I see that Target is currently offering this phone for $80 with contract extension. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to buying via Target? Will it cause any problems with warranty coverage or anything else?
Thanks for insights,
Craig
I can't see any problem with them. Just like purchasing from WM, Costco, or Amazon.
I'm really surprise that the price hasn't been dropping to $50 range.
The only thing is that you might have to pay full retail tax. Definitely should ask.

Thanks everyone! Will likely pick one up tomorrow. If I wanted to buy a decent case, where am I likely to find one in person (as opposed to internet)?
Wow this phone is really dropping in price. I still remember when I first got it for 200 dollars.
Costco. 80 bucks. Tax on 199.99

I bought mine from Target back in December.. Was able to get a price adjustment after the phone dropped $50 the following week, so hold on to your receipt till it expires.
They also offer a good insurance program that's $15 down, and covers 2 months off the bat, then is $7.99 every month after that, It also gives you a free battery every year.
You have to keep up with your bill payments and can not use another phone for 3 months or you'll get charged full retail for the phone. Campare this to Wirefly's 6 months (when I got my old Aria over a year and a half ago), and it's actually pretty lenient.
Bonus fun fact: Target Mobile is actually owned and operated by Radio Shack.

Not sure if this matters, but I purchased my GSII from Target and took out the insurance through AT&T a couple days after I got the phone I broke the screen, did my claim all went fine, when my 30 days was coming near I was thinking that I wanted to return the phone and wait for another phone. Since I filed a insurance claim and got a new phone, the numbers changed, so the return was not possible. Just wanted to let you know, I know the odds of what happened to me would be pretty low, but just something to think about =D
Got mine from Target a couple weeks ago..no problem. Never heard of that 3 month rule stated in post 7. I call BS on that. Technically you can sell that new sgs2 and put your sim in any device you want without them upcharging for getting the sgs2 on an upgrade price.

I'd "read" the receipt that target provided you with before you go and do that, sport.
"If the device and it's wireless service are not continuously in service for 90 days after the original purchase date and the device is not returned to the retailer, I agree that the retailer may charge my credit card an unreturned merchandise fee equal to the device's non activated price minus the activated price I paid. "
It's a contract you have with target mobile.
I wouldn't go around suggesting things that could cause people to owe a lot of money just because you hadn't "heard" of it.

Doesn't say that on my receipt....."sport".. Get my drift? You bought the device..you own the device..you can even sell the damn thing without opening the box. Nobody can force you to use your sim card in it. Gimme a break.

I work for a wireless retailer. And authorized dealers have strict policies. Most only Get paid if you retain your contract with its features you signed up for, for 180 days (such as Wirefly and amazon!) Costco doesn't, neither does best buy. But target must have another way around it. I would be careful because wirefly and amazon have it in the fine print that they will charge you full retail if you change things.

Unless you sign a contract stating otherwise...
Make sure you're reading ALL of the white and black thermal paper receipt that the rep gave you, that's your contract with target mobile, not the one with AT&T letter head.
If you bought it online, I don't know what you tell you, other than read everything that was sent to you, even seemingly unimportant fliers. Wirefly had their stipulation typed on a cheaply printed, thin piece of yellow paper that I almost threw away.
I guess the moral of this story, is for everyone to be aware that when you buy a contract phone through a 3rd party retailer, you're signing contracts with two parties;the carrier for the service, and a limited one with the retailer for the phone.

Most of these would be orders cancelled within the past 3 months or returned, so condition can't be that bad. I want to say a majority would be those returned by people who wanted the SkyRocket, so yeah, good stuff.
Thanks for the heads up. Think i'll get a couple for my kids.

Just ordered one, getting rid of the laggy captivate.......... Hopefully I get a GPS that doesn't need medication finally.
refurbs only have 90-day warranty. So, be prepared. You are in it for 2-year contract. If it broke at day 91, you are SOL.

No doubt, I always randomly check whenever we have upgrades available on our lines. Had got a HD7S a couple months ago that was normally 200 for a penny. Brand new, not refurb.

I was trying to buy one of these for $0.01 on Friday but ended up getting it for $9.99.
I was having trouble completing the process because there was no option for unlimited data plan, this was around 745pm. After speaking with someone over the phone on ATT they said that they made notes on my profile and to go ahead and but it under the 4GB data plan and they would change it back to unlimited before I activated the GSII. So I proceeded to do so but I noticed that the price had changed to $9.99. Im assuming the change happened at 8pm my time (EST) but not sure why they would do this on a weekend, oh well no penny phone for me but 10 bucks isn't so bad either.
I got one for $99 from radioshack with full warranty. Still a good deal for this phone.
I rather pay 99 at Radioshack then free refurb.

most likely nothing to worry about. And if you do have a problem with it, you'll most likely come across the problem fairly quickly so warranty is not usually a problem.

Did the same thing last weekend. There was an option to use the existing data plan when you select "Add on" from the shopping cart.
Anyway, ended up paying $76.11!!! Here's the cost breakdown from AT&T Premier...
One-Time Charges
Phone/Device
Samsung Galaxy S(TM) II (Refurb) $9.99
Upgrade Fee $18.00
Sub-Total(One-Time) $27.99
Sub-Total(Monthly) $25.20
Order Summary
One-Time Charges $27.99
Estimated Tax $48.12
Shipping $0.00
Total One-Time Charges $76.11
Monthly Charges
Data Plan
Smartphone Personal Add On for 4G Devices $30.00
Service Discount -$4.80 (company discount)
Features
Applications
Monthly Charges $25.20
Estimated Monthly Tax TBD
Total Monthly Charges $25.20
________
Long story short, AT&T messed up their tax charge calculation... how can EST. TAX be $48.12???? Called a sales Rep only to be flogged off to call back later when the phone arrives with the billing note to confirm the charges and seek a credit.
-10 for AT&T Customer services! As unhelpful as always.
I believe that they charge tax based upon the full retail price.

I picked up on this deal last week and just got mine today. BEAUTIFUL phone. The transition from my iPhone 4 doesn't seem to even be an issue at this point. (I've had Android before so I'm fairly familiar...well, really familiar, with it so that might help). I figured 90 days is okay and mine line has insurance so that helps extend it as well correct? I'm content. Love it.
Trying to decide if I want to pre order from best buy or straight through ATT. I wish Amazon Wireless would announce something already!
Anywhoo . . . I don't have any real reason NOT to order from BB apart from the fact that I don't like and have sworn never to shop there again. Long, unrelated story, but so far I've made good to myself on that promise.
If I do order from BB, is there any downside? Am on contract with them in any way, or only through AT&T? Can I still take my phone to ATT for warranty claims or do I have to take it to BB?
Thanks!
You will not be in contract with BB in anyway. For warranty I'm not sure. If you order through ATT it ships out on 02/16 while supplies last. If you order through BB it ships out 02/19 with the official flip case (free) while supplies last.

Plus you can register your number(s) with Best Buy for their "Phone Freedom" promo and get a $50 gift card per line when you activate the new phone. Can use the card immediately on the phone purchase or on a future purchase. And you can upgrade anytime during 2012.
I registered my number and will use the $50 on the note. Registered my wife's number, who's due for an upgrade in late summer.

not everyone has the luxury of six lines but this is what we do
We have 6 lines on our family plan (5 phones, 1 pc connect {cross upgrade HELLO})...
1.Buy device, purchase buyback, get discount on buyback for purchasing black tie (cancel black tie after 30 days)
2.Sell back Device
3.Use store credit from the buy back to purchase new phone on another line due an upgrade
4.use left over amounts for other toys, or save towards next upgrade.
I always get the newest device
It's worked out pretty well so far. Currently we are out of upgrades until September..but have a few phones that are eligible for buy back should I decide to trade them in towards one device at full price (unlikely)
our next round of upgrades start in September..right about time for the s3
sept, oct, dec, feb, then the following January '13

Lost and stolen for most people isnt an issue, its broken screens. While ours is slightly more expensive if you do the 9.99 a month, there is NO deductible for breaking you phone. The note will be classified as a tier 3 in att's insurance which means its a $200 deductible on top of the $7 a month. That is just ****ing insane lol if you do our outright price for the protection at best buy its $170 for the two years, putting it right under $7 a month. All without a deductible and unlimited claims. And Im not just trying to push our protection because I work there because frankly, you wont be buying from my store so it wont affect me. I just fully support our protection, coming from 3 broken iPhone 4's and most recently a skyrocket.
Side note, I have a concession line with ATT which I cannot get BB protection on and broke the phone. $200 to replace the vivid lol I just cancelled the line and threw the vivid in the trash

Yikes. Idk which best buys you guys are going but theres tons of false info here. Right now, most phones fall into the rapid exchange program. With this, the phone is sent away and a refurbished phone is sent at the same time, making the turn around time about 2-4 business days. This does NOT fulfill your protection plan, meaning it is still active and can still be used again and again with no limit to the amount of claims. If you chose to send your phone as a repair instead of exchange the typical wait time is 14-30 days. If they are unable to repaid your phone in a cost effective manor to them or it exceeds 30 days they will issue you a gift card for the full retail value of the phone so that you can pick out a new one. This WILL fulfill the protection plan. So in a strange, completely misleading way, your initial statement was kind of accurtate. If we give you a $600+ gift card to replace your phone with a different model, yes your $170 protection plan is void. What would you expect?

that is one of the negative sides AND positive sides to the black tie protection plans.
in some cases it just isn't worth the expense (i.e. when the cost of the plan exceeds about the 50% mark, I don't buy it)
it's rare, but in some cases it just isn't logical.
In this case...$300 for the phone plus $170 for the plan...it's a hard choice.
You realistically are looking at $470 vs $600 which isn't much of a difference...unless you utilize the plan towards the end of its life

Sorry but that logic doesn't make much sense to me. Buy a phone at 300, break it and pay 650 that equals 950, which is twice the price of the upgrade and coverage for unlimited replacements. I guess its just that I see a lot of customers coming in after multiple broken screen replacements that I don't see the logic of buying other protection or buying outright replacements. To each his own tho I suppose

Consider BB insurance has no deductible. ATT charges a $200 deductible if you phone needs repair.
No you are right...my point being that breakage occurring in the first 6 months to a year the plan makes sense...beyond that it wouldn't .
Its a gamble...otherwise best buy wouldn't offers it haha. The odds are in their favor. Unless of course one pretty much knows they are going to break the phone, or manipulate the program later to get a new device.
Curious question, only because I receive multiple asnswers in store
Does best buy black tie cover cosmetic damage? I have been told yes and have been told no.
Is there a wear and tear clause? I know att has a wear and tear clause and can deny coverage. Reading their fine print I also notice they can deny if its manufacturering related as well.

In my store, and I assume in most stores, if a customer wants their phone to be sent out AND they have GSBTP, they are fully entitled to send it out. There is almost no way coverage can be denied, although the plan does specify that submersion and extreme damage (i.e, running it over with a car) is not covered. As long as the customer doesn't explicitly say that was the issue, it is usually fine.
I will say, in two years at BBYM, I have never seen a customer who purchased the protection be denied a phone being sent out. While my store is pretty good at making sure the customer is treated fairly, I can assume that BBYM wouldn't be gaining the market share it is if customers were not being treated properly.

Cool cool. I have not had any claims on mobile purchases. I have run into issues on laptops in the past (worn mouse tracker) where I was told it was wear and tear/ cosmetic and had to physically show them that the tracker no longer worked properly. The same with USB ports.
Thanks for chiming in!
Why not just pay $9.99 to get Best Buy Black Tie Protection?

Number one reason is the wait to get your phone back can be a week or two weeks sometimes a month the program is good but I can't go that long without my phone
Ask sprint about their options I think if you are just worried about cracked screens and stuff you can get protection through them for.that at like 4 bucks a month. If I am wrong someone interject. Reason I say 4 is I don't think the tep has raised yet and if u lock it in now it won't raise till you resign...
I do not have Black Tie but I heard that its pretty awful. At times they do not honor replacements.
Google it for more info.
I have Black Tie, but I gotta tell you: the whole "free loaner phone if yours has to be special ordered"? Count on rocking a crappy old Android or a BlackBerry for a little bit if your phone can't be initially just fixed....
Here's the rub: yours IS gonna have to be special ordered, if you need a replacement, no matter if your Best Buy has 500 new EVOs in stock: they won't let you have one of theirs. For me, for the times I had to use it, I waited about 2 weeks the first time (because it was "backordered", even though my Best Buy had plenty), and about 3 days the second.
Of course, you also are also DEFINITELY getting a refurb, count on that 100%.
*I still use it, like I said, but the guy at Best Buy won't tell you all these little "details", which, I think, is a bit shady.

I waited a month for a broken charger port on my OG Evo. Seemed like an eternity. Got it back and found that while they fixed the port, they blew out the light on the menu button (looked like it was missing a tooth) . Wasn't going to wait again with a beat up small lender phone.
Gave me a scratched and dented LG Optimus. Big ole scratch on the screen.

Lol at the people that don't like brick and mortar stores its that that is hurting the economy why buy it somewhere and pay a little extra and take a little extra time n pay tax when u can order it online for cheaper ans not pay tax. However I heard awhile back they where or are trying to put laws in place for sales tax on online items.

I actually just dropped sprints insurance and am going to straight up buy the black tie insurance for $170 for the 2 year protection. How sprint is Jacking up the price on everything you would be paying $264 for 2 years not including the $150-$200 deductible. Hell if I can save $100-$250 with BB with a refurbished phone and wait 2 weeks its worth it.

ZAGG has insurance as well. I think its 100$ for 2yrs and covers everything with a 100$ deductible. Might wanna look into that.

best buy also doesnt cover lost or stolen tho if you use mobile defense or sprint locator those arent a huge issue..
ckoadiyn Lol at the people that don't like brick and mortar stores its that that is hurting the economy why buy it somewhere and pay a little extra and take a little extra time n pay tax when u can order it online for cheaper ans not pay tax. However I heard awhile back they where or are trying to put laws in place for sales tax on online items.

yes cause buying online is different then buying in brick and mortar... the store actually makes more of a profit from online sales then store. and i paid taxes when i ordered from sprint tyvm.. the only thing being loss on online sales is taxes to the state but as someone who works in retail i can also tell you all the people using food stamps arent helping much either.. lord forbid they dont get their tax free soda chips and fat cakes

i use online cause its a convenience . i work over nights so i can shop while everything is closed and its usually cheaper cause they save on labor and other things a brick and mortar has to pay.. walk into a kmart.. have their website loaded and check prices, you will see that a lot of their stuff is more expensive in stores then online and they will not price match

Yeah and is rather pay extra to know that American people have a job even if it is a store and 5 extra dollars that's all im trying to say we have to many people to be cutting jobs and companies can pick up and leave over seas. Btw I agree 3rd sucks I work 12-8 am and it is hard a lot of.the time
But all and all price wise. BB is the cheapest if you don't mind waiting a couple days for a replacement refurbished phone and the fact they don't cover loss or theft. Anyone object?

Nope however I am interested in zagg..
I use http://www.squaretrade.com - $119 for two years protection after tax and 10% discount (coupon code TENFTEN).
You still pay a $99 deductible, and no coverage for theft or loss....but it has great reviews which is comforting. And at about $5/month...much better deal.

I had the black tie protection and I'll tell you why it isn't so hot.
First, doesn't cover lost or stolen phones.
Second, loaner phones require a $150 deposit.
Third, when I used the insurance to fix a broken charging port, I sent the phone in on Jan 2nd. The phone came back unrepaired 3 times. I finally got a replacement phone the second week of February. Believe me, I would have gladly gave a hundred dollars for a replacement from sprint.
Learned my lesson on best buy protection.

Ask sprint about their options I think if you are just worried about cracked screens and stuff you can get protection through them for.that at like 4 bucks a month. If I am wrong someone interject. Reason I say 4 is I don't think the tep has raised yet and if u lock it in now it won't raise till you resign...

The 4$ is still the same for service and repairs. However the replacement part of the TEP has gone up i believe.
And no the TEP will be raised for everyone but only in September if you sign up for TEP before july 17th.

Cancel any time free.
Those are the exact words I was told when buying my phone.
I got Black Tie.
Persuade me to cancel it so I can save money.

Number one reason is the wait to get your phone back can be a week or two weeks sometimes a month the program is good but I can't go that long without my phone

I work for Best Buy and am very familiar with the GSBTP plans (Geek Squad Black Tie Protection). What I am about to say is my own opinion and not that of Best Buy's.
That being said, I am going to give you an unbiased opinion on this because I see both sides to what you guys are saying. I bought my phone outright from BBY 2 days ago. Did I buy GSBTP? No, here is why: I like the lost or stolen option from Asurion/Sprint and I never had to use it until 2 weeks ago when someone stole my EVO 3D from my store. I tried remote locating it and all that crap and it didn't help. Paid the deductible through Asurion (should have been $100 but they told me $50) and got a replacement the next day.
As far as what GSBTP offers, yeah, it's not bad. But there are some things that need clarified in what has been said in this thread. The replacements now are all "Rapid Exchange", as in, you come into BBY and we fill out all the paperwork to get you a new phone. What happens is that the system then generates and order for a refurbished phone to be shipped that day while we send yours back to them at the same time. This means that you will get a new phone within 3 business days, not too bad.
However, the loaner phones are pretty crappy, as mentioned. But stores are suppose to charge you $50 for the loaner phone that gets returned back to you after you return it. They don't all do that, but they are supposed to, so keep that in mind that YMMV.
Everything else in the OP is right. BBY won't deny a claim unless you fully submerged it, nor would they even know that unless you told them. There is a girl at my store that literally drops and shatters her iPhone screen atleast 2 times a month and it's been happening for over a year now, never had an issue. Also, with GSPTB, you are entitled to a 1-time battery replacement on your phone as well which is awesome, but unfortunately doesn't apply to phones without removable batteries.
Hopefully this clarified things for you guys and gave you an idea of both sides to the GSBTP story

Thank you for the clarification.

ReZound is 79.99 with an upgrade/2-yr agreement
Does anyone know if this is only online or is it also in-store...I'm planning on purchasing the phone tomorrow but the Verizon Store is far and the store is obviously closed by now (10:10pm here in South Carolina). Any help or quick response would be great! Thank you!
i believe it's online only as of now. it'll go back up in price soon, though.
Alright...dang...thanks though!
If you want the Rezound and have the contract the $79 is a great deal. I wouldn't be afraid of doing it online. When I ordered mine they even comped the shipping (I ended up having to fight for it after the fact but won the minor battle) but you can ask them on chat if there is anyway to get the shipping free. The process for activation is pretty easy. One thing to note - if you have a 4G phone that you are replacing it with - they will not send out the sim card automatically. But your local store has those and can fix most anything if things get messy.
I ordered mine online a few months ago when it was $50. Phone was here 19hrs later. Popped sim card in and away it went

Hah you guys are getting ripped off if you pay more than $.01 for it that's what I got mine for
The $0.01 deal doesn't exist now... glad you got the deal...
I upgraded my Son's phone to the Rezound yesterday.. $79 + $30 upgrade fee = $109 which you pay upfront. He will have the phone most likely Tuesday.
Will see how long it takes him to S-Off.... I got it 2nd try.

Got mine from Bestbuy the other day. They matched the $80 price that Verizon had. I got $100 for my Inc 2 trade in. I got $50 freedom upgrade. That means I got $80 in my pocket as I left.
I think I beat you AshtonTS.
Go to Best Buy and ask them to price match, sell the beats earbuds because they're garbage and you've paid $30-nothing for your brand new rezound!
eh i paid $250 for mine on launch day..should've been 300, but on the website it said 250 because of a loyalty discount (not new every two because i was using an annual up anyway, so it was a weird unmentioned discount..)
i go int he store, ask if they can match it..at first they say no, so i'm like "ok i'll just go somewhere else that will, or order it online"
then another guy comes over and is like, well wait, lets see what we can do...turns out they were able to match it lol so maybe you can try in a store
Here's a question:
Why do American carriers charge such obscene amounts for cell phones?
For example, I can get an HTC One X with 5000 any network text messages, 2000 any network minutes, 5000 additional minutes when calling those on the same carrier and unlimited data (truly unlimited) for the equivalent of about $50 per month with NO upfront cost for the device (it's free).
I've seen adverts in the US that still ask for an upfront fee for the very outdated HTC Inspire and price plans that are laughable.
Am I missing something?

They are greedy.
Because the United States is roughly 40 times the size of the UK. Carriers figure they have to cover more rural geography while improving speed to satisfy customers in urban areas, particularly Verizon. Then pass the costs onto us.
Glad I got to pay a penny up front for my phone, but this two year contract without unlimited data is a steep price in the long run.
You seriously don't pay anything for your phones over in London, and get cheaper prices? Holy hell.... we get hit hard here in America. :-( Always a few $100 everytime we want to upgrade, unless we can hit a great deal, and even then... buying the phones the cheapest part of the process. I pay nearly $230 a month for 2 phones. *sigh*
I just looked into it to upgrade my finace to a S4 and they said not only do you have to pay the full device price(spread out over 24 months) but then you have to trade in your "old" device and get nothing in return? WTF. If I'm going to give you a device you are going to give me some money for it. Not to mention, other carriers knock off money on your bill for paying for your own phone, but not VZW. Geez. This company makes me wonder more and more why I am with them.
Sorry to vent, I just can't believe what they charge for. And I have been a customer since 2005.

You are only forced to trade the old device in if you haven't paid the full price for it. With Edge, you're eligible for an upgrade every 6 months (providing that 50% of the device's retail price has been paid). If you keep the phone for 24 months (or pay it off early), you're able to keep the phone when you get a new device.
I think what they're looking at is more of a phone rental system. You pay monthly for the phone until it's half paid, and then trade it in for a new phone. It pretty much looks like a car lease.

Pretty much sums it up accurately. For the most part the consumers have been the ones driving this trend fighting tooth and nail over the early termination fees and 2 year contracts.
Good job explaining it.:highfive:

Well then the CS rep I talked to yesterday doesn't know crap. Not surprising, but still. The we have about 8 months left on her contract for her driod 4, and she said for me to take advantage of the "edge" program I would have to trade that device in and pay my monthly installments for the S4. I would consider upgrading her early but the battery has taken a crap and I don't trust vzws return warehouse to not screw up again. So I was just going to use edge for her. But I'm not giving them a free device that I agreed to a two year contract over. I would rather just pay cash for the device than do that. So I guess they don't train their people for crap anymore.

Huh? I'm fine with a contract. I'm also fine paying full price. But if I am going to pay full price for the device I should get an extra discount like what tmo gives. If that is where you are going with the comment. I'm not sure 100% what you're getting at.

Sorry: To clarify, when you sign up for service you sign a two year contract, but at the end of those two years, unless you pay full price for a phone, you will be signing another two year agreement. At this point the carriers are acknowledging that users want phones more often than two years but two not want to pay full price. So in a sense you can know rent you phone and get a new one once you have paid ~50% of the full cost, however long that takes you (so long as it is more than 6 months).
