Is there a way to have the Fascinate read an external drive such as a thumbdrive?
Yes. glitch kernel 14 for any ICS rom supports this. At least so it claims. I'd test it our but its not that practical unless you get a portable source of power. Because it wont work unless you use a powered hub or y-cable.

Hi guys,
Has anyone ever thought of connecting a slim USB powered external DVD re-writer disc drive to the Samsung Galaxy S2. I am still awaiting my Galaxy S2 to be delivered and from what I have gathered in order for this type of usb hardware to be recognized in the OTG, there would need to be support for the CDFS and UDF filesystems which many burned CD's and DVD's are recorded in. It's a 2.5" usb powered DVD re-writer (no external power needed) I attach and use sometimes on my win 7 laptop.
Would be awesome if I could view many of my old backed up DVD rips (standard 700mb XviD's) that I burned to CD through the USB OTG on my Galaxy S2 using an Android video p[layer like Rockplayer or moboplayer. Does anyone agree?
many other possibilities with burned CD and DVD media such as photo CD's, traditional music CD's (cda) and more all on Android. Optical disc drives, like other usb drives tested on Galaxy S2, may likely require separate power source.
I've even written to Samsung's UK headquarters about it and they said they will forward the request onto the relevant department. I know USB OTG function on Android is still in it's infancy.
I have breezed a look at these two favourite XDA topics relating this issue:

Any response?
i kinda doubt itll work due to the power requirements of the drive
i know that you cant connect up a 2.5" harddrive cos they suck down more power than it can output.
hell even a 256gb thumb drive ive got didnt work
Another related topic about this, this below link:
RISC OS Open: Forum: When should we have a new BeagleBoard ROM image?
Has anyone on this forum with knowledge on these disc file-systems made any investigations as to whethere it could be supported on the Galaxy SII? Maybe on a custom ROM maybe?
Please anyone share something of what you knows

Power is not a problem. It works fine. All you need is a separate USB hub with its own power adapter.
You connect your USB hard drive or anything else to a hub and connect your hub to your Android device
by USB OTG cable.
You should also have a program which can read for instance NTFS file system for your Android like
USB OTG Helper or Paragon NTSF&HFS+
The problem is that there is still no similar programs for Android which could read CDFS or UDF
I think i saw that option on stweak on dorimanx kernel

Could you please write any updates about this? I want to buy external dvd-rw but I'm not sure in success.. Is it possible to burn disks? How it can be done?
Hi,
Are there any GB ROMS or kernels that support USB Accessory Mode? The main reason I put custom firmware on my phone was so that I could develop hardware to interface with the phone. thanks!
I also want to know weather it is possible....
I do not believe that the Vibrant hardware supports USB Host mode. To do that the vibrant (and it's battery) would need to provide at least 100mv (I think thats min) to the 5v vbus to power the accessory.
The USB port is now set to draw power (for charging etc) not provide power.
edit: check out the Nook Color forum. There they have (sort of) gotten the Nook to support USB Host mode using a powered USB hub. It took a kernel change and app to switch. It's different on the Nook as it uses open source bootlaoders (Das u-boot.bin) vs. the closed source Samsung boot.bin, sbl.bin we are stuck with.
I looked into this a while ago. The best efforts were attempting to use Sven's Nexus USB Host Mode hack. Unfortunately the hardware is so different between the two models that the hack simply wouldn't work. No one else it seemed took up the torch to make this work. Can't seem to find the thread discussing this. It was like 8 months ago.
And the power issues of the phone are easily negated by using a powered USB hub in the chain between phone and device. The only limiting factor for the Galaxy is not having a supported driver.

Officially accessory mode is implemented starting with Android 2.3.4. In this mode Android phone is an accessory to some host external hardware and receiving power (0.5A) out of the host.
Host mode is implemented officially only on tablet Honeycomb 3.1. I think Google made external usb devices such as memory, keyboards, and mice usable for Honeycomb tablets.
If you are interested find IOIO project which uses ADB for bridging external hardware on Android before 2.3.4.
Any update on accessory mode in gingerbread? I see that some new 2.3.5 stuff is out.
Would like to get working on developing external hardware to interface these sweet machines.
Just found this link: http://www.techspot.com/news/45032-rumor-ice-cream-sandwich-coming-in-october.html . Even if the Galaxy models get usb accessory mode, it looks like there is a new line from samsung that will not only support usb accessory mode, but will support usb host!
I have a xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver and wondering if i could sync this receiver with my HTC flyer
Purpose:
So I can sync an xbox controller to my emulators
Something like what this person did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Omyv6YzBmA
Only thing I need is an micro usb to standard usb adapter, but I am wondering if any adapter will work syncing xbox controller with the htc flyer
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-Male-Female-Adapter/dp/B0027YYMU6
You need to know if the Flyer supports OTG or not, the Xoom does. That's the cable that guy is using in that video. I'm not sure if it's supported on the Flyer.

It looks like the Flyer doesn't support USB host, as some things would need modifying from the searches I've done. You could buy the $2 item and try it, but it most likely will not work.

Lol, Ill get it and try it out.
But it doesn't make sense, how can HDMI out work from the Usb port but it cannot host material
I read the 3.1 honey comb port should enable usb hosting, any idea if thats true?
The two are not in any way related, however when I looked at the modules loaded it appeared that the HC rom would support usb host.
I sent an email to HTC this is what they said:
Unfortunately, your tablet cannot be used as a USB host at this time. You may want to download a 3rd party application from the Android Market that would allow you to monitor access points. Remember, HTC does not support any third party applications. Any idea what 3rd party aps could do this?
Honeycomb and ICS supports USB ports.

I think the port does work in usb host mode but it is not powered, so you need to use a powered hub to get anything to work. This has been discussed before, do a search and see what you find.
Here you go:

Works in HC but you need a powered USB hub. Maybe it will work without a hub in the official HC release?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17562960&postcount=29
Yes it works in HC , you must use a powered hub
I would like to be able to hook up a hard drive if we ever get honeycomb. I have just enough knowledge that I am certain I would brick my device if I try the HC leak install on my BB Flyer, so I am impatiently waiting for the OTA update.
Anyway, can I hook up a hard drive with external power or do I have to have a powered hub? I have successfully used a portable usb drive and a Y-cable with power end plugged into a usb battery before where host was enabled on my Gen 7 Archos, but there wasn't enough power to actually run the drive. Do you think this setup will work on the Flyer with HC?
AS long as your hard drive will run without any power from the Flyer and is properly formatted (FAT32) it should work with or without a hub

It should work with any device that that does not require that it be powered by USB for example the external powered hard drive you mentioned. For directly connected devices only low power devices such as pen drives would work, rotational disks will most likely require a powered hub/battery to operate.

so no support for NTFS or EXT3?

It depends on drivers, and how vold works. Ext3 should work, or could definitely be made to work. I've never tried NTFS so can't comment on that.
I saw a lot of videos on the internet talking about the SGS III's ability for OTG USB connections and I decided to try them out. While I was able to run a PSX Controller, a wireless keyboard and a mousewith the cable, I was able to get it to detect only a 4 GB pendrive and only in FAT32 format. It outright refused to detect my HDD of 160GB and 500GB {both NTFS} or my 8GB microSD card which I put in through a card reader. Now, most sites I've seen using the OTG feature use the 2nd cable I've posted as an attachment. I know this is an absurd longshot, but is there anyway that my using the cable in the 1st attachment instead of the second a reason for why it isn't working for me? If not, what am I doing wrong?
No, the cable is just fine if it works for some devices. Most generic ones just work fine.
The actual reasons are multiple:
NTFS is not supported by the stock kernel. Flash e.g. the aftermarket Siyahkernel to use the devices
Card readers need drivers, they are not "real" mass storage devices. I'm not sure if and which drivers are included in the kernel.
USB 2.5" HDD's without external power supplies need a HUGE amount of power, often even above the specified 500mAh. I don't think the S3 can provide that much power and you may damage it trying or even if it works (Altough I think it has a limiter, but better safe than sorry)

Thank God. I thought I screwed up the device somehow. I understand. I merely wanted to see whether or not I have support. I highly doubt I'll do anything beyond actually playing using the PSX Controller, but I wanted to know how far it can go. Just one more question. Flashing an aftermarket kernel means data loss right?
Depends. You usually have (or at least are strongly recommended to) factory-reset the device due to the low-level changes between the ROM's which can and will cause issues.
However that is not really an issue;
Just copy your whole internal sdcard (/mnt/sdcard) to an USB stick and do the same with your Apps through Titanium Backup.
Then restore both again after having flashed the custom ROM and you're up and running without data loss.
You'll need root for Titanium Backup tough, just flash Siyahkernel or CF-Root through Odin to gain the privilege.
Right now, I'm using an HTC EVO 4G LTE, running ICS. Now the source code is out, however, no one has yet to add USB host capabilities to their kernel, so I figure I might as well do it myself. I read on kernel development, and I have a surface level understanding, but I'm just interested in adding the USB host capabilities. So how would I go about doing that? Thanks.
IIRC ICS should have OTG that works for keyboard and mouse. Of course the microUSB port on your phone needs to have the hardware to support OTG and also may or may not supply power.
Yeah, the hardware on the EVO supports it, it's just that HTC never enables it in their kernel.
