hi all, just joined, recently bought an ace, i have rooted it and now its slower than ever, i have heard about custom roms but to be honest i still have no clue whats what, so thought id join and ask people who know what they are talking about, few things, 1.do all custom roms come in english , 2. which one is best, 3. how do i install it.
i know these are probably stupid questions but i am seriously no good at this stuff, any help , advice or recommendations on a rom would be great , cheers all , alyn.
p.s. i have searched forums and read few things but still no clue what im doing hence the noob post.

Hi! I'm a noob too... but i read some very good posts, they are pinned.
1- You can change the language in first boot after install, all come in english, but theres a lot of languages available, i'm brazillian and i use portuguese
2- The best rom is the rom that you like more, i think... I always use Jusada's roms, now i'm using Carbon Sunday by Jusada, this is a very fast rom, and i like style too, and well, its android... we can do whatever we want to adjust de style.....
3- Read this Tutorial
i prefer this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392029
if you like galaxy sII
is stock
and has a lot of tweaks and ported stuff
also 14 toggle mod

cheers guys , so basically after ive rooted my phone(which is already done) to install a custom rom its the same process as rooting it, according to kies i have newest firmware , so i think its just a case of picking a rom now, i cant seem to get odin as the linnks dont work for me will this matter , i dont have android sdk i juat have kies, but from what ive seen thats all i need to put custom rom on my phone, alyn.
if i have newest firmware and phone is rooted , can i just pick a rom and install it using same method i did for rooting, i have odin 4.38 now , dont understand what clockwork mod is, but will same method as rooting work or will it damage my phone ,i have kies installed , cheers.
ignore last post re-reading hubix's guide i know its the same process now , just confused me to start because of all the software listed at beginning, now all i need is a rom to use, are there any threads with images of the screen i found a few but none that really caught my eye as yet. also what does hubix mean by 'flash custom recovery' do i need to do this before a put a new rom on my phone, cheers, alyn.

Yeah you need cwm to flash any custom rom, on developers forum are CWM 5 and CWM 4 (cwm 5 is the recovery almost every developer is using to flash his roms now) (epic bad english sry XD)
right ive installed cwm 5 , but no idea what the following means to test cwm as i cant find any of the mentioned commands on the screen
Flash Custom Recovery:
1) Push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.img to your device using "adb push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img /tmp/" command
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Login to your device over "adb shell"
5) Mount /system using "mount /dev/block/stl12 /system" command
6) Flash CWM recovery using "flash_image recoveryonly /tmp/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img" command
7) Umount /system using "umount /system" command
8) Reboot your device using "reboot recovery" command to test your new CWM recovery
9) Reboot your device
If you have already installed CWM, reboot your phone holding down the Power Button and Home Button until CWM Screen appear
If you do this and doenst show the CWM screen, with some commands, try re-install CWM, the right way now....
I cant see where you can have difficult in Tutorial... But if you still having doubts, just post again...

I'm on Vodafone in the UK and I've tried most of the ROMs and they have been fine. Unlocking just stops you using a non-Vodafone SIM. If you flash a custom ROM it will unlock itself.

The best Custom ROM is CyanogenMod.
If you don't like it, then stick to stock 2.3.6..
Stock 2.3.6's battery life is IMPRESSIVE!
Back to the topic, root doesn't have any effects on performance!

Hey guys!I'm still quite a newbie in flashing a ROM.Quick question, can anyone upload a YouTube video of their own teaching how to flash a ROM or anyone has any link to any video that teaches how to flash a ROM? I'm pretty confused by the part of nandroid backup and custom recovery and stuff like that... help anyone??? Thanks!
I'd like to endorse this point too..some one kind enough to post a video? I have a rooted OO but flashing is a bit too confusing. A video will be of great help. I am dying to run megatron! THANKS

Yup me too!Someone help please!!!
Its not that hard when you read everything. The problem is that there are many topics spread around that you have to know... I cant make a video but there is a very helpful sticky made by The_ERROR that could clear things up a bit. Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900905
To break it down for you, flashing a custom ROM involves:
1. rooting your device (z4root or superoneclick)
2. installing drellisdee's custom recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483)
3. making a nand backup with the custom recovery so you will always have a failsafe method of bringing your phone back to original settings
4. flashing the custom ROM of your choice using the custom recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=839)
Instructions get a little confusing at the start but as long as you follow them correctly, there wont be any problems. Its the custom recovery installing that seems daunting to newbies (it was to me...) since there are commands you have to type that you might not be familiar with. Also, each ROM has their own set of instructions so make sure to read them before trying.
Keep reading and asking ^__^
Wow. Simple, elegant, and noob friendly. Thanks so much!!!

The first line says terminal or some shell, but where do i get terminal? I am a recently unnoobed linux noob, so im ok with what to do after terminal installation.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
You get it from the Market app, search for "Android Terminal Emulator", it's developed by Jack Palevich.
Terminal Emulator is the way to go if you are patient and do not have easy access to a PC like me ^_^
It's a chore typing the commands but it works so much simpler. The phone accesses itself and all you will need is the correct files on your sd card and the correct commands.
Hey thanksI have the terminal emulator already! But how do I do a nandroid backup? And can I do custom recovery through terminal emulator?
Install the custom recovery first using Terminal Emulator. Then when that's done, turn the phone off and turn it on recovery mode (hold Home, volume down, and power button until the LG screen)
If you have installed it correctly, the screen will go to the custom recovery menu where you can do all sorts of fun stuff. If you have not installed it correctly, I THINK those button combos will initiate a factory reset of your phone.
It is the custom recovery that allows you to make backups and flash custom ROMs.
Thank you for all the advice guys! Installed drellisdee's custom recovery n thn flashed Mik_os's gingerbread 2.3.3 cyanogenMod7 port..everything was straightforward once I spent some time reading the threads..Mik_os's beta 5 runs like a charm...Life's Good!!!

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had

I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.
thanx guys

Hey there everybody,
I'm new on the forums and i just got my samsung i5500 a few days ago, it came with 2.2 froyo by default.
Considering i have loads of questions I'll try to be brief, I'm trying to get cyanogenmod on my phone but the tutorial i found there seemed to be quite lacking in detail considering this is my first time using android, so my questions are:
1. what exactly do i need to do/install on my phone before trying to get the cyanogenmod on there ? ( in the respective order please)
2. do i need to root my phone ?
3. when i tried to root my phone using universal androot 1.6.2 beta 5 i got an error "Failed ! No ~~~ Fu goo ~~~" why am i getting this error and how do i fix it ? (the log says access denied in several places)
4. do i need to install odin on my pc to install clockwork mod considering i don't have the clockwork mod ? if yes, where do i get odin from and do i need a specific odin for my galaxy 5 ?
5. do i need the rom manager ?
6. where do i get cyanogen mod files ?
7. how do i do a wipe data/factory reset ?
8. do i need to install 2.3.7 gingerbread before installing the mod ? if so, how ?
Please excuse my noobish questions but i'm completely new at this and terrified of damaging my phone, thanks for your time and attention.

1. Install 'clockworkmod recovery'
2. Yes
3. Did that for me, but pressing the root button again, before shutting app, worked
4. No, you can install clockworkmod through the app 'ROM Manager' found in the market, be sure to click our phone model though!
5. For installing clockworkmod, and if you get premium, downloading the latest version of cyanogen
6. Through premium app 'ROM Manager', or go to the rom manager website and find the files on there.
7. You have that option when you are booted into recovery mode (used for installing roms)
8. If I understood your question right, cyanogen rom is gingerbread 2.3.7 so installing that is all you have to do
I was exactly the same as you when I first did it, kept asking questions and was nervous, but if you follow the instructions, you can't go wrong

Do you have the latest version of it? Or,
have you tried any other apps? E.g 'z4root' or 'superoneclickroot'
4. When did you try it? Its only recently been added. And I would root first, just to make sure that's not stopping it
6. I havnt personally used it, but id ask that in the dedicated cyanogen port thread in development, they'll be able to help you more
7. Through rom manager, after you have installed the clockworkmod

1. what exactly do i need to do/install on my phone before trying to get the cyanogenmod on there ? ( in the respective order please) Root your phone using Universal Androot- might take a few tries- just keep trying, flash your phone with Clockwork Mod v4 via Odin (or Rom Manager), put the 3 latest CM7 files on your devices SD card, go into recovery mode on your device, then install the files in the specific order (Follow the simple instructions on the official I5500 CM7 thread located under the Development section of our phones forum)

I used Odin to flash Clockworkmod on my phone but I think you can do it via Rom Manager now, not too sure but the ODIN method was pretty simple, plug your phone into computer, put your phone into download mode and follow the 'One Package' method and then start the process.
5. do i need the rom manager ? I didn't need Rom Manager when I flashed CM7 to my phone, but CM7 automatically puts RomManager on your device.

If your phone is loaded with Froyo 2.2.2 you will have to downgrade to 2.2.1 as the exploit used by superoneclick ect to allow root access was fixed in the latest Froyo release. Just follow the threads for upgrading. Good luck!

Birdmanul, I have had the same problems trying to root my I5500. Could you PLEASE give me a run down of the program you used or what EXACTLY you did to root your phone? I have tried w/all one click root programs w/o success and would really appreciate your insight. Thank you in advance for your help.

I'd say stay away from doing much to your phone if it's confusing. Bricking a device is no fun I hear.

Which recovery are you trying to install?
The best experience will be to flash Romracer's recovery through fastboot. If you are unlocked and follow the instructions, you should not have a problem.
Yeah tried it but it takes so long I don't think it works

the cmw doesn't install via fastboot is der another way pls help i want to install that neutrino 2.8 heard a lot about it
Taken from tayshun12's great guide here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 .
My suggestion is in red. If you are already correcting the name then sorry and good luck.
Proper Recovery:
1. After your bootloader unlocked go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
2. Scroll down to where it says "ALL USERS" and download your favourite colour. (NOT THE ZIP VERSION) Rename the file to recovery-atrix5.img instead of recovery-some-color-atrix5Place it in the motounlock folder that you have on your desktop.
3. Press the windows key + R on your computer, type cmd and press enter
4. A Command prompt will open. type cd C:\users\YOURNAME\desktop\motounlock press 'enter'
5. type "fastboot devices" Press Enter.
5b. type "fastboot erase recovery" Press Enter.
5c. type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-atrix5.img" Press Enter. Be certain that you have renamed the file to recovery-atrix5.img instead of recovery-some-color-atrix5
Wait for the command prompt to say : "writing 'recovery'... OKAY ['The amount of seconds it took here']"
5d.type "fastboot reboot"
DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS PART: After the install of RomRacers recovery boot up your phone. Open up your favourite file browser (I used Astro file manager to do this ) and navigate to /system/etc/ and delete the file called 'install-recovery.sh'
You will be set 100% !

problem flashing recovery
I had a similar problem flashing recovery with fastboot method. It would flash the recovery successfully in seconds, but it would not load recovery properly. It didn't matter if i tried to enter it from key combination or Rom Manager the phone would just load the recovery image and not the recovery options.
I was somewhat successful with the procedure found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 sticky by Tayshun12. flashed latest clockwork mod touch recovery 5.8.1.8 by following procedure at the end of the first post. Delete install-recovery.sh from both locations,(don't forget to backup file first) it is the same file in both locations. Install Rom Manager from Google play after removing files. Flashed touch recovery with the option in rom manager (paid versions of rom manager and touch through play store) after that the recovery works perfectly. I didn't mind having to pay for them to work properly. Good luck, pm me if you need to and I will try to help.

It should have taken only seconds to install. In the command you have to type the name of the recovery your installing. I personally use touch recovery on the atrix. But you have to check the name of the file, it has to be the same name as your command. I suggest you read the instructions carefully again, there should not be any problems.
i can read i tried it on my atrix and it didnt't its a t-mobile uk so am confused
So i still cant get my phone rooted.
I have searches all over this forum and find many threads. I have tried many of them and nothing works. For normal people like me mutch of the words and explanations developers give are to complex to understand. I hardly know what a bootloader is, or a cmw file. And even a harder time finding out where and whitch files to download.
Is there not anybody out there who can give a step by step walktrough with links to what to download and how to use it for my kind of version.
I just want to root my darn phone to let Cyanogenmod take it over and make it happy again Any Mod suggestion would be great to.
Ps: i easly rooted and use Cyanogenmod 10 on my Galaxy Tab 2 so i'm not totally retarded
You rooted a galaxy but dont know what cmw is?
Anyway, all instructions are found in the sticky threads. More especially, read the second sticky thread in that section. All instructions ahve been given in exact detail there...
If you are usnsure what the words mean I suggest you read up on them as if you dont know what to do you can damage your phone.
As i said i'm kina a noob. And instead of just confusing me more why don't you or anybody else just try to link me to a guide that works.. As i said i have tried many of the guides in sticky treads and some links there are dead and others dont work.
I have updated to latest ICS and heard that i should be carefull so i dont brick my phon..as the reason i try to get help here. I found a easy guide for my tab where there was a walktrough wit links to the software i needed to downmload and use. And that is what i need here too.
So instead of complaining about how unknowledge i am cant i just get some help instead???
If you would tell us what you tried and where you stuck, maybe someone could help you.
Sticky thread in general section have valid links, as far as I know.

Y dont u unlock bootloader or install CWM and get CM9 or CM10 installed instead of rooting and then flashing CM?
By the way CWM helps u to easily flash ROMS and take nandroid backups and restore them.
So i can Just unlock bootloader and use av rom without rotting at all? This would be great because i only wanted to root it to use rom's on it.
Feel like a kid with a new toy now. Gona run home and try it asap
Some ROM's(like CM,AOKP,AOSP...) require custom kernel.
Some ROM's(mostly, stock based) can work on locked bootloader.
Most(99%) of ROM's are already prerooted.
To install any custom rom, you need CWM, to get CWM you ether need to have root and after that install CWM, or you can flash custom kernel with (in 99% of them) already included CWM.
So for us mortals the problem is still on. Tried to open the bootloader with sony's own tool, but when i turn of my phone and connect usb to get to bootloader it does not findt any drivers.. Even though i downloaded it.
I just want C-mod 10 on my phone and that's it. So how do i flash the custom kernel when i ned cmw to even get it rooted? Sorry but i guess i'm a big noob at this.
Are you on XP?
if yes,
Try to install the drivers on Safe Mode and Plug your mobile while pressing Menu key.
It will install the drivers.
I'm on Windows 7. Acording to the tutorials i found when i plug my phone to usb there should come up a message that says "could not install drivers, and from there i can find them manually.. But no such message comes up and there is nothing in device manager either.
I'm totally lost here. Have tried to root my phone before so maby some old drivers are the reason for this?

So now is the question what next to get my cyanogenmod on my phone.. Am a little scared because i heard that the version i hvae can easily be bricked.
Any ideas.?
Just install custom rom using cwm and dont forget to backup first your current rom using cwm. Later if got any problem and u can just restore it back.
