I installed ICS on my 32gb touch pad recently and come to find out the option to mount as usb is gone and now google is doing some stupid mpt crap.
Even though ICS alot of eyecandy the usb thing really takes away from the OS feeling for me.
I may just go back to cm7 or get one of the other OSes to work like Bohdi or whatever its called.
Does anyone think that the cwm team will fix Google's tyrannical decision and put the option for mounting as usb back in,
or is it an issue that's dead in the water and they're not gonna touch it.
Possibly, but I think MTP is how ICS does it. I don't really find it that much of an inconvenience since Windows 7 plays well with MTP devices, but I could see others having issues since regular mass storage is a much more universally supported. You can mount as mass storage from CWM.
I'm not sure how to use mpt. My computer no longer recognizes my touchpad when I plug it in. I have to boot into webOS to do file transfers.
Neither can I, apparently not all PCs play nice with MTP, only one of my PCs was able to communicate with ICS on the touchpad, 2 others were not.
one of those being my work winXP, where I needed it most,
and its heeeeelllllaaa slow.
Same problem here... My Windows 7 64-bit has problem when I plug-in the Touchpad.... therefore the MTP is not able to use...
I am using Win7 64bit and I got no problem with MTP. Just make sure you uncheck "USB debugging"

Yeah. This stinks. I spent time and money to get an external USB hdd to connect to my TP. Works fine in CM7 but not at all in CM9.

As it turns out, Linux does work with MTP. You just have to install mtpfs. And I also got my external USB drive working via the OTG port in CM9 Alpha 2. CM9 is missing the option in the settings to mount the USBDisk but you can do it manually via the Terminal.
Code:
su root
mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/usbdisk
That is assuming the vfat partition on your USB drive is the first partition. On mine I have an NTFS partition and a vfat. So I change sda1 to sda2.
so has anyone tried airdroid with ICS? if it works, might as well cut the cord.
Reason
Actually MTP only, is a sort of improvement over the well know Mass Storage.
With MTP the device can be mounted on two places at the same time, and this way Android doesn't need some ugly workarounds like must have partitioning on main disk.
Just install the necessary drivers on yours PCs and be happy!

I am a complete noob when it comes to Android, having first got my G-Tab yesterday. I'll give some background before I get to my question.
Yesterday, I sideloaded a couple of apps by essentially copyng them over to the root directory on the G Tab. But, like most others, I found the stock OS very slow and unresponsive. So I installed CyanogenMod 7 as per some simplified directions that I found. Everything went fine. That's not the problem.
My problem is that I cannot sideload anymore. When I plug in my G-Tab through the USB, I hear the Windows two thumps, and nothing happens. I look to see if my tablet is showing up in the Winders Explorer, and it just shows a bunch of memory sticks that when I click on them, I can't access. Also, nothing is showing up on the tablet either (no dialog boxes like under the stock OS, nothing). This is a big problem for me since I don't have access to WIFI at the moment.
Does anyone know how I can make my computer and tablet see each other? If you tell me to do something, please tell me where to find it. For example, on another thread, someone advised someone else to turn on USB debugging for something, but I can't find any option for USB debugging in Cyanogenmod 7 under settings. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Additional info:
Computer: Laptop running Windows Vista
Did you try swiping on the notification area and enabling USB transfer on the tablet?
If you don't do this, your computer will see the USB device but not as mass storage.

Menu >>Settings >> Applications >> Development. 1st choice, USB Debugging.
Thanks. I did swipe in the notification area, and the only notification there was that USB debugging was activated. But still the G Tablet and computer cannot see each other.
Double check in your device manager (PC) to make sure there are no issues with the drivers.
Thanks. I found it and also found out that it is turned on by default. So I guess that doesn't help.

Does Cyanogenmod 7 require special drivers? The drivers worked fine on the stock build, and nothing changed since then. Everything looks ok.
I plugged my Gtablet (CM7.02 with Pershoots 4/30/11 kernel) in to my computer just now to test. I haven't used it on this computer since installing CM7. I did just work on my boss's Gtablet the other day running both stock TapnTap and VEGAn 5.1.1 and it worked fine on his.
I plugged in the tablet, Windows 7 (32bit) said it was installing drivers, driver install completed successfully.
On my tablet I then swiped up the notification bar and tapped on the selection that said "tap here to mount USB to share files with your computer" (or something like that). The Android mascot screen popped up and I tapped "Turn on USB".
New drive opened up on my computer that was the gtablets /sdcard.
So it works and used the same driver as before.
No special drivers for CM7.
One nice thing about CM7 (or maybe Ginger) is that now when plugging in you get access to both the internal and external SD cards from PC.

My computer Vista (32 bit) at no point said it was installing drivers after I upgraded to Cyanogenmod 7.
When I swipe the notification area (and I assume that the notification area is the area at the top of the tablet's screen), I get a menu that tells me that USB debugging is activated and that's all. No option to mount USB. And no screens popped up to ask to turn on USB. None of this.
And when I plug in the USB, as I mentioned, I get the two tones from Windows, and 3 new removable disk drives appear. But when I click on each, I get am asked to insert a new disk.
That's all the info I have at the moment.
At this point, I'm so sick of it. I think that probably somewhere a switch is not flipped or a box is not checked, but I have no idea where that could be. I'm seriously considering using ClockWork mod to restore the system. But I'm loathed to do this since I spent 2 hrs. downloading Cyanogen Mod last night (I have a slow internet connection).
I would suggest that you turn off "USB debugging". That setting exists to activate adbd on the tablet, and normal users, usually, never need it. Enable "USB debugging" only if you need to use adb.
After disabling USB debugging, reboot the tablet, and then connect the USB cable to the mini-USB slot on the gTablet. As soon as you do that, on CM7, a USB Mass Storage screen with a green Android will pop-up with a message saying "USB connected" and button to "Turn on USB Storage".
Click the button and a warning that "If you turn on USB storage, some application you are using will stop and may be unavailable until you turn off USB storage.", will appear. Select OK. The green Android will now turn orange and the screen will say "USB storage in use".
Use the "Turn off USB storage" when you're ready to wrap up.
Ok. I think I might have solved the problem, but some intervening events makes me not sure. Basically, I restored to factory and then put in a different ROM, VEGan7. However, while doing this, I think I might have found the solution to my original problem.
It turns out that it does seem to be a problem with Windows, or at least with Vista. I had the same problem with VEGan7. But this time, I right-clicked on the "removeable disk" that appeared under "Computer" (where you see all your drives) when I hooked up the G TAB via USB. After I right-clicked, I selected properties and then clicked on the "Hardware" tab. You will see a list of all possible storage devices to associate with that icon. I chose the one containing the string "Tegra2" and I was off to the races. I was then able to perform the actions mentioned above about activating the USB on the G Tab.
I suspect I could have used this technique with Cyanogen 7. The only thing that I question is that I saw 3 removeable disk drives appear and not just one. I hope this helps someone else who might run into the same problem.

Did you by any chance have an external micro SD card on the tablet?
If so, I'm thinking that you saw the 2 SD cards + the APX debug mode device.
flash this zip (in post #3) to mount the internal storage as an SDcard instead of EMMC. If you run that then you should be able to mount the storage when running CM7

also your other option is to boot into Clockwork recovery then go to mounts/storage and mount usb
you should then be able to transfer files back and forth

Thanks, I'll give it a try. What are the ramifications of mounting the internal storage as an SD card instead of EMMC? Do I lose performance? I mean, there must be a reason that the default is EMMC.
I wouldn't want to boot into Clockwork every time I want to transfer something, apps or even music and videos. That would be a real pain. Actually, I was surprised at how long this tablet takes to boot up after a complete shut down.

From what I have read that's the way that Gingerbread does it. Some programs actually have problems with that configuration, that's why people do this.

Do you think you might post the file here. When I go to that link I'm not allowed to download it. The irony is that that link says it came from here but I've used the search and I can't find it here. Maybe it is just day after Cinco de Mayo problems I'm having?
Quick question,
I currently have the Epic, which requires a driver installed on the computer before the SD card will mount properly on a windows PC.
I use my phone to upload things for work now and then, and this is a major hassle for me.
I'm thinking of moving to the Galaxy S2 when it comes out in the US, and I was wondering if the S2 mounts properly without a driver?
It's sad to be jealous of friends with HTC phones that mount properly and don't need drivers installed to simply connect to a pc.
If you set it to 'usb debug mode', it auto installs and will come up as 2 card readers.
It even works on my car's head unit so it is in usb mass storage mode.
Without debug mode it'll be detected as a phone but I'm not sure what it'll come up as since all the pc ive connected it to have samsung Kies.
Personally I use widget apps like 'multi mount sd' so I can still use the phone while the usb is accessible by the pc.
Anyone know how to mount a galaxy nexus to the transformer prime via USB so i can view files on my phone through my tablet? Any help would greatly be appreciated, pretty sure it has something to do with MTP.
Interesting.
With the appropriate cord, obviously, and you set the nexus into USB mode maybe....
Id love to know this too.
Modded by MBOK
I tried it with my Gnex as an MTP device with USB debugging both off and on and didn't get anywhere. I'd love to see that too.
it's kind of hilarious that google baked an MTP server into android but not the client.
in the meantime, try using the Samba Filesharing on your Nexus (requires root) in combination with ES File Explorer on your tablet over a shared wifi network. if you don't have a wifi network to put both devices on then this will work via a wifi hotspot running on either device. it won't be as fast as a direct MTP mount, but it will get the job done.
if you don't like samba or don't want to root your nexus then you can try using an SSH server like SSHDroid in combination with an SCP client like DroidSCP.
works for my htc sensation, no root on either of them.
just plug in to keyboard, select disk drive on phone, debug off on prime, wait a minute or two...use file manager, all data from sd card on phone is at your disposal
Mine shows it connected as a USB device (on the SGN) and charges the phone but using root explorer I cannot find the file system for the SGN. I find it odd that it says it is connected as a USB device but won't let you see the file system.

your htc sensation is gingerbread, right?
in ICS google EOL'd usb direct drive mounting for internal storage. it's still supported for an SD card, but the galaxy nexus has no microSD memory slot (lame). that means the only way to access galaxy nexus storage over usb is MTP, which only has support built into newer versions of windows. macOS has a special application they have to install to connect via MTP. to my knowledge android doesn't have one at all. so, in his case it looks like he is SOL for USB transfer.
at least until an MTP android client comes along.

Dam. I'm really hating this MTP mode. Been wondering this question for a while too. Hopefully one day the prime will get updated with MTP capabilities? *sigh*

How do I enable USB Mass storage mode instead of the stupid MTP og PTP?
Regards,
BTJ
Not sure if this works for the SGS3 but it worked for the SGS2:
Bring up Settings.
Click More… (under Wireless and network).
Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
Select Connect storage to PC then.
Connect USB cable from phone to PC.
Select Turn on USB storage.
That’s all.
Sorry, no such settings in SGS3, we are stuch with MTP or PTP... Don't understand the logic behind removing USB Mass storage mode!! Both MTP and PTP are slow as hell and there is no support for S3 in libmtp at the moment to make matters worse... If I had known this, I would have reconsidered my choice of buying a SGS3.....
BTJ
Like the Nexus, /sdcard is mounted at /data/media (IIRC, mount point could be different), meaning that internal data and the internal sdcard space share the space, rather than being split. UMS removes access to the device that is mounted from the phone, so it cannot be used when the sdcard is shared in this fashion.
I thought libmtp worked? I've been using adb and a GUI for shifting lots of files, qtadb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Seems to be a problem with both SII and SIII... But I will check out qtadb, thx...
BTJ
So am I reading this right. You can't plug a USB cable in, the SD card appears then in explorer?
I have a sensation XE at moment and use this a lot for transferring files at work/home etc.
So can I not access my files normally now that I copy to SD card, eg docs etc?
Nope... But it sounds like you are using Windows so then MTP will work, kind of like you are used to...
BTJ
The idea about using MTP is it allows you to continue to use your phone without disruption, loading Mass Storage un-mounts the sd from your phone.
However I do think we should still be given a choice
Yes, I guess I understand the idea... What I don't understand is why they have removed the choice we used to have.... :-|
BTJ
I stil don't have an S3, but am a little confused on the MTP etc. Also I use a Mac and a Windows PC.
So when you plug in an S3 on a Windows PC, what does it do in MTP mode? just still allow you to drag/drop files? does the S3 come up as another drive or something in explore?
Also anyone with a Mac, how does this work?
cheers

I think I got the jist of that article lol but does this mean android developement were looking for devices to have either internal storage or sd storage but because the SG3 has both its sort of screwed things up a bit?
So UMS might be released in a later patch to allow easier access to added SD storage? Or does the current setting allow access to both storage thru windows pc?
Soz if I come across as a noob I havent got sg3 yet but planning to get one in a few weeks for upgrade and Ive been trying to get the low down on positives and negatives before I get the phone
Keep things simple!
Please can someone answer this simply.
Can I plug in the device into my mac/pc and just transfer any file to the micro SD card whilst it is in the phone?
All I want to do is to be able to put avi files on it as samsung kies or doubletwist doesn't seem to suppor them...

Thanks for the help. Although I figure out what everyone was talking about.
This is how I did it (maybe this will help others noobs as well):
You will need the 'Android File Transfer program' --> google search it!
1.Connect phone to PC (you will see usb icon at the top of the screen)
2. Pull down the notification centre.
3. Touch the usb thing.
4. Click PTP mode
5. Open the file transfer program
BOOM! Rock on nerds!
Has anyone been able to get live usb booting for linux working either in CWR or outside? I have prepared the sd card so that it will boot in adapters but not in the phone. Anyone know what is getting in the way?
I've tried Unetbootin and YUMI both booted up in android and in clockwork recovery with USB storage mounted. It also shows the atrix as having 2 usb devices this way. Like i said, these all boot from a generic sd-usb reader but fail when in the phone.

let me see if I understand you.
you want to boot a pc/device from your sdcard in your atrix using a live distribution you flashed to the sdcard you have in your atrix?
if this is what you want to do... this is a terrible idea. here are the reasons.
the atrix makes a terrible sdcard reader. it is very slow.
when you plug your atrix into the usb port you have to choose usb storage VERY FAST before the bios recognizes the usb bootable devices.
just use a sdcard usb flash drive reader thingy.
I have one of these and they are awesome.

you do have 2 usb devices.
internal emmc and your sdcard.
that is why above I stated that you would have to choose which one to mount.
this is really not a good idea though as again the atrix is a really slow sdcard reader.
Works great with Puppy Linux!
I am in the same boat as the person who started this thread. I have booted Puppy Linux this way for years (from a USB/SDHC flash drive), it works great. Puppy grew up to run from NAND flash media. I to would like to have the option of booting my x86 computers using my Smartphone an expensive USB stick. I currently have to remove the back cover, take out the microSDHC card and place it in a adapter to boot (doable but a pain). More boot options is always good.
Regards, Ron
PS...My BIOS sees the bootable Puopy Linux partition but does NOT boot when I select it.

Yeah making it actually "Bootable" would require actual effort. I can't think of a quick fix
Just like not every computer supports booting from USB, not every USB mass-storage media supports booting from it. I have a couple of seemingly normal standard USB flash drives that just won't boot anything, no matter what I do (it's not the computer, the same computer boots any other OS from any other USB drive just fine). Clearly the Atrix is of those that don't support live booting from its storage. Sorry.
