How to do a 'full' wipe? (no root) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I tried to do a full wipe to remove everything from the SGS2 but everytime I do, it keeps some settings and files when flashing a new ROM.
A few months back I took my SGS2 to the repair center and when I got it back (3 months later (yeah.. )) everything was gone from my phone!
So my question is: how did they manage to remove everything? I tried wiping cache, installing wipe roms and do a wipe from the recovery menu.
Hope you guys can help me out

Try reinstall stock rom through Odin...that wipes everything !

I did that several times (firmwares from samfirmware.com) but didn't work for me..
Will try again now with the latest ICS leak

Maybe those settings are being restored from your google account. When signing in for the first time, do not select the option to restore data.
If you factory restore the phone or do a clean install ALL data will be deleted from the phone.

Why 1 minute ? U mean after operagion completes or just after entering the command..
Because it depends on data size if ur storage is full than it take quite some time... If ur internal storage is empty than its a matter of seconds...

[Q] Factory Reset Dumb question

Ok here it is, treat me gently as I'm no expert. I have currently running ICS 4.03 LPD + CF-Root. I first flashed 2.3.6, then jumped to Lp8 and now LPd and never have wiped my phone. I have a lot of unused apps and was thinking in doing it.
Question: Will I loose Root? or apps like CWM and such? What about the info in my external SD card? Anything else i must take into consideration?

You will not lose root or cwm manager as that is in the system apps. You will lose all the apps you have downloaded though. But if you have Titanium Backup, My Backup pro or Rom Toolbox, you can backup all your apps and reinstall them once you have rebooted.
[EDIT] Also wipe delvik cache when you do a data/factory reset.

Cwm format data system internal storage dalvik.

Went ahead and restored a backup from cwm recover. Should i try again and wipe with the code you gave?
If your backup has issues you can try.

[Q] Advice on a soft brick.

It's a random softbrick, no changes have been made for months, so I've not backed up for ages, I want to svae contacts and messages and app data.
Will odin wipe data, can it be repaired with CWM no wipe flash?
Long version.
I've been using ICS for 4 months.
I did a wipe and fresh install on the release of the official GB ICS.
I then used clockwork mod to changle toggles and clock, then triangle away.
Things were ok until a month ago when I hit the App to SD memory bug, which was fixed be removing apps back to internal.
Again been fine for about a month.
Then today, random lock on "Samsung Galaxy s II gt-9100" screen.
No changes have been made for ages, the only change was adding on{x} today.
Whats the best way to try and get this fixed? I want to save as much data as I can, I've not backed up for a few months, as I wasn't ,making any changes.
Should I just Just use odin and see what happens, or is there a better way, even if it is longer?
Can I put a no wipe flash on my SD and use CWM to try and repair? Is this a more complicated risk move? if so whats the risk.
I'd really like to keep as much as I can 'cos I've got the perfect setup for me (besides the boot lock...)
THanks folks.

How long does it take to full wipe, install new rom and restore apps+data?

Hey guys/girls.
How long does it take you to do a full wipe, flash and restore? I've only ever installed one rom and was wondering how long it takes.
Also what is the process invlolved in how you do it?
Is it backup with titanium then go into cwm and Wipe Data / Factory Reset, Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache, Format System partition and Install rom. Then get titanium and restore everything?
U can use TitaniumBackup to backup apps and restore them when u flash new rom. I rarely use it. I do cwm backup of complete rom and then install and try new rom from scratch... U can do whatever u like.
Averege time for things u asked is aprox. ~10-20min..

Just out of curiosity, you didn't flash the jb leak provided in this section, didn't you?
If you did chances are high you got a full brick.
Are you able to get to download mode (volume down + home + power)? If yes, flash a stock firmware and try again.

In my experience, Titanium Backup should be used sparingly, It IS totally brilliant, but, depending on the ROM you are flashing from/to is like trying to shove a square peg into a round hole, it will go in, but it ain`t happy about it.
Also the amount of time it takes depends on how many apps you have installed.
Before you actually use Titanium, it is a wise idea to go into the preferences, and make sure the "migrate system data" and the "restore app external data" boxes are ticked. (should be default setting IMO)
From a fully app`d ROM do a full backup of sytem and user apps, but when it comes to restoring them, restore the apps only, the restoration of app data should be done selectively, and the most common system data(contacts, call logs, sms history etc) are usually highlighted green.
Then just use your phone and any time you come accross an app that is missing its data, restore it on a "per app" basis.
All this may take a bit longer than the 15-20 mins quoted, but rarely more than an hour.
This has been a reliable method for the 50 odd times I`ve flashed my SII, and the 20 odd times I`ve flashed my SIII....Hope this helps
I was just on I9300XXDLI8 and due to missing picture and music I decided to wait for the official.
Odin the Original Image 5 minutes
Wipe Data 1 Minutes
Phone Initial Setup (with usual play and gmail account) 3 minutes
FULL restore from Kies (119 apps and all other data) 35 minutes
Usual Play Store update for out of date apps 10 minutes
Took a total of 54 minutes.
AJW
Use Go Backup. Titanium fails to do auto restore often, resulting to a manual restore of all your data with Titanium backup using install, enter, done, install, enter, done' repeatedly.
Go Backup restores all without a single problem
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
A little cautious here maybe, but TB backup, boot into clockwork android backup, format system and data wipe cache / dalvik. Flash rom, restore apps but no data from titanium then restore data for a select bunch of apps (banking apps which require authentication and similar) restore call logs, sms via TB. Total time approx 1 hour.

[Q] BootLoop Problem !

Hi guys, I'm new to this Forum
Actually, Im having this problem…
It all about my font ..
I was using the fonts from settings > display > font … but then I thought of changing a newer font, and so I downloaded “Font Installer”
I didn’t read the instructions carefully before I download and install…It says **Backup first before you do anything**, and so, I install the font and it change my browser’s font and the folder font (like when you create a folder, it will show you how many app you have in the folder, it changed the numbers too)
I wanted to change it back to my original font but it wouldn’t let me anymore, I downloaded other fonts but it still doesn’t work..
My friend told me the original font for S2 ICS is [Roboto-regular.ttf]…
So, I try and try and try, finally, it allows me to change the font and it ask me to reboot.
Okay, I reboot my phone, then the phone starts and keep on loading at the “S Samsung Galaxy S II Logo’ and I wait and wait, it still doesn’t do anything..
Im thinking of my phone was BRICKED..Then I ask my friend straight away about it…What he told me was it is just “BootLoop” (not sure what is that)…
He ask me to do these steps..
1. Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button
2. It then directs me to CWM, It gave me 6/7 choices… (reboot system, wipe data, wipe cache and few more)
3. 1st I click reboot system (still doesn’t do anything), then 2nd I click wipe cache ( click yes and then I click reboot system again), not working also…
4. then my friend ask me to clear dvcache and clear all data, he say it will lose everything…
What should I do now ?
I've saved my contacts in my SIM..gallery, apps doesn't care anymore..
If so, do i need to reformat my phone ?
It won't help you so don't wipe

So can you go into CWM? (Volume up+home+power). Clear the cache and dalvik cache. Then go to install zip from internal SD(depends if you put in phone storage or micro SD.). Find the file from the above and install. Then reboot. Should be fine then.

Dalvik cache is just for the apps data. It doesn't reformat. Its not much actually. Just that it might cause errors with you don't wipe it. Hmm. Put it in micro SD card then. Install from external SD and reboot.
Sent from my potato.
When your phone starts up, the Dalvik Virtual Machine ( Dalvik Cache) looks at all your apps and frameworks, and creates a tree of dependencies which is stored in the dalvik-cache. This allows applications to run in an optimised state (and explains why your phone takes longer to boot up after applying a new rom, it’s rebuilding the cache.)
SO when flashing new roms without wiping dalvik cache sometimes will result in Force Close issue due to Dalvik VM skipping the caching process for apps as it detected existing app cache.
To connect your phone to the computer, connect it and in CWM go to "mounts and storage" . The last option should be "mount usb storage". Then you can move the file written above

[Q] I8552 Samsung Grand Quattro goes straight in CWM Recovery, after a fail backup

Hey, this is the first time I'm posting a problem here. I have a Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro (I8552). I rooted my phone yesterday via cwm recovery, and then made a backup using ROM Manager. It rebooted my phone directly into a backup page where it started backing it up, but my internal memory wasn't big enough so it failed and since then I haven't been able to boot my phone up... When I try to turn it on it goes straight into CWM Recovery page, and when I click "reboot system now" it turns off the screen and then reboots it again into CWM Recovery...
Then, since I couldn't access the apps (as the phone won't start), I made another backup through CWM Recovery, but this time in my external SD Card which had about 6 gb free space. So it made and completed the backup without any problems. But when I restore it from my ext SD Card it restores the system and stuff but then when it comes to data it shows the message
Error while restoring /data!
Click to collapse
. Every time.
And so I tried
wipe data/factory reset
Click to collapse
it does it, and completes the process, but still it won't boot up, neither by
reboot system now
Click to collapse
nor by removing battery and trying to restart.
Mind you, I didn't flash any new ROMs, it was still running my stock ROM when this happened...
So to sum up the things I've tried
1. Reboot system now
2. Backup in extSD Card (which worked) and restore from the same (which didn't work)
3. Wipe data/factory reset
Also one more thing, before any of this mess was made, right after I rooted my phone, I made a backup of all apps through the app called
Titanium Backup root
Click to collapse
.
Is there any way I can get out of this mess? And maybe make my phone accessible again.
And if somehow by sheer stroke of luck and your expertise, if I do get out of this mess, is there any way to root my phone again and recover the apps or appdata from the already made CWM backup? or the Titanium Backup I made (or is it gonna be gone because of the factory reset?).
Thank you in advance for any help or try you might

Yeah, but then will I be able to restore from the same backup (cwm) that's causing problems now, or will it not work even then?
And what about the backup I made with the Titanium Backup app, will I be able to retrieve app data from there?
Because the very reason I was backing it all up was to protect the app data, and it's pretty important. So is it possible to save it after stock flashing?
The stock recovery flasher will help u get out of that loop. Check the link posted above.
