How to Enable tethering after rooting the Note - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Short and sweet: Remove "TetheringManager." .apk with your favorite root uninstaller (I used titanium backup in case anybody is wondering) and then reboot! I highly recommend making a backup first just on the off chance this effects something in the future we are currently unaware of. And yes it works, as I'm currently writing this from my Xoom tablet tethered to my Note! For those who already have Lte in your area (I don't :-( )....have fun! Don't get throttled!
IN BOLD: I did NOT come up with this hack, guess I'm just the first to think of porting it over from the Samsung skyrocket!
Please hit THANKS button if I help you, I have low very self esteem, and I crave validation! Sent from my Team EOS ICS Xoom

Nice, I already have ClockworkTether just in case, but the stock app/wireless hot spot is always good to have.

Hmmm....hadn't heard of that one before, had to look it up in the market. That's actually really great cuz it doesn't even require root, what's interesting is it doesn't show up in my market on my Note? Had to look on the Xoom to see it. I have always heard that cell companies are more likely to catch you when using apps like that or Barnacle, etc. Not sure if there's any truth to that though.

Koush has explicitly said that using clockwork tether should be undetectable by the network. It was one of the purposes of him creating it.
The guy asking the apk should google for it, koush had it posted on his g+ page

so if we delete tetheringmanagler.apk, and just use the stock tether, we can be detected by AT&T u saying?
also: im on a 3gig plan, does AT&T still crack down on tethering when you have a limited plan?(i mean if i go over i would pay big money anyway)

The only clockwork tether that I've found on the market is USB only, and is the same one that Koushik Dutta has on his google +, is there any that enables wi-fi tether instead of USB?
Thanks

What I'm not understanding from this thread is if there's a definite way to tether without ATT knowing about it,
Also, if they find out, do they charge your, or just text you to stop or what?

I can also confirm and i have done it on MANY ROMS...uninstall, freeze, tethering manager then use a wireless tether app and DONE. Also, sometimes if you can't find an app on the MKT try to diasble your data and look in mkt while on wifi...more apps show up .....
Just an FYI...hit thanks if i have helped

First they send you a text saying " Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 866-975-0005 for details"
after that, they send you a letter asking you to stop tethering or they will change your plan to a one that allows you to tether, and if you have "unlimited data" you will lose it.

I can confirm this does NOT work. The app doesn't even copy update.zip to my SD card. I was able to pull the zip file from unzipping the apk, however it fails signature when I do the recovery step.
give it a day or two at the max after tomorrow. I'm betting by the weekend this phone will be rooted and fully open for ROM's and whatever your heart desires.
I for one wouldn't trust a one click root that wasn't specifically made for the fascinate itself.
The app would need to be able to "handshake" with the device, so without specific parameters, no way this could work- unless of course designed for Galaxy S and any "custom" efforts VZW may have asked HTC to add.

He didn't use any fix, my friend.. The one click root doesn't work on the Fascinate.
That root method won't work on the Fascinate, as it needs signed update.zip files for recovery mode. Same as the Epic. Bit meh, really. The Epic root method seems to work though, sortof.
As far as the OCLF lag fix, it should work fine once you have rooted using other methods. I'm guessing the Fascinate is using RFS, so it probably would speed up your device.

wifi tether help

Hi guys,
Im trying to help a friend, He has the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, the phone is rooted, has super user. I Dl'd and installed the Android wifi tether 2.07apk from the google dev site. started up the app. started tether without issue, looked on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet, found the android tether wifi, tried to connect and message pops up on my tablet stating something about adhoc is not supported.
I have a Droid Incredible running Nil's sense 3.5 rom and have the same android tether app, I can start up tethering, turn tethering on, connect and surf the web on my tablet, with no mention of the adhoc compatibility thing.
Im not up on Samsung devices, I have always had HTC phones. So im not sure if this a Samsung issue or what.
I compared his tether app settings to mine and both are the same.
Im at a loss here and could really use some advice about how to fix the issue.
Thanks
Hitch
Try downloading the newer version 3 beta 6 from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk&can=2&q=
Be sure to go into settings and change device-profile to samsung fascinate.
It may work with that version...

its called Evil Fascinate from the samsung galaxy forums. I told him he needs to start getting his roms from here, he just rooted for the first and has a lot to learn.
I know he likes roms that are really themed, If you any suggestions for a stable, themed rom that has tether baked in I will flash it for him and see if he likes it.

I have tried barnicle, but We get the same message when trying to connect from our tablet to the phone (AdHoc is not supported) and it wont connect, no matter what tether app I try I get the AdHoc not supported message.
I dont get this message when tethering my tablet to my Droid Incredible.
Thats why I was thinking it had to do with Samsung firmware, but I really have no idea and Im hoping that you Samsung guys can get my friend fixed up.
An easier question might be "what tether app do you use on your Fascinate"
Hitch
I use open garden, but I have never tried tethering to a tablet...only pc's.
Meh, easy fix for the ad-hoc thing. In wifi tether (I use pre10, 6 should work) go to settings, set your device profile to Google NexusOne and your setup method to Netd (master) and it will run in infrastructure mode and run fine. Tablets will connect and receive internet.

Turn my Fascinate into a mini tablet for my children?

SO i just got a GSII for xmas and I want to pass down my old phone to my children so they don't bug me to let them play with my new phone all the time
Can anyone create a rom package for me that would allow them to only get on wifi, play games, and surf the internet?
If not can anyone give me some instructions for how to disable calling and data all the time?
Thanks,
when the phone is deactivated it can no longer make calls or use data. It will only be able to use wifi to do everything you need. Its like an iPod now.

I know on the Eris forum, someone came up with a script to disable the CDMA/EVDO raidio and the dialer app.

Miui or touchwhiz is ideal for a children. Cyanogenmod is too advanced and or ugly looking.
I have 2 that I am wanting to do this with and would love this!!!!!
Why couldn't you just use root explorer to remove the phone.apk
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I think that might mess up the market access...
You can also put a PIN on the phone functionality. Not sure if this only applys to GSM phones, but under security - there is a Set up SIM card lock.
Edit: hmm yeah, don't see it on the fascinate.

easiest way to do it would be to deactivate it and then either use a custom launcher to hide the apps, or get a locking app and password protect the phone and whatever else app. then you don't need to have a custom rom or anything and you still know the password if you did need to access those apps in an emergency.

[Guide] Rezound WiFi Tethering Fix For Other Android Devices.

So lately there has been lots of issues with people and their Rezounds using WiFi tethering. As most of you already know the sure fire way to make WiFi work is by broadcasting using adhoc. Most devices don't see this type. So here is an easy work around (Android devices only. Other phones, tabs etc...)
*NOTICE. DO NOT DO THIS ON YOUR REZOUND. THIS IS ONLY TO BE DONE ON A WIRELESS DEVICE THAT DOESNT SEE YOUR REZOUNDS WIRELESS TETHERING BROADCAST. SUCH AS A TABLET OR OTHER ANDROID DEVICE*
Download the zip from the link, Turn off wifi on the android device you're doing this on, extract the wpa_supplicant file, replace the old with the new (In system/bin ) [Might want to make a backup of the original wpa_supplicant before you replace it] and set the permissions as follows with root explorer or any other root exp app...
After completing these steps, your device should now see the adhoc broadcast from your rezound. It should have a (*) before the SSID.

Hope this helps. It did for me! Now I don't have to keep switching back to my Tbolt when I want wireless on my tab! =)

Question: Where is this bin from?

the file is appreciated, but knowing where it came from is important before trusting one's wireless communications to something found on a forum.

You didn't do this on your phone did you? Its ment for a device that you wish to give your phones wifi tethering to. IE: a tablet or other android device. You don't mess with your phone at all. Read carefully. You simply replace the wpa_supplicant file in the system/bin folder of the tablet or other android device that's not "seeing" your wifi tether broadcast from your phone. If you made a back up before you replaced this, restore it. If you need, I will help you. PM me and I'll get back asap. At work right now til 10pm (eastern) but will do what I can while here at work.

You do not put this file on your phone... you put this file on the Android device which you are trying to enable to connect to your phone via ad-hoc.
Also, it should be noted that there are many different unique configurations out there, and you should look for a wpa_supplicant file specific to your device before trying one designed for another device. Different wireless chips in different phones/tablets across different versions of Android might not be cross compatible.

This thread really doesnt belong in development although I appreciate the OP's willingness to bring knowledge to the community. This is a device specific issue with "other" android devices therefore adds no value to Rezound development.
Also, each device may have a differnt supplicant file but that I cannot confirm 100%. I would recomend to all that you search the device specific forum for this fix.

Enable wifi tether on leaked ICS [CDMA]

Screw verizon.
The original with video was probably better...

It is supposed to turn wifi off.... It is the router or hotspot or however you see it.
So nobody has gotten the wifi tether app from gb to work?
So this allows you to use the Mobile Hotspot app for free? Or do you mean it just allows you to use it on this phone? Might also want to clarify that before people start getting charged extra tethering charges.
You can use googles wireless tether beta 11 to wireless tether. You have to change the device profile to samsung galaxy nexus lte cdma then change the setup method to netd (master) then you will be able to tether without changing the entitlement value
Snowrider's explanation works perfectly. Thanks!

I have the 3.1 beta 11, did as you said, and my nook couldn't connect. I also had the routing fix checked, but Nook couldn't see network if it wasn't.

Does not work on Leaked ICS. Error code 14.
anybody able to get there tether to work??
Easiest method is to use the stock hotspot via the sqlite modifications. I've used wifi tether a million times, but if I can use the stock for free.... Why not?

Mine was working. I recently changed to a different ROM.. the SQlite hack works flawlessly so you can use the stock wifi tether app.
If you go the sqlite way you have to be using version 1.5 or you get that error 14 code. Also the beta 11 version won't work for the nook because its not an lte device. But it does work for leaked ics because that's what I'm running

Does doing the SQL method cause the built in tether to be free just like the wifi tether app?

anyone else having any luck with the wifi tether beta 11? it worked perfectly on gb, cant seem to get it to work... did as what was told, changed to galaxy nexus, and changed method to netd.... no dice though...
Here is a quote from the comments of the article link in the OP :
"You can use aSQLite manager and aShell instead of SQLlite for free in the market (bit of a noob so took me a while to understand any of this). Path is data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings to get to it"
I followed this, found the check, changed to 0, will reboot for safety, check and report back. Just trying to save some people some money where possible.
EDIT: worked in open mode, not with WPA2
