Hello everyone from XDA!
I've been reading several different posts on the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100, and though many have been helpful (thank you!), I just can't seem to find the solution I'm looking for.
Not long ago I upgraded the stock firmware from Bell Canada (forget the specs) to:
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: I9100XXKI4
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWJK3-CL647431 [email protected] #2
Build number:: GINGERBREAD.XWKJ3
My phone was also rooted.
Recently, however, I've been trying to upgrade to ICS but without success---and I've tried a number of ways, from the XDA forum to various websites around. I suspect the problem may be with my computer (USB related) and not the phone. I'm not sure, I'm not an expert, which is why I come to you for help, please.
The first and only attempt of ever upgrading the firmware (see above) was a success; as per directions, I used Odin: the PIT, PDA, PHONE, and perhaps CSC as well. It has been some time since the ugrade, and in the mix of trying new and different firmware (without success) I have forgotten exactly what happened.
So my problem, now, is that any time I try to upgrade to ICS (or another firmware for that matter) my computer ends up crashing when the flashing of the phone reaches the "boot.ini" stage. My computer (Windows XP Professional) crashes and a blue screen appears with an error---something to do with USB.
I just can't seem up update my phone.
The phone still works perfectly fine, but I really want ICS. I have tried with and without Kies installed. In fact, Kies even allows me to upgrade to a newer version (though it's not ICS) than I currently have. Unfortunately, though, when I try upgrading via Kies, I am also unsuccessful.
Could this just be my computer's USB? The drivers? If you have had similar experience and know the answer please help!

This screams to me it's the computer.
Have you tried on a different one?

I agree it sounds like a problem with your PC. You can bypass that problem by using Mobile Odin.
As ctomgee says, a blue screen error indicates a problem with your computer, not phone.
The way you are trying to get ICS also seems strange, the current way to get it would be:
Root phone and install CWM using Chainfire kernel.
Download and put the ICS rom on your sd card.
Boot into CWM, wipe everything and install the rom.
Reboot and you have ICS.
What file were you trying to use to upgrade to ICS?
Thanks
@ ctomgee: I've considered using a friends computer but I'm worried about damaging their computer by having an error appear.
@ oinkylicious: Thanks, I never knew about mobile Odin. I'll check it out.
@Kaze105: I appreciate the steps, thank you. The new firmware is GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XXLPB_I9100XXLPB_I9100XEUKH2.tar.md5 and Kernel_I9100XXLPB.tar.md5, respectively.
If any of you have links or suggestions as to favorite roms, kernels, or the like, well I'm open to suggestions!

Can't hit the target if you don't take the shot...
I'm having a similar problem.
I decided to root my galaxy s2 with the CF-kernel (so this is my initial flash, and mobile odin is no alternative).
But every time I start (in Odin), my computer crashes.
I tried it on a "native" Windows XP x86 system and in a virtual machine with Windows XP x86(because I am using Linux only).
On my second machine with Windows 7 64bit, I cannot install the device drivers correctly (the CDC component fails to install), so Odin (and Kies as well) does not recognize the Device.
Is there any suggestion or alternative to Odin especially for Linux systems?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: enabling USB 2.0 for the virtual machine and reinstalling the USB-drivers did the trick (the native windows system has no USB 2.0). Now it hangs on connectionsetup, but that's another problem.

Is it just me or is Kies the absolute worst phone connectivity software in existence?
I have been trying to do the firmware updates via Kies since they were released but keep getting the same error message (DLL Load Fail). I have tried the update on 2 PCs - 1 running Vista and the other running XP. I don't have access to a Windows 7 PC to try it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the SGS2 and apart from the occasional random reboot, I don't have any complaints. I would just like to be able to apply the firmware updates!
I've read a few solutions on another thread about using Odin, but I'm new to Samsung phones and a bit wary about Odin. Though I did a lot of rooting and custom ROM installs on my old HTC Desire so I'm no stranger to messing about with android hardware via unofficial means...I just don't want to be unofficially messing too much with my SGS2 since it's less than 3 weeks old.
Does anyone have a non-Odin solution to the crappy Kies DLL Load Fail problem?
NOTE TO ADMINS: Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place, please feel free to move it if necessary.
I had the same problem (DLL Load Failure after firmware download) on two of my computers (Windows 7 SP1 x64) as well. After a few tries (including computer restarts and Kies reinstallation), the problem spontaneously went away - without any preceding configuration change I can remember.
If you continue to have firmware update problems and don't want to resort to ODIN you could try if a firmware update via Kies Wi-Fi (Home Screen -> Settings -> Wireless and network -> Kies via Wi-Fi) is possible.
In general, I do agree - Kies is the worst. It is really puzzling why Samsung Android phones can't just update via cell network/wifi like HTC devices (or even the Samsung Nexus S).

The answer is ODIN.
Seriously, just read it, read the SGS 1 forums etc... ODIN is what samsung use internally
I know this does not help you, but really, ODIN in 100 times more reliable and safer than Kies to update firmware. There are picture guides available right here on XDA.
also try running Kies update when you are freshly booted the phone in Airplane mode. Do not kill any tasks by ATK or in built Ram cleaner. Just boot > airplane mode> plug in and give it a try.
I have windows 7 and KIES is just soo slow, not tried updating firmware as have no issues with phone
(and not sure what improvements are included)
I have 2 computers and can only do certain things with either. One runs 7 64bit the other 7 32bit. One will work with Kies perfectly fine, and will run ODIN as well, but ADB is a complete no go.
The other will do ADB and Kies via Wifi, but nothing else.
Driver installation is the problem. One machine refuses to find drivers for SAMSUNG_Android and CDC_serial.
Works perfect for Me every time :-\. But odin works great too so to prevent any issues its prob best to use odin especially with all good support from xda

Absolutely agree it's shocking !
I have given up with Kies, but Odin is not working for me either!!!
It all seems to flash ok according mto Odin log, phone reboots, and then check the phone status and it's still at KDD firmware level ...
Any ideas what's wrong with Odin anyone?!

Lol this is exactly what I mean. People never doubt their devices. Oh kies doesn't work for me. There must be something wrong with Samsung and their crappy software. Oh no odin doesn't work either there must be something wrong woth odin too now. Kies and Odin work fine stop saying they don't. If it doesn't work the problem is on your end. How many freakin times... and I'm the one who is the troll here
Swyped from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
worst?....
its not great but itunes holds that crown by a country margin, had you forgotten about that?
er...
I never said Odin doesnt work, i was posting to try and get some useful tips on what i might be doing wrong rather than to receive mindless abuse.
And i am certainly not the only one with the Kies failure messages that seem to be rife.
Thanks for not even helping suggest what COULD be wrong on my side, which is exactly what i'm trying to find out. Troll
i need help, i have tried everywhere and can't find anything and any help would be greatly appreciated
i'm on the road to root my samsung galaxy fascinate and have ran into a laundry list of problems. i have rooted many android phones coming from eclair, froyo, and gingerbread, but seem to be stuck at the slightest of problems when it comes to the fascinate.
i can not install the drivers to the fascinate. i have searched through the web for all the drivers and have tried every possible galaxy driver. the driver simply won't install on my windows 7 prof 64bit machine. i have never ran into this problem before with any other phone. every time i try to install the driver it gets to the very end of the install then pops up with the message "windows was unable to install the driver"
It also gave me the option to view the failed windows installation log, which after many successful steps, at the end the log shows this error:
Action ended 1:26:53: ShowMsiLog. Return value 0.
=== Logging stopped: 12/16/2011 1:26:53 ===

i have also attached the entire log
the first thing i did was plug in the phone, which windows sensed this and automatically installed a driver, not sure which. after this i unplugged the phone and then checked "usb debugging" for rooting purposes and plugged the phone back into the computer which windows then installed another driver automatically, then following the steps from xda to root the phone, i downloaded the given drivers which is where the problem first occurred and the drivers were unable to download.
I'm simply trying to get root access to the phone and can't do anything with the phone with crappy drivers...i can't even mount usb sd card now to transfer data anymore. the drivers have completely been shot. i desperately need help. please
also what is the absolute easiest way to root the fascinate? is it with one click root or with Odin? Because the fascinate just updated itself from 2.2.2 EH05 to 2.3.5 EH03 and i'm not sure which program supports rooting which version of android. also all other android devices simply give root access to the stock rom, which is great cause i get to keep all my apps, messages, contacts...etc, then simply titanium backup everything and transfer it over to the new rom. is it different with the fascinate? will rooting the device simply flash a completely new rooted rom? therefore loosing everything? if anybody has any answers to any of these questions, please be my hero. thanks
Uninstall everything you previously installed in the way of Samsung drivers (in fact, you could use Windows 7 backup and restore to restore your PC to the state it was in the day before you installed the drivers as they are sometimes hard to uninstall completely). Reboot and simply plug your phone (with USB debugging of course), and let Windows automatically install the drivers for you like it did before you installed the ones linked to on XDA. This time, if your PC recognizes your phone, just keep the drivers you have and don't install the ones linked to. Those drivers from the guide are for those whose PC doesn't automatically install working drivers. From that point, just follow the rest of the guide and skip the install drivers part. You will not have to install any further drivers unless you flash an AOSP ROM, in which case you'll have to follow the instructions in the OP of the ROM thread. I hope this works for you.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
awesome thank you, i will try this out, and if this doesnt work i can always try another pc.
and as to the question of rooting the fascinate, like i said before i've never had a phone that has been wiped when i got root access initially, but it seems that everyone is saying that a rooted rom must be flashed from Odin in order to have root access. In other builds it seem that all is done is busybox and superuser are just pushed to the phone. will the fascinate be wiped when initial root is acquired?

root is not flashed via odin, rather cwm is...then the root file su_2.6.3.1 is flashed via cwm. If you need directions section 5 of my guide in general section has it covered...everything needed is there including the correct recovery and root file.
I will tell you what...the Fascinate is probably the biggest pain in the ass phone...I tried forever to root my friends and couldn't get it done...need to try again I guess, but it was a driver issue as well..ODIN just wouldn't recognize the dam phone
Use Droidstyles guide. Very easy to follow. Also, the USB cable for some reason seams to be a bit finicky at times with this device. Unplug from phone and replug. Sounds odd but trust me, I have done this many times.

I am having a problem too and it's not covered anywhere i've seen to date. I've got an XP and a Win7 box at home. On both, I've tried with no drivers and i've tried with every other driver set I can find and every time I hook the phone up to the machine it pops up saying USB device couldn't be recognized or something. I'm going nuts! I've never had so much difficulty in my life, not even the first time changing ROMs on anything.
Droidstyle- I've seen your guide and unless I missed it doesn't cover this. Have you seen or heard of this and have any ideas at all?
Thanks!

Checking a few videos on youtube I got the Idea and recommended files youtube(dot)com / watch?v=bz9gw-ZRbY4

I have tried downloading drivers and changing USB ports + the cable is brand new. When ever the mobile device isn't in download mode it is recognized and I am able to transfer and review files that are on my phone.
So here I'm looking for help at you guys. How do I fix this issue and do I have the right video to follow?
Please, keep in mind I'm a Novice (I don't understand many terms and abbreviations).

So as you said I checked the thread it was not new to me. I have the drivers already, but I just installed them again and still there is no connection in download mode. As I said, if the device is not in download mode I can do what ever I want, but once it enters the download mode ... poof (like there is nothing connected to the PC). I had all the others steps completed too, but yet it doesn't work. When I change the USB port windows says "Failed to install" - Gadget Serial.
I had Kies air connected once and in my PC processes there is no Kies of any kind. Even before I enter the download mode I used App Killer to shut down all apps at least for a moment.
Right now My phone is in download mode and this is the status:
ODIN MODE
Product name: GT-i9100
Custom binary download: YES (1 counts)
Current Binary: Custom
And this is its state every time when it's in download mode.
I had a similar problem but when i wanted to flash it said failed to install or something like that in odin, but then i just changed my USB port to other one and it worked, so i think that the USB i was using was getting impulses of electrisity and turned of at a time so the odin couldn't connect to a phone so he just gave an error (correct me if im wrong).
So for your problem i think you should delete the previous drivers you installed and every driver you installed for your phone and don't delete anything else just your phone drivers. Here: Uninstall Guide
or Here:Uninstall Guide
After the uninstall reboot your PC and install drivers from here, and look for your bit version of your windows (32bit, 64bit) Drivers For windows
And the reboot again, then try and report back here.
Hope it helps!
Cheers

Thank you for your help, but I just realised that I am not running Kies on my PC. I installed Kies and here we go! The phone was recognized in download mode
Hello everyone, I could not find a good title for my issue but I will try to explain as well as I can. I own a GT-I9300 (International), but since last official Samsung's firmware update(Jelly Bean 4.3) I am not able to get my phone recognized by my computer. Phone is connected and it charges, but neither Windows or Ubuntu recognizes it as a portable device. I am concerned about UMS is not available on device, but my phone it does not even get detected! I also own a Galaxy SII (4.1.2) and it does get detected by my PC. I think that flashing a custom ROM could solve the problem, since it appeared when I updated official firmware, but the thing is that I cannot root my phone! Tried ODIN but since my phone does not get detected, ODIN does not do its job. I also tried rooting with framaroot and towelroot, but no success: first one says "Failed , try another exploit" but there is only one. And the last one says my phone is not currently supported, even if I change modstrings.
So here is my question: how do I root my phone? I don't know what else I could try. I have already reinstalled Kies and Samsung USB drivers but still not working. Also hard-resetted but no luck.
Hope you guys can help me out because this is really getting on my nerves
Thanks in advance!

The thing is that my phone is the only one that do not get detected every single time I connect it. I have already connected one GT-I9100 and GT-S6790L and both get detected. I already tried on 3 different Virtual Machines with Windows XP, Ubuntu, Windows 8.1 but no luck.
As I said in the first post, I think it's a firmware problem since it appeared when I did the official update, which was this one:

I can see your frustration Now a few things technically it is a misconception that you need root to flash a custom rom you can actually flash a custom recovery with Odin full wipe and then flash a custom rom from custom recovery (only thing is you will lose all your data because you need root to back up your data)
Now I know the above statement is not very helpful because as you said Odin doesn't detect it (but I thought I would mention it anyway )
The reason framaroot and towelroot, didn't work is because at the moment the only way to root S3 is with Odin.:crying:
You may have tried this but I will mention it anyway first uninstal Kies and all Samsung drivers from your computer ( kies can interfere with Odin) Then try installing these drivers here >> http://developer.samsung.com/techni...Lhp1GqlWRy92Q60CX6PP1mF!80806326?v=T000000117 << If you have tried this then sorry.
Also when you connect the phone go to Device manager in Windows and try to look for your device ( it may say unkown device) it should have a warning triangle right click on it select update driver software and then select browse from my computer and point to the drivers that you have downloaded see if that works.
Another thing to note is if you are using Windows 8 you need to disable Driver signature in start up options ( Google it) for Windows to recognize the drivers.

I already tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers. Also I tried looking for device on Device Manager but it does not appear when I plugin my S3, but it does appear when I connect other devices like S2 or Galaxy Fame Lite. They appear as portable devices.
I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and have already tried with different OS over Virtual Machines and still doesn't work.
And thanks for that note, didn't know there was possible to flash a Custom Recovery without root, but I can't since ODIN doesn't detect device :crying:
Then it looks like you are running out of options I would use another computer not Virtual Machines
Okay I'll give it a try but as I said before, looks like an firmware issue, not computer's. Why would my computer detects two another Samsung devices but not mine (which used to work until last update)
Me, too!
I'm having a similar problem. Last week my GS3 stopped working, and I bought another one from Ebay with a cracked screen and swapped out motherboards. The phone seems to work as well as a stock Verizon phone on Jellybean would, but I can't get my Linux, Win 8, or Win XP computers to even recognize that it's attached. Different cables, each and every one of the USB ports, not even a blip. Device Manager in Windows doesn't even see it, and yes I got the developer options unlocked and have enabled USB debugging.
I've got the Samsung drivers installed, and tried to install the CWM device drivers from the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V9, but there was an error and that didn't work, either.
USB connection issues are usually due to Windows conflicts, driver problems or the lead itself. If all these have been excluded then you have either a firmware issue in the bootloader, which is very uncommon, or a hardware problem. The usb port is easily worn/damaged/dirty also the motherboard might be the cause.
There is no silver bullet to cure, test each possible thoroughly.

The usb port is easily worn/damaged/dirty also the motherboard might be the cause.
There is no silver bullet to cure, test each possible thoroughly.

I'm 100 percent sure that it is not due a Windows issue, I have already test every option. I have not considered the usb port to be damaged or worn, which could be possible but phone charges every time I connect it to computer. It just does not get detected as a device. But in order to assume it is a motherboard issue I will have to put away my feeling that the problem is caused by last OTA official update, since this problem started there.
If it is a firmware update issue, is it any option to flash another ROM?

As I said on previous posts, I have already installed and reinstalled Samsung USB drivers and made a factory reset -one from config. option and another one from Android stock recovery 3e (since I cannot install any advanced recovery -or even root it- to flash a custom rom). Doing those factory reset did not downgrade my last firmware update (when all my problems started).
I also said on previous posts that I tried towelroot and framaroot with no success. As tallman43 says, seems like international version of S3 does not support those kind of one-click to root apps.
-----------------------------------------------------
So far the only options available (if my theory about latest firmware update is the problematic one) are:
● downgrade firmware: [Q] How? Odin is not working since my phone does not get detected;
● root my phone in order to install an advanced recovery and flash a new ROM: [Q] Any way of rooting phone without computer (apart from towelroot or framaroot because I have tried and do not work for me)? I read one XDA post from 2 years ago to root S3 via console apk but latest comments assumes that method stopped working.
● install an advanced recovery without odin or root: [Q] How?
● fix USB firmware issue: [Q] I have completely no idea how to do it. (Already played with *#7284# and *#0808# but did not get my phone detected)
Please I need help, this is really irritating me and I am running out of ideas

I guess I have found out what the problem was. It was not firmware (as I thought). It was the micro USB port (as boomboomer said) which seems to not be firmly attached to the PCB. AC charging just seems to work okay, but not USB connections. I managed to figure it out by forcing the USB in a specific position to get it detected for 5 seconds, but then it disappeared.
Yeah, it was not as complex as I thought! I will try to replace that micro USB port as soon as possible, thanks everyone for your help!

Aren't you just missing some drivers? Maybe try to reinstall them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
Also make sure to allow drivers to interact with your device if anything prompts while in Odin.
Android Debugging activated?

1. yes i have already installed drivers and phone is detecting via KIES and ODIN when it is turned on.. it suddenly disconnect whenever i put into download mode.
2. yep usb debugging is activated...
3. Im using 4.3 stock rom.. arent there any other way to root this device without pc .. coz i checked lot of forums but none helped me..
4. my pc - windows 10. but i dont think that it will be a issue coz it's detected when it's turned on (means not using download mode).

Relax.. I understand how frustrating it can be.
I need a detail explanation of what you did to get it into that state and what you've tried. A bullet point list will suffice. I just need to know so I can work out how buggered it is and where to go from here.
I need to know which PC operating system you're using, which variant of s3 you have including its region (this can be determined by the sticker in the battery compartment unless you already know.
There is a possibility it is your os not detecting the device because of drivers but if you've tried formatting and starting over then it shouldn't have any issues. The only other option is to manually edit the drivers ".cat" file with the s3's actual physical address before installing the drivers, but this is in extreme circumstances when the os is not "playing ball".
Also remove kies or at least stop all of its running processes when using odin.
My advice at this stage is to manually remove all drivers from the pc OS regarding the s3 and wait until we figure out where the s3 is at. I have a gdrive with some useful stuff that I know works on Windows XP flawlessly. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4vTiHTBB629ZW5vQndpbjFnblk
One question though.. When you pull the battery out and reinsert it. Does the phone automatically boot to download mode, is it stuck there permanently or does it boot loop?.

1st of all I want to thank you bro for reply...
Now..
I am using Windows 10 64bit, using Samsung galaxy sIII GT-I9300 Indian single sim varient.
I rooted it using KingoRoot successfully but I found I wasn't able to get SuperSU and without that I was not able to use root fun properly so I tried to flash the same with flashFire.. it failed as it require SuperSU. So I tried installing TWRP recovery from playstore and it started flashing and after reboot, It stuck on the Downloading mode.. No matter how many buttons I tried pushing combined it stuck on downloading mode...
I tried almost all method on YouTube and websites but it still don't work. Worst thing .. I tried fixing the same by Kies as well as ODIN but .. I never detect my phone.. when i connect my phone after uninstalling and Or installing the samsung driver and Kies as well.. windows didn't recognise it.
I am about to give up n this and almost ready to smash the phone with wall hammer and throw it under my car tyres but I committed myself not to do that before 14th May.
The problem is most likely Windows 10 64bit. I'm quite sure the drivers don't agree with them.
You're going to have to find an older OS and try it. Either use a virtual machine or dual boot and load up a real OS like XP. Then we can begin the proper problem solving. I hate putting percentages on things but I'm 90% confident that windows 10 is an issue here, mainly for the fact it is 64bit and the drivers aren't made for that.
As for button combo's if they don't work while booting and it goes straight to download mode then there is a big problem and it could be bricked. You can try holding just the power button for about 15 seconds while in download mode and it "should" attempt to reboot. If not then as I said, big issue ahead.
No matter what you need to get it seen by odin so get yourself xp somehow and use the stuff on my gdrive. You need to get yourself a copy of the latest firmware for your phone, ready to flash via odin should you get it to see the phone.

If you can afford to have them look at it then it's up to you but you will be billed for it as the s3 is out of warranty. They haven't made the s3 for about 3 years now.
