I have a Samsung Vibrant. I had installed Assassins Creed, NOVA, Geocaching app, did the GPS fix from the secret screen. This is all pretty much stock stuff, I've only had the phone a month. This morning I woke up and it said "THERES AN UPDATE TO YOUR PHONE". I was like ****ING A RIGHT THERE IS. So I clicked next and took a shower.
Phone is stuck at the VIBRANT - SAMSUNG Screen. Since I had been in the bathroom about half an hour for the three Ss, I know it had half an hour to get this right. Rebooting the phone gives me the happy crappy jingle (yeah, still stock jingles) and then the phone hangs. Accessing the (stock) system restore screen and clearing both user and cached data did nothing, so I grabbed my kid and went to the Tmobile store. People tend to be more helpful when you're annoying them with babies.
They did the same thing, then they got on their super secret tech support line. The guy did a lot of Mmmhmming and reset the phone a few times and said it was dead. Then he handed the phone to me. They asked if I overclocked the phone with voodoo (something or other). No. They asked if I had task-killers installed (Advanced Task Killer) and if it was set to kill anything automatically. I said no. They asked me what I had installed since I got the phone. I'm not a poweruser here, I hadn't really had the time to dig into it nor the inclination figuring the update was in the pipe, so I gave them a list. I asked if they could see what was installed, she said they could not, hence the questions.
At this point they offered to ship me a new device, and lent me a new phone. The shipping, unlike other laments on the forums, is free IF you don't take their offer to upgrade.
I got off the phone with them and let my kid eat the displays for a bit - apparently I'm *phone number four* they've had come in today to be sent back. Tmobile knows they have an issue and they are replacing the phones for free so long as you're not that far off the reservation. Now, I'm guessing there's not four people who read these forums and mess around with their phones out here in the sticks, so even the stock phones are getting killed here. If it kills my wifes phone (and she is absolutely stock, GPS crap and all) then I'll know there seriously is a problem. The technician advised me not to update the phone until further notice, I'm inclined just to be a PITA and keep doing it as motivation to at very least pull the update.
Damn that is awful. I was under the impression only rooted phones with laxfixes and/or different kernels were screwing up the update. I wonder if someone, somewhere, is getting fired over this fiasco LOL. Four phones replaced in one day.....

Just to be fair to tmobile, it was rooted. I had titanium backup on there to uninstall the meego stuff, the in flight internet stuff, the sims 3 (170MB if I recall correctly), AVATAR but the goal was to uninstall the stuff that was clearly advertising and such. It wasn't taken to the level of having TEH NEXUS WON or a "Stock ROM".

Yep I just got back from TMO store. Mine was bricked PERIOD. "would not power up" Mine should be here Weds. I paid the $10 for express Ship and they gave me a loner.
A few people who got there's already have posted on here and other threads it may be locked pretty good.If this is true and IF HTC does not send a OTA out for it will you keep it after 29 days?
To me if it can't be rooted by week 2-3 back it goes to sprint i have no use for it if i can't MOD it.
why theMOD EDIT does everyone play the what if game.

I'll still keep it. I know it'll be rooted eventually. I'm currently using a Hero, so the 3D will be a definite upgrade for me.

Yep and we have the engineer hboot. It's all a matter of patience
Im more concerned about the picture quality and battery life. I havent used my digital camera except a few times since me and my gf got the evo 4g. The 8mp cameras awesome. The battery life sucks and from what i understand should be alot better on 3d. Im so sick of my friends iphone lastin all day at work. Me on the other hand i have to throw it on the charger by lunch

cause rooting doesnt determine if i keep the phone or not yeah it would be nice to but its all extra.
I would bet 70% of the people on here would send it back before 30 days if it can't be rooted.

Yup, I'm too addicted to modding and flashing to cut it out cold turkey. The 3d is clearly a badass phone, with or without root. But for it to keep me happy, I need root. I'll give it the 29 days. If no root by then, I'd return it and go back to using my Evo, then wait and see if a root method is found for the 3d. I feel pretty confident that root will be found within that time frame though.
Anything at this point is just speculation. No one from the general public will have an EVO 3d in hand until Wednesday at the earliest.
If HTC actually plans to unlock this device, it's quite possible they are waiting until the actual release to provide the code or key. After all, what good is a key if the lock hasn't been made yet? I hope HTC provides the key publicly and not as an OTA or other update. Sprint likely would not let that fly, but it will take Sprint six months to pass it through testing if they did.
What other phone would I go to? The Nexus? If there was something out there maybe but nothing else will be here in time...or anything good anyway.
But this bad boy will be rooted. It might be a month from now but HTC will hold up there side of the bargain and give us root access.
If it can't be rooted it will be replaced. Give a dog a bone.
But it will be rooted no doubt. Have no worries friends!
well i am rather addicted to flashing roms and themes so i dont know that i would want a phone where i cant do that but im also into having a faster phone... sigh

Originally I was going to get 2, but with what looks to be a shoddy camera and not knowing when the bootloader will be unlocked, I'm going to get just one. If the one, stock, ends up being better then I feel it might be or it gets full root within a couple weeks, I'll get a 2nd. If not, I'll wait for the Galaxy S 2 and might even return the 1st EVO 3D.
It's going to boil down to how I feel about the one I get. If it's better then expected, I'll get #2. If not, and depending on how well it performs to my liking, I might keep it or get rid of it too b4 the 30 days are up.
To be honest, I'm really hoping it's better then what I think it's going to be because I really don't like Samsung phones.
I'll be keeping it. If full root isn't gained in that time frame, we might have a temp root, allowing us to at least run root apps and do some other things.
I'd probably kill it with fire.
So currently I am running liberty3, and I don't know if it is the rom or not, but my phone has been overheating, freezing, and just being really god damn slow. It has been like this for a while now, I have even throw my phone out of frustration(because eclipse was the same way) and I have no what to do.
I am debating to just flash cm7, but heard it is still in beta, and I was wondering if people are using it even though there are bugs.
Really frustrated at the moment would appreciate some info...(1 more year on this contract before I can get rid of this POS...=/)
CM7 is very stable. As for it being "beta" cyanogen won't support it so until DZK figures a way to get around the bootloader it will keep the "beta" label.
Regarding the problems your having with your phone it sounds like it could be just that, problems with the phone, not the ROM. Eclipse and CM7 are the two most stable ROM's we have available and should not be the source of the kind of problems you describe.
And lastly remember CM7 runs on 2.3.4, it will give you fits if you try flashing it on 2.3.5.

CM7 is quicker and more stable than any of the blur-based roms ever were on my phone, and all of them had a really irritating issue with bluetooth volume that CM7 fixed. I've been running on the same flash of beta 1 since January.

this is actually making me laugh the stupid **** it's doing right now, I press play on a song, and the screen starts distorting, i exit and 90 seconds later the song starts playing, but then it pauses and the phone gets hot all of a sudden
how do you manage to **** up a phone this badly I just don't understand(I have owned this since 2011 may, it can't be a phone problem it just started happening 2-3 months ago)
Personally i hate people like you.... Why the hell should verizon send you a replacement for something youve ruined by throwing at a wall or across a room... Cm7 works fine but nothing will change the fact that abusing your electronics is your problem... You cant treat tech like that and expect it to keep working

Oh please. The droid x2 is one of the WORST developed android phones out right now. Not only that, the issues I have had with it came LONG before I actually "threw" it. Obviously I didn't baseball throw it into a concrete wall, but it wasn't even close enough to do damage. Verizon should send me a replacement because motorola has created a pretty pathetic excuse for a phone, or because I received a defective phone. Like I said, these issues have been going for FOREVER, and this phone in general has had issues since its release.
The phone isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You would think that we got a brick in A box. But cm7 is very stable and works well for DD.

I agree that the Droid X2 isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Any problems you have is either a defective phone or you flashed something the wrong way. Almost everyone who have these ROMs on their phones have no problems. So instead of blaming the phone and calling it crap, let us help you fix it.
First of all, as was mentioned already, CM7 and Eclipse are two of the most stable ROMs for this phone. Liberty was just a quick port and has not had any updates since its release. Honestly, I dont know why people still use it. The problem with Eclipse is that it is on a different kernel than every other ROM we have. So if you went from liberty to eclipse without changing the kernel to 2.3.5 first, you will experience problems. Did you install Eclipse by using the 2.3.5 SBF file first?
Or if you want the best of both world's I have eclipse 1.3. It runs on 2.3.4 kernel. These phones do get hot. What do you mean by overheat? Does it shut down or just feel hot?

Sounds like luck of the draw to me. I for one do my very best not to abuse electronics because they are 1) fragile and 2) expensive to buy/repair. Keeping that in mind, I did, ONE TIME, get blackout drunk and from what I'm told, chucked my X2 at someone's head and then they stomped on it, screen facing up. Absolutely no physical damage at all. That however is very, very, very rare.
Generally in my personal experience, Motorola makes some solid phones. I've put the Droid X, X2, Droid 3 and the new RAZR through hell and they all held up on performance after being dropped, kicked and being tossed onto asphalt and concrete. The only one I actually got the break with a reasonable amount of force was the Droid 3.
I can also tell you that no two phones are created equally, ever. Why do you think every single person who owns a Nexus isn't currently on the same ROM/kernel combo? What is fast, smooth & has good battery for me might be choppy and fast to discharge for someone else. Just because your phone doesn't act how it should doesn't mean its the ROM. You could have gotten a lemon (it happens) or maybe you just damaged internals when you chucked it. Doesn't matter if you didn't throw it like a baseball. All you need to do is hit the right part with the right amount of force. That's all it takes.
Hell when I got Verizon to exchange my X2, they sent me a Stratosphere. The same day I got the phone I put it on silent and went to bed. Some asshole called me at 2:30am that night. I did not answer it. instead, I rolled back over and went to bed. The phone vibrated off of my nightstand. It fell all of about 2.5 feet onto my BED then another 5 or so inches onto my carpeted floor. The screen was completely cracked and totally 100% unresponsive. There absolutely is no minimum requirement for force or distance needed to break your phone. Simple as that.
I can relate to you in the sense that I went through a phase where I hated the X2 as well, so I'm not trying to bash you. Keep that in mind . Also keep in mind that ICS wasn't even out yet. In fact CM9 wasn't much more than a rumor. The only ROMs I had to chose from were Molten & Liberty (both unsupported), Eclipse and CM7. I guess MIUI was out already, but it was so far down in the dev forum I didn't even know it existed months after I got the phone. Now you guys have ports for Paranoid Android and AOKP? Come on man. If I'd known they were coming I would have never left and got a Stratosphere.
Not to mention that the famous X2 developer, Dragonzkiller, is not only working on kexec for your phone, he's making progress with it. If he happens to get it working and you could load any kernels you wanted that would open up development around here and you would see a lot more, fully functional ROMs. It isn't so bad. When dzk gets kexec working you will have a great phone in terms of specs and ROMs, man.
You think a locked bootloader is bad?? Haha at least you have ROMs besides stock. My stratosphere? Sure the BL wasn't locked, but the radio interface layer was. In case you didn't know, ROMs like cyanogen, aokp, paranoid android, miui, eclipse, etc. use custom RILs. What this means is that the less than 7 month old 4g phone I got as a replacement for my X2 had much less going on for it than your phone. We had a grand total of TWO ROMs and they were both based off of stock. Just mostly theme changes. Plus only 1 kernel that would let us over clock. Barely.
To answer your first question, yes. Dragonzkiller's release of cyanogen mod 7 is stable enough to be used as a daily driver for your X2. I used it as my daily ROM for about 99% of the time I owned the phone. The other 1% was me trying other ROMs. Generally in CM7, everything works. The only issue I had (from memory) was the WiFi sleep issue. However, another one of the talented X2 developers released a new build.prop mash up which helped. It didn't keep WiFi from disconnecting when the phone slept for long periods of time, but it did reconnect it before I had a chance to get a "No Data" error message.

If you have any issues with your phone... something isn't working, you soft bricked it, you flashed cm7 over 2.3.5 and you don't know what to do, etc., there will be someone here 24/7 to KINDLY assist you and get you back up and running again. I dare you to go to another forum and post a noob "help me" thread somewhere and watch how many hateful, unhelpful, "search next time noob, there's stickies for a reason" replies you get. I missed the X2 so much when I was stuck on my Stratosphere. You think your phone lags? Try going from a dual core to a single core. Hahahahaha, THEN come talk to me about lag. XD.
The best I can do for you is say call Verizon and tell them you're having issues with the phone. As long as it's not visibly noticeable that you damaged it, go through tech supports steps and have them replace it with another X2 and give these ROMs another go. I would have been pissed if I had year to go on stock motoblur, but luckily I had cm7 to make things okay.
And hey, maybe you can get it exchanged. Who knows? Quite a few of us did. Just be careful as to what phone you accept. They sold the Strat to me like it was a brand new, top of the line phone. I stupidly accepted it right away, just happy to get off of the X2 only to realize I screwed myself. I pretty much had to give Verizon my left nut to get this GNex, and that was my favorite one.

Thanks for the long reply, I realize what I did/posted what a bit childish (I am 20 years old, I shouldn't be crying over stuff like this) but I really have never been so frustrated with a piece of technology in my life, even my moto razr that I had years ago functioned better!
I guess my only plan is to go to verizon to get it exchanged, only thing is I am not sure how to approach them with a rooted phone. Do I unroot it and then go in to the store, or do I just tell them I rooted it...Plus I have had the phone for a year, so I am not sure how they will respond to that.

If you are going to take your phone into Verizon, follow these instructions to get your phone back to stock. This will remove root and make it like you just bought your phone. Who knows, maybe it will fix the problems you have as well. Try it out and if your issues continue, take it in.

I guess my only plan is to go to verizon to get it exchanged, only thing is I am not sure how to approach them with a rooted phone. Do I unroot it and then go in to the store, or do I just tell them I rooted it...Plus I have had the phone for a year, so I am not sure how they will respond to that.

Basically you would need to SBF your phone. SBF stands for system boot file, I believe. It is the complete stock factory image for your phone. That plus a data wipe/factory reset and they will have no idea you ever rooted it.
As for having it for a year, you may run into a problem there. Motorola might cover the X2 for two years, I'm not sure. Your warranty could be expired. You have to call Verizon to know for sure. If it's not expired just tell them that you're having whatever issues. They will run you through some steps, probably a data wipe, amongst other things. You tell them that no, none of the steps were able to fix the problems you are currently facing. At this point, if the phone is still under warranty they will go ahead and replace it for you. If not they will tell you to go through insurance, if you have it.
If not you're either going to have to pay for another phone off contract from a third party or stick with the one you have now.
If you still have warranty and really want to get a different phone, just tell them that you did plenty of research independently online and it would seem that no amount of X2s will fix the problems you have. That they seem to be due to poor coding at Motorola's end. That's what I did. Just remember to look up the phone they offer you as a replacement so you don't get burned like me. Not just the specs, but here on xda and rootzwiki as well. Make sure there's a development forum for it with plenty of selections for ROMs and kernels before you make your choice.
I was able to not only get rid of my X2 like that, but the Stratosphere as well. The one I had less than a month hahaha. If you're covered by warranty give it a shot.
P.S. The most frustrated I have ever been with a piece of electronics? My PlayStation 2 slim. I had a few of them, but there was one in particular that pissed me off. It slowly but surely stopped reading my discs. 1 at a time. It would read a game, I'd go to bed and the next day it wouldn't read that game anymore. It could play other games, but not that one. It got progressively worse until the only disc of any format it would read was SOCOM: Combined Assault. Wasn't too bad, it'd give me trouble every now and then, but it was the only disc it would play for months. Socom also happened to be my favorite game at the time and I played it all the time with my cousins and friends from school. We were all in a clan and we ran that game. Anyways I was with a bunch of guys one day and we were in the middle of a clan war. Ladder match. We made it all the way to the top, and my PS2 stopped reading socom. I tried frantically to get it working again, but it was useless. The laser finally crapped out. In a blind rage knowing the PS2 just cost us our biggest clan war ever, I threw it out of my second story window. I then proceeded to go outside with a hammer and utterly destroy it.
I had just gotten a job and was working, so I had to buy a new one. Lesson learned. Those *****es were expensive lol. Never did anything like that again.

To this day I still don't know. Maybe user error, but I think it is tempermental. I literally had to wipe the hell out of it before I could flash the first rom. At one point I wiped everything so many times, I really thought it was over. But all of a sudden it decided to work and hasn't missed a beat since. Now, I don't wipe anything on it anymore. It runs like a sewing machine.
CM7 is still rockin' on 2 of the X2's that I loaded and themed out.

As far as overheating is concerned you may want to look at adobe flash. Using the latest version caused issues for me and I gave had to revert back to a previous version. As others have mentioned going with CM7 or eclipse will make a huge difference. I have had 3 other smartphones with vzw and this was the best one so far.

I want to start off by saying im sorry to all of the EVO LTE community as I was a firm believer that the EVO was a bad product. I work for Sprint and see a lot of EVO LTE come through the door with the connectivity issue and they need to be replaced, so i passed judgement and for that I apologize. That being said I am not an iSuck user I come from the EVO 4g to S2 to S3. I owe all of the credit to the S2 for all I know now and have tried to learn, As i soft bricked 2 days after ownig the device and that is how my passion ( obsession ) for android and this community began. Qbking77 saved my life then and since I have been learning and teaching people everything I can about all of these phones.
Now to present I use 2 phones 1 for business 1 for home life and i had 2 S3 when I had posted 1 on cl for the wife to trade for an iSuck5 when someone shot me an offer i couldnt refuse, his EVO LTE and Nexus7 tab for my S3 needless to say I told my wife I was trading her phone lmfao haha sorry hun, she letting me do my phone was like whatever. I started playing with the EVO trying to learn to root it frustrated cause I couldnt get the oneclicks to work so I decided to venture off into the adb world I try to stay away from but with luck and patients got her rooted and started playing with roms setups and what not, MAN AM I IMPRESSED!!!!!! :laugh:
So XDA and fellow EVOLTE's I apologize for not giving this phone a chance until now!
PS: I love both of my phones S3 and EVO , and tab lol , and now believ that these devices are very close in comparison with each device having there own leg up.

It's a solid phone but more for the advanced power users. I say advanced because even regular power users have trouble understanding this phone. It's a great all around device. Now if sprint could fix their ehrpd issues. I thought it was an issue with the evos but I've had to do the airplane trick with my evo, my gf's evo, my sister's s3, and my cousin's iphone 5
I'm in the process of trying to get rid of this phone and go back to an s3... After months of loading screens and waiting literally a minute to pull up a text message(and this is after I've cleaned out my texts) I'm done with this device, it's a shame because the specs are awesome! SENSE just cripples the phone. And I should not have to root a device to get it to accomplish basic functions properly. I've been an android user since the G1 and I have rooted every phone I've had since... But now I don't feel like should have to resort to that. Flashing is an obsession I would rather like to stay away from..lol I got my insurance through radio shack and at the store they said I have a 50/50 chance of receiving a gift card that I could use to go and buy the phone of my choice, or they would send me a new EVOLTE.. I'm hoping for the gift card, so I can go back to the S3.

I love the specs of my EVO LTE. I HATEEEE the Mobile performance. As of today I have switched back to my HTC EVO 4G (non LTE) because I can't take a phone that is not able to switch to 4G and 3G properly...
I have tried every ROM and Mod i could find and nothing has fixed it. (im in Chicago Suburbs where there is decent LTE)
Ouch I believe I said I love both phones S3 and EVO and I'm not an advance user just an avid daily user of any and all things smart phone!

I've been rooted for a little while now, but completely agree that you should not have to flash a phone for it to work. However, the thing I loved about this phone when I first got it was that it worked as it was advertised. I never had those text problems, or any slowness of any kind. Loved it. The only issue I did occasionally hit before rooting was sense reloads. But fixed that now.
I've played with my sister's giii. It's definitely a nice phone. And I wish I had the ram that phone had. But otherwise, I like this screen better, and overall design.

Two of my friends, along with myself, have the LTEvo. None of us have experienced any of the issues you mentioned. My phone is rooted with a custom ROM, my friend is rooted with the stock ROM, and my other buddy is 100% stock (not rooted). All three of our phones run like beasts. I think you may have just gotten a bad phone. Not every unit is going to be flawless. Out of the millions of phones built by any manufacturer there are definitely going to be a percentage that just don't work. Unfortunately, you are the recipient of one of these lemons. Don't blame the overall phone. Blame that one specific unit. The LTEvo is an amazing phone. One of my best friends, and fellow technophiles, has the GS3. He has given me a tour of it and has let me test drive it. I can guarantee that the LTEvo is just as awesome as the GS3.

Have you even tried replacing it? Those aren't normal issues. My evo ran flawless. I decided to root it just to further push its limits but I had no issues prior to that.

Hey guys, so I recently picked up the S4 as I had an upgrade and chose this phone specifically for it's support by developers here on XDA. Strictly due to my own aloofness, and not having checked the forums for a few weeks before walking into the store (fail), I ran the update as it popped up immediately and I figured "why not" (I KNOW, I went full-retard and expected something useful from a Verizon OTA... they screwed me last time with an OTA too ).
Anyway, I still have about ten days before my "Worry-free Guarantee" runs out, and I'm really considering going back and claiming a warranty replacement on my phone in an attempt to receive a non-VRUAME7-equipped phone (as I said, the 16GB versions in stock there didn't have the update initially). If I attempt to claim the phone as defective, do you think I could avoid the $35 restocking fee, considering I'd swap for the exact same model of phone?
I'm not sure what to expect when going back there. Some CSR's seem much more technical than others, so I don't know if I'd be drilled about the issue I'm claiming. Any advice here? Would focusing on a 'bad battery' or 'device overheating' raise any red flags? Should I bring it in drained of battery life? I've kept excellent care of the phone; it's in mint condition without a scratch or blemish, non-rooted, and fully updated.
Even if I have to pay the $35 fee, I would do it for a non-updated phone. I'm just worried that by chance the CSR that gives me my replacement would decide to run the upgrade, as it will pop up immediately. Also, any tips on ensuring I avoid the upgrade until I back up the phone and root it? Just yank out the SIM until it's good to go?
Thanks for any advice you may have. I'm new here so flame me relentlessly for any rules I may have broken . And yes, I know, ultimately I'm complaining about having an S4 (read: kinda being a *****).

My understanding of the guarantee is that it can be returned for any reason. I can't tell from a quick Google search, but it sounds like you might have a shot at no restocking fee if you're exchanging for the same model.
Given those tidbits, I'd tell them you want to exchange the phone due to reduced functionality after the update, and leave it at that. If they offer to troubleshoot, you can then say "sure, remove the update", which they can't do. I think this approach will give you the best chance of leaving the store with an un-updated phone and no fee. No CSR is going to take the OTA after having to deal with the guy who really hates the update for nonspecific reasons.

Interesting point, TheJ0hnman. I think turning window animations to something atrocious will help me have something that seems effed upon a cursory check, as well as some other developer options that undoubtedly make you think "wtf" if you don't know better, like flash on update etc. (wish I could then rehide the developer menu). Do you really think blaming the update would work well? I think I'd rather feign ignorance and say that the update "screwed with everything, battery life and runs slow", and act as if I'm unfamiliar with technical operation of android.
I don't think user error is covered under the 14 day WFG .
Why not keep it simple by saying you just want to swap colors. Whichever is less popular (white?) might have a bigger stock backlog & thus be more likely to have MDK firmware. Then either be bold and ask them not to update OTA, or be in a terrific hurry to get somewhere else and tell them you'll activate and set the phone up yourself.

That makes a lot of sense, cantare. Only thing is I might end up paying the restocking fee. I think I'll try the warranty replacement first. Imagine me going through all this just to get another VRUAME7'd phone!

Unfortunately it's yourself that screwed you. Not the OTA.

Hi Everyone. I just upgraded to the S4 last Sunday and while I was in the store and they were activating the phone, it started the update. I did not realize that this update locked everything down.
So, I decided that I would wait it out and see when the new update would be cracked. That was a couple days ago and I was having flash withdrawals. This morning I figured I would go to the Verizon store near work and just ask straight up ask if I could return my phone because of the new update....and as soon as the words update came out of my mouth, the girl interrupted me and said "Yes, we are having all kinds of issues with the new update and have replaced phones all weekend. We will get you a new phone".
5 mins later, new phone in hand with MDK software. AND the whole store told me not to take the update that another one is in the works. Can't wait to get home and root this thing and get Andy's Bone Stock ROM running.
anyone know the status on refurbs with the update?
i might have to get mine replaced due to brightness problems on my buttons and curious how well people are doing with the refurbs

Yes, I went to the store, and it was swapped out no problem. I didn't try to scam, or make up anything up. I just said what I posted and she stopped me mid sentence and knew about the update and how it was messing people's phones up and grabbed a brand new pre-updated one.
I just finished up rooting, installed a recovery, and installed Bone Stock. Everything went flawless.

Wow do I feel sly! My experience was not quite as straightforward as yours, kaos2569, but I pulled it off! I had to convince two CSRs, one who actually also owned an S4 and was clearly no n00b (though he said he had the ME7 update so I guess not an XDA regular). I used one of the update screens in developer options to trick the first lady, who then restarted my phone and had me wait to be seen. While waiting, I went back and turned on developer options again, then turned them off, realizing beforehand that open apps will retain the "screwy" look even with the options off. The guy proceeded to investigate my phone for what must've been 20 minutes. I kept insisting the problem was intermittent and hinting at the possibility that the update played a role in the problem. After some skepticism (he noticed the developer options were off but the menu was available; I played dumb, saying I let a gadget-freak friend look at it for a bit), he finally offered me a free(!) replacement and I took it. I was waiting for a while once he got the new phone out, and was getting nervous that he might've been installing the update. He said "I'm downloading the update now, I'll run through it here to make sure there are no issues" so I immediately told him I had to be somewhere in ten minutes. He handed my phone back to me, I turned it off immediately, pulled the battery, and went home. Pulled the SIM card and booted-- still MDK indeed! Wow. It was a process but it was worth it. Can't wait to get some custom ROMs on this!
I can understand the animosity some people might have over doing something like this, but I was scarred by Verizon for nearly the entirety of the two years I had had my old phone, due to another damn OTA update, which didn't lock me out, but installed Gingerbread and made the phone basically impossible to use (legit, 12 seconds to open the ****** dialer). all i did was take it back within first 14 days... before i did though i went into app settings and disabled all apps including play store so they were not visible in app drawer. i told him it was freezing and soft booting itself after i updated the phone.. then i told him i called in and spoke with a tech n did a factory reset and everything dissappeared including my apps and i cant dl apps since my play store is gone.. he was lookin at it for a bit and was like wow thats weird! i told him the tech said since i was within 14 days he told me to go back to the store and exchange for a new one that wasnt updated.. worked like a charm! i told him not to update it that ill decline it until they come out with a new update n that was it! rooted n installed twrp soon as i got home been flashin every rom on here since! currently on hyperdrive n lovin it!

He said "I'm downloading the update now, I'll run through it here to make sure there are no issues" so I immediately told him I had to be somewhere in ten minutes. He handed my phone back to me, I turned it off immediately, pulled the battery, and went home. Pulled the SIM card and booted-- still MDK indeed! Wow. It was a process but it was worth it. Can't wait to get some custom ROMs on this!
I can understand the animosity some people might have over doing something like this, but I was scarred by Verizon for nearly the entirety of the two years I had had my old phone, due to another damn OTA update, which didn't lock me out, but installed Gingerbread and made the phone basically impossible to use (legit, 12 seconds to open the ****** dialer). I just couldn't let Verizon lock me down again without a fight. And I will *SURELY* remember that guy the next time an upgrade comes along.

And you are proud of this? It's because of people like you returning non defective products that the rest of the consumers have to suffer. tl;dr guess you have a total lack of integrity and morals to just accept your screw up. You sir are a douche bag.

You guys are certainly entitled to your opinions, and I really don't disagree. I have egg on my face from the whole event. After all, it was my fumbling that screwed me over in the first place. However, I'm curious as to your feelings about Big Red itself. Like I said, this phone enticed me exactly for it's support by this community, and Verizon obviously realized that if they in turn locked the phone down with an update. What of that?
zetsumeikuro; this device will quickly be determined a Certified Like-New Replacement. I took pristine care of the phone, didn't screw around with the internals at all, and even kept the touchscreen under the manufacturer-issued screen protector the entire time I had the phone. If someone (due to their own bumbling) drops their phone in water, loses it, etc. They will end up with that phone and be very happy with it, unless they expected to luck out on a replacement and receive a pre-ME7 phone as well. I'm sorry, I can't say I see the harm in that, or how any other consumer suffers outright. I could've gotten a replacement within my 14 days for almost any reason. Yes-- I got out of a restocking fee and got a pre-update phone; what if I just paid $35 and got a Droid instead?
hexitnow, absolutely. I goofed up, that's for sure. I could attempt to excuse that by saying how I've been working 65-hour weeks and attempting to orchestrate a move into a new apartment lately, but I'm sure nobody really cares about that. Yes, I was negligent, having read up on the phone in early June thinking our upgrade was sooner than it actually was (and being treated oh-so-rudely by a CSR when we thought our upgrades were available back then), but ultimately it was me being stupid. I believe I learned a lesson here, and you rightly may resent me and people like me for our stupidity, but people make mistakes. This isn't my first or last one, either. Ultimately, it's just a phone update, I screwed nobody in doing what I did except arguably Verizon, who I managed to avoid paying yet another $35 to. I... I just don't feel that bad. I've felt wronged by them at every turn, and honestly I feel worse sticking with them as my carrier then I do taking advantage of my "Worry-free Guarantee" (assuming you don't worry about $35 fees).
Note that I am known to be a "whimsical douchebag", however.

Don't see the harm in falsifying issues with a non defective device? I'm sure Samsung and Verizon will beg to differ. Yeah your device will probably get turned into a CLNR but clearly someone will be taking a hit for the brand new device you got. I mean the whole issue here that you seem to not see is the utter lack of integrity/honesty on your part. You screwing with developer options to make it look like the phone is having intermittent software issues to some untrained CSR. What you did there just reeks of desperation of you not willing to accept a mistake you made. I'm not going to go into the whole Verizon/Sammy locking down the device debacle, as there is the developer edition of the device. I'm not trying to defend Verizon and their ways.. Simply put it I'm disgusted with the lengths/measure you took to get a replacement device.

As I said, you're entitled to your opinions. I could've swapped the phone for any reason, even if I just "didn't like it", as per Verizon's policy. Even if I paid$35 and swapped for an iPhone both Verizon and Samsung would've taken the same "hit". I just managed to avoid the restocking fee. But as you imply, I'm sure Verizon and Samsung will gather in a circle and weep.
They can take that $35 from the device upgrade fees they failed to mention in store. But I'm expected to maintain my full integrity.gotcha.
