AT&T is screwing us again! There doubling the upgrade fee this Sunday from $18 to $36!! It's changing a week before the galaxy note is being released. Thanks again AT&T!

I've been off all week, but this will be an interesting change to go back to work with on Monday. I just saw it on Engadget...
Well one thing I will say is preorder the Galaxy Note before sunday, the upgrade is processed immediately thus your fee with only be $18 if you upgrade today or tomorrow before the change on Sunday. This applies to at&t upgrades only, I am not sure how third party upgrades process such as Best Buy, etc...
- Dan
I went into the store and preordered mine and they told me that I made it just before the upgrade fee increase. Then they waived it.
I reserved my note @ Best Buy. They have not charged the upgrade fee, so well see. I'm sure AT&T will waive it, though. They are usually good about stuff like that...

This upgrade fee should only apply if you order directly from at&t in some manner?
But if you order from 3rd party group like Amazon, Costco, etc.... we should be safe from this bs?

I believe you are still charged the upgrade fee. You just don't see it because it appears on your next bill.
Tell me if I'm wrong though.
Some 3rd party retailer can wavie the upgrade fee but usually they will say so up front. AT&T still charges the fee but those retailers give you money back.
My Perimer account has been showing up with $36 upgrade fee for a year now. And also consistently shows new phone releases $100 more than non-primer acccounts or stores.
So, AT&T is simply leveling the field for all customers. Sooner or later, your new phone will be $100 more (so GS2 will be $299 and Note will be $399) as well if this trend continues.
AT&T will always try to nickel and dime you with some ridiculous charges. You just have to know how to call and complain about the charges and they will drop it for you. Every time they tried to charge me those ridiculous fees I called and complained and got it waved.

Agreed. It is like this with Comcast, too. If you have shown loyalty as a long time customer and tell them you are dissatisfied, charges like this are easily negotiable.
I used to be a long time loyal customer . . . had a corporate account over 10 years old predating the cingular merger. Then I went and got married. Trying to get the frickers to add my wife to my account was like I was like talking to a brick wall... it took three days of being on the phone over eight hours (that's 24 hours total, mind you, not 8 hours spread over three days) and the only solution they ever found was to cancel my current account and create a new one from scrap. So now I'm only a 2 year customer instead of a 10+ year corporate customer. Grrrrr.

Yes Comcast Is exactly like that. I have had Adelphia cable and Comcast tool them over years ago. They jacked up the prices around two years ago. My dad called and complained. Said he would was going to Go to direct tv. They gave us an he upgrade, free DVR upgrade, top of the line Internet, free phone, and another he box for 1/2 the price per month. With that all added to our other stuff we only pay around $150 a month.
AT&T on the hand has never done anything like that for us. We have been with them when they were still Cingular. In fact my mom just get her Cingular sim card replaced with her 3G one fort her iPhone. They don't do crap for us. We pay close to $300 a month (and this month more that $300, do the new fee) and it continually rises because of these new data plans. I was in the market for a new network this time around, but they all suck. I have never been throttled, never went over my limit, my mom pays for the 2gb data plans on all of our accounts, and combined we use about 2.7gb per month. (thats 1.5 for me, 1.1 for my sister and .1 for my mom.)
My only other option was Verizon and the galaxy nexus but I chose the note and AT&T.
I hope I don't have to regret it.

Upgrade fee is something that ATT CSR can easily remove for you. You just have to call and be friendly with them. I haven't yet to have any issue convincing them that upgrade fee is unreasonable (knock on wood). So the least you can try is reduce it to $18 if you get charged $36 by telling CSR that you preordered before the price increase date. I would first try to get the whole thing removed via 611.

Most of these would be orders cancelled within the past 3 months or returned, so condition can't be that bad. I want to say a majority would be those returned by people who wanted the SkyRocket, so yeah, good stuff.
Thanks for the heads up. Think i'll get a couple for my kids.

refurbs only have 90-day warranty. So, be prepared. You are in it for 2-year contract. If it broke at day 91, you are SOL.

I was trying to buy one of these for $0.01 on Friday but ended up getting it for $9.99.
I was having trouble completing the process because there was no option for unlimited data plan, this was around 745pm. After speaking with someone over the phone on ATT they said that they made notes on my profile and to go ahead and but it under the 4GB data plan and they would change it back to unlimited before I activated the GSII. So I proceeded to do so but I noticed that the price had changed to $9.99. Im assuming the change happened at 8pm my time (EST) but not sure why they would do this on a weekend, oh well no penny phone for me but 10 bucks isn't so bad either.
I got one for $99 from radioshack with full warranty. Still a good deal for this phone.
I rather pay 99 at Radioshack then free refurb.

most likely nothing to worry about. And if you do have a problem with it, you'll most likely come across the problem fairly quickly so warranty is not usually a problem.

________
Long story short, AT&T messed up their tax charge calculation... how can EST. TAX be $48.12???? Called a sales Rep only to be flogged off to call back later when the phone arrives with the billing note to confirm the charges and seek a credit.
-10 for AT&T Customer services! As unhelpful as always.
I believe that they charge tax based upon the full retail price.

I picked up on this deal last week and just got mine today. BEAUTIFUL phone. The transition from my iPhone 4 doesn't seem to even be an issue at this point. (I've had Android before so I'm fairly familiar...well, really familiar, with it so that might help). I figured 90 days is okay and mine line has insurance so that helps extend it as well correct? I'm content. Love it.
So my Tmobile bill has been $150 ever since I bought it back in Aug 2011. When I signed the contract they told me it would be $70 per month, + $15 starting in Oct, and + $25 incl my wireless broadband. That totals $110, and somehow, they have managed to tack on an additional $40 EVERY MONTH since I bought the damn thing! Not one month since I bought the phone has my bill even been close to $110. So last month, again, I called at payment time, and they said there was a $10 charge on my account because they added a feature to my phone monthly, that I did not ask for. They removed it and said they would credit toward my account on my next bill.
So heres the thing, this month I hear about this prepaid $50 per month plan! Thats all I have to pay and I get unlimited-- everything is the same! To get that plan though I have to pay $200 to get out of my current contract, and STILL pay my $50 for the first month!
So after I have been practically robbed ever since I joined Tmobile, now they want me to pay $250 for a plan that they should have offered me in the very beginning!
Is there any loop holes here that I can get out of this contract and switch plans without paying $200??? Your answers are very much appreciated, my bill is due 2 days from now.

I don't understand. What do you mean "threaten to cancel"? I actually have told them I was going to cancel for previous issues. I spoke to a manager and she was very rude to me, and told me "fine cancel that will cost you $200". Also what is BBB?

BBB= the Better Business Bureau
Keep in mind that if you signed up for the $50 plan initially, you would have paid a lot more for the phone. The pre-paids and value plans don't provide a phone subsidy.
You should be able to switch to a number of different plans of the "classic " type without paying a fee, but not the value or pre-paid type.
But there does seem to be something odd going on. I can honestly say that I've never had any problem or even rudeness from a T-Mo rep. Although I understand things changed somewhat during the ATT debacle.

Find out the lemon law for cell phones in your state. In Illinois, if we do 3 or more exchanges on our cell phones, we can break the contract for free and legally.
http://www.cellular-news.com/story/23444.php
The Illinois House has passed a "cellphone lemon law" which would enable consumers to break their contract without financial penalty, if their handset develops a fault on three or more occasions.
I had replaced my Amaze about 5 times within 3 weeks because of blue lines in my LCD. You can just tell them you have blue lines in it over and over until you get a third or fourth replacement, then threaten to break your contract and you won't have to pay an ETF (Cancellation Fee)
This is my 2nd replacement. I had to get a new MyTouch 4G, and then they replaced that with the Amaze. That only counts as 2?

Okay, let's start with the not being close to $110... Have you been dinged for roaming on AT&T's network perhaps? And did you factor in state sales tax? And those unwanted features, yeah. That's them screwing you.
But the moving down to the lower 50/month price plan? That's a rate for people that have bought their phone outright instead of getting the $300 or so subsidy on the device in exchange for 2 years service. Honestly, while I hate contracts, I think they have every right to charge you 200 bucks to recoup the cost of the subsidy. You can cancel your extra features to drop down to 70 a month. But that's the minimum eligible rate you agreed to for the subsidy that you received when purchasing your device.

Ok, heres how it went down at the sale. I went into Tmobile as a new customer. At that time they told me only the prepaid plan of $50 was available to customers who had been on the plan for already a full 2 year contract. $70 I thought no biggie, and then tack on a $25 charge per month for my Internet, and then $15 after that for the phone. Cool I can deal with that. My first bill $150, oh well we had to pay to start your plan. My 2nd bill, Oh we had to charge you for this fee (I dont remember anymore). Literally every month I have called to complain and it was always a new excuse. A couple months was legitimate because I ordered an $8 battery, and it was another $5 for something else that same month. But that was only one out of 6 months. And every month seems to be something new. Last month was the first month they said "well we added this $10 feature. It sends you news updates, and blablabla.." Wtf, I never ordered that. They removed it. I never was asked and they still charged me $150 last month.
Yeah they were very very rude to me. I called because I had a very important text message that would not switch from the old MyTouch to the new MyTouch. And this text message was incriminating evidence on someone who had robbed me. I called maybe 2x previously I think and they were not able to help me. I went into the Tmobile store on 2 separate occasions and they were not able to help me. I wanted to talk to a manager to get better assistence because this just wasnt making sense. I heard I could transfer my text messages, all the other text messages, but this text message which turned out to be an MMS, would not transfer!
She told me they had tried to help me, and there was nothing she could do, and she didnt even let me reply before she said have a nice day. (How the conversation went exactly I dont remember) but it was rude. I called the Tmobile Corp office and she said the same thing and said there was no one she could transfer me to, and basically hung up on me.
Literally all I needed to do was send the text messages to my Gmail account. All the messages sent. I sent in my old phone. It was that easy. She wouldnt give me the time of day and that was really a point to me that discouraged me from liking them. Besides the $40 over charge per month, besides I had trouble with their phones from the very first month I had one, besides I would be on the phone with customer service we would get disconnected and they didnt call me back, having to wait on hold again, once over an hour on hold.
So I really hated tmobile for while, but with the $50 prepaid plan I will just take it. I was going to switch though as soon as I could if my $150 was not going to stop. $40 doesnt seem like alot but when you are counting on that money every month, that seriously is just about half my groceries for the month if not all of it for some. I never crossed with any AT&T coverage. That was never an issue.
If you want, PM me your # and I will call you from work and go over everything on your plan and either explain or fix it.
BTW the $60 prepaid is the equivalent plan to yours, not the $50
What I am not getting is where you say you have a $70 plan and $25 for web, is that a hotspot? web for your phone?
Just PM me, Im not rude

Premiere Business Acct
The goal here is to NOT have agents run around looking for answers on how to go about. YOUR CHANCES ARE 10X BETTER if you request nicely to even accept a credit on your acct for a $150.00
Reason Being; Agents mostly have the power to do that instanty.
Also marks an easy, instant customer satisfaction score call.
STEER them to ATG&T.com
Let them know the phone is offerred for 50% off. Its tyhe first phone featured clearly on the sales page.
You will get a run around. I was transferred about 4x.
Until one agent said no prob.
Good Luck!
Where is the link to this page?
Did you call Premier or Business Care (611)?
Yes ..I contacted Premeir as they are the ones who ordered the phone for me.
Throw that option out foremost when speaking to an agent; about credit your bill.

I just did the same, my upgrade was pre ordered through Premier online on 2/5/12.
Called 611, told them about my recent purchase and obvious disappointment in the rapid price drop of my new device - and that I'd like a credit to reflect the difference. They asked what I paid, how much it's selling for on AT&T.com and proceeded to issue a "one time only exception" credit to my account. Done deal, had to be on silent hold for a bit and the CSR confirmed the credit was applied to my account...$155 positive credit on my account since they were nice enough to credit me the tax =P
All worth it for a $150 Galaxy Note!
This does not apply to upgrades they said, it is only if you added a line or opened a new line. I guess being a loyal customer for so many years means nothing if you are not new business.
help! quickly!
I'm trying to get a 150 credit, but theyre saying that since i bought it in the store, i would have to return it to the best buy and then go online and buy it at the discounted price.
im telling them that i ported my number over from sprint and what would i do with my number if i brought the phone back but shes saying that theres nothing she can do!!!....
im asking for a superviser.. can somone help..
I too got the $150 credit but in a different way. I upgraded and have a premier acct.
I did not call but rather went to the local ATT store. I had my original G-Note invoice and a copy of the ATT checkout shopping cart showing the 50% discount on a new order for a G-Note. I indicated that this wasn't right after less than 1 week and that I really didn't want the hassle of returning the phone and ordering a replacement at the discounted price.
I was very nice throughout and even commiserated with the woman helping me because she was shuttled around to 4 different parties within the internal ATT web order service center over a 20 minute period.
Eventually she just got her manager who explained to me that they were not going to be able to get it resolved with the on-line folks and simply issued my account a $150 credit.

I got a $75 credit for not getting my Note on time. I will stay happy with that and not get greedy. $225 for the Galaxy Note is still a great deal, seeing as I paid $249 for my SkyRocket.

Simple and painless $150.00 credit!
Wow this worked for me right away without hiccups. Around a 10 minute phone call with ATT CSR (nice lady). I just told her that I purchased the Note 2-days ago for 299.99 and today I've seen the 50% promo that drops the price to 149.99, and If if I can receive a credit for the difference. She said "please hold on sir", came back and advised me that she can issue a one-time credit for 150.00 back to my account with no questions asked and without confirming I had actually purchased the Note, at all! I actually purchased through AmazonWireless (they refused any price matching or adjustments unless the price drops on their site in the near future).
I was not being stern or sounding angry. Just professional.
I am premier and the phone was an upgrade through Amazon Wireless @$249.95
I dialed 611 and got connected to Enterprise CSR without any transfer to other CSR's!
Thanks to OP for this advise! And am happy with my SGN (ceramic white) for $100 plus 2-year extended contract of course and additional 181 day EFT @Amazon Wireless

I called 611 the other day to see if they could match a different 50% offer that was found online...they quickly said no because it was a promo for add a line or new customers. Quick history lesson, i bought an infuse last year under upgrade, its been replaced 5 times. I got real fed up and told them I'd cancel unless they replaced it with a different device, they said they could not do that but they would however allow my 2nd line to upgrade some 8 months early. I called 611 a few days ago to get everything in order when they told me because of my situation i need to upgrade that line directly thru them which meant i couldnt purchace at my local retail store (drag) so today i called 611 to place my order and i referenced this new 50% deal, he said i most likely wouldn't qualify...i said whatever that's fine. As we were about to close the deal over the phone he told me that he can't process the upgrade cuz his system is under maintenance and to call back tomorrow. I called back in 5 minutes and started over. I again mentioned the promo than they transferred me to premier. The lady had no problem giving me the 50% off plus free priority shipping plus free activation. Had i ordered yesterday or even earlier today when the first dude had system problems i would have paid 299+15 shipping and 30 activation fee, i ended up paying $157 all said in done. Pretty nice savings if you ask me.

I was charged $299 at bestbuy but I can still return/cancel the plan, then buy it on AT&T again then get 50% off.
Anyone?
ReZound is 79.99 with an upgrade/2-yr agreement
Does anyone know if this is only online or is it also in-store...I'm planning on purchasing the phone tomorrow but the Verizon Store is far and the store is obviously closed by now (10:10pm here in South Carolina). Any help or quick response would be great! Thank you!
i believe it's online only as of now. it'll go back up in price soon, though.
Alright...dang...thanks though!
If you want the Rezound and have the contract the $79 is a great deal. I wouldn't be afraid of doing it online. When I ordered mine they even comped the shipping (I ended up having to fight for it after the fact but won the minor battle) but you can ask them on chat if there is anyway to get the shipping free. The process for activation is pretty easy. One thing to note - if you have a 4G phone that you are replacing it with - they will not send out the sim card automatically. But your local store has those and can fix most anything if things get messy.
I ordered mine online a few months ago when it was $50. Phone was here 19hrs later. Popped sim card in and away it went

Go to Best Buy and ask them to price match, sell the beats earbuds because they're garbage and you've paid $30-nothing for your brand new rezound!
eh i paid $250 for mine on launch day..should've been 300, but on the website it said 250 because of a loyalty discount (not new every two because i was using an annual up anyway, so it was a weird unmentioned discount..)
i go int he store, ask if they can match it..at first they say no, so i'm like "ok i'll just go somewhere else that will, or order it online"
then another guy comes over and is like, well wait, lets see what we can do...turns out they were able to match it lol so maybe you can try in a store
Here's a question:
Why do American carriers charge such obscene amounts for cell phones?
For example, I can get an HTC One X with 5000 any network text messages, 2000 any network minutes, 5000 additional minutes when calling those on the same carrier and unlimited data (truly unlimited) for the equivalent of about $50 per month with NO upfront cost for the device (it's free).
I've seen adverts in the US that still ask for an upfront fee for the very outdated HTC Inspire and price plans that are laughable.
Am I missing something?

They are greedy.
Because the United States is roughly 40 times the size of the UK. Carriers figure they have to cover more rural geography while improving speed to satisfy customers in urban areas, particularly Verizon. Then pass the costs onto us.
Glad I got to pay a penny up front for my phone, but this two year contract without unlimited data is a steep price in the long run.
You seriously don't pay anything for your phones over in London, and get cheaper prices? Holy hell.... we get hit hard here in America. :-( Always a few $100 everytime we want to upgrade, unless we can hit a great deal, and even then... buying the phones the cheapest part of the process. I pay nearly $230 a month for 2 phones. *sigh*
It's $299 - $100 Walmart E-Giftcard = $199! Great for those for a new account.

I've already read people on the Slickdeals forum for those wanting to upgrade, they just called customer service to order the phone.
Thank you! Saw this on SD and was looking for the link to it. Do you know how I would apply my company discount if I was to buy via Walmart.com? Also, any chance Walmart would waive activation fee?

You can always call Verizon customer service to apply your company discount. If your company discount includes waiving of the activation fee, they normally remove that as well. It can all be done after the fact. That's how I've handle my previous new accounts before with different carriers so I would think they would do the same. I don't think you can get Walmart to waive it but you can always try by calling their customer service number.
Just pre-ordered...thanks! :good:
Thanks. I just canceled my Verizon order and did this. BTW you can't keep your unlimited data just by checking the keep existing data option, it messes up the order and then you have to call them and chose one of the other data options. I thought it'd be worth a try though.
It says it applies to upgrades as well, but it also says "ships when available". I have a $50 credit at Verizon so I might just get it there so I know I don't have to wait several weeks.
Also, people should note that it is an eGift card, so you won't be able to use it in stores on groceries etc.
Is this just a today thing, available through cyber monday or likely throughout the holiday season?
It's a limited time thing, but you don't get the card until you are out if the 14 day exchange period. The guy I ordered from said they already have the Verizon Note 2s in their warehouse, and are waiting for launch to send them.

Again, is limited time today? For a variety of reasons, I would rather buy on monday (I need to decide whether to upgrade or buy outright to keep unlimited data), but would do it now if the offer expires today.

I THINK a local store also had $100 gift cards with a bunch of in stock phones (including GS3) until December 1st. That doesn't mean the online site will keep this deal until then though...
You could call or email them. I'm sure they'll tell you if it's ending soon so you feel rushed to buy from them.
The $100 promotion runs until December 1st.

I have a $100 walmart GC so this is a perfect combo for me.
Does this one come with a sim card? I don't have my own yet and I know Verizon gives you one for free when you preorder from them.
I called my local wal-mart and they had no idea of the promotion. Can someone else call their local wal-mart and see if they know anything about this as well?
Plus it isn't really like we are getting the N2 for 199.99. It should say 299.99 + $100 eGift card.
EDIT: There is a commercial for this on the TV. I called back my local wal-mart and they said they have the same offer and that the associate I talked to earlier must've been in electronics and not in their mobile dept.
This may be an issue for some...
I was all set to jump on this deal and then read some of the terms and conditions. For those of you who are looking to upgrade another line and then move the phone over to your line in order to keep your unlimited data, you could potentially trigger a fee of up to $400 by doing so. Please see the bolded text.
Instant Savings Discounts
By accepting this Instant Savings Discount, you agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, Verizon Wireless notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our Satisfaction Guarantee.
Other than you simply deactivating a line we've activated, Verizon Wireless could notify us that you deactivated if:
You fail to pay Verizon Wireless in accordance with their terms and conditions
You transfer equipment we activate on one line to another Verizon Wireless line, even within the same account
You activate this equipment on a new line of service on Verizon Wireless and use it to replace an existing Verizon Wireless line by deactivating the existing line.
I'm guessing this won't be a problem if you transfer an eligible upgrade over to another line, since by doing such a transfer, it now ties the line that is taking the upgrade to the new data terms (e.g. removes grandfathered unlimited data). However, this is different than trying to circumvent the system and keep your unlimited data.
My fear is that this trigger doesn't happen within the 14 return period and then you are stuck with a phone on a different line than what you originally wanted.
My fear is what happens when I sell the Note2 for a different phone in 6 months. Am I going to get a $400 charge?

As long as you have kept the phone for a minimum of 181 days (approx. 6 months) you should be fine. As that is the trigger for the Instant Savings.
I decided to bite bullet by cancelling my Verizon pre-order and going for this deal, but once I ordered it they told me it was out of stock. Now I have to wait for some unknown time to even find out when my phone will be shipped. Unbelievable. I know I'm getting a $100 gift card, but it's not like Wal-Mart is the sorta place I would want to shop (with the way they treat their employees and whatnot). Eh, it's just a phone, I'll get over this. I'm just a bit irked right now.
Yes, I followed up on this since someone else in my family is interested in the N2. I am forced to buy one at VZW because I need to deactivate it and swap-lines. However, my sister does not... so I called in Wal-Mart and ordered through them since she does not really care when she gets it. The deal is this, the eGift card works both in real life and online per the rep. If you want to use these gift cards somewhere else, buy a visa gift card. They charge a fee, but pretty much you can move it elsewhere. The other issue is VZW allows you to get $50 off without activation fees (with some haggling, I've had no luck with this, but other members have) so $30 saved too. So essentially if you are up for the $50 off at vzw, you can save a whopping $20 by going to Wal-Mart. According to the rep i've talked to, they have no idea when they will ship out the phone. The phone, according to them, is in very high demand. They are awaiting stock still and have no clue when it will be shipped out from their warehouse.
On another note, I was looking at their insurance plans for phones. No deduct, covers stolen, water damage, etc... for $60 bucks for two years. Seems way better than VZW, which has a $150 deduct, and BB, which doesn't cover stolen devices.
Anyone deal with their insurance at Wal-Mart? Seems sweet, since they are such a big company they rarely fight with customers in terms of returns... so I assume this should be the least amount of hassle in covering the device?
EDIT:
here is the funny part too. you don't get the gift card right away. she said as late as feb 2013 you will get a code for it.

Where do you see insurance plans for contract phones? I can only find them for non-contract and pre-paid phones. Do you have a link?

Damn, I didn't even see that. I just read the link to the side that said accidental protection and skipped to the coverage
