Unlock codes would be nice
Especially after AT&T states they refuse to provide any unlock code for the Galaxy Note until December 2012. Not exactly happy, all the more reason to really dislike them.

AT&T will release unlock codes to customers who have had the Note for atleast 6 months on contract. That's what a rep said. If you purchased the Note when it was released (Febuary 19) then you should be able to get the code.

I had success via ATT support web chat. Told them I'm going to Europe for a month and needed unlock code. Next reply from the rep was the code. Took 5 minutes total. :good:
Yes, if you've been on contract for a while, it's free.
In my case I bought the phone off-contract and it only cost a few dollars to unlock it on eBay.
I bought mine no contract and I got the code from at&t live chat for free.
I suspect that's because you're on AT&T, while I'm using an AT&T phone on T-Mobile
I spoke to an AT&T internation rep on the online chat at about 3am and they gladly unlocked my 2 i717's with no problem... Now I just need a sim card to test it with lol. Will I be able to use a t-mobile sim in a stock phone or do I need to flash a t-mobile modem?
The T-Mobile sim should suffice, no need to flash a new modem for basic voice+edge.
(You'll need to flash a modem to take advantage of 4g/3g data speeds, T989UVLE1 worked for me)

I was only asking to initiate the unlock menu, I would never used it unlocked anyway.
Yep, no modem needed for that

Hi guys! I recently won Samsung's Galaxy Note Studio contest and I will be getting an At&t Galaxy Note for free The only problem is I'm on T-Mobile and I would like to know if there are any FREE unlock methods? I mean I'll pay $24.99 on Cell Unlock, but I'd rather not. Has anyone unlocked by calling At&t directly? Also, are there any DIY methods?
I heard there was a method you can unlock and use T-Mobile's 4g speeds? Is it reliable? Should I just do that? So many questions. Anyways, since I don't have At&t, they offered me a $299 check. What do you guys think? Should I take the phone, root it, unlock it, ETC, or take the check?!
Thanks for your help!

Take the phone, whether or not you use it, you can sell a brand new note for more than 300. As for unlocks, if you do a quick search, there's a couple threads and I think the cheapest I saw was $8. There's a T-mobile modem that seems to do decently, but I have no experience with it as I'm on at&t so I'd search for that too.
Many answers are found in previous posts, I'm sure you can find them. Also If you don't want the note, I'll give you 300 for it I can always use a spare.
Haha, thanks! But I will hold on to it for a while... lol
If I can't get it to work for T-Mobile Ebay or Craigslist it is!
You're getting a $550+ device for free. Pay the $25 to unlock it. You will not be sorry. If you then don't like it you can sell the unlocked device for more than $550.
Congrats on winning the contest.
You can flash a Tmo modem after unlocking. Currently you have to pay to get it unlocked. I called AT&T for the unlock and was told several different times that since it is exclusive to AT&T you have to wait 6 months for the free unlock.

No, I drew something in the Note Studio, although mine was clearly NOT the best, I somehow won! A lot of people did a lot better.
Take the device, sell it, get the note coming to tmo soon.

No you can't. You will have to pay a company like CreekDirt mentioned. You should have picked up the unlocked international version.
You may also want to go talk to ATT about it. Explain that you will be travelling to a region of the world where ATT has no service and that you intend to get a SIM card locally and would like to use your Galaxy Note. ATT can unlock the phone for you, and if you are polite about it sometimes they will do it prior to the 6 month window they generally have for new phones, especially if you are a long time customer.
Att will only unlock it after they lose exclusivity of it which would be when the T-Mobile version comes out.

I don't know if their policy changed since 2007 but back then, I e-mailed their customer support for unlock code for my phone because I told them I am currently out of country in Burma, a country they don't have roaming partner so I would like to use the local SIM in my phone and they e-mail me unlock code within 24 hours with the unlock code.
Yeah they used to do that. Lately they claim they can't provide codes if they are the exclusive carrier. They denied me an unlock code on the Note and Samsung Focus Flash saying they won't provide them until a certain date.

bormasina, It is usually all laid out for you on the unlockers website, you just fill out the form with your imei, carrier etc... then they email you the unlock code.Sometimes it is almost instantly emailed but if not,it do sent take long. That info is also usually on the unlockers website too.

It took about 10 minutes for my code to come
They were willing to do it with me, I was told that Samsung has asked them not to release unlock until August 19th. At that time they will happily provide the unlocks. I've been with AT&T for 10+ years, they have never hesitated to give me an unlock code except for an iPhone. I admit, its the first time they've delayed, but I have no reason to doubt their explanation. Honestly, the CSR (all 3, I tried several times) all seemed surprised that they didn't have access to do it.
So, in short, if you need it now, pay. Otherwise, be patient. Either we'll figure out how to unlock it, or AT&T can do it when they get the codes.
The unlock code will typically require stock Rom ...
My code kept failing.. I called supplier, they insisted I needed a stock Rom.
Reverted to stock and paid for code worked. Phone now remains unlocked regardless of Rom i install.

>> there is some 'minor differance' eg ATT - TMobile .... but then its 'GSM frequency rate' and you can go from one to another (provided you have right SIM card....
keen to know
thanks
Freely admit others may be smarter than me.
But I rooted but did not unlock this phone.
Installed several ROMs none of which spontaneously unlocked the phone from the carrier unlock.
Attempts to install different carrier SIM didn't work until I reverted to stock ROM and executed a carrier unlock with code. Even installing an AT&T ROM, the phone still only worked with Telus SIM. I didn't care if the phone was officially 'unlocked' -- I just needed to be able to use an AT&T SIM in it. Installing an AT&T stock ROM didn't accomplish that, nor did any of the many choices available here in the DEV forum.
Advice I got right here in XDA was such that I had to unlock first... before installing other ROMs. Perhaps, I was misled?
On a Galaxy Infuse 4G, I was able to root the phone and find the unlock code inside a file located on the phone. Then unlock before new ROM install.
Wasn't able to do that successfully on the note.

Oddly enough, I haven't purchased an unlock code, yet my device recognizes my T-Mobile sim. I've only rooted and installed custom roms + radios. Maybe I'm lucky.

When I bought my SII at&t released a batch of factory unlocked phones. I don't think they knew.
HI, I just wanting to throw something out there...I was looking at some different sites about unlocking the galaxy note...and I was also checking the reviews for the sites too(can never be too careful).. and I ended up picking cellunlock.net and going with that one...the unlock was 39.99 but after using the promo code I searched in google (android50) it brought it to 19.99..well while I was waitng on the unlock email I stuck my sim card from tmobile usa in there and come to find out it was already unlocked...well I still got a unlock code in my email about 12 hours later but never tried it cuz there was no reason too...well since then I got a new note ( a white one).. and it was not already unlocked...believe I checked haha...but I checked reviews again and there were several saying that the never got a code..and several saying that the codes they sent were fake...but I really needed the note unlocked and at&T wasn't helping..so I went for it anyway...I got the unlock code in my email about 28 hours later and I tried it and it luckily worked!...now that was about 4 hours out of the time frame that they gave me...but it worked...so I just thought Idf let people know my experience...but try at your own risk!
at&t has been giving out the unlock codes for free.
I dunno if the sale is still on, but I got my code from unlockthatphone.com for about $14.
I talked to AT&T international care on the website and they gave me the unlock code in 2 minutes without a problem

You weren't kidding. Called and said I wanted to use the phone overseas and gave them the imei number and a minute later she had the unlock code for me. Nice!!
Same for me - I got the unlock code straightaway on a web chat with AT&T. The site says something about a limit on the number of unlocks one can obtain on an account, I think it was something like 5 per year.
I don't see why they would give you a hard time unless you're unlocking a bunch of phones on your account.
Same for me, I used the AT&T International Support web chat and they gave me the code right away. Too bad you need a non-AT&T SIM to actually use it.

If you are with ATT and you are in the military, all you have to do is go to ATT.com/deviceunlock, submit the request and it should ask you to upload your papers for leave.
You will then get your code within 24-48 hours.

nope not for the att mega
I went on cellunlocker site yesterday and priced the att unlock. It was $30. But make sure you activate with the original carrier before unlocking and using different sim. There is a new thing called REGION lock which samsung has started using. If you unlock before activation with the original carrier you will not be able to use your phone internationally. Cell unlocker explains it pretty well with a disclaimer about their service.
They say it applies to all USA phones released with 4.4 kitKat and all Samsung newer phones. The mega isn't specified, but all other top samsung galaxy phones are.
@ randy, thank you for your service and stay safe.

If your phone has been used previously with the original carrier, this will not apply to you. However, if your device is BRAND NEW, your must activate it with the original carrier. > Seems as if it was activated just once then can be unlocked no issues. Seems this mostly applies to NEW phones...
I had my Mega on MetroPCS for 3 months though I am no longer on MetroPCS. I called them 3 times and each time they put the request in and say I have to wait 3 business days for email but they never send email.... frustrating - I do not want to spend $30 because MetroPCS is supposed to give it to me for free.

If you are a AT&T customer/former customer(i e have.had a number) your good you can request unlock code. If your new you have to be with them for x amount of days (40 or so). Or find someone willing to add it to their account so you can unlock assuming you've paid outright. If you were never a customer YMMV but most likely no unless they feel like it then it will be emailed to you

I'm from Argentina so I guess the only option would be to find someone from US who is a ATT customer willing to do the work for me. If any reads these and want to give me a hand with these please contact me via PM.
Typically, the conference organizer will give you instructions about how to obtain a unlock code from them directly. Calling AT&T directly won't help.

That's where mine came from - I was there. Wow, the demo gods did not smile on Samsung
Anyway, no - no info was given, and I honestly doubt any thought was given to how to unlock these "dev" phones for non-AT&T customers. I happen to be on AT&T should I want to use a sim in mine.
If you register on the AT&T forums http://forums.att.com/ then you can send a PM to ATTCustomerCare (http://forums.att.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage/tab/compose/note-to-user-id/192773) and tell them the situation. That team has been the go-to team for "edge case" unlocks. Alternately you can keep trying to call the support number until you reach a supervisor who can ok the unlock, but essentially you're reaching those same people via the forum without the hassle of endlessly calling.
You can get it unlocked using cell unlocker. It took them a few days but they finally sent me an unlock code that worked first try.
I must have been the first one they did because they kept sending me emails asking I had tried it yet. Because I was travelling I had to wait a couple if days.

My fiancé and I are in the same situation. We also got the watches at the Samsung Dev Con, but we're T-Mobile customers. (Also, did you notice that the Note 4s they raffled off were for Verizon?) We already tried calling AT&T, to no avail, and now I've posted on their forums asking for help and I'm sending the customer care people a PM, as recommended in this thread.
Worst case scenario, we get our friend (an AT&T customer) to get the unlock codes. But if it comes to that, we can probably get yours unlocked with ours, if you want. We're happy to help.

If you are not an AT&T customer and are on T-Mobile or Sprint, I would recommend selling the AT&T version and getting one from your Carrier that way the Radio Bands will work for you.
If you are out of country, I would recommend selling the AT&T USA Version as some others have posted where they can't get apps if the Country doesn't match their Phone, or something like that.
That being said, if you are looking at selling the AT&T one cheap, send me a PM. I bought one, had it about 6 hours before the wife confiscated it for her selfish purposes.

So you think the SMS/MMS wouldn't work?
Non-us SDC participants beware of GSM-bands if you are European

I'm from Argentina so I guess the only option would be to find someone from US who is a ATT customer willing to do the work for me. If any reads these and want to give me a hand with these please contact me via PM.

I am from Norway and got mine at the Samsung Developer Conference. I unlocked mine using cellunlocker.net. I received the network lock code less than an hour after submitting the order and it worked like a charm.
HOWEVER: For other non-US-citizens, you need to check whether the AT&T-device has support for your local GSM-bands. Here in Norway we have GSM 900/1800 and the AT&T device is only GSM 850/1900 from what I can find on the net. Which matches my end result of not being able to connect to my network even after unlocking.

850/1900 bands are for North America only. Only two other countries outside of North America use also use these two bands: Brazil and Australia.

That's not right. If you use AT&T messenger on the phone (as AT&T wants you to do), you will not be able to reply from the watch. So, you will have to switch back to the Samsung stock Messages app.
MMS might be a problem but regular text SMS won't be a problem. For MMS, you may need to add AT&T MMS APN.
