I changed my notification ringtone to cheeper or something like that and the phone continues to use sherbet which was the factory setting. Any ideas?

did you set it for the specific application? maybe its a different app tone u need to change.
I found it. There is extra settings within the stock text messaging app that allows you to change the sound. My past phones just use the default notification sound. First samsung... Thanks.

I hate how my screen turns on when I receive an sms message. I only need the notification icon in the taskbar and the led blink and if I disable the notifications from the settings the screen does not open but I loose the other notifications as well. Any ways to fix this?

Bump
interested in that too
Don't know if it's possible with the stock app, however if you're willing to use a 3rd party app, Go SMS does have an option to keep the screen off and quite possibly other apps do too.

switch to HANDCENT SMS, it is the best sms app, i am using it for a year now. Go to setting and disable pop-up. Now when you receive a message, it will vibrate, led will blink, but screen will not turn on. You will ses the message in the notification bar.

That's what I'm using right now but I want to minimize the use of third party apps as much as possible . Plus with handcent sms when I send a picture or video it doesn't work. I have to use the regular messaging app in order for my mms to leave successfully .

Still no solution for this one. I don't want to use handcent or go sms for two reasons. First I like the simplicity if the stock samsung app and second I use the direct call feature that only works with stock app. There must be a way to hack the default messaging app to stock opening the screen when receiving a message.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
BUMP. This feature is sooooo annoying!!!!
It irritates me also. I've used Handcent on every device in the past, but I don't want to for some reason on this one. I actually rather like the stock messaging app.
I suppose I'll go back to Handcent. The screen on is annoying, plus it creates a temporary wakelock that drains the battery even more.

where do i go to change the SMS sound? I went to the notification sound and change it but it didn't happen. The SMS sound is set on "whistle" right now.
I know for most Android phones, SMS sound comes from notification sound. Since that did not work for you, what kind of application are you using? Are you using WhatsApp?

Im not using any app at all. I'm on stock rom. When I change sound on the Notification ringtone it work when i get emails or other app notification. The SMS sound is set on "whistle"
If stock open the message app and go into its settings to change the notification sound. It should work and yes the whistle is annoying

Thank you. I was able to change the sms notification sound.
Anyone else notice that you cant change the vibration pattern on this phone?
I changed it and it still uses the default vibration when a text comes in?
Confirmed on 2 phones so far.
No. I can very well change and make a custom one too.
And the one I have chosen applies when a call comes. I am sure.
I thought it is only for calls?

Setting one to a contact doesn't work either. Test it please with a text if possible

I tried to set the vibrate to heartbeat and doesn't work on text messages.

Works fine for me
The subject says is all. I can't find a setting within the app to change the notification sound. Regardless of the system's default notification sound, the app always plays the "hint" sound when I receive an email. It's a very subtle tone and I'd like to change it to something I can actually hear.
I've tried clearing defaults, the cache, and deleting the Exchange account the setting it up again, but no luck. Either something is wrong with my phone or this is just how this phone works. (Which, if it's the latter, is really stupid.)

I already did that, which is why this is so odd. The notification sound does not change regardless of the sound selected.

Yeah, I figured it out now. Thanks, all. I didn't realize that the setting was buried in the Personalize menu. I ran stock on my OG DInc for the longest time and am shamefully unfamiliar with certain parts of Sense. Plus, you could customize the notification sound from the Email app on older versions of Sense.

Same here (from OG Dinc, but ran SkyRaider). It took me forever to find that the first time on this phone.

Turn off notifications and use an app like light flow.
Use a different MMS app.
Many ways to skin a cat here.

This.
I use Handcent and there is an option in settings to set the "Do Not Wake Screen" setting.
You need to go into your stock SMS app settings and uncheck notification options though.
As suggested by another user, turn off notifications in the sms app. Download an app called sms popup in the play store. Go into that app. Disable the popup notification. Set the rest of the settings such as the notification icon, notification sound, etc. With all that done, you essentially have the stock app behaving the way you want. I've been rocking this solution along with light manager for a few weeks and it's flawless.
