ro.secure=1 on my non branded st15 so it's probably the same for you too. This means you can't access system files via adb (only the user files, which you already can access on your device). If you change the value to value to 0 by rooting and manually changing the file or by editting the boot image to include the zero value then you would be able to use adb to edit system files but that might be a bit counter intuitive.
check (2. ADB)... http://cjix.info/blog/misc/how-rooting-works-a-technical-explanation-of-the-android-rooting-process/ ...for a better explanation.

Hi,
I was wondering if its possible to mount the "/" in CWM ?
Giving access to /SYSTEM and /DATA folders from the CWM mount options?
I have had a bit of a play around in CWM4 but the mount functions in there, dont seem to work?
When i mount from CWM it only gives me access to the /SDCARD
So i guess my questions are....
1) Is it currently possible to do this?
2) If not - why not? If the phone is rooted, shouldnt it be possible to allow access to these folders via mount in CWM?
3) If it is currently possible, how is it done?
Cheers
Not sure what you are trying to do, but if you want to access system or data from recovery use adb.

theres no particular reason at the moment, but there has been cases where this would have been very handy to have... i was just wondering, why isnt it avaliable? it would/could be such a valuable resource, especially for those of us who dont know adb coding/phrases...
"/" is always mounted, w/o a "/" drive nothing can boot.
Unless you're talking about the USB mount, I don't think that's possible just like that.
If you want to tinker around on "/", like already suggested above, use an adb shell or the like.

it would have absolutely no value in that case.

Yeh sorry, i meant through the USB mount option from CWM4 or 5....
The reference "/" meaning the furthest possible directory back (like C:/ on a PC) - thus allowing access to the /SYSTEM and /DATA folders, mainly for issues that arise from say a faulty or incorrect version of a theme or framework-res.apk and systemui.apk etc etc etc - where the system wont boot or stuck in a bootloop, you know what the problem is, and want to rectify it without using adb shell, mainly because i dont know how to use adb shell - i assume its fairly easy, but have never tried
Just make a backup using CWM for those cases.
Backup -> install faulty theme -> bootloop -> restore -> be happy

Es works. You need to go to settings-tools-root explorer-mount R/W and mount system as writeable

Crash could happen because you don't have enough memory. I did it for some system files on my phone and it always worked fine. But I always deleted the files I wanted to replace first

I would imagine adb would be your best option

Oh GOD seriously?
Man you cannot replace the WHOLE system in any way except from recovery or bootloader...........NO ADB NO ES NOTHING will work.
ADB is feature that relies in the system of android. And when replacing the WHOLE system, the files needed for adb to work cannot change as they are in use, or if they change your phone will crash.
You can in no way change necessary system files while android is booted up beacause they are in use. Your whole operating system is in /system. Only recovery or bootloader will do.

I thought you could use adb in fastboot?
Then push the files

Im pretty sure you can't. ADB commands does not work in fastboot and vice-versa. ADB only works in Android environment AFAIK. Though you can use fastboot flash commands and not adb push....
Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, as long as they are not needed for the system to function properly. You can replace them with ES or Push them via ADB with root access.
Hello everyone,
I am trying to copy my entire sd card from my Nexus 4 to pc using adb pull /mnt/sdcard E:\Backups\nexus-4-sdcard-final\
It's going fine for a while, it's transfering all my files but after a while i get this error message:
Code:
cannot create 'E:\Backups\nexus-4-sdcard-final\Android\data\com.google.android.apps.docs.editors.slides\files\pinned_docs_files_do_not_edit\454c288823047ca656676a9effef1cb5\files\documents\1-MHOqmLRrNLLzh9TfmnCIzJBWxW-TNz3MrEHMsRWjkM\image\1nFkukIkRz4mJ6HfTZCaSv8gv94X-HBr8Rw5Uyy8Y': No such file or directory
I googled for a while and the only thing i found is this guy with similar error but he had folder on his phone with file name longer than 255 characters, it couldn't be created in windows and that's why adb was failing.
My question is:
Is there any flag for adb pull or way to skip files that can not be copied and keep copying?
Or if you can tell me how to avoid this error it's even better solution.
Thanks,
Milos

Why not use ADB Backup?
Far better than manually pulling (and easier to restore too).

Because I would like to be able to access my files without having to restore them back to a phone.
But if I don't find better solution I will do that. It's better than nothing, right? Thanks for the suggestion.
I have this problem too right now, What was your fix?
The first part of the problem is windows 10 you have to enable long file name support for paths longer than 260 characters . https://www.howtogeek.com/266621/how-to-make-windows-10-accept-file-paths-over-260-characters/ The second part is we need to get Google or one of the XDA members to include a manifest file in the adb that tells windows it supports long file names then it may work otherwise do the adb pull in Linux.

Hi, I have a rooted Lenovo B device (Mediatek M6735M) with TWRP recovery. I tried to change some build.prop values using an editor app but the result was I bricked my phone (and had to flash stock firmware again). Now, I wonder if and how I can apply some changes to the system files after flashing the firmware.
I want to ask you: is it possible to modify sys/system files after the firmware has been flashed (even the read-only ones), or is pre-flash manipulation the only solution? For example: is it safe to pull a system file with adb, modify it, then push it to the phone with adb?

No. You want to root your android again to do these.

I forgot to say that I rooted the phone again. I'd like to know if it is possible to edit system files after flashing a firmware (and rooting the phone) or if I'm forced to apply all system changes before flashing. Also, I'd like to know what kind of changes are allowed and/or forbidden (in order to avoid another brick).
For example, I found a read-only "serialno" file in "sys" folder and this file contains the serial number of the device. Could I pull this file with adb, change the content of this file (with another serial number) then push it into the phone?

You can change anything after rooting your phone. Make sure you are doing it correctly. Keep nandroid backup to recover from bad scenarios.

Ok, but I'd like to have some general tips or advices before doing that. For example, I read (somewhere, here on xda) that file permissions have to be the same as the original file, so if I edit a read-only file I have to restore its read-only status or I could brick the phone. Is this true?

Yes. If you change permission to read-write then after modification you want change permission to read-only.
Grab ithat build.prop file and transfer to memory card using TWRP. Edit at PC and restore it
So basically I'm using Xiaomi's Redmi Note 7 Pro and its camera skips frames when recording video and in one forum ( This one ) , in that forum that guy suggests to delete the thermal configuration file for the camera app which is limiting the camera from functioning smoothly.
So the problem is its in system directory and I really can't afford to root my device right now. I really can't. And while browsing along the internet, I found another forum ( This one ) which says you can remove some system apps without root just using some commands in ADB.
That made me think if theres a command for deleting a file through ADB and I found this forum ( This one ) which gave me this command ( rm /sdcard/0/file_to_delete ) .
I'm really Noob at these things and I want your help.
I used FX File explorer to check if the file exists and I can see it, but cant delete cos its read only and my device is not rooted. The file is in /vendor/etc/thermal-engine-camera.conf (or) system/vendor/etc/thermal-engine-camera.conf . I dont know if i should include the /system/ before /vendor/ or not, im nub.
So please tell me whats the proper command with the directory or if it wont work. I really want to get rid of that config file which is messing up the videos im recording and i really cant root Thank you

why? I mean theres a way people removed system apps without root using adb commands, so why not a config file?

Wondering why then you don't do how that people did?
FYI: Both the /system and the /vendor partition is READ-ONLY.
