Romanian characters in Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This has been bugging me for a while and looks like updates don't solve it.
Probably you know, probably you don't, in Romanian there are two characters (diacritics) that are causing problems in the IT world. I'm talking about ş and ţ that are written with cedilla instead of comma under (more details here and here).
Android seems to correctly display only cedilla-S, cedilla-T and comma-S. Comma-T is displayed as a square (on Maps, inside PowerAMP, etc). Looks like it's only a font problem as the songs are correctly submitted to last.fm. It happens both on Defy CM7.1 and on Wildfire original latest.
I've heard some time ago that it will be fixed in Gingerbread, but... looks like I'll have to change the fonts myself on my Defy.
Is there any other solution than changing the fonts?

Bump!
Nobody, nothing about the subject?

The correct (official) way of writing the Romanian characters is with a comma, not a cedilla.

Sent SMS showing squares at receiver end

I sent SMS which was something like three SMSs chained together in Finnish language (Scandic letters äö etc.) to my girlfriend, and she said that only the first sentence was clear text, the rest was squares. Her phone is some old Sony Ericsson non-smartphone.
I told her to send the message back to me, and weird enough, first sentence is nearly as I wrote it, the "" smiley at the end of the sentence was two squares. After the squares, there's a few Chinese or Japanese Kanji characters and then again square or two, then again Kanji characters until end of the message chain.
Anybody seen this kind of problem? I think this should be reported to HTC if not already, I just don't know if this problem can be reproduced otherwise than sending similar awfully cute message to someone
sounds like some weird issue with the character sets being used (UTF-8 or Unicode etc.)
Don't know of any way to check what is being used on android....

I would suggest that your first port of call would be to try to send similar messages to friends who are using more up to date devices. It is possible that it is the SE that is failing to interpret the message correctly, rather than an issue with the Hero per se.

Dave
Yes I have, and now that you mentioned it I double checked. I'm quite sure the problem is caused by having a letter with the tilde on top in the message instead of the proper åäö. This happens very easily, since the tilde versions are right next to correct ones on the popup lists of the touch keyboard and the difference on the fonts after typing is barely noticeable.
What I don't know is if those a the only problematic symbols and wheather the character encoding is screwed up on android, by the operator (elisa) or at the receiver phone (s40 I think). I just hope the next version of the HTC rom has Finnish language support so that it would be easier to type and avoid this.
For now, simply spell check you texting carefully before hitting send. Especially when sending to gf

Actually what I didn't mention was that there was one "õ" character in the first sentence just for the reason you mentioned. I'm constantly hitting those still after three weeks using Hero. It may indeed be the reason for this "Chinese" translator" feature!
Thanks for suggesting this, I'm also hoping that if the äö characters are not visible on the main keyboard view, they should at least be more accessible in the future for us Finns
Hello,
Same problem for me. This is a known issue with Android OS, there is many complaisn from all contries in Europe using any special characters like 'ê' in french. More information here:

Question about music on HD2

Alright, i got my Leo about a month ago, and I'm loving everything about it. No real problems so far (Good job HTC .[: ). Infact,.Im doing the thread on the Leo.
Anywho, in my music folder, i have quite a few japanese artists. there names and song titles are in Japanese charwcters. instead of the charscters coming up, I get those squares. Which makes it really complicated to know what is what. is there a way I can edit the names and song info. or, is there a way I make the actual japanese symbols appear instead of the squares.
Sorry, if this thread was reposted, I didnt see it if it was.
Please and Thankyuuu,
~Matt

Well, I am sure it is because the font required for those characters, is not on the phone, not sure how to get around that ....
Might be nice to know, as I have a few Anime on mine, I know could rename them, but I forget to before I sync then just don't bother ....

My HTC HD2 used to be able to display japanese characters, however since i flashed the ROM it's been unable to do so =( is it because of the radio or the change in ROM

Honeycomb keyboard predictive text only showing names...

Ran a search for this topic and found nothing.
I have a Honeycomb tablet (Lenovo IdeaPad K1) and the keyboard is set to show spelling correction suggestions (I'm a terrible speller) but its only showing names of people in my contacts, its not showing all the words that would be derivatives of whatever word I've started typing like my phone does.
What gives? Is there some setting buried somewhere I can't find to get it to work like the spelling correction I'm used to. they way its working now its basically useless.
Thanks.
bump, same "problem" here, anybody knows more on this?
I have the same problem on an LG V909. Please help!

Does anyone have the latest Swype beta?

It's available on the site, but it involves usernames, and giving my email... and I don't want to do that.
EDIT: I got it. But I need "ADB" or "root explorer" to remove all traces of the previous Swype installation or it won't install. Can anyone help? I am following the directions found here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t/434290-swype-keyboard-acts-up.html
I have always had to use Titanium Backup (rooted) to uninstall swype so that a new official beta would install. The new Swype no longer uses a separate installer and can be updated from inside the app itself so at least that's an improvement.
On the new beta Swype, the alt characters are less visible than they were in previous versions (like a poorly themed version) but my main problem is that it is not taking my system font as it is now supposed to do. The characters are too small and unchanging no matter which of my rom's (dlev on captivate) 20+ installed fonts I choose. Perhaps there is some font package I can install so swype will see them?
I would really like to just get a swype.apk themed like the previous version of official swype since the letters were a good size and font and the alt characters are clearly visible. And a swype.apk that has the licensing functions stripped so does not have problems every time I change the rom. I know xda cannot host these files, but can someone please tell me what google search string I can use to find one of these to download? It would be greatly appreciated.
If I can't get this, I will finally just give up on Swype and settle with Slideit. Swype has been a constant pita to me for over a year since every time I loaded a rom or the beta updated I have had to figure out how to uninstall the old version, resignon to swype, redownload, reinstall, etc. If it was not my favorite keyboard I would have never gone through the hassle. Why it can't be sold and distributed like a regular app in the market and easily skinnable I don't know - I would gladly pay $10 to avoid all the hassle.
I was using swype for about half a year and it was pain in the ass...for czech language swype is very stupid almost every second word is predicted wrong even with biggest option to predict right...and its very annoying to waiting for new version and installing through installer and blabla...as you said, i gladly pay for slideit (and i did) and im very happy with it. More smarter for my language and theme option is just great...
Why not register? What's the harm in that for an excellent app for free?

For english language its great app...but for language where you have lot of punctuation and lot of symbol letters which other languages dont have its pain in the ass...its always aimless and making lot of mistakes.

Found one by searching for "Swype_v3.23.apk" and it does not appear to have licensing problems. All is good once again.

Chinese text in caller id

Dear All,
Recently got a Chinese phone from the net running ICS. I set the language to English, but some cuneiform text appears below the name of the people calling me. Is there any way to fix this?

Other than a custom rom or knowing how to decompile the apps and edit out the coding, probably not. Only possible easy solution that might or might not (probably not...) would be to make sure the locale is set to an English speaking country using something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bruce.setlocale
Thanks.
I am not intimidated my code as such (fluent in c++) but it'll take some time to understand android... Any idea which app I should look at? considering android is open source, I can probably patch the change in, create a replacement app and see if that works...

It's most likely either in something like a LocationProvider.apk (/system/apps) or the phone/dialer apk. If you are rooted, I'd try and free the LocationProvider, apk and see if that doesn't help. Try the easy stuff first. But I'd poke around in a thread like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1891962 or something similar that deals with this idea on porting Chinese roms to English.
Or you could just be lazy and see if installing another Contact/Dialer app from the Play Store just circumvents the whole deal.
Already tried using a caller id app, its more of a hit and miss... I was wondering what would happen if I just happen to replace the apps you mentioned from those of stock android? does that make sense?
