Has anyone gotten their Tablet S to connect to WiFi via an ad hoc connection? I found this in the Market ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher but don't know if it works with our Murata WiFi module.
I did try the wpa_supplicant hack, but afterward I was only able to see ad hoc connections. Actually connecting to them failed each time.
I tried wifiAdHocEnabler from the market, same result, i can see the adhoc networks now but it keeps on obtaining IP address on Sony tab S when I try to connect
I tried it on my desire hd, it worked (connected to the adhoc) but no internet, I am still trying to figure out how to solve it
Hi,
This was already discuss here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290313&highlight=ad+hoc
I was able to connect my tablet to my android phone internet
Thanks rimsilva for pointing out that post
the issue is still there, I can see the adhoc and the tab keeps trying to obtain IP address
I can use my iphone hotspot to connect my tablet to internet, simple and easy

Have you tried busibox and wifiadhocenabler in the tablet.
I had the same issue with a specific rom in my android phone, the wifi tether was running but my laptop was always obtaining IP address.
In your phone you are using native tether or external application? Please try wireless tether or wifi tether beta (look in Google)
I am using htc P3600 WM6 (Trinity) as wifi hotspot with WMWifiRouter
I can detect it using other windows mobile 6 device and I can surf internet on other WM6 easily. This is why I guess the issue is in android (Sony S & htc Desire HD 2.3.3 Leedroid)
& yes I tried the wifiadhoc enabler and after trying it only i was able to detect the hotspot but I couldn't connect (obtaining IP)
I tried the adb method, root explorer method, Xoom files, Nook files all are giving same result (obtaining IP)
Sorry guys, I'm confused as to why it sounds so complicated.
I have no problem connecting my new unrooted tablet s to wifi using my iphone hotspot or connecting to wifi at Mcdonald, Starbuck or other government building or libraries.
I don't need any app at all.

Look that we're talking about different things, that may cause the connection problem.
My experience is with Android --> Android connection. I had no success with MIUI .35 Kernel in my Ideos, but with CM7 and now Aurora ICS works perfect.
I thought SudaDreamS was trying the same but no, he is on WM6 and maybe is limitation between both systems.
Now you are talking about iOS and routers....
SudaDreamS look at this thread:

Thanks again rimsilva,
well both links didn't help much
I tried to use a static IP to overcome (obtaining IP address issue)
The great news is .. I was able to connect but no internet surfing on the tab yet and on the other wm6 as well, there was no surfing
anyhow, I'm still trying
hope some1 will suggest some solution or help by thinking with me

You can't tether to ad-hoc then, anyhow you might tether to access points
I managed to connect by removing the security of the network, speed is fine, it works perfectly now, since I'll be using it on the go, I wont need the security that much + the WMWifirouter shows how many devices are connected, so it's gives partial sense of security
Thanks to rimsilva for trying to help

Holy crap! I did the same thing and it worked. Can't believe I didn't try that before. I'm using Connectify-Lite on my laptop in Afghanistan and it was driving me nuts to not be able to connect my Tablet S.
hi all
i hit a wierd issue with adhoc p2p on my tablet S. my tablet is rooted and i have reference to all the available HC adhoc wpa_supplicant binary available out there..
scenario with adhoc connections setup on Win7 works fine(static IP setup). im able to ping the wifi ip of my Win7 from tablet S.
However, it failed to talk to talk to my adhoc device "OBDKey WLAN". It(tablet S) will see the adhoc ssid and connects to it(static ip setup). but it will goes into connect/disconnect loops. I ran a terminal to constantly ping my device adhoc IP but its always 'host unreachable'. Im constantly seeing errors :
I/wpa_supplicant( 2932): CTRL-EVENT-DRIVER-STATE HANGED
V/WifiMonitor( 155): Event [CTRL-EVENT-DRIVER-STATE HANGED]
ip route shows the correct network routing for network 192.168.0.0/16
netcfg shows my wlan0 is up and running with the static IP.
wpa logs that its able to connect to the adhoc ssid too.
(attached is the log of the occurance describe above.)
I did make sure its not the adhoc device faulty by testing with my HTC phoen. I was able to connect to my adhoc device using my HTC DHD (rooted with LeeDroid) and ping both ways.
Is there any kind souls who can point me to the right direction to solve this? am running out of ideas.

Ok, i have resolved my issue above. Even thou i was using a adhoc enabled wpa_supplicant, my adhoc wifi device is have constant disconnecting upon connecting and with Xoom adhoc HC built wpa_supplicant adhoc enabled, i get the above wifi errors (hung state) from wpa_supplicant.
After spending much time on it, i discover that my tablet S is doing wireless b,g,N. Looking further it seems my device only does a,b,g. Digged the whole /system for wifi related things and managed to find out some info in wmiconfig and wlan_tool.
So in wlan_tool, there is a commented line :
#WMODE="bg"
uncomment the above line will make your wifi to only communicate in b or g mode. And viola... problem solved. Connections remains strong and i do not face any d/c on my adhoc wifi connection to my device.
how to add ad hoc wifi capability to S
O.k., big newb here. I just read up on lots of threads on how to make the tablet S work with ad hoc wifi (I have a verizon thunderbolt). but, everything is way over my head.
Question, does the tablet S have to be rooted to enable it to work on ad hoc wifi?
I think all the forums and threads that I have read indicate that to be true. Obvious next question would be how...
Thanks in advance.
Yes, you have to have your tablet rooted to try any of the ad hoc solutions.

Here is where to begin...Tablet S root solution
Thanks. I'll start there.
No need to modify wpa_supplicant binary
I changed data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf instead of wpa_supplicant.
Step1:First i scanned my adhoc network using Wifi Manager. It shows adhoc networks. I ignored it's warning and tried to connect. It'll fail.No problem! We now have the adhoc network listed in wpa_supplicant.conf.
Note: you can skip this step if you know how to edit wpa_supplicant.conf manually or if your device already lists adhoc networks on scanning.
Step2: You'll need to root your device if you're doing this through your device itself. If you use adb you may not need to root your device.(I had root access by default through adb. So rooting the device wasn't necessary for me). If you're using pc(windows or linux), i recommend Android Commander.
Pull and/or edit data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. Add the following line
ap_scan=2
Find line like
network={
ssid="your adhoc name"
bssid=*some value*
.
.
}
Delete bssid line.
Add/Change the following
scan_ssid=1
priority=1
mode=1
Push back/save the modified file.
chown ownership back to system.wifi. Type the following in adb
#chown system.wifi data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Advantage: Safer than modifying system/etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant binary. Saves you the trouble of compiling modified wpa_supplicant or finding a compiled one for your platform.
Drawback: This is just a temporary solution. You'll have to repeat this process for every new adhoc network as it doesn't enable adhoc forever. It is good for connecting to your home network or other know networks, but if you want to connect to any adhoc network you scan, then this is not your method. Because, wpa_supplicant.conf will be overwritten every time you scan a new network.

I start wifi tether for root users on my G1.
I connect to it from my netbook.
Problem:
I don't see it in the list of wifi networks on my dell streak.
I cannot connect to the G1 wifi tether from my dell streak.
I am baffled.
I don't know where to start to trouble shoot this.
How Can I be writing this from my windows 7 netbook on the G1 wifi tether, but I can't connect to it on my streak.
The streak has no sim card in it right now.
I've got the same issue with Wireless Tether App.
Streak (unrooted 2.2) can't see the SSID broadcasting from a Moto Bravo (rooted 2.1). Ipod Itouch sees and connects fine.
I also tried Barnacle tether to no avail.
Any other suggestions?
Check that the source of the wifi network is not using a channel that the Streak does not support or isn't using. Go to wifi settings and then tap Menu->Advanced and select Regulatory domain. I believe that AT&T locked Streaks only work on channels 1-11.
Just a random thought.
Thanks for the reply.
I don't see the REGULATORY domain option after ADVANCED.
All there is : WIFI Sleep policy, Mac addrss, IP settings. etc.

What country/carrier are you in/on?
For instance the AT&T Streaks are, I believe, limited to channels 1-11, so check the device you are connecting to make sure it's not using a channel your Streak can;t see.
I'm from the U.S.
I followed through with your steps instead, failed to comprehend the channels reference.
Anyway, yes I did gothrough the different channels of the host phone. 1, 10,9,8,7,6, and 5. I stopped there. SHould I proceed?
Here's some info on WiFi channels
Since the US normally only uses channels 1-11 I thought that your issue might be that the device you are trying to see was using channel 12-14, which would prevent you from connecting. If you have confirmed that the device is using a channel from 1-11 then that's not the issue.
Try setting up the device that is acting as the access point with a different type of security and make sure that it is broadcasting the SSID.
You might try WiFi Analyzer from the market and see if it sees the access point.
Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
I don't understand why Streak would not see the SSID when the ITOUCH and computer can.
I even tried running the Wireless Tether App by way of Blutetooth, and the STREAK won't even see it.
I don't have my GSM card in the Streak, but that would not be an issue would it?
The STREAK detects and runs off of my home WIFI fine with no GSM card.
I'm stumped.
Anyone else running a different Tether App besides Wireles Tether and Barnacle that the STREAK can run off of?
This is the info I got from running Wifi Analyzer:
HOME WIFI:
"LateRain",00:1e:e5:a0:45:cb,[WPA-PSK-TKIP+CCMP][WPA2-PSK-TKIP+CCMP],2422 MHz,Channel 3,-66 dBm
PHONE HOST tether:
"Ness",02:00:00:8e:1f:7d,[IBSS],2417 MHz,Channel 2,-27 dBm
I have no idea waht that means.
I tried connecting to the "NESS" SSID via Wifi analyzer and it won't let me, gives me error "ADHOC not available for Android platform yet".
??

Andoid does not support ad hoc networks yet. there are mods yopu can make to do this. It is included on StreakDroid 1.8.1.
Search the forum and you will find more info on ad hoc networks.
Thanks, without being a total drain.. I did do some reasearch on Ad Hoc too.
Thanks a bunch, I'll look into mods, and the app you referred to.
I too am having this same issue with an Eris phone and Dell S7.
My wife has the Incredible and the S7 sees her wifi "3G Hot Spot" just fine.
I also for the sake of getting connected tried a Blutooth PAN and that failed.
Is there a similar method or application for a rooted android as there is for the Incredibe? If this can be duplicated then problem solved.
Until yesterday I have been successful in connecting to various WiFi hot spots, now I have to use a static IP to connect to the very same two WiFi hot spots. Using dynamic addressing my tablet cycles "authenticating, obtaining IP address etc." and never successfully connects. When I use static IP, the connection is instanteneous. I have tried recycled power to one of the WiFi hotspots without any change. Also, I have been successful in connecting another device to the WiFi router successfully suggesting the problem is with my tablet. The table otherwise works fine.
Has anyone else encountered this?
Lost DHCP over WiFi
I just found the following (timely) posting forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/18708-dhcp-timeout-over-wifi and will investigate whether that would be cause of my recent problem since I had just downloaded another version of busybox.
I have the same issue but from makin my laptop the hotspot n connecting tab to that, but I use Connectify for the hotspot and itworks with connecting, just not all the time.
When it doesn't, have to forget the connection then re-connect, usually fixes it. I don't think its ur tablet though, ive experienced this with every rom I've tried(tnt stock, tntlite 4.25, vegan froyo and ginger experimental)
Hope this helps
No it does not help since your problem does not resemble mine.
Problem solved after updating busybox to working version. Apparently a version of busybox lacked certain programs needed by the DHCP client.
More info on updating busybox please?

Hello
I have installed OpenVPN and its logging on to the vpn and is visible on the network list BUT I dont get any connection to another client in the vpn. I tried to ping another client from my SGS2 and from a client to the SGS2 but its always a timeout. I tried it with the phone and serveral wireless networks.
So I think it could be a routing issue but I dont have a clue how to see if thats really the problem and if its true how to fix it. I read some other posts and maybe it could also be a tun.ko problem but the SGS2 with 2.3.3 should already have installed it on the software, so I'm not sure how to see if thats ok. The Busybox is installed at /system/xbin. So does anybody have an idea how to find out whats actually the problem and how to fix this?
Thanks for your help!
Manolo
It's not clear to me if you tried connecting through your mobile data plan. Did you also tried that?
What is the IP that you are getting when your are connected to the VPN?
If it something like 192.168.1.* Then that's could be your problem. If the WIFI your are on, also gives you an ip adress as 192.168.1.* then that causes the problem. Either change the ip range of your network to 192.168.10* (just an example) or the ip range of you VPN.
ps can you post your VPN server settings?
Do you mean my own ip or the ip that i have in the vpn?
my own edge telekom ip is 10.219.127.35 and my internal vpn ip is 10.10.0.22
I can't post my vpn server settings because i got some key files for the vpn.
If you have installed installed this .zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16182571#post16182571
Then all you need to do is download openvpn settings from the market. And run in.
If you already did these steps, then the problem lies probably with your server and I need the server config. I don't need the keys of course
Thx!
How does this update work? I see no instructions on the post. Is it just to copy on the root folder?
Ah yes... I found how it goes and its working perfectly!
Thx a lot!
Hi, guys, here's my problem.
My Galaxy S2 using my own WiFi is unable to retrieve some content from web. This content is:
apps icons in Android Market,
Picasa images,
Accuweather forecasts
and some others.
Other devices using the same WiFi has no problems with it. S2 switched to other ISP than my WiFI also has no problems with it.
While trying to narrow possible causes I've picked an example image, which is problematic to my S2+WiFI combination:
https://lh3.ggpht.com/NpoJbnyQbI1kEIlrWhP_t7lj9lN519RkPB3mxQS2z6pTFjh01R3ISeyYnj4AccBSsQ=w788 (an icon of an app from Adroid Maret, remove space from url).
It won't open on my phone using WiFi, so I checked host availability. I've run on my phone following command:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ ping lh3.ggpht.com
ping: unknown host lh3.ggpht.com
But on my PC using the very same WiFi:
Code:
C:\Users\Grzegorz>ping lh3.ggpht.com
Badanie photos-ugc.l.google.com [173.194.70.132] z 32 bajtami danych:
Odpowiedź z 173.194.70.132: bajtów=32 czas=27ms TTL=47
Odpowiedź z 173.194.70.132: bajtów=32 czas=25ms TTL=47
I'm stuck, what should I do now?
Have you any ad blockers or DNS stuff running ???
jje
Nope, it's clean Android 4.0.3.
Echo request for lh3.ggpht.com on your phone does not work. On your PC you get a response from 173.194.70.132. Just to make sure your problem is related to DNS (and not to some lower service): did you try to ping the IP address 173.194.70.132 from your phone? Do you get a response?
Yes, the host is reachable from phone using IP dot address, only name resolving does not work.
Ok, looks definitely like some DNS problem. As you already confirmed that your hosts file is fine the only thing I can imagine is your phone using some 'wrong' DNS server for address lookup.
To make (almost) sure you use a set of different DNS servers you could disconnect your phone from the wifi and enable a 3G data connection. Make absolutely sure you are not connected to your wifi. Now again run 'ping lh3.ggpht.com'; do you get a response?
Yes, that is the case.
Another weird thing is that phone on 3G resolves lh3.ggpht.com as 173.194.35.139, while PC on WiFi as 209.85.148.132. My 'hosts' file contains only localhost reference.
When I switch to WiFi while pinging that host, pings keep successful, unless I restart terminal session — after that I get 'unknown host' message.
Is there DNS configuration in Android somewhere?
OK, it seems I fixed it.
My WiFi works in a bigger subnet and hides all connected WiFi devices as as single computer.
I've installed on my Phone app called Set DNS from former Android Market, which allowed me to change both primary and secondary DNS. Initally both addresses were pointing to WiFi router itself which seems to work fine for my PC. I've changed it to DNSes of that bigger subnet I'm connected to. And it did the trick. Hopefully it won't mess settings for other WiFis I use to connect.
Thanks for showing me right direction!

Logcat will help you.
If you are on linux:
Code:
adb logcat -d > /tmp/logcat.txt
grep -i 'wifi\|wpa' /tmp/logcat.txt
On windows, use "adb logcat" saving the output to a text file, like my example above. Try to find strings containing wifi and wpa (or wpa_supplicant).
This way you will know what is really happening.

huh can you explain it a little more better, where i have to write this above? i am on windows...on my atrix i have terminal emuluator, have i there to write this?
There have been several reports over the months of people having trouble connecting to one manufacturers routers..........may be Belkin, but a cannot remember for sure. Also, if you are trying to connect to wireless N at 5GHz, try wireless G instead. I believe the Atrix will not connect at 5GHz, and the symptoms of trying to do so are exactly what you describe. If I try to connect to my router on the 5GHz wireless N band I get the same results as you. One other possibility is the password length. I have read that you should keep it under 8 characters with the Atrix, so maybe try shortening the password, or try connecting unsecured to test this theory out. I am using an Asus RT-N66U right now, but have previously used 2 Netgear routers without issue also. My work uses Cisco repeaters and routers and I have no issues there either.
