My first time posting here, so please be gentle.
I've had my SGS2 for around 6 months now, its an unlocked ASIA (as I live in BKK). I noticed on the original stock firmware that the phone was running hot, as in the back panel around the camera would heat up to the point I could feel it in my pocket. This would normally happen if I was using a game like angry birds, or a psx emulator. But sometimes it would happen in the browser under normal conditions. I just thought this may be a issue with dual core phones, so I took this as a 'feature' and accepted it.
But now lots of people I work with have this phone, and it came up in conversation about heat. Everyone stated they do not have this issue, that the phone remains cool all the time.
I have moved between many different ROMs, and have finally stuck with Westcrips ICS ROM. Then a strange thing happened, the heat issue goes away with version 8.4. Phone is cool all the time, even playing my PSX emulator in software mode. Battery also increased from 12 hours to 16-18 hours.
But now I just moved up to 9.3, and its back again, the front screen is very hot to touch when using things like the MX video player, or surfin the web. And if I launch a game ... well, forget about it. The battery drain is immense to, be lucky if I pull an hour of use like that.
Anyone else suffer from this? Hardware fault? I can't take it back because my flash counter is probably in the 20's now, and I can't find a reset JIG in Bangkok.
Cheers.
FYI, I always do a clean wipe, dalvik / cache / permissions.
same issued here, phone bought from Thailand also. Phone getting hot when browser, downloading and playing some games( not all). And its really hot
Changing Rom and kernel sometimes solved it for awhile but eventually will come back.
Looking for solution also
Thanks
P/s: right now im using LA4 stock Rom and CF root LA4 kernel and still get hot

Thanks for getting back to me.
The one I know that fixes it is Resurrection 8.4. Its a dam good rom, and given me the best battery life (once I got 20 hours with normal use). But there is an issue with touch screen sensitivity that makes it annoying.
Maybe its something to do with the Kernel on the Asian models?
If I find a fix I'll pm you.
Hmmm mine only gets uncomfortably hot when playing some 3d games. Didn't experience the same level of heat when just browsing though... It just gets a little warm but far from gaming temps.
What i did was undervolt and underclock when playing. It did reduce the heat and extend the battery though i admit it's not the best solution / workaround.

What settings did u use for setcpu if u don't mind me asking? Will it work on ICS?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I use Tegrak Overclock so I can mess with clocks and voltages with the stock kernel. See below for my settings... 100% stable on my phone.

Cheers mate, will give that a go when I get home.
Right now my phone is warm all the time, just lost 20% battery as well in 1 hour.

Well it looks like the ICS kernel is not supported right now under Tegrak. It is bleeding edge.
I tried setCPU to under clock but ended up with a lot of slow down and some full system freezes.
Guess its back to 8.4 until I find a more definitive answer.

Since you're using Westcrip's Resurrection Remix, you can get rid of the triangle by using Chainfire's TriangleAway app - I'm using Resurrection too and it got rid of the flash counter and the triangle.
TriangleAway should work on all ICS roms though.
Strange, installed triangle away yesterday evening. Work like a charm, so I guess if I need to return I can now.

Thats not normal, it happened to me with my previous SGS2. Changed in warranty by my carrier.
Cheers.
Same frome here: use the warranty its not normal...

I guess that's my only option. On a new from and its cool now, but reset my counter for the flash so can get a service now.

i have resolved my problem by flashing a custom rom.
which from did you flash?
I'm using Thebyani ics v3 and after I disabled the stock browser all is good. Battery life too.

So recently my eris has been lagging really bad to the point where its pissing me off. it was working fine for a couple of month then the lag started so i factory reset my phone but the lag is still there. it would lag from 30 seconds to mins... I have the latest sensable rom on my phone and i dont think its the rom that is bad..
I was wondering what i can do about this lag.. is my phone broken? Another thing to add is that when the lag started my trackball also started to mess up it occasionally... a lot... moves the left. connection?
If your trackball is starting to scroll to the left at random times, then the lag could definitely be a hardware issue. I had the same issue before I got a replacement Eris. If your phone is still within warranty, then I would take it in and ask for a replacement.
i bought my phone used off of ebay... so i dont think i have warranty...

I remember seeing a thread long time ago with a guide about cleaning underneath the trackball. Removing lint and other particles might help your situation.
Just did a search. There are more thread regarding it, but here is one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716681
Have you changed your cpu frequency lately? It might not like the speed you are running it at. Also if you are using the setcpu widget that can cause problems.

thanks for the tip on fixing the trackball. it kinda works for me it doesnt scroll to the left as often now. but im still laggggggging like crazy.
i dont know how to change the cpu... i never messed with oc. just install the rom and thats it.

What ROM are you using? Many of the custom ROMs have SetCPU built in. It is fairly simple to use. Just adjust the slider bars for the minimum and maximum speeds. If you set it too high, it can cause kernel panic, which may result in random reboots and lag at times. Higher speeds also consume more battery power. If the minimum is too low, it might take a bit longer to wake up, once the screen is off.
I'm using senseable Rom. There isn't the setcpu app.

Mine is 28 C and I'm using phone for more than 2 hours, internet browser. If you tried differents rom and kernel and still nothing, I suggest you to clear up you phone. Reboot in recovery, mount and storage and format system, data, cache, factory reset, boot in download mode, flash stock ics rom, then root with cf root kernel. Then install again rom which you're using at the moment.
I9100 has the highest heat emission (my brothers 35 degrees)
I9100T is better (mines 28 degrees)
I9100G has the best i hear but i cant confirm that
The best you can do is find a good modem, as i noticed ever since i switched from LPQ to LP6 i've heated up a lot less
i also use siyah so i think that doesn't cause huge amounts of heating, as mentioned before always close apps
Hope this helped and good luck

Oh no your not wrong, both kernel, and modem have to do with heating up, but the Siyah kernel hasnt had any complaints with heating, so that's what makes me think your modem is the problem
I dunno which modem will be best for your device sry
you will have to figure out, use instructions here
My SGS2 is going back for repairs due to overheating. It started by draining a full battery in an hour. Battery temp was 64C and now it heats up just by inserting the battery and not even turning on the phone. Not possible to charge it either. Tried flashing stock rom, factory resets but no go so my belief is that this is a hardware issue and not a software problem. Needless to say it has never been close to water or any other fluids. I got the phone about two months ago so hopefully this will be, and should be IMO, covered by warranty.
Will be interesting to see what the repair center says...

Hi,
My Wife's GS2 had a problem overheating recently too - it was stock ROM, not even rooted, so it wasn't overclocked. I pulled it apart, racking my brains trying to find the problem. I tried updating the the latest official ROM, updating the Modem, but nothing...
It turned out that her Internal SD Card was full, which must have been causing IO issues, and the the CPU to overwork or something, because as soon as I transferred all the photos etc. from the card, and cleared caches, it resumed running at a reasonable temperature.
Sometimes the answer is simpler than the one we're looking for - or it certainly was in my case.
Hope that helps.
Hi...mine was heating up like hell too, and its 3 days old...
for me it was the facebook mobile application on samsung galaxy sII i9100 (ICS). Installed KH3 modem , no change .. but task manager showed 30-66 cpu usage...the top 10% surface of the face of the phone and the back of the phone near the camera was searing hot, somewhere up to 50-55 degrees Celsius, making a phonecall in those conditions was very uncomfortable, and i was afraid of hardware damage if that went on. So, If i shut it down and used facebook from browser, it cooled off back to 30-35 degrees in a matter of minutes. only mobile data was turned on, gps, bluetooth, wifi was always off.
So im guessing for these kinda heat-ups (top of the phone and upper back) it is app which drains the CPU...
Note : i had no problems with battery life, meaning it resisted 12h moderate/heavy usage even with facebook mobile app...but i always try to exit all apps when im not using the phone ( bad(?) symbian habit)
you should change the modem :good:

Dear Family,
i have a problem with my galaxy SII since i got the phone tell now
i've got this handheld 6 month back and its now rooted having ICS AOKP RR 2.2 with CM kernel remix
and the device is getting overheated in the part of the camera , the overheat is happening when ever am browsing the net on WIFI or even 3G
i searched the internet regarding the same and i got that the issue is in the base-band so i flashed KH3 and nothing was changed
i flashed my device with amout 300 ROM (official/unofficial) and nothing change in this issue
also i found that my device sometimes is stucked on 1200 MHz for about 5 MINS without a valid reason in the foreground

300 ROM??? Hmmm... Anyway I m also having(probably Had ) the heating issue... First Kernel-Siyah 3.2.x was heating while talking in call also.. Used to heat up like anything. Now on Fluxi heat reduced but not completely.. Today I called my frend to McD to check his SGS2 phone.. His phone is purely stock and was runnning ICS official 4.0.3.. For normal use the phone dint heat, neither mine.. Now the heat game started when I watched a Video(Not HD) even in mine also But gud thing was mine was not as heated as his may be because of Kernel or anything I dunno.. The main thing s battery shouldn get heated too much... But I dunno many ppl not having heating issue... S2 s so thin that heat has too dissipate thru somewhere so it uses the camera region... Try using the phone with low brightness it might be helpful also try KI4(correct me if i m wrong!!) modem. I din try that modem yet...

Try pulling the battery for 5 minutes to let it cool, then replace it. You can also try under clocking to 800 /1000 mhz to save some battery and not let it go to 1200mhz

This phone is stupid sometimes. Just sat in my pocket for the last hour doing nothing.wifi off
The battery drops from 89% to 65%
I take the phone out and its super hot
Says 49 degrees which isnt dangerous but it is very noticable in the pocket and to hold. and the chart says the phone was awake through that whole time without the screen on.
As soon as I start using the phone again it starts to cool down.
Bit annoying how often this happens.
i never had this issue on gingerbread
is there a fix for it?
Install BetterBatteryStats and check which program causes the wakelock. While ago Google Chrome was known to create this issue.
Anyone who updated your SGH-I777 to ICS facing heating issues while downloading stuff from market or using internet over WIFI/DATA?
My phone has horrible heating issues after the upgrade from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3. Its terrible. My phone on GB was smooth like butter and never faced any kind of heating or lagging issues. but this ICS upgrade is just one ****.....
Please help me by sharing your experience while on WIFI or DATA connection.....
Mine has been doing that for a few months now. Since I started using AOKP. Anytime I use my phone for a few minutes it starts to get warm, getting hotter the longer I use it. I was worried at first, but got used to it. Like the camera whirring noise, I just ignore it mostly.
I am planning on getting a warranty replacement anyway sometime before the warranty runs out, so I haven't worried about it.
It could be a rouge app running all the time. Better Battery Stats will let you see if any apps are preventing your phone from sleeping. CPU spy will also let you see if your phone is sleeping. A rogue app generally causes battery drain too. I see the same battery life on ICS as GB for the most part.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
I don't think it has anything to do with the app running...... Its a very fresh installation and after the boot, I have tested downloading the say 5 apps from Playstore. The top portion of the device heats up big time. I am an android engineer and have rooted and applied custom roms on the devices but I am not willing to do that on this device becoz the Stock GB on SGH-I777 (2.3.6) is the best i have come across in terms of stability and efficiency. So just badly wanna go back to stock 2.3.6 but online I saw ppl facing problem when they downgraded to stock 2.3.4.....
I am still repenting on upgrading the device...uffff damn it
The only time I noticed anything like that was when I put my phone in the
mobile dock and using the GPS and it was a hot day plus it was charging.
Once I plugged into the regular house charger it cooled down
(even though it was still charging).
I guess they have overlocked the device and thats the reason y its heating up
I don't over clock my phone. I run AOKP with Fluxxi kernel, and don't touch the CPU speed, voltage, or governor settings. My phone didn't get hot like this on SHOstock, but pretty consistently on AOKP it heats up when ever I use it. I posted in another thread about heat issues that at the end of the day I had 13 hours up time, and less than 3% was at 800 MHz or above. The most common was deep sleep, 200, and 500.
I don't worry about the heat anymore, I got used to it. Most of the time its just warm, but if I get downloading a big file it gets really hot. It doesn't seem to affect the performance or battery life, so I don't worry.

Ever since the first ics leak came out its been on my phone and have had nothing but heat issues some to the point i worpped my sim card and back cover. Or stay on GB lol. I really didnt like how buggy ATT ICS seems to be with some apps like WordPress
I would love to go back to GB but scared use the ROMS that are available online.. I have done lot unlocking and rooting stuff on devices but i failed one time and thats what is holding from rooting/unlocking the device. Also I have realized that the custom ROMs are always buggy.....
Some people have had heating issues on ICS, and others not. Don't really know what the difference is. I suppose there could be some differences in the hardware.
Anyway, going back to gingerbread is relatively safe. You can go back to fully stock, or you can go back to stock plus root. Each of these options would be by flashing the firmware with Odin from a windows pc. Neither of these packages contain bootloaders, so the risk is minimal, almost non-existant. The packages are UCKH7, Gingerbread 2.3.4, although there is a UCKK6 plus root available also. You can use the guides linked in my signature, the one for returning your phone to the store for straight stock, and the one for flashing firmware without incrementing the flash counter for stock plus root.
Custom roms vary in stability. Some are extremely stable. I would say that SHOstock2 is as stable as about any rom I have ever used. It's certainly good enough for every day use. It is ICS though, and don't know how your phone would do with it. I have seen a few reports of overheating with it, although my phone rarely gets even warm to the touch.
Just wanted to echo 1) my phone also gets hot when being used heavily (wifi, bt, gps, data, sync, all on) but not to the point of concern. And 2) the reco of shostock2 3.1.0+ for stability.

I would love to go back to GB but scared use the ROMS that are available online.. I have done lot unlocking and rooting stuff on devices but i failed one time and thats what is holding from rooting/unlocking the device. Also I have realized that the custom ROMs are always buggy.....

One of the most stable, smooth GB roms is UnNamed 2.2.1, which you can check out HERE. I used it for a good while, but wanted to try ICS. Excellent, stable rom, with themes available.
...its called fried ice cream.

I did try your odin but unfortunately it didn't recognize my device at all. So I juts gave up on using your odin. I am not sure why odin is not detecting my phone. I am using SGH-I777 AT&T with ICS 4.0.3. Any idea whats the problem. Please note that I have not rooted this device and its always been on stock firmware/software.....
i m on AOKP rom with my i777, it does heat up a little bit (lcd top part and back near camera) when i m using 3g, wifi is ok..i wonder if the antenna is around there so its causing heat?

You got it right. Thats exactly where I feel the heat on my device..... Trust me, I didn't feel any heating effect whatsoever when my device was on GB. So I m pretty sure that the hardware is all good and its the firmware/software thats screwing up the device.
Personally I found my phone got hot after setting up an exchange account on it. I also got massively reduced battery performance. Once I removed the exchange account operation returned to normal.
One or more of the apps (from the old GB install) that is running in the background causing it to heat up, I was ruuning into that issue when I first updated to ICS. I end up doing the factory wipe and reload every apps back on. Now I don't have that problem.
Hi guys.. ive been flashing all kinds of rom and kernel. In the end i find stock Ics with stock kernel gives me both the performance and battery life i need after removing useless start up and freezing unwanted apps.
Had been using the default touchwiz and suprising theres no lag or redraw or whatever issues. Only set back is i cant customize my stock rom.
Battery life wise i can get up to 6 hrs screen time or maybe more. Will post screenshot after i drain my battery.
On jellybean, batt drain is more noticeable regardless using stock or any other jb roms / kernels. Personally i dont like OCing or undervolting so pls dont mention abt those here.
I am wondering who else here share the same experience with both ICS and JB. Would u still stay on ics or jb?
Would love to hear opinions

Says it all really
I've recently returned to stock rom and kernel after trying warnamlite, miui and a few others. Stock is deco the next for battery. I'm getting nowhere near 6 hours screen time though. How are you stopping apps from starting up? Is this by freezing or have you used another method?

You got 6 hours of screentime with data/wifi on with ICS?
Personally I've been getting better battery life with MIUI on Jellybean, but I've also been using Siyah since the first day I flashed my ROM so that might also have something to do with it. I've had experience with stock ICS and MIUI ICS as well, and the battery drain was essentially the same. I'm running a heavily customized JDUltimate though. If you don't want to undervolt or flash another ROM/kernel then JD is a great alternative. I was using stock GB on my S2 with nothing but Juice Defender and I got pretty decent battery stats, though I can't remember them right now.

Root the phone. Use ES task manager to remove useless startup. Freeze those apps u dont need with tit backup. Btw i never deleted any apps

Hi .. yes approx 6hrs screen time. With only 3g. But i setted my display to around 20% brightness as im indoor most of the time. I usually use the same setup to test among roms and phones as ive got 2x S3 to play with. One of it is my gfs phone. She plays lots of games so i also hear her feedback regarding the roms and kernels i flashed for her.
I find using auto brightness actually drains the battery more with continus use. I also make sure i got only essential tasks ans apps running in backgrd. Btw i have whatsapp in backgrd all the time.

Yeah I have my brightness at the lowest setting most of the time as well, as the only time that I'm going to be in bright daylight is when I'm walking around, and I'm not going to be looking at my phone while I'm crossing the street and whatnot I figured that all of those "auto" settings actually drain more battery because of their constant turning off and on and adjusting and etc...it seems like it would consume unnecessary CPU power.
How do you manage which apps run in the background?

1. Root the phone
2. Install all the apps / games
3. Use ES task manager to remove unwanted startup
4. Use tit backup to freeze unwanted apps.
System apps like mapservice, secphone, samsung pushservice etc that runs in the background are frozen with tit backup and startup removed by ES task manager.
Result : No useless bloat running in your phones background. Better batt life and performance. I can achieve 300mb ram after a fresh reboot. Stays aroumd 400 to 500 range of ram after a day. Will observe ram a day more as i just flashed stock 3days ago.
But so far so good. Quad benchmark scores are a minimum 5.4k too! Will post screenshots on weekend.

Here are my ram usage after a days use. Task manager screenshot is proof of what i had been doing with my phone without any restart.
Cant post batt life yet cos my phone is still at 75% lol.

I went back to ICS cos of battery life I need phone that is stable first! and then battery that can last 12 hrs min with 4-5 screen time, unfortunatly ICS from my experience is just fine.Shame I want JB as well but need to be at least stable as ICS

I do care if I can change system stuff in the rom but Stability FIRST I just hope SAMSUNG will do it right this time and will provide Stable 4.1 Sammy I belive if you could do ICS stable then 4.1 will be grater for battery as well.Hope the wait for Btu is worth waiting

An Aussie? Smutty humour? Never!
(I also had a juvenile chuckle earlier when someone said tit backup!)
So far my experience is in ICS's favour.
Ok. JB is latest. FIne.
BUT TELL ME SOMETHING WE CAN DO IN JB AND NOT IN ICS?
I didnt see even a single sort of such think except some added settings in settings app.
Even looks are same.
We can easily mod the ICS rom to make it look better.
For looks and functions of JB, we can use launchers ofcourse!
And personally, in JB, my ram normal usage was 500+MB.
In ICS, with same apps, its 200-300 MB. How and Why? Both stock kernels.
Also, i am used to playing games while charging. In JB, the battery only declined, even while charging when i played game. But in ics, there is charging instead of discharging even when i play games.
Therefore, jb is mess for me! So unstable with lesser battery....
"Like for ICS, comment for JB"

Yeah, I typed out several replies, not sure what would get me banned but I am sure a couple of them would've been close.
Users want update because its an update not because its better other wise noobs would not have flashed leaked test roms or Polish firmware .
