I've ruined my Grandma's Galaxy Ace - tried to get it network unlocked and must have made a mistake because now it crashes whenever you try to make or receive calls. It's likely because I mounted /dev/block/bml5 (efs) to get the unlock code and forgot to dismount - who knows.
It currently has v2.3.4 and if I give it back to the Orange shop they hopefully will flash it with 2.3.4 and all will hopefully be well.
Now v2.3 has a problem that the apps that make it easier to answer calls (e.g. Full Screen Caller Pro) don't work (as 2.3 puts restrictions) but on v2.2 they.
Since I'm hoping that flashing the phone will repair the crashing issues - I might as well flash it to v2.2 as my Grandma hates the default call answering thing (have to drag an icon from left to right - it's too fiddly) and then I can install these apps that provide an easier way to answer calls.
So, where would I get a generic v2.2 ROM for Galaxy Ace for the UK and will flashing solve the crashing issue? (I've Googled but some of the pages don't make it clear if it's made for UK phones etc.)

I didn't understand your reply - are you saying that:
I have to take it in to to a Orange Service Centre (it's an Orange-branded phone) to get it unlocked? The method I found online used gave me the unlock code, but appears to have ruined the phone as I probably made a mistake.
Or
Are you saying that to recover from this restarting-whenever-I-make-calls problem, I need to take it in to a service centre i.e. reflashing it myself won't repair it?
Many thanks
PS. I'm actually quite good technically and understand linux file systems etc so I'm not scared of flashing as long as I have the patience not to make mistakes.
i can give you the link to a froyo stock rom if you like ... have you already try to flash it with a stock GB ?

Yes please, stock Froyo that will be good for a UK phone
I don't want to flash GB as it has restrictions on certain apps that make it easier to answer phone calls.
I want to configure it so that my Grandma doesn't have to slide the green icon to the left - just press an answer button. I think this is only possible with Froyo/2.2 as apps that override the answer screen work whereas with GB/2.3 they don't.
I´ve send you a PM with the link

educate me please - why is that?
what would the service centre do - surely it's only a software problem? or is it that they reflash parts that are normally locked down?

first thing I want to tell that I had decided to change my rom from odex to deodex one..
I had looking for a good one amd I found that Gangsbread is the best..but it doesn't work with my rom which is JPKF2 so that I had to change it to XXKH3 " a raw rom".. so I downloaded it and tried to flash it on my phone but it didn't work..
and I tried to switch my GS2 on but it doesn't work
I've downloaded the JPKF3 raw rom and tried to flash it.. and this what happened to me every time I tried to did it "the pics is within the attached files"~_~
I did with a different roms wuth a count of 33 but it doesn't success.. *_*
and now I have a message on my GS2 screen saying that..“Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies & try again”
please can I do anything to fix it ?
thanks for your time
You've put kernel on bootloader option?
You were supposed to download a .tar file, select it on PDA and flash, no re-partition

I have an S3 i9305 4g lte version, on orange network uk. I rooted the phone using CWM. Then installed the Panorama ROM, using the guide on here. And yes i have used the search function, followed pretty much every guide there is. Still no solution. Im beginning to think my phone will forever be caught up with this problem
on top of there being no service. The phone itself has started to randomly turn off, and also lags!
I regret rooting lol just wasn't meant to be.
Can anyone help me? Literally, I would be so grateful if someone can actually help me fix this problem. I basically just want my network service back, regardless of unrooting or not.
Thanks a million in advance!

Spoon feeding is not allowed here.
If you're a Android n00b and want to know how to root or flash custom or stock roms I suggest you do some reading/research. We have plenty of Q&A and guides that cover this.
Asking "how do I root" is a silly question to ask because its already been asked and answered so just look/read.
If you lost somehow your IMEI number(0 under *#06#), rooting the device won't help.
First, before any movement, backup your data and then restore defaults. Maybe it's some king of bug?
Settings->backup &restore -> restore defaults, erase memory.

If the phone is still under warrenty - get it replaced/fixed for free where you bought it from.

If you don't get it, there isn't anything further anyone here can do to help you. Send it to a Samsung service centre/authorised repairer, or ask local mobile repair shops. This is not something you're going to fix yourself.

CMD is command line - like MSDOS or Linux terminal. ADB is not something that you'll get by asking questions and getting answers, you need to read about it and understand it. It will take you a couple of days to figure it out.
I'd try going to several different phone shops/labs. Hopefully they will diagnose the problem without replacing the entire PCB. It's worth a shot.
If every shop says that you must replace the board, ask around. Maybe one of your friends knows someone who is able to fix this.
From what you described it seems like water damage or other hardware fault.

If you want anyone to -try to- help you get your phone back you should at least consider searching for easy questions.
Check what ROM you are on and perform a search at xda or google (or both).
Now, are you sure warranty is voided? if it was 2 years you still got time....If you root your devices, warranty will be off the table for you.
Seat back and get you sh*t together, take a long breath and then report back to see what's up.

Hi all,
I have exactly the same issue on my Galaxy S2 on Vodaphone in the UK. It's out of warranty and not rooted. I did an IOS upgrade to ICS v4.0.3 and at that point it shows no signal and the IMEI no. is blank after dialing *#06#. Somehow it has lost/corrupted the IMEI no. during the upgrade.
Is the only way to recover the IMEI no. to root the phone? Or is there another method?
Thanks all!
An iOS upgrade ? No wonder you borked your IMEI
Go to Samfirmware, find the latest stock rom for your carrier/country. Flash it with Odin. How ? Search/read/learn. If you're lucky, yours is a case where the IMEI disappearing is a transient thing & doing a 'good' flash of stock (as opposed to the update that obviously barfed in some way - I presume you're talking about an OTA update as opposed to something you did manually ?) might well fix the problem. We've seen a number of similar problems on here lately.
If you're unlucky, you're SOOL & it ain't coming back. Rooting it isn't going to magically fix it unless you have an EFS backup, which you won't have if you're someone who's never rooted their phone. Take it to a local mobile repair shop, they may be able to help. A Samsung service centre/authorised repairer will also fix it for you regardless of the warranty status, they'll just charge you more than a local mobile shop who isn't an authorised Samsung repairer will, likely.
Thank you for your response! I took the S2 to a phone repair shop, the guy tried flashing it back to stock IOS but this failed. He ended up replacing the motherboard, all fine now. Would like to find out the safest way to upgrade the IOS to Jelly Bean now, it's currently running Gingerbread v2.3.3. Any advice appreciated, in the meantime will do some reading up.

if its GT-I9100 then you can update easily ,but if its gt-i9100G or smoething else,im nt sure i cn help .. u might have to do some readings ..
The model is GT-I9100, I managed to successfully upgrade the IOS to 4.1.2 using Kies. Perhaps I should've done that first time around instead of selecting Settings-About Device-Software Update over Wifi - which resulted in the phone losing it's IMEI no.
Many thanks for the replies!
okay dude .. enjoy your JB ...
My IMEI was 353************** and changed to 0499901********. So I am not able to make any phone calls right now.
I have no idea how it happened. I am flashing ROMS for 8 months. I have no EFS backup because i didn't know how much important it was [I AM REALLY STUPID ]
I know 049999**** is a test imei. In every forum there is a solution for SGS / SGSII. There are things for SGS3 but threads are very old like 5-6 months ago and they don't work...
I've tried installing softwares called NsPro or Samsung Tools. But I know they need some special stuffs and they are not free..
I've tried stock roms, modified Roms, kernels, modems after this happened.(Yesterday i was on 4.2.2 now 4.0.4)
So i gave up
Is there any suggestions? Any help way ? Because if I can't find any solution until tomorrow, I'll give the phone to technical service and i don't like it.
Last time I gave my phone to the service it took 25 days and they changed the motherboard with new IMEI (Nokia C7)
And the most important question : Can I update my phone if technical service fixes it? Android 4.2.2 original firmware or 4.3 , 5.0 in the future?
Sorry for bad English.I live in Turkey,Istanbul if there is anyone who can contact me.
Thanks!

Good your issue was resolved. It is always bettwe to keep a back up of efs folder. nv_data_bin would have corrupted which restored on another flash of ROM and you are lucky. Most of the time flashing an unsuitable kernel would lead to this problem.

I'm sure there are many things you may not know the answer too I'm simply asking for advice not looking for a keyboard junkie to protest!
So I will look to learn Odin flash.
I have downloaded latest Odin
I have downloaded kites for samsung.
Where is the best place to get the software I need to put on phone(rom kernel )

Goto Settings/more settings/mobile networks, check that your APN is configured correctly for your network provider. You can normally find the correct settings on their website or via Google. Probably best to reboot afterwards
