CDMA / GSM - HTC EVO 3D

What's the different between CDMA and GSM Rom's
I have an EVO 3D X515m

Well for one thing - they work on different frequencies
We're comin from a pure power source.

The difference between the ROMs are that the CDMA ROMs work on the CDMA Evo 3D and the GSM ROMs work on the GSM Evo 3D. If you tried to flash a ROM for the other phone, you'd be in a pickle. Find out which phone yours is for sure before doing anything. If you're from Europe chances are yours is GSM, so don't try anything in the CDMA development forum.

If you have a Sim card, its gsm.

Cdma vs gsm

I've been trying to Google this and got no results. All the youtubers I asked and all the Google searches I did and I got the same result. The cdma e3d is for the USA and gsm is for the rest of the world...ARRRR! I ALREADY KNOW THAT!
So can someone please explain the internal differences between the cdma and gsm 3d and why can't gsm users flash cdma Roms (if the radio remains untouched). I'm sure I'm not the only 1 wondering why the cdma EVO 3s gets so many more roms than gsm users.
Please don't flame at me if this question has been asked elsewhere.

I was also searching for this and already found out that its kernel related because it has some other drivers and stuff running to maintain the cdma network.
Theres kernel and framework differences. Even if you were to extract a gsm kernel, and put it into a cdma.rom, it still wouldn't work properly. I've looked at the frameworks for both phones, and there was a lot more differences in the code than I had previously anticipated.
The reason there are more cdma roms, is simply because there are more devs/chefs/tweakers that use/have cdma phones.
Also many old & new developers for the CDMA EVO 3D came from the EVO 4G, which had a huge following on the same carrier.
It was like a migration of birds.

Ah, that explains it. I was wondering why there is so much more development going on for the CDMA E3D than the GSM, seeing as how Sprint is the only carrier using the CDMA. Stupid, multiple standards!

Wrong.
Verizon and U.S Cellular both use CDMA.

But do Verizon, US Cellular, or MetroPCS offer the EVO 3D? That's what we're talking about here, the EVO 3D.

I stand by my comment about stupid multiple standards. Get with the rest of the world, U.S. carriers! Stop being different just for the sake of being different.
Now, not knowing anything at all about ROM cooking, will it ever be possible that ROMs for the E3D may be able to support both CDMA and GSM, or is there no way to code that kind of logic?

Well kinda. It's not hard to write the ROM for the gsm EVO if you made a ROM for the cdma 1. But It's hard because It's gonna require testing on a device which the cdma dev does not have.

New forum for evo 3d gsm themes

OK I'm sure I'm going to get some push back on this, but i'm going to ask any ways.
I have been themeing my evo 3d gsm and have noticed a few things tghat are different on the gsm and cdma versions.
most notable is the weather lock screen. seems the image for the cdma version is inside the idleweather.apk and the gsm seems to be somewhere else.
cdma themes dont work on gsm and I'm not sure if gsm work on cdma (i dont have a cdma).
So to help the search and theming of the evo 3d gsm can we have our own forum.
Again I see a theme that looks cool, but was not waware it was for the cdma version until I clicked a link that brought me to the cdma development forum.
Thanks

The mods should seperate our forums entirely since our software is different. It sure would make it easier on all of us.
if you like my work hit the thanks button.
Maybe the forum should be like this: forums --> EVO 3D --> choose from EVO 3D gsm/EVO 3D cdma/EVO 3D general/EVO 3D q&a. After choosing (for me gsm obviously) you can choose between gsm general, gsm q&a, gsm development & gsm themes and apps, and for the cdma bit, change all gsm bits to cdma.
Also I think there should be a new forum for all sense devices. So it's forum --> htc sense --> choose sense version --> more options like modding, skins, widgets etc. Because nowadays I look in sensation themes sometimes, because it has some nice skins in.
Both of these ideas would be very organized (at least in my opinion...)

the cdma and gsm framework is nearly completely different.
any theme or mod which include the systemui.apk/framework-res.apk etc will make your gsm device unusable if it was based on cdma files - the same if you do it the other way round.

Yea I have a cdma evo and I could see this being useful. I mean If we have two different development sections I think this is logical

i luv GSM but anybody not interested.....T.T
GMS FOREVER...kk
As of right now I would have to say that it is necessary to have different threads for GSM and CDMA themes since the apks are different. Once DiamondBack2010 releases the new tool for m10 files it may not be as necessary. I, as well as most of the mods, have been plagued with requests from GSM users that we have a tough time fulfilling due to the fact that we don't have GSM phones. If there were a GSM specific theme thread it may make the CDMA side a little less hostile. I only say that cause the average user does not do any theming themselves and get frustrated when their request isn't fulfilled.
I agree. If our ROM forums are separate, then so should be the theme forums to avoid confusion.

I also agree !
I would LOVE to have all the derp colors theme for GSM
I have a cdma and I agree with you on this but it would make it easier if xda had the two phone separated in two diffrerent forums... One for gsm and one for cdma... But of course not everybody thinks the same way we do

wont need to start from a scratch but we will need to recompile few components/libraries..
Really looking forward to viper which has been given permission to port to gsm

You gotta have permission to work on a GSM?
You have to have permission from the original developer of a ROM to port over their ROM, otherwise you are kanging and not giving proper credit.

Probably because of the carriers? No USA carrier has the gsm. Only rogers from canada for x515a and whatever european ones for the AWS/2100 x515m.
It is more of an exclusive thing to own a gsm 3d in the USA, imo. You have something not many people have.
there are others out there with gsm..
im probably one of em..

I agree. I read it wrong. I thought he wrote that you have to get permission to work on a gsm. My bad.
Maybe because there's 3 times more cdma user than gsm

countries not having developers isn't the same as countries not having the device.
i think majority of users, low end ones atleast, have a gsm device. (outside of US and canada)

[Q] EVO 3D CDMA or GSM

Hi,
n00b here,
Do I need EVO 3D CDMA Android Development or EVO 3D GSM Android Development with my phone?
How do I recognise what Phone I have,.
I heard, European EVO 3D is GSM, and so no CDMA ROM will work.
No sim card-cdma
Sim card-gsm
Do not flash roms or kernels or anything that is not meant for your phone...ever
We're comin from a pure power source.
What he said. You could be left off with a bricked device in your hands if you install the wrong Rom

Just in case you're still not sure...
THIS is what a SIM card looks like:

[Q] Is it possible to put GSM roms on CDMA or vice versa?

Just wondering if this is Ok to do because there are some ROMs that are better/cooler on GSM/CDMA (GSM ROMs that CDMA users might want to have but that aren't available for CDMA or CDMA ROMs that GSM users wish to have that aren't available for GSM users. A build of cm 11 is already posted for the GSM HTC evo 3d and not for CDMA yet. I was thinking about flashing this ROM but wasn't sure if It will mess up on my CDMA evo 3d or be unstable. If I'm not making sense let me know. Any answers will be thanked. PS: if the major thing of flashing GSM ROMs to CDMA is only like no calling or no connection to towers or what ever, its not a problem because I use my phone on WiFi only and play games for the most part.

I wouldn't recomend you to flash GSM ROM on CDMA device. It's possible your installation procedure will stop automaticaly but there is a chance it will brick your device.
I tried once, and it screwed my recovery and didn't boot ..... Not advised:banghead:
