Difference between Player and WiFi - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I was looking for an Android alternative to the iPod Touch. It looks like Samsung makes the best option. In my research I found a Galaxy S Player and a Galaxy S WiFi both in a 4.0 and 5.0 for screen size. The best I can tell they are the same device but the Player is here in the USA and the WiFi is for Europe and Asia. Is that a correct assumption?
I was just wondering if there is any other differences between the two. It could help in searching for accessories.

I have the wifi and it has a physical home button, the player has a capacitive home button. You have to make sure you use the right rom if you plan to flash it.

I think the Wifi has HDMI output and possibly an antenna. I have the Player and I'm fairly sure it's probably better quality not to mention the capacitive home button is nicer.

The Player is the US version and the S WiFi is the international version. Above posters are right about the capacitive home button on Player and hardware home button on S WiFi.
I have the US version but I'm thinking the International version is better.

I think the Korian version has HDMI and antenna. The International one I have does not have those

I am using the US 5.0 running a custom ROM. Its quality probably is not as good as the korean version, but it is still really nice. Definitely go for the 5.0 It seems to be the most recoverable device compared to others... I have bricked mine more than once... Extremely simple to fix. I got mine for 210.00 US at best buy. I highly recommend this device.

Yes, very different. Note that it has little to no development here on XDA - only the US and International units.

[Q] Samsung tab 10.1 OR Samsung g. Note 10.1?

Hello,
I'm strongly considering getting one of the above, once the second one is available. The fact that the noteay have a stronger processor is a plus.
What should I be looking out for in these devices? What are niggles that would prompt me to check and potentially need to replace if found? Software bugs? Construction quality?
Overall use is going to be internet, everyday calendar, notes etc.
Thanks in advance!

Wait for note. It will probs be lighter and thinner and will defo have a faster processor. Plus it ships with ics. And it has the pen

it is neither lighter nor thinner , but has a faster processor and a pen
If you're price conscious then the original tab is a great buy. Also consider that accessories for the 10.1 Note will be at a premium while a ton of stuff for the original tab are on clearance.
Wait for the note... The pen is surprisingly great (on the note 5.3 anyway), and the faster processor will be a nice upgrade, because the Tegra 2 in the original 10.1 tab isn't great... Very laggy... Yes it's better with cm9, but still not that good.
I have a gt-p7510 Galaxy tab 10.1 and I like it, but if I didn't already have it, I would definitely wait for the note 10.1.
Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciated.
I too hate the lag and on video reviews of the note I thought it was very slow so good thing they are improving the processor.
I always wondered if you could use a stylus on the original tab. What is the upgrade that makes the note souh better with the stylus from the tab?

If you're planning to use it for note-taking, the note 10.1 is an easy choice. For everything else, you'll want to consider whether the faster processor is worth the price difference.
I would also wait on the note, even though it won't be out for a good while. I got the galaxy tab 10.1 a few weeks ago and am loving it so far. But this won't stop me from getting the note 10.1 the moment it becomes available (will have to sell this tab then lol). The biggest thing, for me personally, is the pen; stylus functionality isn't the best thing in the world when it comes to the original tab 10.1 even though it may be functional. But thats all it is, functional, not amazing or practical when it comes to taking notes (student's perspective). Of course the processor bump just makes it sweeter, I'm just hoping the price isn't too steep.
Would the Note have the same touch capability as the Tab if not using the pen? If so, then it was be a great plus!

Yes the stylus isn't required. The touch capability would be the same as the current tab, if anything better (highly unlikely) when it comes to using your fingers. The stylus just adds the extra dimension of certain apps that take advantage of that, such as iAnnotate PDF, Zenbrush, etc. And lets not forget the superb precision the pen will bring when it comes to drawing and taking notes. If Samsung puts in an AMOLED HD screen (Ok I'm seriously asking for too much with this suggestion) this tablet will be beyond perfect, IMO.
If price isn't a concern, I'd say wait for the Note. Why buy last year's model when the new one is right around the corner? The processor bump will probably be enough to justify the price difference, but I'm happy enough with my Tab to sit this round out.
as I have mentioned in other threads my experience with 3g model has not been good, as in Samsung stock experience.
The hardware is good, there is no denying of that of course, and if you can mod it you can get pretty good results (I am happy with the latest ROM I installed, Overcome + pershoot kernel).
Although samsung seems to be delaying ics upgrade in favor of new hardware and in my case in Spain I haven't received a single update to my 3g from stock HC 3.1, and stock is everything but functional after little use, not to mention no launcher hw acceleration so when you have a few icons, dragging them around can be infuriating, of course forget about live wallpapers, screen not refreshing certain elements after a while, reboots, and similar utter failure.
From what I am reading Asus is giving better support and motorola xoom already has ICS.
I even have a college at work who is talking wonders about a chinese tab (Onda?) which is much cheaper and already working with ICS.
I suggest you consider the manufacturer.
So here it is June. Any rumored dates for the Galaxy Note 10.1?
And will that justify a new forum, or will we continue with this one?

I don't have any of those problems with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Dragging icons is fine, live wallpapers work fine, everything refreshes as it should, and I've not had any spontaneous reboots. I'm not rooted and everything seems zippy and smooth. Best tablet I've had so far. I'd like ICS but I'm willing to be patient. I'm sure they have their hands full making sure it's stable and working properly with Touchwiz. Anyone waiting for it through a carrier should be angry with them, not Samsung. The carriers are the ones responsible for pushing the update and most of them drag their feet for some reason.

Untrue. LG and Motorola have been far worse. Again, any carrier locked device is at the mercy of the carrier, not Samsung. Samsung may very well have pushed the ICS update to all the major carriers but they haven't pushed it out to their customers yet. Probably because they want to shove all their own UIs and bloatware on it first.
I would be getting the tab sim free and adding a sim to it later on. I much rather not have a locked device if I can buy it depending on price. So I presume updating wont be an issue.
Still no word from samsung though about the release dates

Recommendation for a SGP 4 replacement?

HI all,
My SGP 4.0 just got stolen. I wonder if there is anything I can do? I did not install any tracking app on it.
Anyway, I really love the SGP 4 as it does everything I need. The only thing I hate is the battery life.
I'd appreciate if you can give me some recommendation for a replacement. Should I get
another SGP 4 or is there something else that is better now? About the similar size
and functionalities as the SGP 4 is what I need.
I just looked on Amazon and SGP 4 is still US$180, same as what I paid 6 months ago.
The SGP 4 (YP-GS1) in Europe is about US $125. Is there a big difference between the two?
Can I use it in US?
I'd really appreciate any help or inputs you can give.
Thank you very much in advance.
-mike-
You probably won't be able to find a replacement for your SGP that has that good of a price. I got mine off of tigerdirect for $150 refurbished, so that's always an option.
The only alternative I would see is an Ipod touch but I wouldn't touch Apple anything with a 50 ft pole.

the 4.2 has a bigger screen but not by much and its also slower, I'm not exactly sure how but most of the reviews prove that it is. Plus the back camera is only 2 mega pixels vs the 4.0 which is 3.2
the 3.6 has a smaller screen and worse screen resolution. not to mention just like the 4.2 it doesn't have as many custom roms/kernels and whatnot that the 4.0 and 5.0 do.
Really the only advantage over the 4.0 with these devices in the battery life, I did about a weeks worth of research on these players before I decided on the 4.0.

While you mentioned it. I have a question: I tried a friend's SGP 5 and some apps couldn't be run
in the background for some reasons? Example is a sleep tracker app that I could start it, then press
the power button to turn it off and it runs in the background until the alarm goes off. But the same app
installed on his SGP 5, during the setting up, the app said that his device doesn't support
power off when the app is running. My SGP 4 was rooted and his wasn't, but I don't think
that makes a difference in this particular case?
Is there anything different in hardware on the SGP 5? Can you set the alarm, then turn off the power
and it wakes up when the time is up)
(put it in standby mode with the screen off, not completely power off by holding the button).
Thanks!

RE: The alarm app.
Are you sure you are not talking about "sleep mode" where apps can run in the background? AFAIK - nothing works in a "Power Off" state, until you power back on and the device reboots, in which case all apps have to be re-started unless they are started automatically.
The power button provides two states depending on how long it is depressed.

[Q] Think I might buy a used 4.0, 4.2 or 5.0

I think I might buy a used Galaxy Player 4.0, 4.2 or 5.0.
I have been looking through the development threads and it looks like the 4.0 and 5.0 have some good very functional ROMS, the 4.2 not so much.
I am a little concerned the 5.0 might be too big for my needs - mostly stick in pocket and listen to audio.
What do you guys that own these devices and have been around here for a while recommend?
I would definitely go for the Galaxy Player 5. It has a flash on the camera, plus it fits decently in most of my pockets and very good battery life.
the only downside to the 5.0 is that it lacks a proximity/light sensor
If you are going to use it for audio than the 4.0 is better for that because it's dac is much better than the one found in the 5.0. However, I'd wait just a bit because Samsung may upgrade these players finally to the galaxy player II series

Thanks. Now I remember reading a while back that the 4.0 has the Wolfson DAC and the 5.0 has the (Not as good) Yamaha DAC.
I had not realized they were coming out with a Galaxy Player 2 series. Although, I still think I will pull the trigger on one of these as I can get a "like new" used or refurb for around $120 to $130. (My present DAP, Cowon Z2 is really annoying me )
I was leaning towards the 4.0. then I was leaning towards the 5.0. I think I am back to getting the 4.0, lol. I will make a decision tonight or in the morning so I can have it in a couple of days ... and Root and Flash!

I ended up ordering the 4.0. It was a difficult decision, I kept eying the 5.0 right up until I pressed the "Buy Now" button, LOL.
I went with the 4.0 mainly because :
Easy and cheap to replace Battery or have a spare. (I feel this is very important especially when buying a used or Refurb player.)
Wolfson DAC (This will be used almost exclusive to listen to Audio (Music, and also podcasts, audiobooks) and most of my previous players had the Wolfson DAC so I am used to the Sound signature)
Smaller size. (This will be used mostly with headphones connected and be in my pocket while I work or perform various activities.)
Light sensor is a plus. Also the camera is unimportant because I always have my phone on me and I usually have my Canon P&S Camera nearby.
I will be replacing my phone sometime this year and it will be 5" or close to it.
Thank you all again for your input!
I was looking through the available ROMS, Looking at the CM 10.1 ROM and the Paranoid Android ROM.
Does anyone recommend one over the other or something else?

Huawei Mediapad X1 7.0 vs Mega 6.3

I bought a Huawei Mediapad X1 recently, (model 7D-501U) so here are my thoughts after a few days in comparison to my Mega 6.3.
1) While the Mega's size is just the right side of the Too Big line for use as a phone, the X1 is just the wrong side. It's too wide to comfortably hold securely in one hand, and it's too big to comfortably fit in my pockets.
2) While having a bigger screen is always good, it's 1920 x 1200 resolution doesn't make high resolution photos or full HD videos any sharper to my eyes than on the Mega's 1280 x 720 screen.
3) The camera on the Mega takes significantly better photos than the X1 despite being a lower resolution (8MP vs 13MP). Photos on the X1 are dark and under-exposed. Using HDR mode helps in some situations, and adjusting exposure and brightness helps in others, but on the Mega you can just snap away in Auto and know that it's going to give a better result first time, every time.
4) The GPS on the X1 can see the same number of satellites as the Mega, but can't use as many of them. It's still useable, but the Mega consistently uses twice as many satellites for significantly better accuracy, (e.g. 10 feet vs 30 feet, or 30 feet vs 70 feet etc)
5) The X1 doesn't have MHL or Miracast for mirroring the screen to your TV. It should work with Chromecast though and I believe you can mirror your screen to Huawei's own MediaQ device, but that's another £100.
6) I find the button placement on the X1 more awkward, with both volume and power buttons on the right hand side. The layout on the Mega works better for me.
7) The X1 has significantly better battery life than the Mega
8) The X1 has a slightly better CPU and graphics than the Mega, which does make a difference in games like Real Racing 3.
9) Although the X1 says it can only use SD cards up to 32GB, it works fine with a 64GB card once you reformat it in the device, so there's no difference there.
So in summary, for me the size, poor camera and weaker GPS rule out the X1 as a replacement for my Mega. It still makes a good 7" tablet though, since the camera and GPS are not important for me in a tablet. I'll keep it for now but it won't replace my Mega, which is still a great device that can do anything.
If you have any questions about the X1, let me know and I'll do my best to answer.
Correction to the above - I believe the X1 does have Miracast, but I couldn't get it to work with Samsung's dongle.
Thanks for your comparison. I tried to grab the version 7d-501l as I read a page saying it's the LTE version and the 501u is 3G version but I couldn't locate a local vender that carry 501l. Can you please confirm if your is 3G version?
Sounds similar to my experience with the Huawei Ascend Mate. Great battery life, nice screen but terrible GPS and camera. Still loving my Mega after 6 months, haven't seen a phone yet that I would prefer. Maybe if they release a 7 inch Mega...

That's correct. 7D-501L is LTE and 7D-501U is UMTS, i.e. 3G. There's also a 7D-503L model that's also LTE, but I'm not sure what the difference is between the 501L and 503L. I suspect it's just a difference between the LTE bands that are covered, but I'm not sure which one covers which LTE bands.
Reason why Mega gets better location lock is because it has GPS and GLONASS

You'll find 3 photos in this folder. One taken with the Mega, default options, full resolution (8 mega pixels). One taken with the X1, default options, 13MP, and one taken with the X1, with exposure, brightness and saturation each adjusted up by 1. I hope that gives you a useful comparison.
I've decided that even though the default settings give rather poor results, with the settings tweaked the X1 does actually take pretty decent photos.

Yes, I'm sure you're correct. I thought it wouldn't be able to see the GLONASS satellites, but I guess it can see them, just not use them.
However after more experimentation, even without GLONASS the GPS accuracy on the X1 is still pretty good (20 feet or better), as long as you've got a good view of the sky.
As you'll see from the above two posts, I've changed my view on the camera and GPS on the X1 - they're both better than I thought, even if I still think the Mega has the edge in both departments. I'm also getting more used to the idea of using it as a phone despite the size although I'm still not keen on the button placement which forces me to hold it lower down the phone than I'd like. So for now I've swapped my SIM cards round and we'll see how I get on with it as my main device.
Also I've ordered a Miracast dongle, so I'll report back to let you know if it works with that.

I can confirm it does support Miracast, although I needed to install WiFi Display Helper to get it to work, since the setting for wireless display mirroring is hidden for some reason. Still doesn't work with the Samsung dongle though.
I'm seriously considering the X1 am I taking too much of a risk on being disappointed? My main worries are they don't have an app drawer in their stock modded os if I added a launcher would I get that functionality back? Does 4G work? (I'm assuming it will work on Straight Talk) Is the battery removable? Thanks for the help.

Lack of an app drawer is no problem - a launcher will indeed give you that.
The battery is non-removable, but the battery life is superb.
I've got the 3G version so I can't help you with your 4G question.
Thanks for the info. Thought of another question for you. How is the Bluetooth? My Mega has this annoying tendency to have the bluetooth cut out briefly and then reconnect with my headset. Thanks again

Bluetooth is fine. It occasionally disconnects and reconnects with my Sony Smartwatch 2, but then the Mega did the same, so I suspect that's the watch rather than the phone. Also my wife's car won't connect to the X1 for some reason, but it works flawlessly with my own car, bluetooth speakers and everything else I've tried.

United States will not be able to us LTE with this phone. With Straight Talk AT&T sim u will get HSPA+ which is marketed as 4G in the US... But it is really known as 3G worldwide. If you have straight talk with Tmo sim...u will be able to use HSPA+ in areas where they refarmed their towers to 1900mhz....unless straight talk has a roaming agreement...which I'm not sure if they do or not.
I have the 503L and using it with ST. Replaced cracked international Note 2 (which has no LTE).. But im happy with HSPA speeds.

Huawei seem to have implemented a car Bluetooth blacklist of some sorts to prevent automatic pairing in cars... Dont know why.
If you are rooted...you may want to edit the file to see if it will connect to your wife's car. Use a file exporer program goto \system \etc \bluetooth... Open file " auto_pair_devlist.conf " ... Remove or comment out # the blacklisted address line.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.
Thanks for the info.
Where are you guys purchasing this from? It doesn't look like Huawei is selling them internationally. I'm in Canada and I'd rather not buy it through AliExpress or one of those shops.

I got mine through Ebay 2nd hand from someone else in the UK, so I doubt if that helps you much.
