Browsing - Font Size - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even on my desktop I end up pressing CTRL+= to increase font size. When I do this it usually doesn't affect the layout of the website at all. All what it does is increase the font size without creating any scrolling. It means the whole window is visible so I don't need to scroll left/right to read and at the same time I got th ebenefit of being able to read (enlarging the font size).
How do I do this in Android? I have Firefox browser and the default browser.
Is there a way where I can increase font size on the run (or from setting). Zooming in will force me to scroll right and left which is VERY inconvenient for reading. If I can just do this CTRL+= thing which prevents scrollers and fits the whole text on the screen.
Is there a way to do such a thing using Android Smartphones?

[Q] Scroll ListView programmatically while touching the screen.

Hey guys, maybe the title is little confusing so let's make it clear.
Many of you know the Go Dev Team and the Go Launcher. The Go Launcher has the feature, that allows to scroll the list, while dragging the icon over the boundaries. I need to implement something like this in my app, but I've encountered some problems, maybe my approach is incorrect.
The main problem is, that it is hard to scroll the list while the screen is being touched already.
1. Dispatching touch events to the ListView while touching the screen equals kaboom.
2. Methods like smoothScrollBy are great, but they behave in different way while touching the screen. They will scroll the list only by height of the screen, no matter how many times this method is invoked. After that the ACTION_CANCEL event is generated and I'm loosing control over dragging object, so I can't scroll further.
3. The scrollBy method in View. When using it on ListView it creates empty space while scrolling. I think I am scrolling whole container then, so I don't see any chances here.
And here goes the question. Has anybody tried something like this and can tell more about it?

[q] Windowed mode

I know it seems an odd thing to want (maybe), but is it possible to have a windows style GUI on Android? (And NOT windows mobile, ick blegh yuk)
The reason I ask is that with screens getting bigger, and densities lower, (I use my S2 at 160, and have used it down at 120 without too much trouble - 120 is half the size of the default density so why couldn't it be used to display twice as much?) there is not reason we couldn't HAVE two useable 'windows' open at once, for example, a webpage and the dialer for typing contact numbers over without losing your temper with the annoying copy/paste function that alternates between selecting half a number or the entire webpage.
A network diagnostic tool and terminal emulator open at once side by side.
Those apps that clear the input fields when you tab away from them to double check what you are trying to type in...
And if nothing else, because it would be kinda cool. Well, I think it would be.
Hum interessing idea !
If I understand, like this :

But on Android , yep ?
That. OMFG yes that.
Is there ANYTHING like that for Android?

JB / MeanBean: any way to change gmail font size?

The ability to make the font larger seems to have disappeared...
??
thanks.
It looks like the answer to this is no.
The next question is does anyone know how to revert to a prior version of Gmail? One where you can adjust the font size?

Open Gmail and select settings then general settings. You have 2 options here, you can place a check mark in the "Auto-fit Messages" option and then use pinch to zoom to enlarge text. Or you can uncheck the box and then the text will be larger but you will have to scroll side to side sometimes.
Also, you can go into the main settings page, and under display, gestures and buttons and increase the font size there. But that will increase the fonts on your whole phone.

Thanks for the reply. The issue with the auto-fit/pinch zoom is that it does not automatically reflow the text, so you have to either scroll back and forth (!!) or double tap. THIS IS WAY LESS ELEGANT than simply enabling a larger default font size, and is a lot more work. *reminds me of a blackberrry, where you have to hit 10 buttons in order to be able to see a properly formatted html message. Not good.*
Overall it is clunky now. So the question is, why remove the functionally in the first place?!? It's a dumb step backward.

[Q] Partially Scrolling HomeScreen

Is it possible in Android to have partially scrolling homescreens? In other words, can you have a homescreen set up so that instead of going page-by-page, you can scroll half a page at a time, or dynamically (i.e., a full swipe = a full screen, half swipe = half screen).
I've done a bit of searching on this, and haven't been able to find anything. I was wondering if anyone has looked into this before.

Android web browsers - unwanted zoom on text field selection

Hi,
This is a thing that has annoyed me with Android from the start, but after a lot of searching, I have not found a way to disable or stop the behavior.
So my problem is that with all versions of Android and all the web browsers for Android I have tried, web pages always zoom in when you select a text entry field on a web page.
So for example on my Note 3 and Nexus 7 I go to, say theregister.co.uk. The phone /tab is in landscape mode and the page is set to a zoom where all the article titles are legible. There is a search field at the top right hand corner of the web page which is also a a legible size. I select it to enter text and the screen is zoomed in so that the field fills the whole of the screen, that is not filled by the keyboard.
If any of the text I start to enter brings up any suggestions, due to the zoom level, they are lost behind the soft keyboard. I zoom out to look at them and they dis-pear. I select the text field again to add or delete text, to make those suggestions come up again and I get zoomed in to far again. I then give up put the phone or tablet down and use a windows laptop etc instead.
Now I understand why this would have been desirable initially in Android, when phones had small screens and on ones with small screens today, but why is this needed on larger screens or even tablets?
It makes things like posting this forum post very frustrating on an Android device. I know there is an App for XDA, but is is not a powerful as using the forum direct through a web page. So I cannot replace having a windows etc PC around as Android does not give comparable web page interaction experience.
So I wanted to know if anyone knew of a way of disabling this behavior if so desired? Or if there is a browser out there where this does not happen?
