Can't Edit Files (Text Editor) - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Hi all,
I can't edit the text files on my Mini...I have tried every idea and cannot edit a file...I'm trying to disable auto-brightness. On my old 2010 Mini the option comes up immediately - edit in text editor, but not in this one. How are you guys doing it?

What textfiles do you try to edit?
It could be a permission problem.
I use the text editor built in "ES File Explorer", I am very happy with it.
Sometimes I also use the terminal emulator and "vi".

Thanks for the tip, I'll give file explorer a go.
I am trying to edit hw_config.so
The flashtool in this area that people use allows you to edit a file in your phone and thankfully I did it. But as you know you need an app on your phone to do that too. Root explorer won't allow me. I've mounted, changed permissions to all types and no luck.

New Official ROM update PREVENT removing HTC_CM_Guardian

Hi all,
In my previous Sprint Mogul ROM, I can safely remove HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and sddaemon.exe by going to \Windows\Startup folder. This is per recommendation from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334536&highlight=htc_cm_guardian.exe
These 2 files created havoc in my previous ROM, including slow connection and short battery life.
However, with the new Official Sprint ROM (which enable GPS) function, I can NO longer remove it because:
1) It's no longer shown in \Windows\Startup folder
2) It's not shown anywhere in the Registry
3) Moving the file to a temp folder (Storage Card) somehow recreate the file.
Any suggestion?
What if when you moved the file to the temp folder, you created a folder or blank text file in the /Windows directory with the same name as the guardian.exe? that might prevent it from recreating itself and starting up.
Or try copying/pasting a blank text file of the same name into /Windows and overwrite the exe

I did, but I found out the file is a ROM file, so it's protected. I can copy to a Storage Card, but deleting or replacing it with a bogus file (I created a text file with the same .exe name) will give error that the file is protected.
In the past, I leave the actual .exe alone but just removed the startup shortcut in \Windows\startup. But I could not find any references in the Startup folder or Registry on how the file is started.

I've tried Resco Explorer and it won't allow for a deletion of the .exe either.
So the file cannot be deleted. Anyone know how the file is loaded everytime the device reboot? note that it's NOT loaded from \Windows\Startup nor registry.
I was wondering the same thing. It doesn't even show up as a running task or service...
I just made a new connection and set that as my new default one as I was tired of it removing my DNS entries.
are u sure it boots up or the could have renamed it
Yes, it started by itself. I reset my device and using Memaid and SKTool I can see it starting again.

I can confirm that this works. Using resco explorer I changed the attributes from a read only file and then copied a text file overtop.

i tried to change the attributes using total commander and it just resets the settings right back after saving. still stuck...
ok i even tried using resco explorer. it says that its a file in the rom and it cant be deleted. and that was after changing the attributes as well. both times i also killed the running process. are you using the new rom?

I believe the key here is that he 'copied a text file overtop'.
I don't think you can change attributes or delete a rom file, just copy over it.

OK, I didn't bother checking the attributes after the change... Was up past 4 and was trying to remove both the Guardian and ssdaemon. After a success with copy over one I decided to rush and just repeat exactly what I did to the other.
I am using a1jatt's ROM -- a cleaned (not quite enough.. ) ROM of the Sprint release with Telus settings.
i have this rom and ive tried everything that everyone said to work and NOTHING is working. i need help. i dont put another rom on here. i just want the internet and mms working. im using metro pcs on a htc touch pro.

hard reset (so you'll lose everything) then DO NOT let customizations run!!!!
it won't be installed. if you need something else from the extROm you can enable it and selectively install cabs.

[Request] Root explorer

What's the best file manager with root enabled? (possibly free )
Sent from my MB525
for me is file expert
File Expert does the job for me
I like Astro. It has all the usual tools of any file manager, and it remembers the settings of each folder like windows explorer in PC.
No root mode for both of them or do I need glasses?
Sent from my MB525
Ooops sorry FE doesn't have root access as yet.
You can probably manually give Astro root permissions, but it does not ask for them by itself. Instead, it just states 'insufficient permissions'.
I myself prefer Root Explorer. It's basic, but because of that, not cluttered with features I do not need in a file manager.
I've been using Super Manager.
The free version gives you root explorer capabilities, including R/W.
Some features are locked down unless you pay, such as the ability to directly open/edit files in the root explorer function but a quick'n'dirty workaround is to copy the file in question to the SD card, edit it to your hearts content and paste it back over the original.
Same as above - super manager seems ok

I've just started using super manager as i needed to instal apps to the system/app file and couldn't do it with File Expert. Quite like SM now and it does what i need.
Root explorer is great! I use the paid version for all my tasks, but I will try super manager as it seems to have many followers!
i also use root explorer, try the free version, i went for the paid one. it's very easy too use
I have tried out a couple(ES, FE Astro) but I really like Super Manager after having used it.
The amount of options and tweaks and the free root access combined with a solid ui makes it an easy choice for me.
For those that dont know.
ES File Explorer (free) works just fine with root. Here is a trick. I just stumbled upon it while trying to mess with it.
Settings -> Home Directory
change home directory to be "\" instead of "\sdcard\"...
waaalaa, it's there....i was able to edit a file, didnt try saving it.
give it a shot and let us know..

If you tried saving it, you'd have seen ESFE pop up an error message. Its root capabilities only work on a couple of custom ROMs.
the best file manager is the ADB shell
but super manager is OK too.

[Q] Root Explorer Issue

Anyone else have issues using Root Explorer to edit files??
Trying to modify the /system/build.prop file in order to see if I can get the Netflix app to work. I purchased Root Explorer so I can edit some lines of the file. For some reason, I cannot save any of the changes. I tried on other files, and as soon as I leave and come back...the file goes back to its original state.
I've tried: copy, pasting and deleting files works. I am ensuring that I have Mount R/W selected to enable writing. I contacted Root Manager support and they suggested I try changing the permissions on the folder “/data/data/com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer/files” to 777. No luck.
I have also attempted using the free file manager app "ES File Explorer" without any luck.
Try using Ghost Commander. Take some time to get used to it but its a solid app.

[Q] Root Explorer can't save Edits to Files

Using Root Explorer, haven't been able to Edit files and save them. For example, when I want to edit build.prop root explorer will not save the changes. Yes system is mounted RW, I can edit it in another file manager then copy the file into the right place and it saves. Any ideas, this has been a issue since I got my SGSII regardless of the rom on it.
Can you edit other files? I just long-clicked on a .txt file and selected Open in Text Editor. Changed a number and then hit menu > save changes. Saved no problem and I do this quite a bit.
I gave up on root explorer and moved on to root browser. It does everything, and on the xda forums, you can make it pro for free. Search for it, you will be pleased.

How to Change Galaxy S3 Touch Sound

This requires root!
The sounds (by default) are stored in /system/media/audio/ui/
!NOTE: This is for system/OS sounds. Notifications etc are not stored here!
Screen touch sound is "TW_Touch.ogg" and back and menu button sounds are "S_HW_Touch.ogg"
If you would like to change the sound to something else, find a mp3 or something that you would like to use then convert it to a .ogg format.
Can be done on this website: htt$p://audio.on$line-convert.$com/convert-to-ogg *Remove $ symbols from URL
Then rename your new .ogg to either "TW_Touch.ogg" or "S_HW_Touch.ogg" dependent on what sound you would like to change.
Place the .ogg file on your sd card and move it the mentioned directory and overwrite (delete) the original .ogg file (backup first).
Then remember to set the permissions of the .ogg file to "rw-r--r--" and make sure it is named correctly, it is case sensitive.
Reboot system and enjoy your new sounds :good:
I tried everything that you said and it doesn't work for me. When i try to move/overwrite the file it tells me "Cannot copy or move file". When i try to delete the orginal file first it tells me "Warning - Could not delete". I am on stock rom and rooted. When i try to change permissions to the original files it gives me error "unable to chmod /system/media/...bla bla". What to do?
Ok. I got it. Thanks for everything!! Thumbs up!

Your root has failed, download root checker to see.
If it fails you will need to re-root with CF-Root.
Very Awesome. Thanks for the help.
I am running into an issue. My phone has been verified as rooted by rootchecker. The only way I can see the root directory on the phone is with Astro File Manager. Once in the correct folder, I can see the TW_TOUCH.OGG file and have a replacement. However I can't write to the folder. I can't even rename the original. Checking the properties of the file I don't see any notations that the file or folder are write protected. I assume the entire drive is per se with the exception of the \SDCARD directory.
Is there a better tool for doing all this? I'd like to have something I can use from a PC as well.
Thanks,
Karl
Use Super Manager or Android Commander .
jje
First you need to Root.
There are good guides around here.
I'd recommend ES File Explorer
Download it then
Open ES File Explorer
Menu > Settings > Root settings.
Check Root Explorer
Click Grant when SU popup appears.
Check Up to Root
and Check Mount File System.
Now it will copy succesfully to the system folder.
Slightly easier
No need to do renaming. Save desired oggs to your ext sd card.
Use Root Browser (ES doesnt seem to go to system no matter)
Use Root Browser. Go to your ext sd card. Long press on the desired .ogg. Copy it.
navigate to the folder l /system/media/audio/ui/ as instructed above.
Click paste. If your file is named correctly it will ask 'replace?' click yes. Do the same for the other file.
Reboot. You have to reboot. How it still plays water droplets before rebooting Idk. But reboot and you back to clicky goodness. (who thought of that water droplet. Chinese water torture.)
Edit: I attached the two files. Change from .txt to .ogg.
operation failed?
