been released for UK then 3 have it .

I have to say I feel the same I use to change my roms on my desire all the time but never felt the need too on the s2? and today one of the girls in work updates her S2 to 2.3.5 voda branded and my none branded is stuck with 2.3.4, what is that all about??? I benched the 2 side by side today fresh reboot and the voda scored 3600+ on quad and mine only 3200+ not happy with that and TBH I have nothing at all installed on mine!!
HTC never let branded phones get firmware first or is this a play from the carriers now paying to get updates first hmm I wonder.
I did have a look at upgrading to that 2.3.6 rom via odin but still not sure about doing it.
I would just like them all to just get the updates out and stop messing, that is what Android is all about. Just let us do the messing with the phones.

This must be pick on me day then??? I was only telling you what I tried and I know that the benchmark rubbish means nothing but as I said a branded Vodafone showing better results than an unbranded s2, I was a little shocked that's all and I have to say that the voda 2.3.5 did feel very fast and smooth to my stock 2.3.4 that clunks now and again??
Also I would be happy to root and run a custom rom on my s2 I have messed around with phones for years going back to the old Nokia 6600 days and a few before that, also my HTC desire that was changed almost daily, but I feel that the S2 is a solid phone as standard (IMO)

Thats EXACTLY how I feel and exactly what happens to me. I bought a Sim-Free handset from 3 as i had an HTC Desire HD. My SGSII is unbranded and i have no updates. I asked 3 about it and they said I should wait for the updates and theyre doing the best they can blah blah but this is bull****. I got tired and flashed 2.3.6 via Odin. I can help if you need it. I'm quite new to android & smart phones...and before starting to read these boards around a week ago i assumed that the SGS2 was 1 version only all around the globe, exactly the same inside and software... I was a lil surprised to find out that that there's many diff versions, kernals & firmware etc.
Why do they do this ? isn't this just a massive hassle for Samsung etc with all the diff updates they have to work on, test & put out ?
Seems more like "not so smart phones" to me.
Peace

I9100N

Hello,
Does anyone know what are the differences between I9100 and I9100N? I have been looking for information on I9100N but it seems to be sold on very few sites. It's not even listed on Samsung site nor Wikipedia.
Are the ROMs for I9100 compatible with it?
I have bought an I9100G and the site where I bought it from proposed to exchange it with an I9100N, that's why I'd like to know if it would be better to take that second one.
Get the original one or you will regret it. Also the roms won't work with it.

It's very hard to get the original one in France as Samsung France has only been sending the I9100G to resellers, and it doesn't look like they'll be giving the I9100 again.

Rubbish you can get the i9100 or the i9100P in France from these networks and some stores with open sim(simfree)> Only, Orange, SFR.. The i1900P has NFC support ..
Actually it seems that it was just the customer support not knowing what they were talking about, there is no such thing as a I9100N.

I actually thought it meant, "Our original ICS version had at least 1 major bug that we discovered when testing in real-world situations and we aren't going to release it until it is ready for everyone."
Of course, they could have also meant, "At least one of our 'content partners' (who are paying big bucks to get their advertisement disguised as an application inserted into our release) hasn't actually sent in their app yet and we aren't going to release it until it is monefied for everyone."
LOL im so surprised people are surprised by lack of updates from telus/rogers/bell
we may get most phones before the usa, but we pay for it with our carriers holding back updates

throw on one of the highly debloated roms in the dev section based off LE2 leak.
or go one further and put one of the aosp based roms on there and be gone with all the ATT and Samsung bloat

I don't like AOSP ROMs, I was using OnlyOne HYFR B4, and it still has those AT&T things in Wi-Fi settings, and carrier name on the status bar.
Actually they were not big deal but it had some kind of bug, when I try installing an app from APK file, I can click "Cancel" but I can't click "Install".
So, I will be staying on rooted stock Gingerbread ROM with the holoNote kernel and wait for official ICS from TELUS.
Wow that's rediculous.....

Gnex is ICS out of the box.
@JamieD81, we're in the same boat with bricked N7000's. I bought another N7000 with a cracked screen just for the motherboard, since the only place to get N7000's fixed is in Europe. Plus I went thru 3 mainboards on my I9000M. I still buy Sammie's crap, but I'm being a little more careful about flashing roms now. I'm waiting until the official rom is released, and played with enough before I throw my i717 on the line this time.

Edit: S2X ICS was released today ahead of schedule before an ATT or T-Mobile release, so the future is looking friendly (<-- see what I did there)

[Q] Second-hand Bell i9100m to stock

A friend of a friend was giving us a lift today, and she asked if we could turn on navigation on her phone since she was in the middle of driving. Her phone is a Galaxy S II, definitely i9100 and not the other variants (4.3" not 4.5", physical home button). She was running it on Telus but she bought it second-hand a few weeks ago so I assume it was a Bell or Virgin model.
Anyway I could see from afar that it was most definitely still running Gingerbread, and I wondered why it hadn't gotten the ICS update. I asked if I could see the phone and I went to the About screen - it's running 2.3.6, and the build number says Super ROM. Then I looked in her app drawer and saw Superuser. She is not the type who knows how to root a phone or would even want to, so the likely explanation is that the seller had installed a custom ROM and neglected to revert it before sale.
I've never owned an i9100... If she were to ask for help returning it to stock, would the simplest way just be to flash the Bell ICS ROM using Odin? Are there any precautions I'd need to take in case something the last owner had installed would be incompatible with the flash?

To be clear, she is a non power user. The ideal ROM for her is whatever would've been on there by now if it had never been hacked. So I believe that'd be ICS.

and i assume you know where too get that and yes flash in odin the stock version either from here you can get it or samfilmware ics version for 19100m
cheers
Thanks!
Actually I should add... The SuperROM she had on there said the device was i9100G. Is it possible that's just because it's what it says in the ROM, and it's still really an i9100m? Cause now I see they have different processors...

Hey. You better first make sure that the Galaxy S unlock tool isn't there, otherwise that's how the seller sim-unlocked the phone. Putting it on ics may lock it back up but you can unlock it again. If you move it to jellybean though, the unlock tool doesn't work yet. Ics is good enough for her.

Hey I'm also looking to update my phone and I'm sort of in the same situation as this girl. I bought my phone second hand and found out later that it was rooted and has CyanogenMod 7.1 on it. My model is the I9100 and my provider is Telus. I was looking to update it to CM10, but one of my concerns is that it might get locked again and I won't be able to use my phone on Telus. Should I just settle for CM9? Will it for sure get locked again? I'm a noob.

That's not how updates work. Phones don't get updates based upon their contract status or lack thereof, but instead they get updated by their device ID. (Carrier, region, etc..)

Phones get updated not based whether you bought it on credit or full or contract or w/e but based on region, carrier or if you got the developer edition. Most updates MUST go through the carriers and they must approve of it. Is why the First Galaxy line was slow at getting updated. Thank T-Mobile for that
