I have a question that might relate more to Android than to the Note. I've been using an iPhone since the 3gs and got my Note on Sunday.
On an iPhone, I can exit the browser, do something else, then come back to the browser and continue where I left off. The state of the browser is saved.
With Android, the browser goes back to the home page. I tried Opera and it seems to bring me back to the page where I last left off, but it has to reload it. It's better than nothing but I'd really like to save the browser state in memory.
Can I get the same type of thing in Android? I looked through the settings and didn't see anything?
Thanks
As long as you don't use the back button, it should stay on the page you were viewing. Hasn't happened to me yet.
Hmm.
I just opened up the Android Browser, went to slickdeals.net, hit the home button, went back into the browser (slickdeals was still there), opened up the weather widget, hit home button, opened go SMS, hit home button and went back into the browser and it took me to the home page again.
What am I doing wrong?
Hmm mine does the same thing. I'm using Opera. It seems like if it's closed for any length of time then it dumps the page from memory and requires a reload when you come back to it. My guess this is working a working as intended feature of the operating system.
I tried the exact same thing. Opened Engadget, hit home button, hit weather widget, hit home button, opened the messaging app, hit home button, hit Opera and it had to reload the page. I remember my iPhone saving browser state for days and I guess I never noticed it when I switched to Android about 8 months ago. Just tested my old Inspire on wifi, it does the same thing and it's running ICS. It's gotta be the operating system.
I notice the same thing with my Note. my moto Atrix didnt do this so i dont think it has to do with android in general.
its android..doesnt have anything to do with the Note.

I know what you're talking about. This happened to me several times on my Note. The first few, I kind of blew it off, then it got annoying. When I actively tried to duplicate the issue, it came right back to the same page I was on, rather than the home page. This makes me think that either I closed all apps from the task manager and forgot or that Android actively killed the browser after a time. I definitely never had this happen on my Skyrocket or Vivid.
I just tried to reproduce this - opened Opera, loaded a page, went back to Home, opened a half-dozen apps, went back to Opera, and my page was still there.
Opera keeps the page but has to reload it. The default browser just loads the home page.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Dolphin Browser HD seems to save my pages for days. If I forget to close out my pages it is always on where I left it.
It probably has to do with how the browser is treated by the automatic task manager built into android. My guess is that the stock browser and Opera get closed after a while of non-use, whereas Dolphin probably has some sort of higher priority and stays where you left it.

I'll try Dolphin HD and post my results later today.
Thanks for the suggestion.

To be clearer - Opera did NOT reload the page after opening the various other apps in my test. It wasn't until much later when I re-entered Opera did I see it reload the page. Maybe an hour after I ran my test.

This is samsung's browser most likely as I didnt have this happen when using cm7 on my htc inspire, but if you go do something else and want to return to the browser's last page you were on what I find is working for me is holding the home button and when all the open apps show up just select the browser and it should return you to the last page you were on. Since it only shows 6 apps, if you've opened more than six apps since you left the browser then it wont be on the list and would need to start a new session. This is so far how I've been able to return to my browser's last page I was reading.
This is not a Samsung or a typical Android issue. I have had the Skyrocket, Atrix, Atrix 2, Thrill, Inspire, Captivate, and a some others. Never had this issue. Only with the Note.

Quick question... something that has started to drive me crazy about my Hero, although related to the whole OS....:
1) Is there REALLY no Exit Option for the Browser???
2) Is therer really no "Home" Option for the Browser???
Both seems kinda basic don't they?
//Nik
No and no.
There are very few apps that have an exit or quit option on Android. The OS manages memory and processes for you so you in theory don't need to worry about it.
There are task managers available of course, but IMHO, not needed.
The Home page can be set, but there is no way to go to it... a bug I think
Yeah, I know about the lacking Exit button in the system, but most apps you can press "Back" to "close" the program, some prgrams close, some minimize, that's fine and it's a routine I've gotten used to, but with the Browser, the "Back" button will take me back one page and I would have to do that through the history since I started the browser, all the way back to my start page where it will finally close the browser...
I know that we can use a Task Manager, I use Advanced Task Manager myself and am happy with it but there really needs to be a one-click solution implemented....
Just my opinion...

just pres HOME key to "exit" an application
Just hit the Home button then to get out of the browser
Mind you, if you've hit a link in an email or Peep etc and launched the browser, that will lead you to have to press and hold Home to go back to the previous app.
Still, easy enough, but I agree, a bit of a pain to have to remember.

Pressing back if you've clicked through to other pages in the browser will take you back through the pages until the last one, then it will go back to the last app you were in or Home if you were there.
well, this is the function of a "back" button
Exactly... just that sometimes 'Back' is further away than you thought
Thanks for all you guys' answers, you guys are great... good reading...
I know about the little tricks and ways to get "back" to home and navigate through the phones interface... I've been pushing the phone quite a bit since I'm testing it through work where we might add it to our current line of Windows Mobile phones as an option for those who don't like em, and also to do our best NOT to get the very popular iPhone as an option...
Anyway, during the last two weeks, I have been pushing it quite hard, and I have a personal agenda in there as well since I'm thinking of movin over to Android after a very long Smartphone/Pocket PC/Windows Mobile era... and this issue was one I needed to confirm that it is what I've seen, cause to me it is a little bit of a disadvantage to the whole system, there is too many steps to close programs, and I don't want all these applications in the backgroud eating up the RAM...
Browsing around on the web, which I do quite often on my phone gets quite cumbersome as I use my bookmarks as my Home Page, and to get to it, is quite a few tasks, when a Home-button would do the trick.
I don't think these two issues should be something that you "live" with or learn to adapt to cause I do think they are basic enough to implement.
Let's hope Operas browser has everything the built in has and more... and that a "close-button" gets implementet in the system or perhaps a third-party app...
Thanks again y'all!

if you really visit these websites so often, you can use the stock standard bookmarks widget. Click on the bookmark from one of your home screens and you open straight to the webpage.
I never ever open the browser by itself anymore. Always straight to a bookmark.
Another way might be to create a shortcut to the bookmark. Not sure if this can be done... but I might try it and find out.
I just bought a new gtablet thats running the stock 3588 software. All seems to be fine except when I surf the web. While doing so, most of the time the gtablet will switch back to the home screen resulting with me having to go back to the web again, it does the same thing using a different browser also.
I really don't want to try one of the different mods yet, but if that is what it takes, I might have to.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem.
Sounds like there could be some sort of app interaction/interference going on. You may have something running in the background that is doing it. Its a place to start. Have you installed flash?
May sound silly, but are you inadvertantly hitting the "Home" button while swiping?

Glad you said it, lol! Actually that was my first thought but didn't want so sound rude I remember getting used to the sensitivity of the buttons when I got my tab. That was the reason I ended up using button remapper and button saver. The button remapper let me map the soft buttons to be up, down, left, right. It helps a lot when surfing the net, I no longer have to zoom in to select a link. Button saver makes a small on-screen tab that when pressed brings up search, home, menu and back buttons on the screen. It works awesome and I have not accidentally hit the home button in the middle of doing anything since setting this up. This is also a great setup for night use.

This was happening to me too. I got my gtablet 2 weeks ago and got the update (it was unusable until the update) and it seemed a lot more stable. However, when I surfed the web after a while it dropped back to the home page. Ended up flashing to TNT 5 and its been totally stable ever since (I was nervous about doing it as I'm a noob at all this but it was painless if you follow instructions).
I was wondering if it had something to do with the content of the page (flash or something) but decided to just go with the much better ROM. Not looked back since.
It continues to do it even if I have it laying flat on a table and making sure that I don't hit any of the side buttons.
Yes, I do have "Flash" installed.
Probably the Flash 10.1 causing this... Get 10.2. If you don't have access to the android market you can also get it from freewarelovers

Hi,
Is this using the default browser? That (crashing to homescreen) was a fairly common problem, but I assumed that it might have been fixed by now. Anyway, if you are using the default browser, I suggest you try Xscope or Dolphin. I've been using the former since last Dec, and rarely see that crashing. You should be able to get them on market, or the Xscope dev has a download on his website. Been using both with Flash.
mine has been doing that with the 10.1 flash. Since I cant access android market, I cant download 10.2 straight to the tablet. The market keeps saying I dont have an android device linked to the account
using freewarelovers to DL 10.2. will see if this fixes it
works
If you can use other browsers on the stock firmware I highly suggest Opera Mobile. It has hardware acceleration so it scrolls and zooms smoother than the others, too. I'ts my favorite so far. Makes the web experience on the tab a lot better.
Well, I uninstalled Flash 10.1 and I think that it has fixed my browser problems. Thanks for all your help.

Awesome! If you still want flash just hop over to freewarelovers [dot] com, and flash 10.2 is right on the homepage. It's pretty flawlessly, especially compared to 10.1.
I just emailed the Dolphin HD devs and made them aware that this issue exists. I also let them know that Opera has fixed this issue, so it's not Honeycomb OS specific.. rather a coding issue on their part. I assume they modeled the base of Dolphin after the stock browser, hence why they show the same lag issue and also the same highlighting of the text field/box.. not sure if this blue highlighting is causing the lag, but Opera sure doesn't show this.
If everyone could just please take a min to send a note to the Dolphin devs letting them know also, I'm hoping we could get them to update this browser with the lag fix. I'd rather not use Opera, and I'm sure you prefer Dolphin more as well.
You could easily contact the devs in the Android Market.. within the Dolphin browser app page
Update:
Got a response from the devs. They're looking into this issue now. Hopefully you guys sent them a note also, so we could give this issue some priority
Definitely will do. I use dolphin as my default browser on my phone, but it needs some work on tablets.
I thought more people would actually put the effort to try and get a fix for this browser. I guess people aren't bothered enough by the lag. I hope I'm wrong and that more than two people actually wrote the devs.
Anyway, I've been communicating back and forth with the devs. I sent them here to check out the lag while typing in XDA after they requested sites for examples. They are looking into it, and hopes to have a fix soon. They have version 6 developing, and I saw a note for the beta testers, so hopefully it will come soon.
Thanks. I wrote too, and hopefully it'll be fixed soon. Now Google should also get their act together and fix this as well.
Sent them an email about this.
I've also noticed that when searching for images under google search, the page does not load properly; tiny thumbnails that can be zoomed in, but doesn't interactive properly. The stock browser does a good job at this.
Worse than the keyboard lag is the fact that half of the time when I long press a link and click "open in new tab" it doesn't open the tab. Never had that problem on my phone, just the tab. It got so bad that I went back to the stock browser, even though the keyboard lag is worse there.

it happens on the stock browser too. sometimes the new tab will not open. so dolphin is possibly a shell or uses some common api's that stock uses. unless we get the stock browser fixed i doubt dolphin will be able to fix anything w/o writing their own browser like opera did.

Dolphin Browser Question
Is there anyway to have Dolphin Browser keep the navigation/tab bar at the top to be able to scroll down with the webpage... Its annoying to have to go all the way up to the top of the page just to select another tab or address etc.....
i'd like that too. esp since i'd be able to see if a link opens in a new tab or not without having to hit "menu."
agred. Would love to keep tab bar on top. Without it turning "load new tab in background" on becomes a pain in the ass.
I'm assuming this thread originally started with dolphin hd? Have any of you tried dolphin for pad beta?
for a lagless typing in the Dolphin browser and in any other browser for that matter just use the android keyboard not the Samsung one,I am actually typing in Dolphin right now no lag at all.
Did you notice that ICS browser likes to freeze? It is the same story as it was on Honeycomb on TF101.
Generally I try to type an address thet hit enter. The browser just pretends to be loading a www but it seems to do nothing.
I have noticed that. I have been getting force close after force close with this. The weird thing is that this worked great for the first day and then the second day it just has been fc crazy on me.
I guess I am getting the same thing.....
BROWSER IS NOT RESPONDING.
Then it asks
WAIT or CANCEL
The first night after the update, the thing was awesome. Now it seems to stutter and NOT RESPOND every so often.
Also I have to wait for the whole page to load before I can scroll. And sometimes it will load 75% of the page and then take like a minute for the rest.
For example....xda prime - show us your homescreen- that webpage was kicking my primes ass...lol
Btw, wasn't there settings in debug that we can change or turn on. Type About:debug into address bar and then go to settings and click on debug. Then u can change some if the rendering options. Is this a good idea, and what settings should be changed.
Still love my prime, just some little glitches that can be annoying at times.

I have this same problem. Usually when the "Wait or Close" option comes up, the page is already loaded. Annoying but useful,
My browser also does the same thing, sometimes hanging and giving me the 'Not responding' dialogue just as it starts responding again. This happens on my prime under HC and is still exactly the same after updating to ICS. I never have to force close the browser due to it, but the freezing is slightly annoying.
None of this never happens in Opera Mobile. Another good alternative browser better than stock is ICS+ browser. the maker of thumb keyboard made it. He has a thread in themes and apps section. its a free app and getting real good reviews on it now. plus plays flash and everything with no problems.
But there is a problem with flash on opera?
When I have issues just force stop it clear cookies and history plus cache... Fresh start It is a pain but I LOVE ICS's BROWSER!
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201
Dolphin HD locks up too
Any browsers that don't give problems? I saw one post for Opera that was good any others?
Maxathon Browser for Tablets is a pretty nice browser
I have the same problem but it did the same thing more with Honeycomb so ICS was an improvement. It runs faster and better, but there is still some stalls when loading sometimes. However, in Honeycomb this would give me Wait/Force Close messages all the time.
I have the same problem. Noticed it after the latest firmware fix (19th?). Don't recall seeing this happen before.
I don't think its the browser, I think its ICS. I've tried 5 different browsers and they have all had the same issues.
I think it is ICS too. Makes me wondering if Asus is testing anything they release pertaining to the prime? Or if they did, hope they are testing it out on random primes coming out of the assembly line for any abnormality before releasin it. Or maybe they are because we are the beta testers.
I have not experienced freezing, but i get random keyboard lag, where i type an url, and it takes 1 second to register the keyboard presses on the url bar then they print at one pop
I blame the delay on the stock browser's ability to process scripts.
This didn't start till the last update. It was working great before.
If there is one thing I hate about this is that there aren't any good browser on Android. Can't import bookmarks, can't handle flash well, no ad-block adons.
I just use remote desktop so I can use Firefox on Windows. Only real solution.
Hope they figure it out soon, as it is annoying to say the least. I believe it is worse after the latest firmware upgrade also...........
I've noticed the waits a ton since ICS. Never had a problem with Gingerbread. It's quite annoying and my wife thought the same.

Big peeve of mine, too... no ad-block addons. I thought dolphin had one, but I couldn't find it after I wiped my phone. Haven't looked for it since.
Remote desktop is a poor solution though. I can't find any decent VNC clients aside from AndroidVNC, but that doesn't let you pop up the keyboard on a tablet like you can on a phone.
This is something similar to a problem that I had with my blackberry where every time the phone locked when I unlocked it the browser would have closed. It was a security setting.
Now the Note is doing something similar. If I go to a page and after the phone locks when I get back in it the phone is back to the homepage (which is setup to nothing.) Dolphin hd dont do that. I have set both browsers to the same page, let the phone sit and check later and the stock browser is back to the homepage but dolphin is not....
Any help will be appreciated.
Same thing happens to me. I'm guessing it has to do with memory clearing or something. I just use dolphin browser now with desktop mode.
