[Q] Rooting stock XWLA4 kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to root the XWLA4 official stock kernel without flashing another kernel?
I found some threads in the forum but i couldnt find a way without flashing.
My phone specs are:
android version : 2.3.6
Baseband v: I9100XXKI3
kernel v: [email protected] #2
build number: GNGERBREAD.XWLA4

it's easier to just download Odin program then a CF-Root kernal that matches or similar to the one you have, putting phone in download mode connecting your phone, select under pda the cf-root-XX***.tar file and flash. You can do it in 5min. (SEARCH THIS FORUM)
If you going want to be with the big boys you have to be bold.
Search the forums, but the above is as simple as 123.
If all faills (which it shouldn't unless you have a messed up infected computer with a faulty usb cable) then you can just start again and flash a whole new stock firmware + pit file - also information available here in the forum.
Ps. remember to back up before doing it.

There are other methods .
Zergrush etc .
But why root do you need root to run something ???

I ve tryed this before. It didnt work

True. Neither latest zergrush nor the given link for rooting ICS work. Are there any other methods out there to root the kernel despite flashing the CF kernel?

I have stock kernel, stock rom and rooted mobile, I just used a cwm.zip to get cwm then flashed a file containing su and root access
As in the thread;-)

thanks Gishan here.
you might wanna rename your thread to be a little bit more specific imo.
but anyway was your phone stock rom and just rooted?
custom rom?
you can just install superuser from the market and you will find out if you still rooted.
but my guess is you have updated your phone through kies, if so then no you lost root because its updated the whole phone,
if you need to root again go to this thread post 7 has the kernel you need to flash to get root back

I also think that you lost root.
Alternatively you can check it by using Root Check (free app from the Market).
The link to Chainfire's CF-Root kernel thread is good. (Although there are several other ways to root the phone.)
CF-Root kernel for XW_KJ3 will work fine for you.
After flashing this, you will definitely have root back.
Good luck !

There is no insecure version of JPKG2 in Odia's thread [KERNEL] Insecure Kernels for use with rooting.
If you're just wanting to root your phone, nothing more, you don't need any to flash a different kernel, just use [10/Nov][ROOTING/UNROOTING] Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit [v2.0](zergRush Exploit).
somebody rooted s2 with the above method?
also i heared that this soft rooting is not a complete root. is that true?
is there any alternative insecure kernel available for jpkg2?
is there any way i can get JPKG2 kernel to root my phone , yes i searched alot and cant find any solution

[Q] Queston about rooting on 2.3.5

I just updated to firmware 2.3.5, and my Baseband version is I9100XXKI4 and my Kernel version is I9100XWKI8. Build number is GINGERBREAD.XWI8.
So if i am going to flash with Odin, what do I flash? I have found a insecure Zip-files with XXKI4 and another with XWKI8, but I am not sure wich one of them would work. I rooted the phone on 2.3.3, and then I flashed the kernel, but now i'm not sure, since XWKI8 is my baseband version. I know this is a little noobie, but I want to root my phone and not brick it.
So my question is, flash with XWKI8 or XXKI4

The easiest way to root your phone is to flash CF-Root kernel.
Here is Chainfire's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root.
Please read first post.
For your current ROM, you should flash CF-Root kernel for XW_NEE_KI8 from 6. post.
That's all !
After flashing this kernel (by using PDA section of Odin), you will see a yellow triangle when booting.
In the second post, Chainfire described how to get rid of the yellow triangle after rooting.
The needed stock kernel for your ROM can be downloaded from Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
You can use the XWKI8 stock kernel from the second post.
The password to extract the file is also written in the post.
But you do not need to remove the yellow triangle.
It is optional and up to you.
Good luck !
Thank you!

Yes, zergRush exploit (=> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653) method is also an option to root the phone.
Intratech has described this method in his first post as "Quick Root Guide".
Very "elegant", because you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter won't be incremented.
But as you are a "Noobie", I recommend to flash a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root kernel) to root your phone, which is more simple.
If you read Intratech's Quick Root Guide and feel confident to root your phone like that, then use this method.
If not, stick to Chainfire's CF-Root method.
It is your choice.
Well, I'm not that noob, I rooted my HTC Desire and SGS2 on 2.3.3, but I was just a little confused with this one

[Q] rooting my Indonesa's SGS2 GT-I9100, humbly request for help

hi there
i am so new at this and really need help from you guys.
i have read several thread about how to root your phone and already stuffed with some general ideas of what is rooting, and some terms like rom and kernel. but yet still confused about how to really start the rooting itself.
much of the threads i visit are sort of (as far as i understand) specified for Samsung Galaxy S II GT - I9100 with Ginger Bread 2.3.2 as the firmware. i already updated mine into ics 4.0.3 with specifics below:
baseband version: I9100DXLP7
kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100DXLP7-CL233393 [email protected] #3
build number: IML74K.DXLP7
PDA/PHONE: I9100DXLP7 and CSC: I9100LBLP7
much of the explanation i read, srated with downloading the Odin (attached file), and that's pretty much after where i lost
so please, can anybody help me about this?
thanks in advance, and best regards

I'm sorry, it isnt clear. what exactly do you want help with? Using Odin to flash a custom kernel?
Hi...
Go to ChainFire thread and look for (CF-Root DXLP7) kernel and flash that via Odin.
Second is download ChainFire TriangleAway app to remove the triangle warning on boot.
Thats it you are rooted

yes, i found CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip, unzipped and rooted the tar in it, and according to ChainFire instruction, i think this one is the right one for my kernel.
although i can't flash kernel as instructed by him:
Instructions - If you already have CF-Root
- Copy the zip file to your SD card
- Stop sharing SD card with computer over USB, unplug the cable, etc
- Applications -> CWM -> Flash kernel. Select the ZIP file on your SD card.
- Done
opened the CWM, but no options available and basically the application is running but nothing really happen
what should i do? thanks
ps. i can't ask ChainFire directly on his thread as i haven't posted stuff more than 10 posts yet

[Q] Recovered from a Soft brick. Resetting back to stock.. DOUBTS! :)

Hey Guys!
I just bought the mighty S2 and am loving it.
Baseband version: I9100DDLPA
Build Number: IML74K.XWLP7
I tried rooting my phone with ODIN and CF_ROOT method. This is the file version i used.
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Now after rooting, my phone booted automatically. When i tried restarting, it was getting stuck on the yellow triangle.
I then downloaded the other kernel and tried flashing that too with ODIN.
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
But alas..
Then i downloaded the official ROM for my country and flashed it with ODIN. Fixed my phone. Below is the firmware i used.
GT-I9100_INU_I9100XWLP7_I9100ODDLP9_I9100DDLPA
This runs on ICS 4.0.3. I see that there's one more ROM of my country thats 4.0.4 on samsung-updates.
So my questions are as below
1) Which CF_ROOT version do i use to get my stock firmware rooted?
2) Is 4.0.4 any better than 4.0.3? Where do i find the changelog?
3) Can I flash a firmware of ANY country? Does it matter if I flash the firmware of my neighboring country?
4) Where do i find the stock kernel for my Firmware?
5) Does flashing the official firmware flash the stock kernel along with it? Meaning will it remove the Siyah-s2-v4.1.5 i am currently running :cyclops: ?
6) If 5 is yes, and if i need to by chance send my phone to the service center for warranty, and also if I am running a custom rom, will flashing the original firmware of my country + removing the yellow triangle + resetting the counter bring it back to warranty? ;P
7) Is there a way to try a ROM from the SD card without actually flashing it?
I seriously gotta parcel a crate of beer for the one who answers my questions.. One all set, I am in for trying out a custom ROM!

1 I don't know I use siyah kernel to root although there are full instructions in chainfires thread.
2 4.0.4 is better than 4.0.3 as it's an upgrade , use Google for change log.
3 yes you can flash any countries rom for your device.
4 in Stock rom. Just reflash the ROM to stock kernel, but this will loose root access.
5 yes. Correct.
6. It will remove triangle but you need triangle away app to reset counter. Credits to chainfire
7 no not that I know of.
Sir can I suggest you read the sticky threads in this forum. There are many excellent guides, advice, tips and information. You would do well to read them to save bricking your new device.

Yes to get stock kernel re-flash the whole stock rom. There is a method of extracting the kernel from the zip file but I've never tried it. Easy and safe to re flash whole rom package.

I noticed that flashing the firmware didnt make a single change to my phone. The apps and settings were totally intact. Will installing 4.0.4 too be the same? Also i heard about this brick bug on our phone. Does that happen while only wiping data/cahche using CWM? Is there an anther way of wiping data/cache/dalvik etc? other than factory reset for the bug

When moving between like firmwares (same number) you often do this without wiping data however when upgrading or down grading a full wipe is necessary. To avoid brick bug only wipe with a custom kernel eg siyah etc
