i'm thinking of getting the Galaxy s3 but i'm having a bit of trouble deciding which one. before i continue i would like to sate a couple factor :
I have att, 3gb of data
I live in New York so i have LTE coverage everywhere
i barely use data for anything other than downloading an app, browsing the web, or watching something on youtube
i'm a major gamer so thats were getting the international one with its Exynos chip v.s the us one with snapdragon s4
So a couple of questions i wanted to ask you guys was:
Does 1gb vs 2gb of ram really make a difference and improve speed, i don't multitask a lot just like 2 or 3 apps
how good is the snapdragons 4 actually?( Give your opinion, and if you ever had lag when you used it)
How good is the snapdragon s4 for gaming, ex. GTA3, Max Payne, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, N.O.V.A 3, and if the games ever felt laggy or a little glitchy?
Also they are more developers for the international version
thanks in advance
If you are not worried too much about the LTE speeds than your best bet is i9300. Exynos 4 Quad is definitely better for gaming ... I have the AT&T variant just because I wanted to have unlimited 4G plan (grandfathered unlimited 3G upgraded to unlimited 4G now).
Also, if u have ORD then i9300 is the best choice hands down. I can speak from my own experience when I chose to get i9100 over local US variants. The amount of developer support for the international models is mind boggling. You don't get that much support (as quickly) for the US variants.
So better gaming, better developer support. I would say go for i9300 ... Hope this helps.

What's soooooooooooooooo good about the international one that makes it worth the $600. Is the difference in speed and performance really better on the international one?

I have the US version and I game quite a bit. I frequently play Max Payne, Shadow gun, Dead trigger and GTA3. I don't experience any lag what so ever. I couldn't make this thing lag if I wanted to. The 2Gs of RAM makes a world of difference IMO.

For ME the development alone is the biggest reason why i went for the international, we have so many recognized devs working on so many ROM's and its nice to get the first updates as soon as they come. The quad core is a bonus, as i have never seen a hint of lag or stutter on this thing. The 2gb of ram vs 1gb of ram isnt really that big of a deal to me, phones run perfectly fine on 1gb but 2gb is awesome too. This is why i chose the I9300, its different for everybody but i love this beast.
I come to these forums a lot to see what the US version has cooking and so far it looks like things are getting ready to pick up! Task and Ktoonz (sp?) are awesome devs.
If the $600 is out of your budget, then the convo is done. I mean what else do you need people to say?
Please don't take me being blunt, for rudeness.

No problem. Trust me, your going to love it. You probably won't even want to sell it for the international version. The US version handles everything just fine. In fact, tests have shown where the S4 processor actually performed faster in some situations. Most phones can't even utilize 4 threads yet. Put simply, you get all the performance of the quad-core (and then some), plus amazing battery life. We've seen video proof of the performance. With the S4 Qualcomm has introduced a new architecture, and it's cutting edge. It's based on the same instruction set as the new ARM A15 processors, which gives it a significant advantage over it's competitors. It will do tasks faster, and more efficiently than the rest of the current generation hardware. So performance is just as good overall and battery life should be better.

Don't believe everything you hear the s4 chip is a beast. Not as good as the sammy quad but i say better than tegra. Either way a duel core phone going toe to toe with either of theses processors speak for itself. It's a notice different from last generation duel core. It handles games without a hitch battery life omg all day long . This phone isn't perfect but it's Pretty darn close. I own the evo 4g lte with the s4 chip and it runs sense4 like butter no lag get the phone enjoy it. Development isn't where the international version is because the rest of the world78% to be exact got the same phone and little usa has to have there altered to work with lte. Plus they got theres before us. The u.s galaxy s3 development will pick up fast the delays and Verizon just getting it a few days plays a roll to.

They both are dual core

So other than the fact the galaxy s3 has 2gb of ram, what's the difference?

Not to be rude but you need to research the specs yourself, someone could say one has magic faeries inside for all you know.
The One X has a super lcd2 IPS display, while the GS3 has a samoled hd+ screen.
The One X has no removable storage or battery, while the GS3 has both.
The One X has 1gb of RAM, while the GS3 (USA) has 2gb.
The One X has Sense, we have TouchWiz

I would hold off. I don't like the build quality of samsung products. As crazy as it sounds the s3 is already getting dated.

Yah i had the droid x before this and i wasnt expecting the screen size to drop, should looked at one before buying it online

I don't care. I love rezzy either way.
No because I already have 4g and a phone that meets my requirements. I have no idea why people are talking about quad core in this thread, I haven't had any problems running anything on my Droid X even. People are acting like they are trying to play crysis or WoW on their phones, in the end they need to remember that its a PHONE and not a COMP.
I would REALLY like to know why people have the need for a quad core phone? A few answers would be greatly appreciated. Maybe dial out faster? Pick up a call quicker? All joking aside, I'd really like to know.
After owning the Galaxy Nexus i will never buy a Samsung phone again, I paid $480 for it and gave it away for free that's how terrible it is!
Plus HTC is coming out with a beast soon so i'm holding off for that
I wouldn't upgrade to a Samsung device due to the radios. I would however consider upgrading to the new HTC phablet or whatever Nexus phone is coming out this year.

Quad cores offer greater performance and also greater battery life believe it or not I'm not trying to run crysis but hate to tell you but that thing you hold in your hand is more of a computer than a phone. We want quad core and two years after that we want 6 cores... And so on. Bill Gates once said 64mb of ram is more than we will ever need now look at us with 16gb. In other words, if we stop pushing, we will never see how great this smart phone technology can be in the future
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
I have a GS3. It owns the Rezound.
Battery life is about 2x better for me. Signal is very good. Much better than the Nexus. Not quite as good as the Rez, but it is worth the tradeoff.
No lag even on stock touchwiz (which actually is pretty nice).
Thinner & lighter.
Screen VERY visible outdoors.
Meh, I like the GS3 but unless my rezound broke and I had to pay for a warranty replacement I probably won't be buying one... It's not enough of an upgrade in my eyes to spend more than an extra 100 dollars on. It's def a nice phone though no doubt about it. I liked the GS2 a lot as well, and it's still a good phone.
In reality the rezound isn't really that dated yet (eh more so on paper kind of). I mean it's not a 1XL or a GS3 but it's close enough and still has higher ppi and than both, now I'm hoping I can hold out for the next GREAT phone that Verizon gets. Like the rumored HTC phablet thing or the next Nexus if its like a GS3.5ish(or better) type phone.

-10 cool points for calling the Nexus a GS 2.5. After seeing how choppy my friends one x is, not really impressed with the s4/225 combo.
If the radios didn't suck I would. But since you're sitting on an upgrade... Wait it out and see what's out there.

As you can see here the nexus 4 scores much lower than the galaxy s3 running the dual core s4. These benchmarks shouldn't even be taken with a grain of salt if the dual core s4 out performs the quad core by such a large margin. Now I know this involves the 4, but I wonder if the same could be applied to the nexus 10. For example the nexus 10's sunspider benchmark is about half that of the chromebook and they have the same cpu at the same clock speed.
Look here how much higher the optimus g scores than the nexus 4.

I know the international version is quad core, but it doesn't use the s4 quad. The tmobile galaxy s3 uses snapdragon s4 dual core. The resolutions are the same I believe due to the three buttons for home and such on the display. Also the resolution wouldn't affect sunspider or other cpu benchmarks.
On the nexus 4 the cpu under clocks itself because it gets too hot.

I didn't read anything where they mentioned the cpu underclocking itself. How can this be true if the optimus g is almost it's clone and doesn't have these issues? If I could get some links it would be greatly appreciated.

I have to believe that the performance in only going to get much much better with future updates from Google.. The result clearly show how premature the kernel is for 4.2.. Show in the N10 and the N4

in all honesty, i would not put it past the iphone 5 to beat the S3.
even if you ignore the benchmarks, which a lot seem to imply that the A6 gives even the 5250 in the nexus 10 a run for it's money in some (rare?) cases. (although the case of optimization argument may be made),
note that the PowerVR graphics chip in the iphone 5 is absolutely fantastic, as it seems apple are focusing more on bumping up graphics than CPU in the new A6.
(you should also bare in mind that it seems the A6 is A-15 based, compared to the A9 in the S3 international)
speaking of which. i'm pretty sure the dual core S4 in the S3 you have would be slower in most cases than the i9300 anyways,
so this idea that your s3 could beat the iphone 5 in raw power is a bit hopeful,
and definitely not in terms of games, loading apps ect, purely because of the whole iOS has less devices, ect ect.

you may be right there, but I think the nexus 4's gpu is better than the one in the iphone 5. I mean look at glbenchmark, the nexus 4 has a higher fps running at a higher a resolution(egypt hd onscreen). Also the cpu is a quad core krait so I highly doubt the iphone can compete there. The only reason I bring this up is because you were claiming that the iphone 5 has a fanatastic gpu, when in reality it's very good, but I'm not sure it's the best.. You could argue that the iphone 5 scores higher in the fill rate and the triangle throughput, but I feel like these ones may be easier to rig as they are the ones that don't actually render a game.
I for one believe the s3 is still at the top or equal with the nexus 4 or note 2....maybe note 2 has a minor edge but as far as performance and speed I feel like the s3 is still and the top of the rankings I scored higher than the note 2 on the antutu app easily....but what are your thoughts?

How do you figure that? In what way is it inferior?
The N4 has a better CPU, GPU, screen and software.
The S3 has removable storage, that's about all that is better.
We all like our phones but lets not talk sh*t.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I wouldn't say Nexus 4 is inferior, but has it's drawbacks. Non-removable battery, no possibility of adding storage and maybe lack of LTE, but that's the end of it. Well, and its manufacturer is LG, that's a drawback for me, but thats all.
The fact that it sells for 300$ is it's main selling point, besides it's processing power (which I am beggining to consider is starting to be overkill). 2Gb of RAM is fairly nice too. If I did not own a SGSIII rigth now, I would be kicking my ass in a rush for getting one, that's for sure.

Removable battery is meh, got the nexus 7 and was concerned about freezes from overclocking too much and not being able to pull the battery, but if you hold the power button for like ten seconds it does a hard reboot so problem solved.
Storage is a kick in the ass alright but I have unlimited data and my music on Google music so I can get around that problem too and as for LTE well Ireland doesn't have LTE so that's a moot point.
It all depends on each persons situation I guess.

I believe the top 3 phones are the S3, N4, and Note 2...I would like to have a Note 2 but just to expensive....I played with one for a while and it just felt like a big S3...but the N4 seems to be different or more interesting in my opinion and the price is just right lol....but you cant go wrong with any of these phones...they are all awesome...
S3 have better screen then nexus 4..............read reviews
s3 is iphone killer , so yeap its stacking up pretty high in the competition
S3 still wins it for me. Hate those onscreen buttons. Hate that n4 doesn't have support for SD card. My 16 internal is filled with game and apps data while my 32g sd card only has 4gigs memory left from backups and videos, etc. My S3 rarely lags and at 1.6GHz, my benchmarks are all higher than that of stock Note2. Multiwindow support is coming so the only real advantage of note2 is the RAM which i think is overkill because i never fill up the 1gig i have bec i removed all the freaking bloatwares from samsung. I dont know though if it would be enough when the multiwindow comes.

We must understand that manufacturers are looking at profits and increasing utility is their main focus. Consider that there were people asking this same question when the s2 came out. Yes, it was "the best" in most areas, design, hardware etc. But that was then, this is now with the s3 replacing the s2 as the name suggests. We must consider the future developing prospects for the Android as a platform and what they hold and how soon manufacturers will release this "new technology". The reason why I put new technology in inverted commas is because when manufacturers introduced new products as "new", they have long been aware of the latter but only introduce it to the market now as it is better (more competitive) that the current devices.
Manufacturers are able (based on demand) to determine when a product is at its peak (in terms of sales) and so introduce a "new product" which they have developed long ago to gain new demand thus maintaining or increasing profits, the latter is most likely.
So in terms of the utility of our devices, yes we have "the best" but for how long is the real question? The new s4 is already developed IMHO but they are just waiting to release, I'm sure they monitor this forum to see what user demands are in the future, I "too much lag here, multi windows there, device getting too hot)" and so they adapt their product to meet user requirements thus increasing utility and potential profit.
Right now (given that there are no subjectively better products on the market) I am very happy and would not what anything else but let's see the "new" stuff in the future.
The G2 thread is quite popular with some good discussion going on, so I thought I'd start a discussion about my next device; the Note 3. It's going to be introduced at an unboxing event on Sept 4th in Berlin, Germany; just ahead of the IFA 2013 the conference the previous two Notes have been introduced from. The specifications are hefty:
5.68″ Full HD Super AMOLED display (1920 x 1080)
Octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz (depending on the market)

I'll be using Verizon's Device Payment Program to both upgrade my device early and retain my unlimited data.
Who's in? Who's not? Why or why not?
Note 3 ?
Nope. The next device is always cooler. Once you come to grips with that, you won't pine for the newest thing.

Really this is stupid it hasn't even been announced. It could be Christmas before this phone comes to Verizon ask then.

My next device surely won't be from Samsung.

It's not a matter of chasing the next device. It'll be a two for one upgrade. I'll be giving my S4 to my son.

Try using some punctuation before you call something stupid.

As the OP says...why???
No. Sorry, but a screen/device that large is simply too big. Also, Samsung can pack as much horsepower they want under the hood in terms of specs, but they really should focus on the software optimization to get a truly great phone. That's where performance is lacking.
With that said, no, the S4 will stay for now. Outside of a bigger device and screen, I probably wouldn't notice much difference.

As the guy above me basically states, the phone is crap if the software isn't optimized. In a perfect world I wouldn't resort to modding my device. However, with all the stuff Samsung loads in I need to because I feel a degradation in performance compared to previous devices. Samsung just makes the software and hopes that the high end specs will make for a smooth experience. This just won't cut it anymore. People can complain about the iPhone all they want but with the "meh" specs its packing Apple makes up for it with their excellent software optimizations. Not sure what my next device would be though.

Nope, not me. I'm waiting for the Note 4, which is gonna be so much better than the S5. Haha Just kidding...
Seriously though, I'm probably going to jump on the Note 3 when it does come out. I like having the newest thing... and I love me big screens!
I am considering the HTC One Max if it is indeed VZW bound

Sonys xpera z ultra would be nice. If they found a way to lock down the s4 for say ever then the note 3 will most likely be the same way on launch.. unless of course they launch a developer edition when the s5 comes out lol
