Thank for that and the link , it wouldn't let me link it? I'm a man lol If people want to know why i use it then its mainly for peace of mind that i have a AV checking everything that comes on my phone. I was just letting people know and spreading the word.
OP thats what this forum is about but any way each to their own..
Aside from the antivirus aspect of Avast Mobile Security, is there any real value in the other components of this software? Here's an excerpt from the description of this app:
"Control anti-theft features with remote SMS commands for: history wipe, phone lock, siren activation, GPS tracking, audio monitoring, and many other useful tools. Your ‘invisible’ app hides itself, making it extremely hard for thieves to find and disable. A standalone yet tightly integrated component of avast! Mobile Security, avast! Anti-Theft is the slyest component on the market. Formerly known as Theft Aware, the Anti-Theft portion of avast! Mobile Security has been recommended by leading industry experts that include T-Mobile, N-TV, AndroidPIT, and Android Police."
Is this just hype?
I am currently using Lookout for the "security" features, but some Lookout features are only available in the premium version, while the Avast app seems to offer similar features for free.

I've installed the anti-theft and it works great, it integrates in your phone and when you activate it the app locks down so nobody can edit it. Then you can send SMS commands from another phone you select to lock the phone, make it scream, report its location, wipe data, disable settings and even continue to do so if the SIM card is removed. The intruder can't access the app because it "deletes" itself and you literally have to "call" your code to reactivate. But there is a HUGE list of advanced SMS commands you can send to your phone if its lost or stolen, including updating the lock message, activating a data connection, making it call a certain number, and performing specific actions on your phone. The first version is annoying though with the always-on icon, but they've fixed it now

Thank you for the feedback. Sounds worthwhile. I'll give it a try.
Would be so nice when somebody could mirror the apk...as always, i can´t install it on my sgsII (due to density settings perhaps?!).
Is someone here who likes to do that for me?

Oh yes its free!
Will give it a try, some functions sound interesting, altough not the antivirus part.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The anti theft feauture is awesome
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
The anti-virus even with the latest version of avast has a problem for any app even if its clean but the anti-theft bit is great hence why i use on the anti theft bit and then use mylookout for the antivirus.
But would love to know which AV is the best for free of course!

Antivirus / Protection app for Galaxy Y

Hello folks,
We use so many apps and games on our Galaxy Y, hopefully I have not faced any virus related issues on my Y.
But, I want to know from you guys.
Is Protection apps really good to have or it not required at all?
Please suggest some protection app(s) which is/are really good.
I have found some free as well as some paid antivirus/security apps in Google Play Store.
Which one is best?
It is always better to stay safe than sorry!
But, if we are safe without any antivirus, then it will be unnecessary to install an antivirus.
So, your suggestions are very much appreciated.

IMO, your brains are the best antiviruses. Read comments and Permissions required for all apps. If anything is suspicious, don't install it. Simple as that. Some AVs provide additional functions like blocking malicious sites or locating your lost phone though. You may wanna use the AV for those additional functions.
For me AVAST is the best one
GREEEEEETZ!!!
I am using netquin
For me Kaspersky Mobile Security the best & Simple Menu

Guy'z i think we did n't need any antivirus aps bcz android does n't have virus i f have u can use kaspery antivirus it very affective
Thank you all for your replies.
I have found plenty of antiviruses and security apps from Google Play Store and used some of them.
After dealing with some apps I found Kaspersky Mobile Security (Paid) and avast! Mobile Security (Free) is very good. It does not drain much battery and work always in background.
Also NQ Mobile Security & Antivirus (Free) have too many features but It slowed my mobile. And also the reviews of this app after upgrade is not good.
I have added some well known Antivirus/Security apps in the voting. So, vote for your likes and if you choose "Other" option then comment here with your choice.
Avast is the best & its free. Better than the paid applications.

I also thought that Antivirus is not necessary but one thing that makes me think about it is:
If antivirus is really bot necessary then why people download and use it from Play store? Some of them got thousands of downloads and 4.5+ rating. Not only that people also buying the paid antiviruses.
That's why I started this topic here to know why people use it and what is the best one to use.

Hey dude,
Antivirus just makes you satisfied and excitied about your cellphone just by doing the process of fake scanning your phone....
Acc to me antivirus just give mental satisfaction to the user except that its just useless....
Then also acc to me best AV is netquin and then cums avast......
yep antivirus is a WASTE
somewhere i read linux dont need a antivirus , n android is a linux dev.
i will say ' less educated/informed' people use paid antivirus .
kunal is right , it gives u SATISFACTION :O ;]
the best antivirus is a careful mind,
the best anti-theft is playing safe and not using my phone in the jeepney (Public Utility Vehicle) after the 1am shift
i worked hard for my phone so I take care of it always
and on the tech side, Android is a linux based OS, Linux is virus free
Thanks everyone for your useful opinions. Lately I have found that if you are not Using any app/games outside from Google's Play store (which is Recommend for android users) then you are safe from malwares or Security threat.
But one thing I have to say, Linux OS is not Completely Virus Free. Yes, it does not attacked by viruses too much like Windows OS, as Linux have very much Secured Root access. But it does not mean that it cannot be. See this Wiki page en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware#_ .
But, if you stuck with Google Play Store's apps then obviously you are secured and there is no need of any antivirus to install.
Some of you may have also seen, some free apps from Play Store gives you anonymous ads on Notification bar without any action taken by you. These are also kind of security threat, but it does not harm you as long as you don't click those ads and your a/c balance is not deducted.
Though, this type of adwares cannot be caught by antiviruses. You need 'adaway' or similar type app to remove those ads.

i'd sugggest adblock, search in play store,

Outrageous App Permissions and Can I Block Them at Will?

There's apps I want to use but I don't see why they need to have access to read my records and have network access.
Is there something that I can control the permissions of apps so I can install what I want and not let it have the permissions it wants?
I thought I had found something before I replace my phone but I can't remember... When I first got the Rezound it was my first smartphone and I installed a lot of apps and didn't pay too much attention to permissions, but this time, on my replacement I'm being more careful and it's interesting to see how many apps ask for permission that they definitely do not need.
Avast! will let you firewall apps, preventing them from getting network access.
PDroid allows you to invidually control each individual permission for every app. However it needs to be baked into the rom.

Thanks, that's the sort of thing I need. That particular one is getting a lot of bad reviews but they seem to be due to it not working with Jelly Bean. Might give it a go or try one of the other suggestions that come up.
avast! is good as well for blocking network connections, I like that. But there was an app I was looking at that wanted to read my personal stuff and I couldn't see why it should do that so I need something that I can set that sort of thing with.

How to read app's Privacy Guard status (Rom/AppOps integrated version)

Hi guys, I've recently started a personal project to extend the Privacy Guard feature of several custom roms to block certain methods of READ_PHONE_STATE when enabled (eg. getLine1Number)
Since I last looked at the Privacy Guard code it seems to have been integrated into the AppOpsService, and I'm at a loss as how to read the privacy guard status of an app inside framework code to block specific framework methods (blocking the READ_PHONE_STATE permission entirely isn't desirable as there are genuinely useful methods such as detecting phone calls etc)
Given the application context (context.getApplicationContext()) is available in the TelephonyManager class I should be able to check whether privacy guard is enabled for that app in methods I'd like to mask, but I don't know app ops well enough to do this. Does anyone have any examples or pointers? Thanks!
I'm currently working with the Simroms KitKat source, but IIRC the Privacy Guard code was merged from CM.
