MicroSD File System Formats? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I picked up a couple 32GB class 10 Samsung microsd cards and I was just curious. I know FAT32 has a 4GB or so file size limit.
Does anyone from experience know what filesystems Samsung stock firmware supports for file system types such as FAT32, NTFS, exFAT? Or possibly using a Linux based program to do EXT2 or EXT3 but I would need to be able to put files on it via a Windows PC.
Mainly for the reason that I want to be able to put my ripped movies onto the memory card and watch them on the phone. I usually save them in a MKV or AVI format.
- Dan

good question as i have the same card as you

If it is like GS2, it will only support FAT32 and EXT2/4. There is zero chance it will support either NTFS or exFAT.

I just formatted a 2gb spare card to NTFS and tried in my ics'd captivate. No luck. Looks like itll take some tweaking to suppurt it, even with ICS

It's not tweaking. You need the filesystem support from OS. NTFS is not free (need licensing fee) and much of its complex security stuff are not fit for non-Windows OS.
I can see exFAT could be supported down the road when Google feels like it. Or when large capacity microSDXC becomes more popular.

Please help!!!!!! what format is this??
Can someone please, please help... I can't figure out what format this is and it is driving me CRAZY!!! Thanks a buncch in advance!
EDIT: I think its ,mostly, JFIF but I cant even decode it with the proper tools. what am I missing??

I think if you want to know you at least need to post the hex output rather than text. Get a hex editor and go from there. I think there are bytes that specify FS type but converted to text just comes up as garbage characters.

windows 98/XP on PDA!!!!!

Seeing as that even the weakest PDA (like mine) runs a 200Mhz processor and the RAM isnt half bad. Would it be possible to run a stripped down version of XP or '98 on a PDA. I got the idea when I came across a compact usb version of XP. that runs straight out the flashdrive. Handy for recovery, etc. How big a leap would it be to port it to a PDA?
Edit: It works via emulation (slowly),work under way on an embedded version, but to keep us occupied in the meanwhile there a '95 and a '98 roms you can run from the storage card. Check post 21 (or thereabout)for instructions and files.
Coming across some interesting devices out there, if anybody has any detailed info please let me know. Link is HERE
I'm afraid it would be very big leap, as PDA processor is not x86 compatible, someone has to port it or create an emulator for it. And then new driver will be needed for the touch screen.
your 200 mhz cpu is able to emulate 386 sx 16(well, almost..) , and thats all about that...
no win lol.
Have you tried a little program called eXPerience? it'll be on google under 'Digital eXPerience' gives an XP look to your ppc, taskbar icons wallpaper etc ;-)

That's kind of cool actually. You could run windows 3.1(1) on it.
Supposedly you can run Windows 95/98 on a pocket pc. I never really had a good reason to try it.

I am not skilled enough to see through it - but it might be possible to do an XP on a PDA??

I think that the photos are only themes for windows mobile and you are able to put some shortcuts in pocketpc's "desktop" with wisbar advance desktop....
The start menu has been done with wisbar advance...
Nothing else...
Well - you might be right - or not. According to this: http://intimate.handhelds.org/screens.html you see and IPAQ running BOCHS - and it claims to be possible to run x86 OS...
I dont know if its true but I will try to digg deeper.
Lets seek the limits
Look at the picture....
It has been done with Wisbar Advance + Wisbar Advance Desktop......
Very Nice.....
Well, qemu is currently being ported to arm, and it's much faster than bochs, which is a bit outdated. It might not be very fast, but, who knows ?
Wait and see...

[GUIDE] Win 95/98/XP and Linux OS (Knoppix/Ubuntu etc) on Xperia S No root needed!!!

Yes ! Now you can run x86 based operating systems on your Xperia S. No root needed
IS A VIRTUAL MACHINE, DOESN'T TOUCH ANDROID
The windows 95/98 works great on my Xperia S
All credits to their respective developers.....
Instructions :
1.Download and install Bochs2_5_1.apk (stable but slower) or QEMU.apk (unstable but faster)
2.Download SDL(BOCHS).zip for Bochs2_5_1.apk and SDL(QEMU).zip for QEMU.apk and extract on root of sdcard , so path should be sdcard/SDL/*.*
3.Put a disk image of type ".img" of any operating system in SDL folder and rename it to "c.img" (tested : win 95/98/XP ----------------Linux OSs like Ubuntu/Knoppix/redhat etc can also be used)
4.here i uploaded an img of windows 98 http://www.mediafire.com/?ec76dg96qspyx5k (just change the extention from .mp3 to .zip, extract and here you go)
5.Run Bochs or LibSDL from appdrawer. Let it boot (takes few secs) and enjoy.
How to Create .IMG from .VHD disk image in Second Post
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions (BOCHS) :
- The screen works as touchpad to control the mouse cursor and volume up/down works as left/right click.
- You can also tap the screen to generate left click.(this does not work everytime)
- Back = BackSpace, Menu = Enter, left-upper corner click generates TAB
- left-lower corner click popups keyboard
( For a desktop like experience use this keyboard -> Hackers Keyboard, or a usb keyboard using the usb host cable)
-Create a folder called "HDD" on the root of your SDcard and put your softwares/files or anything in there. When you boot windows, then in "My Computer" you will see "d" drive which will have the "HDD" folder contents. So you can install/use them in Windows.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions (QEMU):
- The screen works as touchpad to control the mouse cursor.
- You can also tap the screen to generate left click (right click is not possible AFAIK) .
- Back = BackSpace, Holding Menu = popups keyboard
( For a desktop like experience use this keyboard -> Hackers Keyboard or a usb keyboard using the usb host cable )
- No custom files can be used as of now, will find a way and post here again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Some freeware disk images can be found on the next links (not sure if any of them will work as i have not tested , only win 95/98/XP are tested.)

Create a folder on the C drive and extract all the qemu from the archive there.
(Go to the folder in the console)
(hard way)
Win XP: Start> Run> cmd
Win 7: The push buttons Win + R, write cmd and click on OK
Writing in the console

Hold down Shift, click on the empty space of the open folder, right-click
In the menu click on "Open Command Window"
Create an image of your hard disk - write to the console
Code
qemu-img create-f raw disk.img 2000M

disk.img - the name of the hard disk
2000M - the size in megabytes (the size can be anything, if only Windows was placed, but just the 2000M).
Create (. Iso) image c installation disk Windows XP (look in Advanced) and rename it to image.iso
Copy it to the folder c: \ qemu
If the c: \ qemu disk image is the image of the hard drive then run QEMU - write to the console
Code
qemu.exe-m 1024-boot d-cdrom image.iso-hda disk.img
(Where)
1024-m - amount of RAM available to QEMU
-Boot d - to boot from cd-rom
-Cdrom image.iso - our installation CD
-Hda disk.img - hard disk image
(Install windows as usual)
Format to NTFS required (do not be lazy is a very fast)
Creating a Windows completed.
Disk.img take out of the c: \ qemu and copy the smart
(Now set up the Smart)
Download BOCHS for Android
Download the SDL: SDL.zip (47.85 KB) Number of downloads: 240
Installation:
Install apk
Unpack the archive in the SDL sdcard / SDL
disk.img move to the sdcard / SDL
(Edit file bochsrc.txt)
Neither of which do not touch, but here:
# What disk images will be used
# Floppya: 1_44 = W98RUS.img, status = inserted
change the name of the image as follows:
# What disk images will be used
# Floppya: 1_44 = disk.img, status = inserted
and here:
ata0-master: type = disk, path = "c.img"
change to:
ata0-master: type = disk, path = "disk.img"
All store and run Bochs
We look forward to and enjoy!

Not really. Different architectures, you can only emulate and not virtualize.

Nope. Even ARMv8 won't really be able to virtualize desktop CPUs. I've had a chance to play with a TI board and the thing is badass, but it doesn't have hardware virtualization.

So today, the 29th of April 2013, I rooted the phone, yea it worked, Success! ( I used Android Toolkit)
Later I accidentally hit the format Nand button. (Smart Phone flash tool)
My phone's dead, it won't even turn on, not even in to the boot screen by holding vol up + home + power.
I want to get this working again and have no idea where to start, if it was as easy and putting a ROM in the SD card and booting, it would've helped, but that's not the case.
I know the guys here get a heap of questions, but I've spent hours trying to figure out what to do, before I voiced my concern here.
I truly appreciate it,
Thanks
Dude, why would you format NAND? Lesson here is don't do things if you don't know what you're doing. There is most likely nothing you can do. You pretty much wiped the important partitions on your phone. I'll look into trying to help you later. Good luck

Okay, back again. Could you please link the utilities that you used, especially the one you used to wipe your NAND? I would like to inspect these utilities to see exactly what they did to your phone to find any leads.

SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1222.00 and I pressed the FORMAT button and selected the Nand. I didn't know doing that would screw it up.
So far I've found a few ROM's and Firmwares, but nothing loads, because I still have the Error: nand flash was not detected, upon doing the memory test
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/star-s7189/
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/star-s7189-2/
These packages seem to be incomplete, because I cant find any uboot or fat files to choose.

Hello, I also bought this model of smartphone and just yesterday I joined the same site that you described without being able to update. Anyway I wanted to say that to me also gives your same mistake "nand flash was not detected."
I wanted to ask 2 things:
1 The volume of the rear speakers is high? in mine, the sound is very low.
2 Have you tried to listen to music or watch movies or play something? when I do one of these things, my smartphone heats up a lot, consumes a lot of battery and after a while, I get a message of overheated battery. I state that I have the original rom without overclocking, so it is all original. I hope for a reply. Hello.

Xperia Tablet S Bricked and revived. Service tools obtained.

Hello all. After bricking my Xperia tablet S by the next method: rooted it, then install a soft called as I remember PLay help, or something like that, a soft that helped you make your device look like any other in Google play sao you can install all apps even if they aren't made for your device. everything was ok but when i restarted my tablet it wouldnt pass the sony logo and than black screen.
So I tryed all methods provided within this forum, but nothing worked.
So I decided to sent it to service. they realized it was a soft problem and charged me about 40 $ to repair.
every thing is great now, BUT I have found in the box when I have picked up my tablet from service a 2 gb sd card
i thought that was the sd card used to resoft my tablet, so I inserted the sd card in my tablet and rebooted while holding the vol plus button and it started to say something like: cold-boot linux kernel from sd card. i didnt want to break it again because i didnt have enough power and I restarted my tablet. it works ok.
I want to see what it is on that sd card and share this tool with you, but for this I need help from you to create an image or something like that of this sd card. I have an macbook pro with os x maverick.
Any Ideeas?
Can you upload the files in a zip file?

I have Sony Xperia Tablet S, which is the next generation of Sony Tablet S.
I have inserted the sd card and tried to boot but nothing happens. I can no longer acces the menu with Power+Vol UP or with Power +Vol UP+Vol Down, which I could before the service did the firmware upgrade. that is why is important this sd card, to see what it contains and how it works.
I apparently can't do nothing with it besides being stuck on screen with this text: Cold-boot Linux.kernel from sd-card.
Wow !
deltaztek thanks for sharing this with us , i think this maybe will be the solution to many bricked devices.
Cheers

Damn, this is cool stuff! Just what we needed, service to forgot recovery SD card inside debricked device! Let's see if we can learn how to use this, too bad I am having so little time nowadays.
Btw. what do you mean "I can no longer acces the menu with Power+Vol UP or with Power +Vol UP+Vol Down, which I could before the service did the firmware upgrade. that is why is important this sd card, to see what it contains and how it works." ?
Do you mean that you cannot anymore access recovery, with or without recovery SD-card?
- What happens without SD-card, does your tablet boot normally
- Without SD-card, what happens if you try to go to recovery when booting by Power+Vol?
- With SD-card what happens when you boot normally?
- With SD-card what happens when you try to get to recovery?
I will download image, but my tab is not with me this weekend, damn...
Do NOT let your OSX format the card This is great great stuff.

Oh and is the SD card itself ordinary generic SD card or is it some kind of Sony's special card or something?

Ok here is the deal :
After you burn the .img on the sd card the windows stops see the sd card due to the format , so i have to boot linux to see whats is inside sd card, but some people reported 3 partitions .... on uper posts.
Anyway when you boot the tablet with the SD card inside either you try to go to recovery automatically booting from sd card and writing on tablet : Cold-booting linux. kernel from sd card , but nothing happens , now if you remove the sd card and try to boot to recovery wokring as before. If you boot to recovery and after put the sd card can read the sd card from recovery but there is nothing to flash.
Any ideas?
Edit : Can you see mate whats on sd card after burning the .img ? Whats so big for 1.8 gb ?
Hmh. Sound like me that said SD do not contain zip file to flash from the recovery, instead tablet recognizes it as some kind of special Sony's maintenance card an boots directly Linux kernel from the card. If I am correct, this way you can recover device even if recovery itself has been corrupted.
But if there is nothing happening after "Cold-booting linux. kernel from sd card", it could be that some extra gear is required. In example serial cable through which you can run shell commands or perhaps ordinary USB cable but some kind of special software would be needed to upload new images to the device. This is just a quess though.
Need to check out that img and what's inside after I have some time. Let's hope it is not encrypted and all files inside can be read...

Filer are not encrypted and image contains 3 partitions, one of them contains a full system rot filesystem, and second one contains something similiar to first and third is empty.

That diag.init probably is being started on boot with service mode,
or should be initiated manually via running with shell.
Oh and there is SU binary already there
-----------------------
im thinking is it worth to replace system partition with nbx03 1st gen Tab S,
maybe we could use it on our devices also
-------------------------
there are some parametrs set in /property/ <<<<<<<<<< we could try to add "persist.service.adb.enable"
in order to get adb working

This looks like a really great tool but I'm having troubles with it.

Can you attach that image here, to take a look? It sounds like there is no ramdisk in it. There are some phones that doesn't have ramdisks in boot images.

Sure thing, just remove .zip from the file name, had to do that as it only allows 8Mb img uploads
I'm trying to edit the boot so that I might be able to make the external SD into the data drive, is this even possible or am I wasting my time?
Thanks!

Ok, I see... Your image is "lokified". In order to use my tool you need to "de-lokify" it first, then after modding you need to "re-lokify" it back. Some infos here and here. It may be many other infos but I didn't have time to do a full search; you have to do it for yourself.
Some LG and Samsung devices have that "Loki" thing and you need to deal with it. Maybe when I'll have a phone like that I'll make an automated process for it, but now I haven't and I can't work "in blind".
I don't know what to say about your last question... I'm not even sure what you're talking about.

Awesome, thanks!
basically, the LG Optimus F3 comes with too little memory built in, there's a program that mounts an external SD's second partition as a data folder, but even still it runs out of internal memory or won't install apps larger than the internal memory because the "System" partition still has little room.
so the goal was to edit the boot so it will boot using an external SD directly as the system drive, it would read it's maximum memory available as whatever the external SD's maximum is.
this would solve the problem, if it works, if not then it'll probably just brick the phone :good:
I just wanted to update and say thanks. This helped out great! I was able to successfully boot /data from my external SD card as desired, however, my card is only a class 2 so it won't be a good idea until I upgrade it to a class 10.
Lg Optimus F3 comes with very little internal storage, which was giving me a headache, so I wanted to make the phone boot using an external SD as the /data partition.
after following your tip, I unloki'd the boot image and used your Carliv Image Kitchen to extract the contents, edited the fstab and edited out the original code: "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/userdata /data" telling it to mount /data on the /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 instead.
after repacking and re-loking and flashing the .img it had some problems, for some reason it was just booting to a black screen, so I used dd from the team win terminal to copy the /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/userdata over to the /dev/block/mmcblk1p2, and it worked!
being a class 2, it booted slowly and responded slowly but works none the less.
to be sure there was no problem with partition size, being how I used dd to mirror userdata over to the sdcard, I ran gparted in linux and resized the partition smaller, then larger to full size (just in case)
thanks for your wonderful tool and for pointing me in the right direction.

As I already posted in recovery's thread, it will work with kitkat kernels. Some people port it to lollipop but I never recommended that.
So to answer clearly cm11 because cm12 means lollipop, or it will work with any other kitkat based ROM if your phone has any kitkat kernel released.
You need to ask the one who released that cm12 for your phone to provide a matching recovery along.
Now you probably need to reflash the phone with SPFlashTools.
ok thanks a whole lot but im having another issue the sd card is now only readable by my phone how do i go about copying a rom to it whenever i plug it into the pc it doesnt come up

Which chipset?
Hi there... I woul like to ask if this tool works for Helio x20 cpu's... (Mt6797 - Leagoo T10) because I'm trying to extract the stock recovery but having trouble with the ramdisk... It says "compression used unknown..." I've seen it mentioned in the discussion some times but the explanation was to use the 1. Metod ??? I'm using the windows 1.1 version and I really don't see any other method to use (start bat, r, 1 recovery.img, , 1 unpack image, error....) I'm just installing Ubuntu to see the difference but would be grateful for some advise... Thanks.
Since main Carlive Image Kitchen thread has been closed in 2017 all the util builds have been lost for some unknown reason. Dev claimed he have personal problems and adviced users to help each other.
I've found latest official version 1.3 builds and publish them here for practical and historic reasons. This util mentioned in a various manuals so people will look for it for a long time then. Old Linux modded version by yuweng is also added for completeness.

Furthermore user FOV5 @ 4pda.ru forums have modded latest 1.3 version a few times so I do publish here his latest modded version 1.5B3 (12-Jan-2018)
Changes history:
- v1.4: Support for some non-standard kernel images (e.g. LibreELEC and similar).
- v1.5B1:
- Removed 'Boot' and 'Recovery' prefixes from file names while unpacking Boot/Recovery images. This is due to ability to easily compare whole Boot and Recovery folders after unpacking.
- Added optional experimental AmLogic core unpacking. This could be helpful to patch storage media layout when device partition build into the core.
- v1.5B2: Fixed 32 bit app crash after core unpacking. A few other small non critical fixes.
- v1.5B3:
- New while core slitting, parameters like Name, Load Address and Entry Point are preserved.
- Fixed: New app will try to pack core only when all the 4 kernel parts are found in the unpacking folder. If core unpacking process some kind failed, one or more kernel.* files will be missing, so repack process will use original core instead of trying to assemble broken one.

If you have any questions related to this modded app version look for FOV5 user at 4pda.ru forums and ask him (I don't know does he speak any langs except Russian, online translators available anyway. There is also Russian numeric captcha problem for non-Russian speakers when loggin in to that forums, sorry guys). I do not often use this app and occasionally visit XDA, so I can't support this product in a professional manner. Help each other guys!
