(Q) Flashing i9000 and nexus s Roms - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I flash ice cream sandwich roms from the galaxy s i9000 , then flash an ics vibrant kernel, modem and key mapping ?
What about the nexus s ?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I know its possible to port a I9000 but i'm not sure about Nexus S.
There is a guide lurking around here I know that about the I9000 search it. I'm on my phone right now, can't do much.

Yes for i9000 since hardware is almost identical. You can straight up flash a i9000 rom with only minor issues.
Not the same for Nexus s would take work on rom to make it compatible. same CPU at least but might have to change some other drivers.

I was also asking myself this same question. Thanks for the info. It would be nice if someone could give some more info on getting the nexus s roms to work.

can any body tell me that if i upgrade my vibrant t959 with vibrant 4g rom downloaded form samfirmware what will happen...if some thing is happed after flashing can i be able to flash it back to stock?????? help plzzz want to use gingerbread..
If you do as you're planning, not only will your phone not work, you WILL permanent brick it!
T959v IS NOT compatible with t959 without HEAVY modification, add to the fact that t959v have bootloaders in its Odin package.

Your partitions WILL NOT MOIJT if you flash a sgs 4g rom without a modified kernel, and your buttons WILL be.messed up, and possibly your headphone icon will indicate the reverse of what it actually is.
There's a reason we don't have a straight port from the gt-i9000 nor a straight port from the sgs 4g...

If Google or the Stickie Threads hold the answer to your question, there's really no need to ask. Especially a subjective one that's been asked in a thousand other threads by a thousand other n00bs with less than 6 posts to their name.

Dude, seriously?
All we can get are ports, and most devs have moved on from the vibrant.

don't expect official support for a phone this aged. This doesn't that it's a bad device, it just means be happy with what you have or spend the cash for something new.

[Q] My new Samsung galaxy S2 SGH-I777

Hello all
First of all im not good english because my main language is italian anyway:
Im new i receiv this phone for a fews weeks ago my father gave me as gift from china.
Im using cyanogen mod 7 and i have kernel like 2.6.35.7-gedb93be [email protected] #1
The question is this: How i can update firmware automatic without doing so complicate and easy way to do??
I heard most people use SGH-I9100 and update with program Samsung Kies easy.
Well for this SGH-I777 cannot use kies and doesnt work either.
Any suggestion? Maybe a nice alternative for update in future?
Hope this information help a bit
Thank for support!
Alan
I'm pretty sure that's only possible if you have rom manager pro ...sort of , I'm pretty sure if you want to update you have to download and flash the update
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Kies + cm7 would never work anyway. Cm7 is an aosp rom and kies only works with Samsung builds.
Sent from my HTC PH39100
If you are trying to update CM7 to newer builds you can use rom manager paid app and have access to it. OR you can also download the newer CM7 updates from here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2att
If you are wanting to upgrade the stock samsung firmware then you will need to go back to stock samsung rom for kies to work I think.

Thanks for all guys i paid premium rom manager and there seems all ok!
Remain only a problem about NFC when i go setting wireless + NFC its show me grey out why? doesnt work?
NFC is not enabled yet on the AT&T version of this phone. Some developers have made progress in getting the phone to recognize the NFC chip, but no one has been able to enable full functionality of NFC.
Oh so i have to wait for next update version cyanogen mod for fix this problem? I hope so because need a lot nfc :s! thanks for quick reply u guys are great
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Right now, NFC working in CM7 is still quite a ways away... I have only succeeded in partial functionality with official Samsung firmware.
The problem is that the AOSP/CM7 Nfc.apk does NOT like our stock device's JNI libraries (crashfest) - but using the Nexus S JNI libs causes the behavior you describe.
Aosp? Ehm well im a noob lol i dont understand at all about technology especial telephone instead computer antway i try to learn as quick as i can :/

Learning
I hear you, man. After the last few years with iPhones, I am learning a ton since coming here.
AOSP is Android Open Source Project. It is often used to mean plain android without any 3rd party changes like HTC sense or Samsung TouchWiz.
Cyanogen builds their ROMs straight from AOSP. Other devs start with already modified versions. For example UnNamed and Serindipity are built off of the Samsung modified android that came on our phones.

Lol now understand clear thank a lot! Too bad that i couldnt use nfc right now....i wonderf when can be able to enable? :S any clues?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Rule number one of Cyanogen Mod is do not ask for dates. I would say that applies here too. Even if the devs can get NFC to work it is very unlikely we will be able to use google wallet, which is the big draw for a lot of people.

I knew some of what you were talking about, but I am a little unclear about the link between AOSP and stock Android. They don't actually put out anything that is usable by average consumers, right? Their output is solely for the dev community?

My New rooted phone
Hello, I am a newbie to this whole rooting thing. I just had my phone rooted with UnNamed ROM v2.2.1 so far the phone has been really fast and smooth. Its a nice clean setup. The big question is, now what? What should be my next step? Nothing big since I`m still learning. Maybe a theme? I not sure. Thanks for any input. Have a great night.
Do whatever you feel like doing, or leave it as it is if it works for you. That's the beauty of Android, you always have choices. Enjoy your phone, it's a beast.

Miui ICS on our phones? Possible or not?

The att s2 just got it's port of ICS with a Miui rom.
I know there are hardware differences between our phone and the att one but is it possible?

Of course it's possible, just depends if/when they get around to it.
It's only a half-assed "port" anyway as the full ICS AOSP source tree still hasn't been released and there's certainly no updated-for-ICS hardware drivers yet for pretty much anything other than the new Nexus.
but if they got it to work on thr att model what do we need to make it work on our phones?
or what is the hardware difference that makes that rom unusable on our phones?

Is it possible to use SGS2 ROMS with the Skyrocket?

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Nope, different hardware means you need different drivers, etc... to run it. The bootloaders are also different so flashing an I9100 rom onto your skyrocket will brick it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You'd best check the skyrocket development forums here on XDA. The best chance you have of getting what you want is if there's a SGS 2 ROM port there.. Good luck!

Developing ROMs?

Hi, I was interested in building an ICS ROM for the galaxy player 4.2. After compiling ICS from the source, what steps do you need to take to make it into a ROM?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I'm afraid it's not THAT simple. AFAIK, there is a lot of work to be done before a booting ICS can be achieved. If you have no prior experience in android ROM development, I don't think this is a task you should take up right now. ICS compiled from the AOSP will not work on the 4.2 without modification and an ICS kernel, both of which are far beyond my current technological skill. Also this should be in general. Yes, I know it IS development related, but this IS a development site. Questions belong in the general thread. Thanks.
Odp: Developing ROMs?
Well starting by practice is good way imo. I did so But wothout knowledge, you have to be extremely patient
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
I understand, maybe I can look at how it was achieved on the other players and it might be similar?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't look at the other players, as the 4.2 is pretty different from the 4 and 5. Try finding another Samsung product with similar hardware. Example: the galaxy player 5.0 is very similar to the SGS i9000 , Nexus S (crespo), and GTab p1000.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Okay, but I'm pretty sure the 4.2 is similar to nexus s?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Compare specs. Find out.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Odp: Developing ROMs?
by specs our devices are quite similar, by kernel etc. less but still similar.
I think that good and interesting way of learning is to add same/similar modifications as on crespo/aries and try to understand how does it accually work.
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
Thanks for the help guys. I'm quite busy at the moment catching up with school work, I'll see what I can do this weekend.
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Hell, the 4.2 might even get an official update. Unlikely, but possible. IDK if Samsung has made a statement about this, but it only came out last year. (I think)
I called Samsung and asked about official updates and they said the 4.2 won't be getting any because the specs aren't good enough....

Thats a lie. there was a device called the Galaxy Music that had an 800 mHz processor that got JB.
Samsung wont update the galaxy players because they are much cheaper compared to phones (take the s3 for example, it costs 700-800 bucks if you get it without a contract)
I'd suggest reading through the following threads if you haven't already. Then ask about the specific parts there you're not understanding.
[GUIDE] How to port ROMs to the Galaxy Players
[Guide]Rom Development for Dummies (and a few other things)
And I found this one that describes the complete process for the aospa rom. You should be able to adapt the details for whatever rom you're working on.
[GUIDE][AOSPA:v3.+] How to Compile AOSPA from Source : + Support and Maintenance
That won't work until there is a working ICS kernel though. And even after that is completed, work will need to be done on the ROM.
