[Q] Color banding for gray gradients? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

After receiving my Note, everything seemed fine, although the screen had a very warm effect. I didn't mind so much, as I like warmer whites and color anyways.
However, what kind of annoyed me was the color banding that was especially evident in the notification bar (the very top and very bottom). My sister's Galaxy S2 does not have this problem, nor does my Samsung Captivate. I'm guessing this may be because of the screen resolution, but I hope it isn't because I have a defective screen. Anyone else have this problem?

200+ views and no one can comment on it? Anyone?

I have a similar issue, but assuming the picture above is a screenshot, wouldn't that rule out the screen as the culprit and implicate the actual design of touchwiz itself?

I see the same thing on the notification bar, but I don't see it on screens that appear to be specifically designed for the note. That leads me to believe they were lazy in the implementation of screens used in smaller devices. Instead of recreating them for the higher resolution, they look like they're just being stretched.

Is that a screen capture or did you take a photo using another device

Looks regular homie.

I agree this is just the lazy implementation. Open the phone and look at the dial pad buttons. There is no banding on those. They are present on the Android stock keyboard however. But I don't think it is a defect of the phone.

If you put your display on 100% and look carefully at the dial pad buttons, the banding is there as well.

Yep, I see this also on other gradiented GUis.

Software UI issue i.e TouchWiz, not our screens.

I issue seems to be better on Saurom project rom. My dropdown menu used to look the same like the screenshot above. Now its gone completely.

[Q] anyone have slight horizontal banding on their optimus?

I can't see the banding all the time but when I do it's very annoying. I'm going to try and post some pics today. Is it normal or can I get it fixed?
No one at all has this problem or has heard of it?
what do you mean by banding? describe it properly
in my case specifically i can see faint gray horizontal lines going across the lcd on my phone about every quarter inch. it is especially noticeable on a white screen. i emailed the ebay seller and they stated that it was normal and i would not be able to return or exchange the phone since it was sold as new. i emailed LG about it and they said it would cost anywhere from $40-$100 if it was actually a flaw. like i said in the first post, i'm going to try and get some pictures up soon (hopefully in a couple hours after i get some sleep) to graphically show what i'm talking about.
DarkKnight62, if it helps in any way: I have observed this on my screen too. The faint gray lines made me believe text lines were burned in the LCD screen, but that would have been pretty much impossible, since I don't read that much on my phone. I can only see this effect when I use the screen as a flashlight - white background and 100% luminosity and it doesn't bother me at all.

even I read a lot on my phone but I keep the brightness lower than the lowest default. so I dont have this problem.
I think, It's due to surface dithering. See our phone is not 16m colors its 256k so the colors that are missing are to calculated and displayed and that's why the horizontal band if the we set no surface dithering (custom roms mik) the banding just vanishes but the quality of display is reduced. All the linear gradient colors are no more gradient.

I do have this gray lines horizontally and vertically if you see the phone far and carefully only in white background... when its near, the lines just dissapears to my eyes, (like if they get used to the display)
"gray horizontal lines going across the lcd on my phone about every quarter inch"
I don't think he is talking abouth the lines between pixels.
can you post a picture so we can understand what are you talking about?
@DarkKnight62 I had a same problem. If you are using francos kernel (and/or roms that have it integrated) it's more visible - very noticeable on wallpapers with smooth gradients. Try switching to stock or mik_os CM7 mod 6.5.4 stable (which is great)...
@soberspine This is example:

Anything wrong with the display, or is this normal in SAMOLED+?

Please refer to the picture below. Do you spot any abnormalities with my SAMOLED+ display? The yellow tint is gone after flashing to 2.3.5, but the area in the lower left is still showing a lighter tone--like a right triangle; so does a small area on the upper left. Also, the brightness (as I've noticed in other S2's) is not evenly distributed across the screen. These problems are hardly visible in normal use, but it becomes visible in grey backgrounds, and notifications area, and lowest brightness in web browser. Please let me know, thanks.

so, what do you all think? Please let me know thank you.
Mine looks exactly like that: triangle in bottom left, splotch in top right, and whole left seems a little dimmer than the rest. I haven't installed any updates & bought mine in South Africa; where did you get yours? I was honestly under the impression that AMOLED was the technology to go for, but now I'm not so sure anymore.
At first I was going to ignore the lighting defects and the pink tint in the center of camera images as there aren't that severe, but now I've found my phone's earpiece probably has a problem too. It makes a crackly noise during calls that sounds like something's loose in the speaker, so I reckon it's time to send this one back...
Update: I got mine replaced today due to the speaker problem, and the new one has neither the triangle nor the splotch. It is still darker down the left side of the screen though, maybe even a bit more so than on the old one...
I had exactly the same issues (well, not exactly as mine were worse). I had to replace it twice. Now I have one without this issues, no yellowish border and little to no banding.
The guys at the service told me that if there is any problem now, I can get a new phone right away, but considering how many people have display problems, I would rather repair this one. It's display is suspiciously perfect...

[Q] Black Fragmentation color on display - is it just mine?

So I am seeing some color issues with my SII
Not sure if it's just the way it is (because I am coming from the LG G2x which had the most amazing display you can ever imagine), or is it just my phone.
The funny thing is that even though I am attaching a screnshot, obviously YOU will not be able to see the issue (since of course, the pic itself is fine, and it is the display that makes it wavey...)
I am not even sure I am explaining myself the right way.
Wavy colorts, uneaven, almost cartoonish-like, smeary.
It is most apparent with darker shades
(U can't see it here)

Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus displays exaggerate colors and shades, and that is it's key feature. Not sure about your phone, but if you think something's wrong with your phone, go check with your service provider.

Thank you!!!
Found some info here, i wonder if mine is one of these....

I hope more members will have something to say, perhaps they have experienced this as well.
I was also thinking whether this can (hopefully) be a kernel issue or color calibration issue? I know that some kernels has effect on the colors, but I am out of my field here and completely wrong
The weird thing is that light colors are perfect. When GRAY or BLACK, it just looks bad.

I've got something similar to that.
It's not noticeable in a well lit environment but if I'm in a dark room and have a black screen on my sgs2, some blotches seem darker than the rest of the screen.
I wouldn't be too bothered about this if it was just one or two but there's one large one and a bunch of smaller ones scattered around the screen.
Thanks!
I wish I could upload a photo to show it, but (funny enough), my only camera is my phone's camera (a single student - what r u gonna do?!)
This is especially noticeable when I take a picture or when I use the Music app (pictured above), where there is huge smears of color going from the dark to the lighter.
I hate to even imagine it, but I think I will have to depart from my SII if this is something that isn't fixable. If no one else experience this, I will get a new SII
(i don't know anyone that has the SII so I have no one to compare it to)
Managed to take some pics
Hope U can see it:
Look at the bottom discoloration:
All menus with shades of grey and black present this issue (kernel problem maybe?)

Mine looks the same. I would say it's normal and no point in banging your head about it because it is only visible in very dark scenario on only black screen. Who uses there phone to look at black color in dark room? Nobody normal.
It's the way AMOLED screens work.
I must say, compared to how the screen of my I9100 looked after a few months use the I9300 seems a bit better with this kind of problem.
The screen of the I9100 looked like someone had poured black ink all over the screen, even on darker backgrounds, not just black.
A few dots here and there on the I9300 doesn't bother me.
The only time I see them are when I'm looking att NSFW content in bed at night and the wife rolls over att looks att the screen and i have too quickly change app
My old GT-I9100 which my wife uses bow has the same issue and so does my current phone.
I believe thos is normal, since all phones I've seen with amoled screen have the same issue.
And in my case it doesn't bother me, since I don't watch movies with lots of dark scenes in night.
Sent from my GT-I9300
Yes it's common and it's one of the several downsides of the Amoled screen. This phone would be close to perfect if it had the screen from the one x.

Have the same on my phone.
Yes i have the same problem on my s3.
but here's what i don't get, why is the screen not black all over. shouldn't all the pixels be turned off when displaying a black screen?
And it's certainly not an amoled issue, because my sgs1 does not have this problem. at least it is not visible because when the sgs1 displays a black screen the screen is much more black then the s3 or the s2 I had before.
Is the new amoled screens just cheaper produced?
just shot a photo (of bad quality) to prove my point:
(Both the s1 and the s3 displays the same black picture with screen brightness = 100% And the s1 is actually so dark that it is hard to see it.
wierd
i have the same problem too.. but does not have any problem with it..

S9 screen with red or pink tint?

Does anyone else see reddish or pink on their screen? I see it when I tilt the screen. I noticed it a few days ago on my S9+ and now can't unsee it. Straight on it looks OK but at an angle the screen looks pink, like when scrolling through GMail or web page when my phone is on a table at an angle to me. Not sure if I should exchange and risk getting other issues. Otherwise my device has been fine. I went to the AT&T store near me to compare their display models and mine shows some pink compared to the store.

Mine show slight blue tint when tilted
The left one has a slight green tint. No AMOLED is going to be 100% perfect. Actually I think you have one of the better panels. It looks brighter and the white looks thicker compared to the display model.
Based on the number of screwy AMOLED panels I've seen, that one would probably be OK to me. My panel is yellower along the top quarter and I also consider that a keeper you can do so much worse in my opinion. In ten years they may finally nail the technology till then it's lottery.

Mine also turns a little pink if angled... i can't remember if my previous S8 also did so...
Mine turns ever so slightly blue when tilted. It's MUCH better then my Note 8 was, which turned pink at even the slightest angle.
Try factory reset, when I got mine and turned it on I saw from the boot animation that the display was white. When it finished booting it looked like it was stuck with the blue filter on. I factory reset and the display has been normal since
This can be adjusted, at least this is what I did on my S8. Go to settings, Display, Screen mode and fine tune it there.
So my wife and I each have a US T-Mobile model. Her's definitely has the pink screen issue. Duplicating the settings between the phones and the issue persists. I will be contacting T-Mobile for an exchange.
FYI - wound up not being a hardware issue for our phones. I found out that the native Android Night Light setting transfers between phones. Was able to delete, and use Samsung blue light filter settings, using Nova and the instructions here.
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS9/comments/85blz5/psa_night_light_and_blue_light_filter_overlap/
anyone else experiencing this on their s9+? when i tilt my device, right before the blue shift, i can se a pink/reddish hue go across the display. do you have the same thing? should i be worried? it's kind of annoying, every slight tilt and i can notice it.
I think now that I checked it seems like mine also has a very slight pink touch on it... But i dont really care and I haven't really ever noticed it.
I use black everywhere possible. Dark theme, dark wallpaper, KIWI browser with AMOLED dark turned on, so this way I save my battery, i save my screen, and black is way better on the eye
