FoxFi - Free App for WiFi Tethering (non-rooted) - Motorola Droid RAZR

I just came across a free WiFi tethering application called FoxFi, which is available from the Android Market. This enabled WiFi tethering for non-rooted phones. Version 1.31 is still a beta, and I've only downloaded it a few minutes ago. But I am connected via my phone right now and it seems to work.

I just installed this app this morning and tested it out for about 5 mins and it worked great!
Anybody know how this will appear on AT&T's system? Easily figured out by the carrier?

I have yet to contact the developer, but on SGN, all it appears to do is modify your stock wifi sharing settings. I'll try on a razr maxx tomorrow and see if it's the same.
edit: appears to be same on the moto bionic. Double check under settings, wireless, mobile hotspot settings.
Not saying it shouldn't work as intended, but the fact that it shows up in the stock hotspot is slightly alarming.

Works great on samsung stratosphere all the other tether apps didn't work for me so this one is doing something different

I added foxfi and turned on wifi hotspot and it isn't showing up on my devices. When I turn on mobile hotspot it wants me to pay Verizon 30 extra to activate. How are you guys getting around this?

Works great for me too. But I am concerned about my bill. Haven't got any prompts to pay yet.

You shouldn't have to explicitly turn on WiFi. I think that's why you're getting the Verizon notice. Once you start FoxFi, everything is configured in that application.
I did have a problem where it - FoxFi - seemed to keep background sync turned on. But, I also had some other things going on with my phone at that moment, so I can't say for sure if it was FoxFi that was doing it. I'll try it again later to see if I can determine what was going on.

Sometimes you have to reboot the phone after installing/configuring the app the first time.
Always open the FoxFi app for configuring or toggling the app on and off.
When you turn off tethering you may have to toggle wifi on again since it turns off wifi.
When the Green Tethering Icon shows up in the notification bar, don't open it or select anything from there.
I have it on two Razr's working fine.

Great app works great on my razr but just doesn't work on the thunderbolt

finally
So far this app works better than the phone 's app and the android wifi tether app.

doesn't work on my rooted stock Asia ROM (latest update), whereas the Android Wifi Tether beta works well. I can connect momentarily, but the connecting device never receives an IP address. not sure exactly what's going on.

Ive had that same problem with android wifi tether. It would connect and process. But after 50 megs process it dies out. And no connection. Ive played with dns settings and channels and nothing to get consistant tethering till now. With foxfi that is. Sux its not working for you. The only thing i can suggest is try different versions of the wifi tether app. Before the first 2 updates on the US razr. I was using an older version of android wifi tether that worked smoothly. You just gotta try to find the one that works for you

Love this App, Works great!!!
This app works perfectly on my CDMA RAZR and my wifes RAZR MAXX. Been using it for a few days. Successfully tethered a PS3, B&N Nook Color, all of our Mac Computers. The only confusing point with this one was that you cannot shut down the hotspot from the notification pulldown area. You have to open the app back up and uncheck the box for enabling / disabling the hotspot. Not sure how this works for getting around the included hotspot app but if it works I guess I don't care. Two big thumbs up for this app!

just downloaded and hook my pc up and now im posting from my pc using my razr wifi tehetr on this foxfi app so sweet...thanks for share!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry my english bye....

Just installed in on my Razr Maxx and it's working beautifully!

Let me know if you get billed for this... not sayin you will but more for peace of mind.

Works on my Razor Maxx. Connected on my Xoom. With FoxFi I Might turn data off on my xoom and concentrate on my razor's data usage.

Can Verizon track the data usage?? I Don't have the unlimitied data usage.

Verified working on my Razr Maxx. Got a 7mbps down speed on a mediocre 4G signal on my Iconia tablet.

Ya about the people with HTC phones
"Message from team: some user recommended FoxFi in a popular deal website and the whole world come to install it. While this is awesome we have a hard time keeping up with our support emails. We are aware of some most reported issues: the Motorola Triumph crash will be fixed in our next update. Atrix 2/4G are not supported yet and we are looking into it. HTC phones users can only use Bluetooth mode. A WiFi hotspot lock exists in HTC Android that can not be bypassed and we are truly sorry."
Just notice that in the what's new section of the market place.

Wifi tether

Is there a Wifi tether version that works on the x2? I'm rooted of course & supercharged & need something that isn't just ad-hoc. Already tried barnacle & the native app with phone toggle and so far its a bust. Is qpst an option?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
I'm in the same boat, I used QSPT to get the dun out of my tethering app, but it kept getting replaced.

Sorry just read entire post
Yeah, that makes an ad-hoc network. Is there an option for infrastructure?
This version of wifi-tether works for my win7 nwtbook but not my vista laptop. What do I need to do for the qpst method? Did it in my fascinate by going in with dun enabled. Can't seem to find how to enable it in the x2.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
As it stands the QPST don't work. as soon as you reboot it overwrites the change.
I use barnacle with no issue, rooted with v6.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
The problem is barnacle make ad-hoc also.
really? no wifi-hotspot for us yet?
I see the VZW application on my phone, haven't tried it yet though, didn't sign up for it. I wonder do they just charge me for it if I was to use it? Or would they call me up & scold me first?

They wont scold you for trying it. But it won't work unless you sign up for the additional service which costs $25 or $29 per month (can't remember which).
Is there no root app that allows us to use the Droid X2 as a wifi tether without the extra monthly charge? I keep seeing references to others who say they are doing this, but no one seems to want to say exactly what app they are using.

Actually I just tried it and I can connect to the internet with my W7 laptop with that ad-hoc tether program running on my Droid X2. I'm sending this reply over that connection.
I guess, as implied earlier in the thread, W7 makes provisions for ad-hoc. Don't know about other versions of Windows. My Samsung Galaxy Tab cannot see the connection.
still looking for a hotspot instead of ad-hoc wireless tether though, got multiple wi-fi devices that I may want to connect...
I am interested in the infrastructure Wifi as well. I am attempting to connect a Color Nook to the DX2 and can't get it to recognize the ad-hoc network.
for the NC, you have to dload an adhoc wifi supplicant file. then you have to replace the existing wifi supplicant file w/ it and then reboot. your NC should now be able to see and connect to ad hoc networks.
google is your friend.

FWIW The Wifi Teather program works with the new 2nd Generation B&W nook (at least since firmware update 1.0.1 - don't know if it worked before). So now the ad-hoc wifi teather works with my laptop running Win7 and my completely stock nook. I'm happy
im assuming there is no solution yet. im still using the ad-hoc method for now. but i would love to see a true hotspot
I don't know why people don't understand that you specifically said infrastructure vs ad hoc. You can use the phone for infrastructure for free.
First use the hotspot app and wait for it to start up.
Hook up your computer and open your browser
when it takes you to verizons website, all is good.
go to your phones dialer and type in *#*#INFO#*#* or *#*#4636
select phone info
go down almost to the bottom and you will see a button that says "turn off radio"
Press this and wait 10 seconds and press it again to turn it back on.
Now when it regains 3g signal you should have internet access on your computer.
You may have to redo this a few times for it to work. It works for me 75% of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work but most of the time it does.
Good luck

4G WiFi Tether Infrastructure Mode Workaround

Credit goes to colestein on androidcentral for this. Figured id post it here since i haven't seen it anywhere here on XDA.
I'm using WiFi Tether 3.1 beta 6
Download the Data Enabler widget from the Market
Setup Wifi Tether as Nexus One, netd, mms clamping enabled
Use Data Enabler to shut off 3g
Start tethering
once tethering is started, enable 4g
You should have a consistent 4G signal and the benefits of infrastructure mode!
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Im completely functional except my phone reboots once every 2 hrs or so...
I have 3 questions about wireless tether. Currently have it set up in infrastructure mode, and it is working great. I have wake lock on, not disabled because if the screen went to sleep, the connection would drop.
Wifi Tether profile is set up as Nexus One, netd enabled.
Here are my 3 questions.
1. When I enable wifi tether, the sprint tether icon appears in the taskbar. The software works, and I tether fine, but am I now registering tethering with the sprint network?
2. I do not have mms clamping enabled, What does it do, and should I have it enabled?
3. What does the enable routing fix option do?
This is working for me as well
Thanks!!
Sounds good, I look forward to testing this once I receive my Photon.
We have a similar fix like this for the Epic4G in that forum, but it's much more complicated and involves editing the framework.jar of the ROM.
Since 99% of tethering apps are filtered on the market for our phones, thanks to Sprint, a post to the file or an attachment of it would probably benefit the users of it in a greater capacity.
By the way folks, even though he isn't the creator of this workaround, the OP usually deserves a little thanks...
Worked for me in 3g. Very fast. I also get the tethering or mobile hotspot active (sprint mobile hotspot) but I just ignore it.
BTW, how is battery for most while plugged into the computer usb for charging while tethering. Mine can't keep up with the drain from the phone.

Im using 3.0. I installed it. Then installed data enabler widget. Turned off 3g started 4g. Switched tether to nexus one/netd. Started tether. Should have error. Restarted tether. 4g infrastructure, Worked great. Figured it out this morning. No sprint popup in status bar either. Running netflix great through ps3.

There's a new version just released on 11/27/11, im gonna test it and see if it changes behavior in any way.
Data Enabler you can easily get from the market.
My phone still reboots every 2 or 3 hrs while tethering in infrastructure mode, not sure how to fix that

Currently the built in WiFi tether when hacked with sqlite editor will only work in USB tether mode. Wifi tether isnt 100% Alot of sites just fail to load for what ever reason. Maybe this has changed now, but when I changed the entitlement check on mine alot of site just would never load over wifi, but worked great over usb.
Ill deff look into it once im off work.
I would prefer wifi tether or maybe even bluetooth tether for a tablet

I did actually use the built in WiFi tether as well as the wifi tether apk and both of them showed the same issues with not loading certain pages correctly. However I never fixed the permissions since it was never mentioned to try that. Once I get my new razr on friday i'll give it a try.
I think though that its something with how the data gets routed from the 3/4G chip to the wifi chip. When any of you have been wifi tethering with either application, have you been on 3G or 4G data? perhaps this is the issue? I've been in a 4G area trying to wifi tether and having it fail, but I have never tried on 3G...
Also I wonder if after the OTA update that the results will be different? can anyone confirm this yet?
Is anyone else getting the message "tethering or mobile hotspot active" in the notification bar when using the wifi tether apk? My X never displayed this notification when using wifi tether.
I just tried the Barnacle Tether app. THe phone is brand new, so I don't have any billing info. however, I did get the "tethering" notification. Is there a setting that hides my profile first?
We will see.

Anyone w/ a Nexus 7 Tablet (or similar tablet)-How are you tethering with the photon?

Hey MoPho's - so the google wifi tether app works great with 4g / sprint and a laptop - read a few preliminary posts on how this might not work on tablets (adhoc issues), such as the Nexus 7; that I picked up the other day.
Has anyone had any success with any form of tethering with our photon and this one?
I've read some posts of using PDANet on one the tablet and FoxFi on the phone to get some functionality working via Bluetooth - however, not everything [app or system specific] is functioning.
Well, I'm just on a rooted stock only sprint rom - it would be cool if by chance you had this tablet [nexus 7] or something similar to where you were able to get data/internet functioning fine via our carrier's data through either bluetooth or wifi tethering. Thanks and cheers.

Ah, yes - thanks for this I'll have to try this in the evening sometime - I hope this will give some better/full functionality over the BT maybe...
I did try the PDANet installed on the N7 and FoxFi on the Photon for bluetooth - tried connecting to sprint 4g prior to it and then paired the BT between each other and it seemed to work. Only web browsing seemed to work for me in this case, trying to send an email via Gmail app didn't seem to work.

Indeed so (at least for now perhaps). Just came in to reply and say this exactly
I'm on the nexus 7 as we speak connected via the instructions/video above + tethered to my photon (with google wifi tether v3.1 beta 14) and an ad-free data on-off by antonio la rocca on google play market)
I was able to see the SSID on the photon and enter my password via wpa2.
Got a popup message saying that not subscribed to hotspot service from sprint / the 4g kept dropping -
So disabled that and left default 3g - which works so far. At least Gmail from my previous post is working...sent test email from nexus to gmail photon app.
Would be sweet if there was a 4g workaround... maybe another profile?
Before the nexus 7, I was using the same wifitether app without data enabler widget to tether my laptop and used the droid cdma profile, and I was able to use 4g on that... didn't enable MSS clamping until now...
The 4g at least allowed uninterrupted voice and data...
Maybe some others have some more input, but thanks again for confirming that.
One other thing I noticed was that the wifi widget hangs upon closing everything - needed to reboot photon / perhaps I need to look over the disconnect process better - just canceled it from the top. Not a major issue, just pointing out.

This is a little late. Just got my nexus7 and use FoxFi Pro (can't give a link because the powers that be decided to throttle that. I'm about sick of moderators, politicians cops and the general "I'm da law" types, but I digress) it cost $7. Use the Bluetooth tether from FoxFi and no problems so far. And yes, it works on 4g since you aren't using the wifi. Haven't bothered with PDAnet tho it comes with it. But so far it's great. I did lose connection once and had to change the network name on the wifi and did get a note saying that my Sprint account does not include tether...but so long as I'm not going overboard on g's I don't think they'll even notice.

Wifi Tethering?

I've heard that Foxfi doesn't work with the Droid DNA--is there any way to use turn this device into a mobile hotspot without having it pre-included in my data plan?
This is my first smartphone; I've been using my Nexus 7 and a dumb phone for the past few months now, and I felt I should upgrade to a smartphone since I'm not living on campus anymore. This seems like a great phone in and of itself, but I'd still like the option to tether my tablet. Any suggestions?
As long as you are rooted, you can use WiFi Tether For Root Users (yellow WiFi bars picture) and it will tether just fine. You won't need to include tethering in a data plan to use it.

BigRed is right. Works great! Also, check these settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JN (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
WiFi-driver reload: Checked
Routing fix: Checked

How about the built-in android tethering application, does that work after rooting?

unless you have unlimited you dont need to pay for it in your data plan, they cant charge twice for limited data

Yeah but that's one more app running in the background. If you have that feature built in the os why not run the native app IF it works? That's why I'm asking... does it work?

It only runs in the background if you have it turned on and you are using it, just like any stock app.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Numerous errors on starting, unable to tether. Or more precisely, other devices can see the hotspot and tether to it, but do not get Internet access.
My main problem is that my phone will show up as a device instead of a router (like it used to on my OG Incredible), thus not allowing other phones or tablets to connect to it because they don't see the connection. Laptops work find though. I use "wireless tether for root users" with the green signal symbol and not the newer version because the new one doesn't show the data speeds and total data used in the app.
I am using the latest yellow version and both my Galaxy Note and Lenovo laptop tether to it but do not get Internet access.
sorry for jumping on old post.
Just wondering. On my moto droidbrazr maxxbi did an sqlight hack to bypass the entitlement check and was able to use the stock hotspot app even though i was on unlimited data. Would a similar work around work for dna?
Here are the settings that are working for me on ViperDNA 1.1.2

Solution WiFi Tether_HTC DNA
Just enabled my WiFi Tether I am using WiFi Tether 3.2-beta2 with ROM Super Stock v1.0106.605.4 http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565190
Searched YouTube and found..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF77Pk-nZng Followed his steps and I'll be it worked!
LOL for anyone still using the DNA, I just installed NuSense Six and FoxFi works perfectly - not ad-hoc, full infrastructure mode, so it will work with devices other than PCs.

I'm using all stock roms (I was s-off and flashed stock recovery, grabbed OTAs, flashed TWRP recovery). I installed SuperSU & BusyBox than was able to tether using Barnacle Wifi Tether~ it gave me an error for adhoc but I was able to click associate and use my 4g on an iPad.(Also checked external IPs & ran speedtests to confirm it was using 4G)
Not working for me. It gets stuck at "please wait while starting". And just spins. I can back out of it but nothing good happens.
