I am getting a ReZound tomorrow and I am feeling a little strange about it now because of all the negative comments about the audio hissing problem.
So who actually has this problem and who doesn't. Do the poll.
Update: I got my RZ today and...NO HISSING !!!! I am so relieved.

Have it
Don't care because it only happens when there isn't music and when there isn't music I'm not listening

Maybe is all I can say.
Don't have it, never had it. If I ever did have it, I never noticed it. This is the greatest phone in the history of technology. lol
I've only noticed it on ics roms in between tracks or if no music is playing.

Before the OTA I could hear the cpu grinding or something IF I turned media volume all the way off and hit play. If the volume was up I did not hear it over the music. It was never a hiss or a squeal.
Since the OTA I do not hear it at all. And due to my work I have to be able to hear unwanted noise in tracks and remove it so I believe I would notice it.
To be honest, some of the descriptions of noise that I've seen posted I find hard to believe. Not trying to call anyone a liar or anything but that's how I feel when I read them, some of them seem exaggerated.
Also, keep in mind that the people that post on this forum are anal about their phones and those that have no problems don't generally go posting about that, so what seems like a lot of complaints about noise is really a much smaller percentage when you consider all the people who have a Rezound that never even visit a forum about the phone and those that do visit but don't post about the issue since they don't have it.

I had it, and it was bad.
The OTA radio fixed it entirely, which I do not understand at all.
Doesn't make any sense to me, but it's definitely gone. Boggles the brain.
I'd have bet anything that they were talking smack when they said they were going to fix it with software. I'd have lost.
the update didnt fix the hissing for I...
No hissing here.
I've never played music on my phone so I just put one MP3 on there and tried. It appears I dont have the his. It sounded pretty good.
for me it only hisses when its hooked up to my car via auxiliary cable and when no music is playing. when I'm just using headphones or the speaker i have no problems at all

Hello,
I just got my desire x. It is a good phone for the money.
But I have a problem with the phone speaker (front one) and headphones.
In both cases when sound is played I can hear on the background a constant hiss noise (static noise).
Is this normal to this phone or I got a defective one?
Before this phone I had LG P500 that also had this background hiss noise.
I don't have that sound, I think you got a wrong device? Or maybe it's the sound quality.
Sent from my HTC Desire X using xda premium
every time the speaker or the headphones get signal I heaer the hiss noise. it is a hardware problem.
when I searched on google I found out that one x user have the same problem.
how you can detect the hiss noise:
Play through the headphones a song and pause it, for a few seconds you should hear the hiss.
Anyone else?
I've noticed this noise too...
It seems to be a hardware issue, but since it's not very annoying, I don't plan (for the time being) on sending it for RMA.

Mine does the same thing; it's a bit disheartening to see my budget MP3 player outperform the Desire X on noise level and frequency response.

It's certainly not Desire X -specific; my previous phone (a ZTE Blade) had it too, albeit at a much, much lower level. My wife's Nook Tablet does it, too; apparently sound quality is allowed to slip on budget devices

Not desire x specific I think, mine is completely hiss-free ! Take it back to the store for a check I say
Recently got DX and even i have the hiss sound. When i play the song through any player and take the volume to zero, the hiss sound is there. And when i press stop, the hiss sound stays for 5 seconds every time then goes...
i dont think the issue is hardware related. at least lets hope a future update would solve the issue software wise..

this problem will probably annoy some people who are keen on every bit of treble sound and quality. this annoys me more cos i do electronics and know so much about sound and dB.
to offer some kind of comfort to those facing the problem watch this video. but it does not isolate the fact only some DX are having the problem. and to those that dont have the problem please watch this video around 3.27 and exactly at 3.30 you will hear the low hiss sound some of us are experiencing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLnuoQ6pIKk
Well I do wonder if the people whose DX don't seem to have this issue maybe are just listening for the wrong thing I must point out that I haven't used the shipped headphones yet; I've just used my regular headphones.
And before anyone goes off a tangent: I'm not an audiophile, far from it. My case is not made from piano or violin lacquer

absolutely. maybe those who dont think they have the problem should check out the youtube video i have posted and listen to the sound at time 3.27 and around 3.30 the hiss sound will be there...
the hardware or software problems seems inevitable for those who buy the first batch of a new phone...whoever the manufacturer is.

yeah man. the faint hiss sound (white noise actually) is there at volume level zero even. its much noticeable when we reduce the volume of a song to 0. but if u stop the sound suddenly while keeping your ear on the speaker piece...you will notice complete silence just after 4-5 seconds...before that you will hear something bzzzzz....
I just found out something weird.
When I listen to music with my hands free or an other pair of Sennheiser earphones, the hiss sound is something more than noticeable, even if I mute the sound while the music is playing on the background. Also, when talking on the phone (with or without earphones) I can still hear the sound. Just like it was mentioned on the previous posts.
But I tested it with a pair of headphones (AKG 172) that I use for my PC, and the sound was crystal clear! No hiss noise at all, no matter what I did. Listening to music, muting the sound (while mp3's still playing), talking to others on the phone. Everyone was just fine, no hiss noises or other disturbing stuff.

That's what I heard, takes a couple of seconds and then everything goes completely quiet. In my case, it's pretty faint though. I'm just wondering if the noise is present when playing music at any volume ? Maybe some people here can record of the headphone jack and check the clip in audio software lol (if anyone has time)
unfortunately the hiss noise is present even when playing music. I listened to a quiet passage and is there, it was not from the track. the hiss is also present during calls.
Anyhow the sound quality in desire x is poor and the beats logo is just marketing.

i checked my HD2 for the first time since i saw this topic and noticed this in my DX. to my surprise even the HD2 has the same symptoms and the white noise turns to complete silence just after 4-5 seconds. its given me some comfort actually
I'm new around here but I thought I'd weigh in with my findings on this (hi everyone!)
I just got a Desire X and notice the exact same "hissing" problem as described here, it is most noticable when using headphones but it happens when using the earpiece and speakerphone. Barley noticable when using speakerphone but it's still there.
I was curious so I pulled out my old Desire S and tried to reproduce it, the old model has no sign of it at all.
Interestingly enough I have a cheap-ish Toshiba laptop and it does the exact same thing when using headphones; play something at low volume and there is a hiss noise, hit mute and then the noise stops after a few seconds.
I have been in contact with HTC before I found this thread and asked them if this is a fault or something that all of the Desire X phones do, they responded with:
We appreciate your prompt reply. Please be advised that we based facts on what has been reported to us. We cannot attest to the authenticity of the different opinions and customers experiences that are found on different blog sites.
As of the current time, we are investigating the possible cause of this issue. If the problem persists, please send your device to your dealer to have it physically assessed.

I never mentioned anything about findings on the internet, i just stated the fault and asked if they all did it.
Does anyone here have a custom ROM on their DX and still have the same problem?
EDIT:
Also thought I'd mention that the hiss noise is the same volume regardless of the volume level, increasing the volume during a call or while listening to music does not make the hiss louder
Wow. What an attitude. Seems like someone is pissed at forums or blogs for finding faults that exists only . Talk about customer care!!! Jeez
As for nathb...thankx for posting their reply. Seems like they do read a lot around here for "speculations". Haha.

They did numerous times make a point of the fact that they are investigating the cause though!
Maybe that means a solution is in sight for DX (and oneX as well?) users. I am keeping my hopes up because I really like the phone otherwise.
However my knowledge of what causes these sort of problems leads me to think that it is hardware-based and the only way to fix it will probably result in a noticable drop in audio quality from the phone
Guys can anyone test the device with a pair of headphones, just as I mentioned six posts above?
I tested it again, but this time with my friend's headphones, and again, the sound was totally clear, with no hiss noise... I really find it strange.

what the heck is going on...
I've been using a Note 2 demo unit for the past two days and have noticed that during a call, and the other person is talking, I can hear a "hiss/white nose" around the voice in the earpiece speaker. But when the person isn't talking, there is no hiss. I tried this with several calls (and also 1-800 recordings) and can hear it for every call. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it is quite distracting.
On the GS3 is does have a slight hiss, but it is hardly noticeable. The Droid DNA doesn't have any hiss during calls.
Since I wasn't sure if it could just be an issue just this Note 2, I stopped by a store on my way home today and tried the Note 2 that was on display. It has the same hiss/white noise that I'm getting on my unit.
Has anyone else noticed this on their phone?
I'm thinking it may have to do with the Note 2 using P_Rev 6 and the EVRC-B Vocoder. In my area, the regular EVRC sounds better than EVRC-B, but I don't see any way of changing it on the Note 2. I've changed between the P_Rev and Vocoders on other phones by doing ##PROGRAM, but that command doesn't work on the Note 2.

I had the same problem on my first Note 2. Took back to Verizon and replacement had the same issue. Was going to get a third one but the CSR tried it out and heard the same thing on the 3rd one so just returned it all together. Awesome phone otherwise but I make a lot of calls in a quite office, and with no other sounds it was really annoying.
Here is another thread with same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021447
Really hope it is just a bad batch. I'm going to give it a few weeks and try another one.
I have the same issue, for what it's worth. However, I'm lucky enough to almost never use my phone to make phone calls so I can live with it.

I have it but don't mind it too much. Probably because it's better than the tinny distortion I had on the Thunderbolt! I've noticed the headphone jack must be better too. Much less hissing when listening to music with headphones...at least compared to the TB. I can't believe I had that TB for so long...so...painful...

Had a tb too. Held it today. . It's so bricklike in comparison! Not to mention the problems in function. Think I'm over the light hiss now. ..rarely have headphones in and not listening to music anyway so rarely have a chance v to notice it.

Does turning off noise reduction (menu during call) address this problem at all?
Just an update on my previous post. I made a couple somewhat long calls today and I did not hear the background noise on the other end the way I had in the early days of the phone. Either it is simply a sporadic issue or it has worked itself out somehow.
Sent from my SCH-I605
I don't think it's a noise reduction issue. With noise reduction on or off, Voicemail calls sounded perfect. No hiss or anything. And I am quite sure of what the hiss sounds like, so I know what to listen for.
I'm wondering if it's just a case of the person you're talking to having a crap phone that has outgoing issues. It doesn't do it when I call my brother on his Note 2, just some other people. Wierd.

So in the past two weeks since I posted about this, I've tried calling a few people and tested it out, and I hear it on every call.
When the person on the other end is quiet, there is no hiss in the Note 2's earpiece speaker. But when the person talks, you can hear the hiss "surround" each word.
I've also tried it with the noise reduction feature on and off, and it doesn't make any difference.
Hi,
Does it happen when using bluetooth?
Thanks,
Bryan
I hope it is software not hardware. Was thinking about getting a Note II but this flaw would render this phone unusable to me, I use my phone as a phone a lot.
Most of the time it happens during calls. I'll answer the phone and hear a slight high pitched squeal (typically fades into the background to where the phone is still usable) that can become screeching feedback if my hand covers the microphone just right. It's hurt my ear unexpectedly more than once.
Sometimes it will happen even when I'm not in a call.
I've experienced it on Linaro roms running CM9 and I think also CM10.
I installed a sense rom and haven't had the problem since.
Anyone else experiencing this?

How unfortunate. I really like AOSP, except this, and this is a dealbreaker. I can't stand listening to squealing every time I answer a call and always fearing getting blasted by loud feedback with the phone near my ear.

I'm not 100% sure about this but there may be a workaround or something if you feel like thread surfing a little bit. My phone has never been quite as extreme so I never really paid attention. Good Luck
Turn your earpiece volume down, that way it won't feed back through.
I get scratchy audio on CM during calls, but never had anything hurt my ear. Do you have any dsp manager or anything boosting the audio volume?
And yes, Sense has a noise canceler built into the dialer that works much better than AOSP, it's one of the tradeoffs atm.

Anyone else hear a faint popping sound after 2 seconds of any sound being played ? It sounds like the sound is from the speakers turning off.
Hey
My HTC One does this as well (started a thread about it just recently), and it was the first thing I noticed on the phone when using sound on the keyboard. Extremely annoying and seems to be a wide spread issue.
wide spread? where else have you heard of this problem? does it happen on the international version as well?
Wondering if i should return mine and get another.
Other users have been reporting the issue as well. I'm located in Canada, and members from the US have said their phones have the same problem.
Yea just read your post on the international forum, seem like a widespread issue. Well I hope its just software

I believe it is the software keeping the amp on for a bit too long. I would assume this will be fixed with a software update

Ah, I can hear it now. In Pandora as well. Personally it's of a low enough volume level on my device where I don't think I'll find it annoying, but I still hope it's software related. Also seems to not be effected by the volume level or beats being on.

I could verify, I too was getting that popping sound. It's one of the first things I've noticed as soon as I got the phone home. I'm not trying to be overly OCD cause overall I think this phone is perfect and has none of the other flaws and defect mention on this site.
But I thought I should mention I haven't been able to replicate the popping sound.

I noticed last night while using my phone in my quiet room that I too have the faint pop 3 seconds after a sound plays. I've found several threads on here and elsewhere relating to the HTC One and other phones having the same issue. It appears to be an OS issue rather than a specific phone or hardware issue. Some have explained that it's the amplifier shutting off after the sound has played. It's not a dealbreaker and definitely a first world problem, but this is my first Android phone after using only iPhones for the last 5 years and it is very annoying when you hear it and cant get rid of it. I also noticed this happens even if I have the sound completely off! Is this a fixable thing by google or a clever patcher?
Wow... I had never noticed this and if it weren't for this thread I probably wouldn't have. After a sound plays, it sounds like there is a sort of "static" (for lack of a better term) that plays until something shuts off. It's like on the old cassette players - the difference between the end of a tape that's playing versus having the player turned off. Weird. I really don't know what to make of it.
