I did some searching but finally found something that worked. CSDevCTRL, which I found in the market, can make long pressing the search button open your camera app. Just download, run the app, scroll down to long press search button ctrl and select quick camera. Now if you want this to be persistant after a reboot then scroll down to run CSDevCTRL at startup and click save changes. Now when you long press search, choose CSDevCTRL and use by default. That's it.
You can also do this in CM7 under cm settings it will open camera and then you can take pictures with search button also.

Is this possible at all? Or already done, maybe? would it be an app that could possibly run and replace this action or does it require a rom modification to do it?
I'd prefer specific apps to always be in my home long-press popup than just the most recent ones (ex: mail, web browser, twitter, facebook etc the ones that i am typically trying to get to )
Any thoughts?
I wouldn't mind having menu long press go to the dialer app so we can have a dedicated dialer button we can use when we have other apps open. Long pressing the menu button brings up the quick search bar which we already have a button for.

long pressing the menu button brings up the keyboard ... not the search...
Long press of menu brings up search on the vibrant, try it. (i read another thread that this isn't the same on other devices)
I assume that given that Vlingo can take over the long press of the search and home replacements can take over the long press of home, an app could be written to take over the long press of home to change its action as well?
I'm not a programer so I wouldn't have a clue of how to write an app that replaces that home/recent apps pop up to allow your own choice of shortcuts
Oh yeah, I guess I was wrong... I have to many devices to keep track of the differences...

I *kind-of* got what I wanted via the app "App Launcher" (link: http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.talondesigns.quicklaunch - $1.99)
It looks identical to the popup that you get with a long press of the home button - you can select the shortcuts you want to be in it, BUT it is a long press of the search key instead. Functionally, it is what I want, but I'd prefer to take over the home button action rather than using the search button, as I had that one assigned to Vlingo.
I was just wondering if it is possible to add shortcut to a search button.
For example, after I installed quick settings from market, I noticed that it added itself to the search button. I would like to add few more shortcuts.
Can anyone suggest how i can do that.
Thanks.
Update: I found a program on the market called "button shortcut" but it seems it can only add one shortcut to the search button menu.
Anyone?
I think it's a pretty neat thing to have.
If you use button remapper, you can use that button for other purposes such as launching the camera, but besides that, the app would have to be set to set a shortcut on the search button or it won't work.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to remap the button because the button will only perform one function. Instead, I want to be able to long press the search button and select the app I made shortcut to. The question is how do I put a shortcut to an app into the search button menu?
You use button shortcut like.you said. Clear your default, long press it, it will give you.a choice box. Check button shortcut. You have already set the app you want to launch within that app. Short press, search, long press dialer or whatever.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

Yeah, button shortcut works for a single app only. I want to be able to put at least 2 or 3 app in that search menu.

Yeah thats what i was talking about in my previous post...
The app that you want there has to be programmed to show up there, else every app would show up there, thats why you need to contact the dev to request it, or do it yourself, idk how so i can't give you tips, guides etc.

Ok thanks
Surprised I can't find anything about this one via google.
Is there a way to add items to the long-press of the search button and/or change the function of the single press.
Preferably, I'd like to change it, so when I single press the search button a shortcut of my choice is launched instead (in my case, a single click to open a Folder Organizer folder).
I have been doing this to launch task manager since long long time
Here is what you need to do:
1. Install launchkey app
2. Launch the app, and select the app you want it to open up
3. Long press search key, and map it to launch key permanently
4. Long press and it will launch the app mapped to launchkey
I found Launchkey this morning, bought & refunded it. When I tried to pick a custom app it didn't do anything at all. Custom menu worked though.
Sadly, even if Custom app worked, they don't allow a shortcut - just apps
Playing with ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464). Doesn't allow shortcuts either, but at least one can map to Camera or Phone button instead of search. Oddly, mapping it to Phone caused the long press to activate Vlingo (or something like that). Dunno if I'm keeping, but will mess around.
Considering the customization of Android, I'm very surprised the default O/S doesn't let you map the button & long press to anything - or at least an app in the market!
It does; it allows to map based on application that tries to make use of it. On my phone, it was popping up 6-7 options along with launch key, with go sms pro, voice command, voice search, etc being some of them. The app needs to be coded to make use of it. Android supports this feature.
I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the function of any of the four hardware keys at the button of the device.
For example, I do no use nor like the search key. So I was wondering if there was a way to change it so when I tap on it the applications drawer would open instead.
Any help would be awesome, thanks
I was going to suggest Button Remapper, until I saw that you wanted to open your app drawer with the search button. I used it to make the search button duplicate the menu button action for a while, but ended up changing it back.

I don't have a ton of experience with Tasker, but you might be able to get Tasker to do it.
I will check it out. Thank you

Looks like there is no option to change to open the app drawer. Worth a shot

Sorry to raise an older thread, however, I am curious if you needed to do anything other than install / run the remapper app?
I am trying to get it to work, to no avail. It opens, I see the options, I change the functions from search to camera, save, apply. After I reboot, it still does the search, no camera. The remapper program also sees the 'saved' functions of camera, but still no luck.
I just got jb but when I long press the home button it brings up task manager. I read somewhere it should open google now.
Any solution??
Long press opens task manager and on the bottom there are three buttons: first one opens task manager, second(with the G icon) is the google now, and the third is kill all active apps.

Or just map one of the custom launchers gestures for swype up to launch Google search/now, or app drawer button gesture up, kinda mimicking aosp way of launching it.
