No choppiness at ALL on my end. Everything smooth so far. As smooth as my international note, Atrix, and SGS2.

This is expected unfortunantley =/
which apps did you freeze? I heard someone freezing certain apps and smemo stopped working
Yeah, I see it too, every once in a while, I tug to move to a new screen and I can see some lag. It's all over the place most of the time it's pretty minimal. I've had a couple of games that freeze for up to two seconds. Very annoying. I'd root but I'll wait till there is a method that doesn't increase the flash counter. I bet then this phone will fly without a hiccup.

I have just bought an S3 and I am actually quite disappointed in it's performance.
I have an S2 (Running stock ICS) and my S3 (Running stock JB) is quite noticeably slower, with terrible lag.
I am just wondering if this is normal, surely this should out perform an S2?
The 2 main area where it is considerably slower is opening up my contacts and MMS app.
From clicking the contacts icon it takes about 2 seconds to actually load the contacts, and the MMS app takes about the same time to load.
Also when opening my app drawer it is buggy and laggy when scrolling through.
I notice that I also have little to no free RAM, yes I know how android works and how it utilises RAM but it doesn't seem right to me.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm also running JB which should be smoother than ICS!
The firmware version I'm using is XXDLJ4
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
you are either doing something wrong or holding a faulty handset, apart from the delay in opening contacts app after heavy usage, s3 will absolutely smoke s2.

Thanks for such a prompt reply!!
It totally smokes my S2 in benchmark tests but in real usage it doesn't.
Is there any way of checking if it's faulty?
Like maybe an app that checks all 4 cores are running properly and GPU is functioning properly?

try disabling media service, its one among the reasons for possible lag, disable power saving mode if enabled
turn off Facebook sync and ripple effect
this helped me to get free ram

mine is the same it just feels slow and laggy there's a one x in the house as well and it blows away the s3.
my s3 running ics was unusable jb helped but did not fix the phone completely I am very disappointed with it, but also stuck with it.

I don't have Facebook on my phone and I turned off the ripple effect as soon as I turned it on lol
Im shocked. How is this possible?? I bought my phone 10days ago, till now I have not seen any lag anywhere except for the contacts and phone. It will be fixed though. Moreover it fly's with the JB update, I love scrolling through the screens its damn smooth.
I doubt if you got the correct handset . Surely something is wrong. Was it like this from the first day???

The screen scrolling is fine, it's nice and smooth. It's the opening up of contacts, phone and MMS that is really slow.
I've got the latest UK JB update so it should be a lot snappier, in my opinion.
And it's definitely a S3, no doubt there. Yup it was slow right from the get go.
It's the crazy high RAM use that is annoying the hell out of me
Oh, Then go to developer options and select background process limit to 4.That should help, but if you are freaking out about the RAM, then don't cause that's how android uses the ram.
I am currently Using Liquid smooth ROM (AOSP) . I have no contacts or phone lag. Use it if you like AOSP
Use an ASOP or miui Rom! JB onS3 is good but Sammy needs to improve.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
yes your s3 should blow your s2 away and NO you shouldn't have to tweak or remove apps, live wallpaper etc.
First try a factory reset...best and simplest advice for performance issues.
Then, and only then should you need to try to find out what apps or settings are causing problems (to be honest no settings should retard performance that badly).
Then...and its a longer shot is a faulty rom installation which a reset won't fix. In that case you'll need to reflash DLJ4 from a reliable source, here on XDA, samfirmware, checkfus etc.
If still problems then your issues are hardware related and you need to visit your provider who'll have access to a maintenance centre, or even samsung themselves...assuming you're still running stock. If not you need to use a guide to restore your phone status to unmodified and a flash a stock rom first.
Good luck

you are not alone.......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958171 ....and this is really annoying
Mine is REALLY fast. More responsive than ics for sure.
Full wipe, stock and..
That's it
Also loading a list with 50 or 100 contacts and some having photos can not be immediate unless its already in the cache..
Definetly do a factory reset, usually fixes most of your problems.
If its being all sluggish i would suggest running "Paranoid Android [ROM]" on it, which is amazing. Or if your looking for something lightweight go, "SuperNexus".
Either way, also go to " settings > dev options " and then change all the Animation Scale (From 1x) to 0.5x it will make the animations faster.
Your phone is not faulty.
The stock contacts and sms app made by samsung are too heavy and indeed open very slow. You should try exDialer or jelly bean sms app which can be found on Play store.

What he said. Samsung have done something with the contacts, phone and mms app which take 2-3 seconds to load. Stupid. I think this is only on JB though, hopefully they fix it soon.

I only notice slowness with power saving mode enabled. Make sure its not and it should. I would use roms as close to stock as possible, IMO. Flashing and using aosp amd miui like others have stated will probably cause more niggly bits of annoyance then rectify current issues youd only replace them with new ones. Unless of course you have a rom addiction and flash every second day like me

No problems here, but have changed a lot.
Disabled S Voice, froze all Samsung applications. Same with services like remote controls, tracking etc. Deleted bin/kiesexe since I never use KIES and the extra ram is handy to have (ROM cooks, here is an idea, ask users if they want KIES on install, if not delete it)!.
Install a good kernel and try running a SQL optimization script to speed up databases. Lastly don't touch supercharger etc to get more free ram (that is wasted ram). It'll slow down Contracts and the Dialer since it removes them from ram. They are loaded at startup for a reason.
Also lastly, turn off unneeded Startups
You should be able to find a list of unneeded services and tasks, somewhere on the forum
You'll understand why, when you look at the list of unneeded bloatware, services etc running, why it is slow. shame on Samsung.
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -
try wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. worked for me
Is it just me guys or do you also encounter some random stuttering while playing music in stock music player? It's just a quick stutter but really annoying since it happens randomly.

Try Settings->Audio->Advanced Tweaks->Audio Buffer Size-> Large or Huge.

Tried. Didn't help
Even tried b changing audio priority to highest.
Specially happens if I'm browsing something and some picture starts loading.
Doesn't happen in my year old iPod.
And I don't think it used to happen in ICS
I had a similar problem which i think i worked out to happen when a message was coming through or a application was updating, leading me to think it was a low RAM problem so maybe this could be whats happening, if alot of things are open in the background. Either that or processor isnt working fast enough. If your rooted and have a custom kernel try changing the profile to maybe a performance one?
But this didn't happen in ICS... jellybean was supposed to speed up our device not to make it crawl... looks like touchwiz is really  :banghead:

I'd say probably not - I can confirm I've got this issue too, after upgrading to JB. I can't see why so many with the same problem would mean that all our phones are faulty.
Has anyone got a resolution for this?
Mine does it too.. Its just cause of too low ram or something. Never had this problem on S2. This is just samsungs way of saying "upgrade to the S4"
This phone would be brilliant without all these microlags because of low ram..

Same for me since the JB upgrade in Poweramp and Play music. I thought it was something to do with my setup but had the sudden death failure on my phone so started with a clean install when it came back. Problem is still there with my new 32GB mboard and I haven't done any restores of apps.

It seems like some apps when they give ask CPU ( or RAM ) for something, the focus shifts from the music to that.
Like when weater widget asks polls for weather or something.
Funny how my 6 years old SE Walkman w800i was able to play for hours without a micro shutter.
And this almighty phone can't do a simple task,
It's worse when I try to browse and play music.

I agree. I've noticed it mainly when getting notifications through. It seems to me that it's down to bad RAM management. My Desire had less ram but played music fine with ICS.

Reply ****ing frustrated with the phone.
Can't even listen to song on PowerAmp while surfing Facebook in the app or browse lightly on Dolphin .
The songs start to shutter at random places.
And if I press home button, Nova launcher reloads.
I'm on stock LLC with stock kernel.. Rooted.
Any solutions?
I tried many things, new roms, new kernels. All megawipes and stuff, nothing works..
Same problem here . It's so annoying. Given the great number of people with the same problem, I don't think it is a phone problem but a JB one!! Please!!! Help!!! I already tried changing the buffering size and even though it did help a little, I still get some stuttering!
Here's what I think I've worked out so far.
The problem has only arisen since JB and was fine in ICS. A change of handset has the same issue with a clean install of JB.
It seems to happen across different music apps but tunein radio is fine so isn't a specific audio app. Could be that it's linked to a particular file format, e.g. mp3?
When it happens in Poweramp I can see the buffering constant, it never fully loads. Increasing the buffer size and priority doesn't help.
Notifications can make it stutter but it seems that the problem is already there beforehand from the buffering.
Clearing RAM doesn't seem to help, however rebooting the phone will improve it for a while.

I had the same problem.
Deleting the musicplayer widget on the homescreen fixed my problem.
Try deleting it or any other widget you have on your homescreen.
Think I've got a solution in poweramp. After a reboot go to settings/misc/tweaks and select keep service. It hasn't had any skips since I've done that and battery life/performance still seems OK. Early days yet though.

I'm on latest cm10.1 (official) and I'm experiencing some weird artifacts when scrolling up or down through my timeline. It doesn't seem to happen to other apps but Twitter. However, doing a web search for this issue, chrome went crazy showing complete black pages with weird squares. Since it happened on every tab I was afraid my phone was the issue, but I pressed home button and my launcher was there and it didn't have any artifacts or glitches.
I'm guessing there's something wrong with cm because scrolling is really slow and choppy on some apps, so this could be the reason, bad graphics driver or something like that.
I like cm because I love my phone as lightweight as possible, but this issue is a deal breaker for me. I'm a bit scared that it might even force a brick bug and damage my phone somehow
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Hi,
Just something that's bugging me, I'm on stock ROM, and with apps like Facebook or where lots of images are loaded, there is an ever so slight stutter when scrolling. Is this normal? Its very slight, but quite noticeable. I would've thought such a powerful phone would be able to handle something as trivial as scrolling some I images.
Cheers,
Jack
Is it just the fb app being a crappy port? Fast for facebook which loads the same images does it perfectly smooth

The problem is due to image loading effect. If you scroll while the image is loading, you tend to get the lag. Its also depend on how good your internet connection is. Slow connection tend to load the images and data slowly. Thus, causing a lag effect.
Thanks for your reply, yeah that's what I thought. Although its hard to believe a quad core processor can't load images whilst updating the ui at the same time. At least its not just me with this problem!
or are there any roms/kernels that tackle this problem?

I'm a flash addict. I try out most of the unique ROMS, no matter how many ROMS I tried, the Facebook app still the same(based on performance). I'm pretty sure the problem is with the app, not ROMS. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I would suggest Purelook ROM by @ksr007. Very stable, smooth and very good battery life. One of my most favourite ROM
i have the same burden. you can use the m.facebook.com from the stock browser, its much faster and no lags at all.
mine isn't slight but too much lag when scrolling. that's why i gave up using that application. Friendcaster also loads much faster.
Ah I've nailed it, I had "adjust screen tone by analysing images" checked, unchecked that and now its much better
I guess it eats CPU checking all the images
Is anyone else experiencing lag? Even with 3gb of ram I can still feel the lag. I'm rooted with stump root and have the nova launcher installed but when opening up youtube or yahoo mail it takes a good 3 seconds before the app opens up. When opening up other apps it lags about half a second and the same goes for closing apps.
Am I the only one with this issue?
Pretty sure that's not lag it's normal and also depends on your internet connection
I'm experiencing some lag as well coming from a rooted galaxy note 2 with custom ROM & kernel. I'm afraid there aren't many options until developers start working on this wonderful new toy of ours.

So because the app takes a while to open means lag isn't the issue? It takes about 2 seconds for the torch to start also after tapping on the widget which seems weird to me.

As far as the torch goes, that's app related and not the phone. Some of those apps just take longer to launch, especially those torch apps. Saw this on my moto x as well. Try another torch app.
