[Q] Is there a way to download an apk without installing? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to download an apk from Android Market without having it installed?
I have a Nook Tablet and some of the packages (for example, Hacker's Keyboard) cannot be installed normally and have to be placed in /system/app/ in order to be installed. I tried to download an apk from the market and it got installed and caused some difficulties and I wish to avoid this.

Since this is a free app I do not think this violates anything but if it does let me know and I will remove

Google is your best friend
Search "Download APP_NAME apk" (replace APP_NAME with your desired application) and you will find bunch of download links.
But please be aware that non-market apps can be malicious.

Thanks for the reply. I want to download either from the developer or from Android Market, because of the risk of downloading a malicious package. It seems the best course of action would be to download from the developer when possible and if it is not possible, to simply do without the app.

Just install it from market, use a backup app like titanium to make a backup of it, then uninstall it and use a root file explorer to move the backup you made to /system/app...

Moved to Q&A as not development.
You can't really do this, as you need to install the app via the market. It's a form of piracy protection.

Actually, he can do it, by using the latest version of Titanium Backup and option is working fine, tried it myself.
Titanium Backup will attach apps to market as long as apk wasn't modified. It also works for paid apps, but in that case purchase won't be authorised when you wish to update and Market will present the Buy Now dialog.

But that didn't work for me... I don't know why but it is a free app....
It isn't really meant to work, so I can't really help. Either way, paid apps won't work with this method.
I'll try it with a free app myself, though I don't quite think it will work... not sure why, just a feeling
I have noticed that when I restore a nand backup that all my apps come back and the market recognises them.

Safe 2 Remove Apps

Please tell me a list of apps that are safe to remove from XperiA X10 (2.1).
Also, I use Moxier to access my office emails. Is there a way to install the updated version from market? I tried it, and it did not let me install it even after rooting.
Lastly I have an icon on the application drawer which reads "org.microemu.android.Micro..." What is this? And How can I get rid of it?
theres a thread already made with a full list of safe to remove apps, look around for it

It can't be updated because it's protected. Use Titanium Backup to uninstall Moxier. Then you should be able to get the latest version (which I believe you would have to buy).

It's org.microemu.android.MicroEmulator, which is a part of Opera Mini. It can also be used to run other JavaME apps on Android, but I can't find any list of apps that uses it. Did you delete Opera manually or something? Maybe it left some files behind. You could try installing and uninstalling Opera Mini.

[Q] Removing Bloatware w/ Titanium

So I got got root, after having a long and hard decision, because I soft-bricked my phone yesterday.
Anyway, I got titanium because no other apps were free on Market like Root Manager or Root Explorer.
When I go to Backup/Restore I get a list, but they're not apps, they're stuff like:
Accounts
Application Widgets
Bluetooth Pairings
Country, Language, Time zone
Wi-Fi Access Points
but I want to delete the Avatar, TeleNav, and others.
PS, I've tried searching, didn't help me, so please don't tell me to "SEARCH". OH and I also read the sticky, didn't help x]
Any help is gladly appreciated
Does anybody know how? Please?
I prefer File Manager, it's free and pretty easy to use and delete all the Bloatware. Download it, open it and navigate to My Phone>system>app and look for the apk you want removed.
Is it ASTRO file manager, eFile - File Manager, or just plain "File Manager"?
Oh and what is .odex and .apk? Should I delete both?

.odex is the file before deodexing.
.apk is the output once deodexed.
Yes, delete both.. But I would recommended titanium to uninstall. And there is a link in the sticky that tells you all of the .apks & .odex files you can remove...
Plain File Manager.
Here's a list of safe programs you can remove.
First off all the Standard Apps:
AccountAndSync.apk/odex -> The app in the drawer, not the settings.
AddToHome.apk/odex
AudioPostcard.apk/odex
Avatar.apk/odex -> The app that launches Avatar in the video player.
BuddiesNow.apk/odex
Dlna.apk/odex [Allshare]
FlashPlugin.apk/odex
GoGo.apk/odex
Infoalarm.apk/odex [Daily Briefing]
KindleStub.apk/odex
Layer-samsung.apk/odex
MediaHub.apk/odex
Memo.apk/odex
Mini Diary.apk/odex
MobiTV.apk/odex
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk/odex
Myfiles.apk/odex
Sims3_Samsung_Embed_Launcher.apk/odex
slackerradio.apk/odex
Swype-Tips.apk/odex
Telenav.apk/odex
thinkdroid.apk/odex [ThinkFree Office]
vvm-signed.apk/odex -> T-Mobile Visual Voicemail [can be re-downloaded from the market. for some reason that version is the preferred one.]
VoiceRecorder.apk/odex
VoceDialer.apk/odex
Writeandgo.apk/odex
TouchwizWidgets:
Day.apk/odex
DualClock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Calenderclock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Feedandupdate.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_stockclock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Weatherclock.apk/odex

Open SU and see if you accidentally denied it. If so click it if not then reboot your phone and open Ti again. That should prompt SU.

The same thing happens to me when I try to install the Swype app....
Thanks for the link. How the heck do I get it to work without the constant force closes?
make sure it's named vendor.apk and change permissions to fit the other system apps.

Thanks for the market tips. Everything worked fine. My biggest problem is with the swype. f/c's start when I reboot phone. Running CM stable for vibrant. Don't know how to fix...
Good news, I updated to CM nightly 168 and the FC problem stopped for now.

If you having problems installing the swype apk... you can use Ti backup to uninstall swype, then reboot (important). install swype directly through "files" app or "my files". Worked for me!!
you guys realize that swype updates itself through the settings>input>swype settings> ..
right??? I guess its after the last update mines been updating
Any themes around?

[Q] I think I've been a bit silly!!

ok, I downloaded a cheeky .apk of a paid for app so I could play around with it before buying, now I've got a bit of a problem though. I want to buy the app but when I go into the market place it shows up as purchased already and worse still, if I try and download the update or instal after uninstalling it throws up an error. I've tried uninstalling and downloading etc. but no joy. At this point I just want to pay for the damned thing and get my updates, any clues on how I might go about doing that??
What on must do is first backup he old marketplace using titanium backup. Then freeze the market updater. Uninstall the current market you have. Put this old version of the market that I attached under system/app. Reboot and purchase the app. Then restore original market and unfreeze market updater.
Edit: Added apk

Excellent I had some problems getting the 'vending.apk' to install, both the version you uploaded and one I found on the web but got around it by upgrading to ICS which seemed to come with the old market place on it
