I've been seeing "ksmd" in better battery stats as eating up a bunch of my battery, and also lots of dhd_wake locks. I've googled both, work very little to show for it. Any ideas? It's weird, running neutrino 2.2 for weeks work great battery life, then this started happening and almost tripled my idle battery drain

I cannot see what it is, but it IS our main source of drainage of battery.
I have read it has to due something about page file and kernel optimization for fetching memory thought. Lets try a Clem kernel and report back
Here, here. Bump on this I'm trying to get my phone into deep sleep mode, not a lot on the net about this process.
On random days i still get massive drain that I'm pretty sure is due to this 'dhd' process. its keeping my phone awake pretty much at all times.
yesterday i had great batt. life, and today, well, its like night and day...

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

Since you didn't seem to realize, I thought I'd tell you. This thread was 5 months old before you posted in it...
lol
I would like the communitys opinion on how to get better battery life on this device.
Currently running a build of CM9 Getting around 4-6 hours battery use.
I'd like your ROM suggestions/Setting suggestions to try get bettery battery life.
Id rather avoid juice defender as I seen no improvment on my last phone, and felt it just got in the way (Like turning of data at 10%)
Juice Defender is crap. No if's no but's.
Install BetterBatteryStats if you haven't already, this will help you identify any apps/processes that are stopping your phone from spending the majority of it's time sleeping when it's idle (which it should do). Definitely have a look at the BBS thread on here, plenty of tips/ideas on how to get more juice from every charge.
Yea just installed it, Not really clear at the moment, But I will have a look tonight see how its went.
Went I look at battery after say 4 hours my battery life has been 60% with screen taking up 20% but the Android OS normaly sitting at double that.
I've been documented on G+ with a few of us trying to get better battey life.
Let it run overnight/for a day or whatever period you're finding you're getting drain when you think you probably shouldn't be.
Defo have a look @ the BBS thread. Read the first 10/last 10 pages to get an idea of the sort of details you'll need to post in order for the guys who frequent the thread/help people out to maybe sort a few things for you.

Hi,
I installed Gummy 1.2.0 on my vibrant. The first day or two I was getting amazing battery life. For instance with light-medium use, 30% of the battery was gone in 12+ hours, I was amazed. When I was getting this type of battery life Android system was using about 6-7%.
I noticed that as time passed, the battery life started getting worse and worse. I noticed that the Android System was eating up more and more battery even when it was supposed to be in deep sleep. Now Android System is using almost 40%
Has anyone else had the same experience? Great battery life changing to mediocre battery life in a couple of days.
Please advise.
Thanks!!!
I suggest you get Betterbatterystats and that way you can see exactly what is causing the problem. It is available in the market, but there is a free version here in post 2. IIRC the AOS taking so much of your battery life is bc of some errant process that is constantly drawing/polling on the system and causing the dismally high % of use. Find the app, fix it and your problem will be solved.
I've been using the latest gingerbread builds and I'm having great battery life, But I notice when I use AOKP or any kind of ICS rom my battery life isnt so great..
Is there a specific kernel you people are using? and What kernel settings are working the best for you?
Thanks!

Good news that you are not alone. Based on my premature calculation, only 10 out of 100 (that's 10% ) ICS ROM users have good - great battery life, meaning the rest is having worse. Mine is falling into that group. I never have great battery, only so-so and below average.
Also as Nick has mentioned, asking for which best is a NO NO here.
One might be good for me, doesn't mean it will be good for you and vice versa.
Try them all and pick one that best suite for you.
My 2 cents......I know you have read this several times - but battery life is really dependent on a lot of factors - your AT&T signal, rogue apps, data sync frequency, CPU governor etc. etc.
read Entropy's excelled thread on battery drain on this forum.
i tried out a few GB roms over the last few weeks and really did not notice any battery improvement over ICS.
Currently running cMIUI with xxkernel and it is really working out great as in the battery easily lasts for the whole day.
I remember when I was on stock GB I could go upto 2 days on single charge - but that may be due to the battery being brand new. I have read that the battery in SGS2 really degrades fast
I have 2% drain per hour when doing absolutely nothing, screen off, wifi off, gps off during 8 hours overnite.
While someone has reported having only 2% or 3% drain over 8 hours overnite.

Have you tried using "Better Batter Stats" to see what is causing the drain?
I have been using AOKP since Task brought it to us and I average 1% every two hours over nite.
Do you use the Facebook app? That sucker is hungry for your juice.

I got BBS v1.7 for a while, that was absolutely no help.
I installed BBS 1.8 for about a week. Based on their info, I got the "multipdp" along with some other things (such wake-lock) cranked up big time.
I read the Entropy thread, not much help.
Note: Wifi is off.
Maybe 3G/H+ keep toggling for sync process?
I do use facebook! haha. and I havent used better battery stats

I'd also recommend using CPU Spy in conjunction with Better Battery Stats to see if the phone is able to enter deep sleep.
I don't get as good as you. . .I average about 1% or less per hour overnight. But that's with wifi on, periodic syncing of 7 accounts, scheduled backups and cache cleaning going on.

My understanding is multipdp will show when apps are waking the radio to use cell data - each wake instance results in a minimum of 6 seconds of wakelock. Switching to wifi when you are idle "should" eliminate this wakelock.
I could be wrong here...dig into the known battery drainers thread from around the time the first ICS roms were being tried on the i777. There was some discussion of it...it is a renamed version of some other wakelock in GB.

That's what I said, "maybe 3G/H+ toggling".
I believed that if I left wifi on overnite, do nothing, I still had 2% drain per hour.
Let me completely turn off data tonite and see how thing goes.
errrrr I have a huge problem with my battery. I've been testing various ICS roms and kernels(aokp, foxhound, serendipidity, fluxxi Kernel, siyah 3.4.3.,Neak) and all of them with the exception of serendipity w/siyah kernel, drain my battery real fast.
Not really sure what the problem is but when I look at what's been using the battery its most of the time either screen (which is understandable) and android os? I went to bed last night leaving my phone at 100% and woke up to find it at 52%. When I looked at what was using the battery it displayed, 93% android os and only 3% cell standby??(btw Foxhound ICS, Siyah Kernel) Maybe I have to many things updating/syncing?
When I first got my phone, 2-3% battery drain overnight was one of the things that amazed me about stock gingerbread on the i777.
I've flashed alot of roms since then, and so far, no ROM can even touch that stat.
Hello everyone,
I've been following these forums every now and then and was very helpful when I encounter some minor problems so far.
But lately I start having a very strange problem on my mom's phone which is a Samsung Galaxy Win (i8552- stock rom- android 4.1.2) and couldn't really find a decent solution or a good explanation so far. So I decided to ask you guys.
The problem is phone is having a bit poor bettery life overall, especially while in idle. I found out most of the times it is losing 2-3% battery per hour while idling (i.e overnight). Sometimes it's slightly more 1% per hour and sometimes between 0.5-1% (which sounds more normal).
While in idle usually Androis OS seems eating up the battery around 50-60%. I disabled most of the notifications, most of the sync options (especially google ones), all kinds of screen sounds, facebook update intervals, uninstalled Avast and also disabled the location access. But these changes didn't really give a noticable difference. Battery drain inconsistency was still there.
After I noticed this strange battery drain I decided to digging it up a bit more and installed GSM Battery and wakelock detector.
Firs that I noticed in GSM battery is that the phone is awake for like 1.5 hours out of 7-8 hours of overnight idling. And Android OS kernel seemed responsible for this. But couldn't really get more clues.
Then I found more clues on the culprit in Wakelock Detector under "kernel wakelocks" tab. Which is vbus_wake_lock wakelock.
WD shows vbus_wake_lock is awake for almost an hour after the last charge, which was 7 hours ago.
After I found this I googled around a bit but couldn't really found a useful explanation except it might be caused by an apple charger. But I know that mom's using the original samsung charger.
I tried rebooting to see if it helps. It's been almost 4 hours now, phone lost around 2% battery which seems ok-ish but the vbus_wake_lock is still there with 25 minutes of awake.
So any idea. What should I do to hunt this wakelock down?
I don't really want to make her worried about her phone though, she seems happy with it, since she is playing some games and charging it every day so not really having a battery issues. But I know that there's something wrong here and I want to fix it.
So I desperately need your helps guys.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry for my English btw, as it's not my native.
