I recently bought the MHL adaptor for my Galaxy SII so I can use the phone as a handy media player when I'm not at my own house. Anyway I've started ripping some of my Blu-Ray movies, but then I started to wonder, how will I store the file on the phone? The first movie I ripped was over 15GB, but my memory card is FAT32 and won't take files over 4GB, as far as I know the phone itself won't read NTFS (?).
So does anyone know how I can get the file onto my 32GB MicroSD card and allow the phone to read it?
NTFS = Windows
ext4 = Linux
Android ~ Linux
Applry the files or use an ext4 file-system. I'm sure I read about that it's possible on Android.
However, no USB support under windows anymore then.

I coverted my Blu-Ray's with Daniusoft Video Converter, and saved the file as Galaxay S2. I then used Kies (Video Library) to transfer them to my phone. Only problem is that I could only put 1 on the SD card, and the other 2 on the internal.
The phone will convert them when you do this! But stunning movie pic's

Siyah or any kernel for GS2 doesn't read ntfs formatted external sd as of now. Only ntfs thumb drives can be read.

Thanks for the info, however I want the video to be true 1080p blu-ray quality, so I don't want to convert to a smaller file/lower quality format.
same; problem I am faceing ....and read in galaxy note section that it is possible to format SD card in ntfs and make it to work ..our sgs 2 devs has to consider this problem and work on it....

I am trying to transfer a few BD MKV files to my MicroSD card but forgot it will only take a 4GB file and the 2 I have are 7 and 6GB. Is there a different file system format I can format the card to to accept the files and still be recognizable by the phone? Will NTFS work for it? Thanks for any help.

amdroid does not have drivers for NTFS as far as i know. just use handbrake and chop those files down.
The stock kernel for vibrant supported ext3, I expect yours does as well, but you might need a boot script to mount it. And windows wouldn't be able to mount it anymore without adding a driver.
I would suggest looking into cifs manager. I posted something about it around here somewhere. You can mount samba shares and watch just about any video no matter the size. I tested it with a Bray rip of Avatar.
I'm still trying to figure out how to access it over the internet. The program will be my iPhone Airvideo replacement once I figure that out. If we had Froyo I would suggest Androstream Pro to you as well.
If I try to copy a file of over 4 GB in size (say, a video in .mkv format), Windows gives me the following error : "The file "Movie.mkv" is too large for the destination file system." I tried with files of 4.36 GB, 6.54 GB... same error.
I can copy files of 2.99 GB and 3.41 GB with no issues (I just tried), so I'd say it's not working for files of over 4 GB only.
I get the same error, regardless of the storage I am trying to copy on (the internal one, or the external SD card - SanDisk 16GB, class 4, fwiw).
Also tried to do it via Recovery USB mount (TWRP / RomRacer's CWM), cause I figured that maybe it's a bug with the ROM (Neutrino, AOKP Milestone and MIUIv4)... But no... Apparently, it's not Recovery/ROM-related :|
Or maybe it is, but it is very widespread, lol.
Could it be that the FAT32 file system just can't handle >4 GB files?!
If you're using FAT32, yes, 4GB is the limitation of its design and architecture. I suggest, if you can, format it as NTFS

So... There's no possible way to copy a >4 GB file? That means no HD movies :/
NTFS... right... That's not gonna work, right? The phone can only detect FAT/FAT32... as far as I know.
It's impossible to copy a file higher than 4GB to a FAT32 Partition, there is no way. You can use EXT4, it allows you to copy a 16TB file

NTFS won't be recognized by your phone. EXT4 won't be recognized by windows. EXT2 and EXT3 can be readed by windows via external drivers, but i'm not sure if your phone will recognize it. I guess it's better you forget watch that HD movie on your phone

You can always use any video editor and cut your movie on two parts/files < 4GB, just saying
Will the phone recognize exfat? Its a lot slower but it allows larger files.

Your phone will definitely support EXT2 and EXT3.
FYI, there is experimental EXT4 support on Windows via ext2fsd, but by default it's read only.

Just out of curiosity... If we manage to get a >4GB .mkv file to the EXT4 partition, how would we read that .mkv file off the EXT4 partition?
I remember back when I had the HTC Desire (needed to have a 1-2 GB EXT3/4 partition on the SD-card to act as an internal memory extension), the EXT partition was not accessible using any file manager... that was happening in November of 2011, though

I purchased a Komputerbay 64gb SDXC Class 6 card from Amazon, planning to use it in my S2. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work. I wanted to get the Sandisk, but they were sold out...
When plugged in, I get an error about an empty card, and offer to format it - this seems to be stuck, does not finish even after an hour.
The card seems to work fine in my Macbook, and in a Huawei Mediapad running ICS.
Any ideas ? Returning the card is not easy - I got it on a trip to US, and I am now back in Czech republic.....

in order for it to work in an S2 the card needs to be formatted to Fat32 - it doesn't support exFat (default format of sdxc cards)

Try connecting your phone to your comp and format it to Fat32 from there

When connected in USB debug mode, only the build-in memory shows up on my Mac. The uninitialized USB card does not show up in Disk Utility ( the OS X program for formatting ).

Take card out of phone, put in computer, format FAT32.
Plug it into your MacBook, open up disk utility, format the disk as FAT32. Backup the stuff on it before you do it though!

Thanks for the suggestion - this was one of the first things I tried...no go.....
The card formatted this way works fine in an Huawei MediaPad ICS tablet....I am beginning to think there is some hardware incompatibility between the card and the S2. There are user reporting success with this card and S2 on Amazon.

Are you running a custom Rom in your S2? I had similar problems, for some reason the format tool doesn't seem to work right. I used this tool - EaseUS Partition Manager to first remove the exFAT partition, then create a new Fat32 partition with the total space used (remember to select 'apply' between steps) then I put it in the phone and it all worked. If it still does not work after that I'd sort out an RMA.
Gsm arena says s2 suports sd cards up to 32 gb maybe this is a problem...

I'm running a 64GB card in my SGS2, it does support them but they must be formatted to Fat32 (which windows doesn't support doing so a 3rd party app is needed)
Try Gparted.Google to find download and tutorial
sometimes windows doesn't format correctly
Windows can't format an sd card larger than 32gb with fat32, only ntfs or exfat I think
I should say I also used Easeus Position Manager to actually format the card. I also put the card in a card reader, it wasn't in my GS2 when I first formatted it to Fat32 from exFat.
This isn't necessary, it's just how I did it.

It does support cards larger than 32GB as long as they're formatted correctly.

Note: despite the thread being about the SIII, it did the trick for my SII (ROM: CyanogenMod nightly august 26th; kernel: Siyah v4.1.1).
I have had a 64gig card in my phone from Sandisk.
suddenly after 7 months it started to do funny things, not saving pics/movies etc.

On my computer have the same problem with the card, i can write stuff on it, can read stuff and delete,
When i turn the card out of the computer and then insert it again.
Nothing has changed, nothing extra on the card and the pieces ive deleted are back again and still working.
Got a really expensive 64gig writeable here :S
Can not format it also , even with some tools like posted before, it gives an error.
So boys and girls, it does not always work fine.
And Sandisk says, o no, your phone doesnt support it so no service.
Screw them i say, i never buy sandisk anymore :laugh:

I would like to copy some files (videos) wich are over 4GB+ to the sdcard on my phone, so i can watch'em using the microhdmi output.
Well, it seems that android is recognizing only fat32 partitions, that have a size limitation.
If i try to format it to NTFS or EXT4 (using SafeStrap Partition command) i can't read it on the system.
Is there any piece of software i can use, or any trick to make the sdcard able to recive 4gb+ files ?

Since I cant move any apps to the ext SD card yet..Im lost...never the less, I still bought a 64 gig class 10 card and put it in the phone. It won't read it. Just says Mount SD card. I try to do it and says the card is safe to remove.
How do I get this to work?

The problem is in format of SDcard. Actually, Faux Kernel won't read exFat format, which is mostly used to format 64Gb storages. There two ways to fix it:
1. Flash Ktoonez kernel (KT-kernel) that supports exFat (just like stock kernel).
2. Find the way to format your SDcard into Fat32 format. There is utility named Fat32Format can be found on the Internet. Or, if you are on Mac - just select Fat format.

caution, formatting 64gb cards in fat32 can cause data corruption over time. i recomend this mod. works on aosp and tw roms that have init.d support. i use it and works great for exfat support http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155363
