New update v.1.4.2 available. - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I just noticed that a new update to version 1.4.2 started rolling out Monday, February 20, 2012. All those with a rooted 1.4.1 NT that weren't blocking updates because "there isn't an update available now anyway" may want to look into it now.
I haven't heard any details concerning what this update fixes or adds but, if recent history is any indication, it very well may break your rooting and/or side-loading apps and who knows how long it may take our resident geniuses on here to come up with a work-around.
Be forewarned everyone.
- Byron

It would be great to hear from somebody, if new Nook Tablets (16GB) are coming already with this version and if they can be rooted and reinstalled to CM7

Anyone wanting to can download it here.
The page notes "The NOOK Tablet Ver1.4.2 update provides minor system enhancements."
Edit: Also, BN_AlexG (admin at the B&N forums) said he will post the changes soon (post made 5 hours ago). Dean_Gibson also posted the changed files in the thread I linked.

Easy rooting
There should be no concerns about rooting. I was unable to upgrade from 1.4.1 rooted (w/Market, etc) to 1.4.2 (the B&N update detects an error and does not continue), but reverting to 1.4.0 stock (erase+deregister+reregister) and then applying my rooting procedure from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413734 to root and update directly to 1.4.2 and reroot, worked. Since that is more sensitive to B&N changes than most rooting methods, other rooting methods should work as well.

I dont think the root block on the new 8gb nook tablets running 1.4.2 is what actually blocks rooting. I think the new wave of tablets have some changes beyond the rom that actually controls the boot sequence and prevents rooting from SD card. Not sure though... My newest video shows that no current root methods work on the 1.4.2 8 gb nook tablets and I dont think it will be long until they apply the same changes to the next wave of manufactured 16gb tablets.

Yes, it got me just a minute ago. Disabled Android Marketplace
Yes, 1.4.2 breaks things. Android Marketplace is now disabled on my Nook Tablet With SD card boot.
It pops up:
You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?
But clicking either button returns to the home screen
Other features seem to be working.

I'm going to assume you didn't have updates blocked via indirect's method or some other method, yes?
Or did you intentionally update to see if the updates would break stuff?

Slapped with 1.4.2 OTA, what are my options?

I rooted my NT two days ago using Albert's SD card method (thanks!), and thought I had for sure used NT Hidden Settings to block OTA. This morning I saw that the update had been applied, and a few things on my NT are now broken.
Now I cannot access the market. I get the same error as sherwingws.
Other gapps are broken now too including Talk, Currents, and gmail.
Can I just repeat the SD root process? Or do I need to make other changes before I attempt that. What are my options at this point?
Thanks everyone!

Also wanting to confirm that 1.4.2 breaks root. Rooted my NT two weeks ago using Indirect's sd card method and could have sworn that I blocked OTA updates, but about an hour ago got the update anyway and any programs requiring root won't run. This includes Android Marketplace. ::sadface::
Gapps broken also at first, BUT...using getjar app, I re-downloaded gmail and it had no problem installing and running. So maybe all is not lost?
Edit: Sorry, I lied about gapps. Ignore that, pls.

1.42
I am also having the same problem, no market place which also makes me sad. Anyone know what I should do?

Nice, that's would be great to here this update~

[Q] Nook 1.4.1 update automatically applied, best option?

My nook updated to 1.4.1 last night, breaking my market access. I'm pretty disappointed, but I was wondering what the best step would be to take next... I'm considering either a 1.4.0 reset and just reroot + block OTA (which I neglected to do obviously) or install the new snowball mod that's popping up. Some people seem to like snowball mod, but others are complaining that it's making apps force close (which already seems to be a problem with the root in general).
I have apps and books on it already, but I'm sure I could just regrab them. I've only had the nook since christmas, and I've been on vacation most of the time. Just installed a **** ton of games and grabbed some books (nothing off BN store).
Also, would the snowball mod (which supposedly removes all B&N functionality) make the reader aspect lack at all? Does the nook app on the android marketplace work the same as the nook's default reader?
tldr: reroot or install snowball mod after nook updated to 1.4.1?
Mine did the same thing some time in the last day. I just want to get it back to 1.4.0.
I have the same problem. I rooted my tablet a couple weeks ago. The root thread said that it would stop OTA updates, and I believed it. Unfortunately, whatever they said was blocking OTA didn't work and now I have 1.41.

i got to to go back just fine after using the "magic sd" method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190
well here's what happened...
i got it back to 1.4.0 using the magic sd method, but it was still using the old honeycomb launcher from my previous root. i formatted and deregistered, then applied snowball mod. i don't like it at all... the widgets don't seem fully functional right now, and some apps don't even run when you start them up, SPECIFICALLY THE B&N APP FOR ANDROID. if you want any ereader functionality, stay away from snowball.
if anyone knows an e-reader app similar to the nook app, please post. i'm going to stick with snowball now just for functionality and testing, but i would really appreciate some kind of answer.

This worked for me, but the N button didn't work afterward so I was forced to hard reset and then everything worked fine.
I restored mine to 1.4.0 by the Nook Tablet restore file and then went to root my NK again.
Everything is fine but I can not get NookandZergy to copy files. I get failures on copying files and also denials to chmod commands. I'm still feeling that there has to be a law against B&N changing MY DEVICE! OTAO took me out.

Few questions...Nook tablet 1.4.1 forced on a rooted 1.4.0 tablet

So i rooted my wife's tablet when 1.4.0 was on it. everything was working great....until 1.4.1 was pushed. The android market app, android email app and android clock app no longer open. Ive been searching for a solution and i think i may have found one without having to revert back to 1.4.0 and start all over again. If i understand this correctly, all i need to do is this:
Sideload the ADB root hijack.apk file
Follow the Indirect's ADB Root Hijack APP, Allows Root PATCH and Reentry of Root Script video
And i think thats it. Am i missing a step? Also, for what its worth, When i try running the new NThidden app and try to run the unknown sources script, i get a force close everytime. Does this mean that something isnt right with my root? Sorry if im not making some sense...pretty new to this rooting stuff. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, as someone who half knows what I am talking about, I think your best bet is to back everything up, factory reset, and then use the latest and greatest auto root program. This will have the addecd benifit of you never have to worry about it auto updating again!
Everything I have read says 1.4.1 was put in place by people who hate you and want you to be poor. =p

It's not that they want you to be poor; they just want the money that you have to be theirs. They wouldn't begrudge you new money -- as long as you spend it on their services.
This is just me but I would factory reset and follow indirects method with alberts youtube vids..I know people have 1.4.1 going but Im sticking with 1.4.0 until I really need to update. Then watch alberts vids on how to block Over The Air updates and then you wont have to worry bout her tablet getting a forced update.
I'm having the same problem as GMcD.
AFAIK, I used the latest root script that should have blocked the OTA updates. Before I restore to factory and try rooting again, can anyone suggest how I can make sure that the OTAs are disabled again?
Is there any way to verify that the OTA updates have been disabled?
Thanks in advance!
PS much thanks to Indirect and Albert! Great work guys!
go to your settings then device info--> about your NOOK--> Software version should be 9.9.9 if not then it's not blocking OTA's
Frustrated...
Okay, I must be missing something and have hit the point of total frustration I have, I think, a fair amount of experience with rooting (DroidX, GalaxyS, GX2, Axtrix2 and NookColor with NF and HL+ running before they were allowed) so can only guess it's something silly or simple I am overlooking...
I bought my (3) kids NTs for Christmas since I own a fully rooted NC and saw the potential of the device for the price AFTER it was rooted. After they opened and registered them, I jumped online, D/L'd Indirect's scripts (YOU ROCK DUDE!) and had them rooted and on their way in an hour. 5 days later, the stupid 1.4.1 update hits (I was one of those who thought the root alone blocked the OTA) and jacked up all 3 devices.
I have tried EVERY post, hint and tip I can find here to get 1.4.0 back on these devices without success. Things I done:
- Factory reset MULTIPLE times (turning on wifi ONLY long enough to get past the registration screen)
- Downloaded the acclaim_update.zip file multiple times from multiple sites (latest one yesterday afternoon from Indirect's post). I have left it zipped, not changed the name and put it on the root partition of the card.
- Tried 3 different SD cards (all 2GB and have been used for rooting all my other devices without any issues), formatted from the PC and formatted from the NT
No matter what I seem to do, I can't get back to base 1.4.0. FR reverts back to stock 1.4.1 after reset and when I try to boot to the SD cards, the screen flashes a second like it's going to then just errors out saying try again or contact support. I "think" I have followed every post or trick to the letter, but can't get anywhere...
Anyone else seeing this problem or do I just have three jacked up tablets? Am I missing something?
I had just gotten mine rooted (using Indirect method), when I got hit with the update. Luckily I had a titanium backup. Here's what I did:
Restored 1.40 with sd card (did not even move my data, just copied the card to computer just in case it got wiped)
Rooted using updated Indirect method (smoother and easier than 1st time and set version to 9.9.9.
Then restored apps & data from backup (still on sd card)
Only trouble I had was with the drivers (I had to load a program to delete the drivers-don't recall the name but it's in Indirect's troubleshooting drivers thread)
Whole process was a pain but still only took a couple of hours.
Mike
I forgot one step in between the restoring and the rooting:
When I restored to 1.40 my n button wouldn't work so I had to erase and deregister the device (in settings under device info)
Then when I was able to connect I had to register again (no big deal)
Good luck,
Mike

I am having the same issue. I have tried to dl, re-dl everything possible to get mine to go to a 1.4.0. i just received mine as a gift and tbh i dislike how you have to purchase every little thing on it. SOOOOOOO what can I do to get it to a 1.4.0. I can follow instuctions and just need to warm up on this new technology hehe.. Oh another thing, as im going by albert wertz video, i cant help but to notice that his NT starts at 9.9.9? If I can get mine to go to a 9.9.9 and then restarting from there, I can do that as well. PLZ HELP
my question is, TiBu needs root. Now mine becomes 1.4.1 and TiBu is not working. How can I back up my stuff before reverting it back to 1.4.0?
Unfortunately, you can't. I bit the bullet today and did the 1.4.0 restore, re-root and OTA block. I've had to re-download all my apps and lost any saved game data but it is worth it to me.
I had restored my son's NT and realized how much nicer it is to have a rooted device that didn't require adb commands for installing apps. The entire process took me about 45 minutes with about a third of the time waiting for large app downloads (Madden 12).

[Q] OTA 1.4.2

Hello,
I have a rooted NT on 1.4.1 and this morning it seems the the OTA block did not function because it upgraded to 1.4.2 on it own.
It doens't seem to have affected the root so far, but I haven't explored everthing.
When I click on the NT Hidden settings OTA block i have a message stating :
Missing /system/bin/su
What can I do to block any further ota upgrades. When I rooted I am preety sure that I had made sure that OTA were blocked...
Thanks.
Nathalie
same here
I also looked at my rooted tablet today and it said the 1.4.2 OTA installed.
I had rooted from 1.4.1 using the SD card method.
I had run the OTA blocker but still got 1.4.2
It did not appear to break the root but I had limited time to check things.
Hoping to hear others comments on this issue.
And looking for a OTA block that works.
I tried titanium back-up block at one time but had issues, might just try it again.
This is bummer news. I was hoping I was done with the B&N BS.
install cm7 if you can. It works nice and unlocks the mic

I'm sticking with a rooted 1.4.0 for now. The issue is that I've read the B&N stock apps don't work on CM7. You could download the B&N app from the Market but it doens't have the same functionallity. Some who subscribe to magazines have reported they can't view their subscriptions on the B&N Market app. It seems to be an issue that depends on the magazine as some are OK and some aren't.

None of my magazines are accessible through any B&N Market app (Time, SI, GQ, etc.), but I thought rooting still allows you to access all the vanilla B&N content in addition to Market apps?
EDIT: Whoops, missed the part about CM7. Yes, a different ROM doesn't access the B&N stock apps, as I understand it.
So what should i do because, it seems that i have lost android market, it is asking for a new account. And the email and talk do not work either...
I am kinda lost here because i do not want to brick my NT...
Any suggestions?

The OTA has removed your root access. Which in turn means you can no longer use the packages installed after the root process. Basically refer back to GabrialDestruir's post where he said the 'root card' methods should still work fine. Your best bet IMO is to either install internally, or use an sdcard version of CWM recovery and if you want stock, download and install one of the stock flashable roms in the development section. Else install CM7. Or stay on 1.4.2, your call.

I'm running 1.4.2 and it's all nicely rooted, you just have to used a "Root Card" aka a card which by whatever means adds all sorts of root glory to your device. There are like two or three of these that actually exist for the Nook Tablet, choose one burn the sdcard and follow the instructions and you get a functioning stock root device.

So GabrialDestruir, I initially used Albert Wertz root method using an sd card.
Should I re-root my NT using the same method as it is right now or should I un-root it prior rooting it again.
It's not that clear for me yet how I should proceed.
Thanks.

[Q] Rooted Nook Tablet not working month after root

Hello, I'm fairly new here, but I was unable to find a thread with a problem like mine so here goes. I rooted my Nook Tablet with the method below:
Google: "Albert Wertz Root Nook Tablet SD" 41mins long
It was an SD card root by Albert Wertz. It has been working flawlessly for the past few weeks(I removed all B&N content), but one day the android market lost connectivity and so did some of my apps(Pandora and Facebook). No matter what I did it always would say that there was no connectivity and would offer a retry button that didn't work. The browser and some other apps that use the internet still work.
It may have to do with data connectivity confusion within the tablet?
Also, the date on the Tablet reads January 4th, 2000 instead of February 27th 2012. The time reads 7:21am instead of 4:00pm.
Are you still rooted?
Yes, the device is still rooted, but some of the apps/features are not working
I would try to unroot and re-root to see if it fixes the problem. What does the software version number say?
It says Version 1.3.6 System CM 1.1 Changelog
The software version on the nook is 9.9.9
Have you tried a simple reboot of the device? Sometimes that's the best cure when things go wonky.
Yes, I have, I may try unrooting and rooting again this weekend, I'm not entirely sure how to do so though.

[Q] Rooted Nook recently unable to download apps

Hi, y'all. So I rooted my Nook Tablet awhile ago...I bought it in November 2011, I think, and I rooted it shortly thereafter using Indirect's method. It has been working great until the last 3 days. I am able to download books, but when I try and download apps (even from the B&N appstore), they always fail. I have gotten the following two messages. I tried googling solutions, but I only came across others with the same problem suggesting that you update to 1.4.3, which I will obviously not be doing since I will lose the functionality. Here are the errors:
Sorry! The application DeviceManagerService (process com.bn.devicemanager) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Then there's a button to force close.
The second is: Sorry! The application DownloadAdmin (process com.bn.nook.dadmin) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. There's a button after that to force close.
Also, when the downloads fail it says it is because I may not have enough space for them, but there are like 10 gb left, so not sure what the problem is.
Anyone else experiencing this? I tried reinstalling the .apk files from Titanium Backup but it didn't help. Thanks!

FWIW I've run into this "not enough space" type of error when I downloaded those apps that expect to store their data on the external SDcard while I didn't have a card in the SDcard slot.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a 32 gb SD card inserted, so that can't be the problem, either. That's why this is so frustrating!
Great. Now when I just restarted it, it is showing that it is back to software version 1.4.0 from 9.9.9. All I did was reinstall the devicemanager and download admin files; would this have somehow unrooted it?
Well, if root has been broken, can't you just root it again?
And if root is broken, you can also update to 1.4.3 before re-rooting, should you want to.

Yes, I can re-root it, it's just a time consuming process with my ancient PC.
If I update it to 1.4.3, won't that block the ability to root it?
Nope, 1.4.3 roots fine with both Brian's and Albert's sd-card methods. (And probably any others as well, but those are the ones I have tried.)
Surely it can't be that time consuming, regardless of the age of your PC? Albert's card is under 100MB to download and then burn to SD. (Brian's is bigger.)

Are there any benefits to updating it to 1.4.3 if I plan to root again?
If you are running stock there were some bug fixes in the updated firmwares. Personally I would not run stock below 1.4.2.
If you plan to run for example CM10 the firmware doesn't matter.
Sent from my BNTV600 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks! Good to know about the firmware not mattering. Sounds like updating the software and then redoing the root is the way to go, even though it took forever last time.
How can I revert to 1.4.0 and start factory fresh with my NT?
Ok, please bear with me. I'm a noob, so don't know all the technical lingo for this stuff, so I hope what I'm saying will make sense. I was able to update to 1.4.3, but that took away the ability to use the Nook Color App Manager, which I love, because it kept all the apps on the Nook's stock screen, instead of having to switch to a different screen. I would like to try and remove 1.4.3 and go back to 1.4.0 (I also liked the ability to still have access to the in-store experience, and I haven't been to a B&N to see if that is still available with this root version). I tried using the process from Adam Outler to revert to 1.4.0, but it didn't work, and is still showing it is version 1.4.3, so not sure what I'm doing wrong. Is there a way to just remove 1.4.3? Somehow, when I ran the process to revert to 1.4.0, it reset my device like it should have, but it still seems to be rooted without the root ability (all the apps I have downloaded from Google Play are showing they are installed, but I can't access them from my NT and can't reinstall them). I'm guessing I need to re-root (I have down it twice, but then undone it trying to get back to 1.4.0). So...long story short, I think I'd just like to run whatever needs to be run to take my NT back to factory settings when it was first released in 2011 with 1.4.0. I have been searching for that, but just seem to find the same things I have tried. Can anyone please help with this? Thanks!

You will loose everything you will to root again if you run it.

For some reason, it took it back to 1.4.2 rather than 1.4.0, but I'm guessing that 1.4.0 may no longer be available? At any rate, I got it re-rooted and it was still having the problems, so I just went ahead and re-updated to 1.4.3 and re-rooted, so thanks for your help!
Well, 1.4.2 is better than 1.4.0 anyway, so no problem there I guess!

Did going to 1.4.3 and rerooting solve your problem? My Mother's NT is running a rooted 1.4.2 which I did ages ago, but recently on boot the BN downloader (or something to that effect) crashes and she can't download any BN apps because of it. She's also getting the out of space error you described.
I'm trying to convince her to switch to CM10.1 (which I did to my tablet not so long ago), but she refuses to do so until I can prove to her it's stable (personally I think the official RC is way more stable than the hodge podge that is the Nook OS any day, but she doesn't believe me since she's heard me complaining of the battery draining recently.) Either way I'd love to get her up and going again so she can go back to using it.

Yes! It sounds like she was getting the same errors I was getting, and it fixed the problem when I took it to 1.4.3. I just miss the nook color app manager that would allow stuff from the non-B&N market to appear on my home screen, but I've gotten used to the two home screens now, and it seems to work faster than before. One thing I will mention is that the above method asawi mentioned with the repart image frees up additional space on the nook. I think it must have re-partitioned it as part of installation (hence the name). Whereas before I had 11 gb for B&N storage and only 1 for "other" storage, after I did that update, it changed it so it was about 8 gb for B&N and 5 gb for "other." I liked that, as I don't have all that much stuff from B&N on my nook, but have more than 1 gb of other stuff, but your Mom may want to know how it affects her B&N storage.

If you're looking for a stable version of CM10, Succulent's CM10.0 dated 12/31 http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/cm10-0-jelly-bean-for-nook-tablet-uploading/ is very stable and its battery-consumption is not noticeably different than that of stock ROM.
