The last two nights, I woke up to my phone causing my alarm clock to buzz continually. Whats weird is that the phone was about 3 feet from the clock...I wasnt receiving a call or anything...
The only variable I can think of is that I have started running MIUI. Could this effect my phone in some way?
I dont know, this may be a dumb thread but when my phone is buzzing out my alarm clock from over 3 feet away, it makes me cautious about putting the damn thing against my head. Watch out for those radio waves guys.....thoughts?

Turn off your phone lol. I was a sound guy for seven years before the recession. This is one of the reasons they tell you to turn of your phone in a theater. Not only can they run on the same or similar frequencies to wireless microphones, they also interfere with speakers. And yes, it doesn't matter if your phone is receiving a call. Sometimes it has to communicate with the towers. Long story short for my sleep muddled brain...turn off your phone or move it to the other side of the room

Thanks! I guess the main concern is that my phone has never messed with my alarm clock before, I never turn it off. I was also on a CDMA network for a while, Im somewhat new to ATT. Are phones more buzzy on GSM networks?
I dont know! I just have this weird fear that say if "something" was wrong with my phone it could emit more radio waves than it should normally. Its one of my partially unfounded scary thoughts. /blush
I'm honestly not sure which network type would create the most interference. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. Its just the wave shaking the speaker (to put it in non technical jargon). Pretty sure it has more to do with frequency than the strength of the signal.

The TDMA-based modulation scheme used for 2G GSM is notorious for "GSM buzz" at the TDMA frame repetition rate.
3G shouldn't be causing such things but 2G will.

Interesting, good to know.
A little more detail:
With classic GSM, the scheme for allowing multiple handsets on a cell site was to assign each handset a time slot to transmit in. When it was that handset's turn, it would transmit a short burst in its timeslot. The end result is that with GSM, a handset's transmitter pulses on and off rapidly. Many other electronic devices have circuitry that acts as a rudimentary RF detector and demodulates the "on/off" pulsing.
With CDMA-based systems (either cdmaOne/CDMA2000, or UMTS), fancy math is performed such that handsets transmit simultaneously and semi-continuously when talking to a tower. As a result their RF envelope is constant and doesn't demodulate to audio frequencies with simple envelope detectors (which is what many speakers and audio amps behave as with interference like this.)
Thanks for the info entropy. Always wondered what exactly the issue was.

I've had the amaze for two weeks now and for the most part love it aside from a few nagging issues.
1) Headphone jack is sensitive to movement (music will cut in and out sometimes if i am walking with it in my pocket)
2) Can't receive pictures. (I've set up my mms to have a max size of 3500k but still not able to receive anything)
3) My signal will cut out randomly for minutes randomly even in places that i usually have full bars. It doesn't just say no signal but my "mobile network" option says its off and its greyed out so i can't try to turn it back on.
Any one else having these issues or have any suggestions? thanks.

Update.
1) The headphone issue of the sound cutting in and out only occurs with some headphones, so I'll just need to find a pair that work fit perfectly I guess. But it made still need to be fixed by sending it in.
2) After calling in, Telus tech support were able to work there magic and fixed the MMS problem. They said it sometimes happens when a new phone is just activated.
3) As for the signal, I found out that these new 3g, 4g phones only use the HSPA+ networks and cannot use the 2g (CDMA/ GSM) network to save battery. The 2g option is there to be used when roaming they said. That doesn't solve the random loss of signal but it has occurred for a while now so hopefully it won't happen much more. Hope this helps anyone else that might be having the same issues.
The only issue I have is the case that Tmobile provided, the hole for a typical headset and power/usb was too small.
I ended up getting the ibeats from beatsaudi. Sound awesome and fit fine, the only issue I'm having with those is the buttons for vol up/down/call dont work due to the fact thats its made for iphone. But other than that their awesome.
Maybe i'll try those on for size. Hopefully i'll find some cheaper ones that work though in the meantime because those aren't cheap.

Amazing as in amazingly bad for the price. I'd Recommend AKG or Sennheiser. Failing that even some V-Moda's would be a good deal. Personally I use Custom made triple driver In Ear Monitors, and the Amaze, with the DSP running, is extremely good indeed soundwise. FAR better than the Ipod Touch I sold.

SECOND UPDATE
Turns out my headphone jack was defected, so I exchanged it for a new amaze, and so far so good.
As for the network connectivity, for TELUS users we don't have the option of 2g, so when I had the settings as wcdma/gsm my guess is the phone was trying to connect to the gsm network but when it couldn't connect it left my phone unconnected to any network. So far with the settings as wcdma only I haven't had any issues. I will see if this will stand the test of time.
I am having 2 of the problems you listed.
On the bus this morning, not only was it cutting out, but completely disconnecting and stopping the playback. As i put my hand in my pocket, I hit the play button and offensively heavy drum n bass started blasting. So good external speaker from what I can tell
I find I will have full coverage, and my texts will not go through. I will try out wcdma only and see if that helps.
I haven't tried receiving picture messages yet... :/
I guess I will pop by Wind on my lunch break and see if the headphone jack problem happens on another phone.
Make that all 3 issues :/

definitely take it in sooner than later to see about the headphone jack, because although they don't always advertise most companies have a 30 day grace period where you can just trade it in the store for a new one instead of shipping it off and waiting weeks for htc to look at it.
Some people say that some phones are just going to be defected since they are so new, so hopefully if you swap it the new one will work good like mine did.
Ask the tech person to do some initialization for your phone that should be able to receive mms afterwards.
As for the connectivity mine still loses signals from now and then, I guess i'll just have to live with it for now and avoid those areas as much as possible. Good luck
I tried the headphones that came with the phone and they work fine, so I guess I just have to be careful which headphones I use, and try out any before I buy them.
I went in to ask about the MMS, and learned my "unlimited everything" plan didn't have MMS... odd. I should still receive them when someone sends them, and I don't. They told me to go to another location *sigh*.
Update on the loss of signal problem, it only happens when I'm in my basement. I had someone call me while I had 3 bars, and I got a text saying I was about to have roaming charges. I think this has more to do with my provider than the phone. To combat this, I'm just going to leave my phone upstairs and access it from my laptop when I'm in the basement. I'm having problems rooting my phone, though... but that's for a different thread.

Yeah, I noticed on engadget the phone didn't come with them either. I guess Canadians get headphones?
I've noticed that my recently bought St18i is kinda strange during calls.
After just 30 sec I get headache and warm around the ear exposed to the call.
This thing didn't happen with Htc diamond 2. I just can't use the cell close to the ear.
Previously I used to get this kind of sensation after at least 1h of continous call.
Instead with this phone it's enough just 30 sec..!
So I was wondering, does anyone here have experienced this kind of issue?
Hello,
That depends on the band you are using and how far is the tower.
The higher the band and the more far is a tower - the more power it will emit.
These days you should always use wired hands-free device as we are getting more and more electrostatic load and various power wavelengths.
I doubt your unit is emitting more, they all undergo checks and tests, unless you bought it from black market Indian makers.
It's natural that the phone and the area around it will get warm during calls, but it should not be cause of headache.
All our cells and atoms are vibrating, we always disturb it with various types of frequencies going trough our body.
Take care.
Well I'll make more investigations about this matter, I want to check it with EMF meters.
Who knows whether an EMF meter is enough or it's needed also a gauss meter...
I have a Ray in USA (unbranded st18a) and I don't have these issues. The phone doesn't even get warm on two hour phone calls. Worth noting is I have excellent reception where I am usually. The phone really shouldn't get warm, especially enough to feel against your ear!
i know this have been discussed before but there is still no solution.
here s my problem: wifi signal drops suddenly when i hold my phone. ive done sevral speed tests. These tests confirm that holding the phone results in a really bad wifi quality. I ve tried eveything.
does anyone have any ideas? even if its hardware moding
thx

Sad to say, in my tests, by tightly holding the phone, especially at the bottom right, the signal strength reduced by about 20dBm.
Sent from my XT910 using XDA
this really sucks since this phone is pretty good and so far its the only BIG problem i found. and no solutions....
Must be a random problem. I have the RAZR and RAZR Maxx and neither has this problem.
For me, on 2.3.6 wifi signal was low, especially taking phone by bottom, but on ICS, both t-mobile ics and latest eu ics, wifi signal is very improved. Hand issue remains, but signal is for me stronger.
well i guess im just going to wait for stock ics update and hope it improves but im guessing the problem wont disappear since this is clearly a hardware issue. and if this is random then im very unlucky
When software fixes a radio that software usually just makes the signal-strength meter show signal that's not really there.
There are apps on Play that "fix" all kinds of radio problems by installing signal-strength icons with the low-strength indications set inaccurately. It *looks* like more signal, but it's the same low signal you had before.
Signal strength has almost nothing to do with reception anyway. Signal/Noise ratio is what's important, and there's no meter for that. One bar of signal in a very RF-quiet area, is much better than five bars in a computer data center.
"Caveet emter, I reckon!"

I have no wifi issues with this phone. The GNex however was unusable at 30 feet from a high-powered Hawking WAP, or an Apple Airport Extreme WAP.
If you have a plastic case, try removing it. Some cases are made with recycled plastic and are infused with conductive material that can act as a Faraday Shield, blocking part of the signal. Easy test, costs nothing but a few seconds...
yea i already knew about the plastic thats why i bought a rubber case. I have to say it helped a little but didnt fix it. the problem is still there.
thx
Haven't seen any problems with my wifi, although I mainly use the 3G simply because I have 4 GB of data a month and I will never use that much when I'm out around town.
If the problem occurs when holding it a certain way wouldn't the simplest solution be to not hold it that way, also be very aware of any metals between you and the router as metals block radio signals, how old is your house, if old enough maybe lead paint, unlikely but just throwing all possibilities out there.
thx for your help. i didnt only test this at home and as for holding the phone im used to hold it like i hold all phones and its pretty annoying if i always have to hold it differently if i want to use the internet
Have you tried the free Play Store app, WiFi Analyzer?
This will help you find out what works/doesn't as it provides more sensitive strength measurements from the chip. It's handy anyway, since it shows WAPs that you aren't connected to. yet.
It's quite possible that your antenna wire bounced off the connector. An insignificant drop of an inch could do that if it was never seated correctly. It would likely operate in a degraded capacity as a result. If you're OK with cracking the case open, that's something quick to check.
How long have you had this phone?
I have never heard anyone complain about the Razr's WiFi reception, so I suspect this is something unique to that phone right there. What is your idea of poor reception? 100 feet, inside, is the practical limit. 300 feet in an open field. Metal wall studs, sheet metal siding, all of these will stop radio waves dead.

Then you haven't been listening. The RAZR is universally acclaimed to have the worst WiFi reception of ANY device since 1999.
im ok with opening it... i actually opened it a couple of times and removed the battery but idk what to look for since nothing is labeled i dont even know where exactly is the wifi ship and antenna. i tested this as close as 6 feet from my router when i leave it on the table i get full wifi signal and speed test at max then i hold it and try... wifi signal goes down and speed test at 3/4 max speed...
thx
It's possible that I have an extraordinary phone then. I decided to compare.
My phone is seeing -60dbm from the Hawking extender that I'm closest to, which is about 20 meters away, behind three stick-frame (pine 2x4 studs, sheetrock) walls. The reading varies dramatically, depending on where I put it on my desk. So let's see what some other WiFi devices do...
My MacBook reads -58dbm. My iPad2 reads -59dbm. An HP Envy 15 reads -65dbm. And a Moto Atrix2 WCS (With Cracked Screen) reads -61dbm.
A transfer of 200MB ("random" data created via linux: 'dd if=/dev/random of=200mb.dat bs=1048576 count=200' so that compression algorithms don't skew the results):
Razr (6.12.79 ICS Black Widow): 9s
MacBook (Lion): 6.5s
iPad2: 10s
HP Envy 15 (Ubuntu 11.10): 7.5s
Moto Atrix2 WCS: 10s
I didn't repeat the test, and that is a busy WAP, but the results are what I expect for battery-operated devices. I also expected the ipad, atrix and razr to lose the race, since they have relatively slow storage systems, which have inherently poor write performance on files of this size (200MB won't buffer at all).
The WiFi cable will look like a white or black wire with a gold junction on the end where it meets the motherboard. I would expect that if you've had the phone open, you would definitely notice a wire hanging loose! I doubt that's the problem, but that wire is a coaxial shielded cable - like on cable TV only really tiny - and you can do all kinds of DIY replacement antenna stuff eg, adding an external jack so you can "beam" WiFi a mile away using a hacked Pringles potato chip can.
I actually think the problem might be RF noise in your environment. Florescent lights (CFLs), computing equipment, HVAC compressors, and motors can effectively "jam" WiFi signals, causing packet transmission failures to increase rapidly as the distance from the WAP increases.
We have a Fluke RF analyzer here, and our WiFi setup is quite good as a result.
Does anyone know if the Razr is unusually susceptible to RF noise? Maybe noise that the Razr generates from the motherboard/CPU/radios/BT? I'm not equipped to test that.
---------- Post added at 09:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:29 AM ----------
Do you have other devices to compare the Razr to?
Did you try pointing all the rubber duck antennas on the WAP straight up?
I just checked an iphone, another ipad, another Razr, and a Dell laptop, and my boss's Razr was technically the winner on signal strength and transfer speed, but let's call it even. There are too many variables, and statistically significant benchmarking is beyond the scope of a forum comment.
The Razr has typical WiFi performance in this environment.
Thank you very much for your post. I did try with the desire z and the evo 3d which are doing jist fine wheather i hold them or leave them on the table: both signal and speed test are amazing compared to the razr (if i hold it). If you could tell me where the wifi ship and antenna are located (a pic maybe) it would be great because when i open the razr all i can see are metal plates everywhere probably for cooling. I dont understand what you mean by pointing all the rubber duck antennas on the WAP...
Thx again
I haven't had a Razr open yet. Even after dropping mine from a motorcycle and watching it slide into a ditch with an inch of water in it. Tough li'l bastards...
The WiFi antenna cable and connector are probably under one of the metal shields.
Most WAPs have 1, 2, or 3 "rubber duck" antennas that you can move to maximize the signal lobe pattern. You can use the WiFi Analyzer app to adjust them, but be prepared to walk a lot...
Others are just a box. The only one of those that *I* know of that works well is the Apple Airport Extreme. The Netgear Wireless-N HD, which is very highly rated, is a P.O.S.: it has a narrow, elongated lobe pattern, and if you're in that narrow lobe, it works REALLY well. If not, you'll be lucky to connect to it. Two people standing 10 feet apart, and one can have great service while the other can't even get an IP address.
The fact that you have other devices working well, and you sound like you've done this quite a bit, I'm guessing you have a problem inside the phone itself.
I manage about 200 phones here, and I haven't heard one word of complaint about WiFi. 3G/4G service? Yeah, lots of complaints about 3G/4G from people out in the woods or working in a valley.
These also work well as a WAP (tethering). We have a few of the Personal WiFi devices - a handheld that converts 3G/4G to WiFi for up to five users - but most people prefer this phone for that.
My old DroidX has a better WiFi antenna, but that's an exceptional phone with only one core: I spit on it. Ptui.

I have 2-3 bars if it lays still on the table or I hold it upside down, if I hold it any way a normal person would it goes to hell.
This is in areas with poor reception but all tested numerous times in the same area. My girlfriend has a xperia s and she has no problem what so ever. My Nokia work phone also works flawlessly.

Very strange, personally i'd be thinking some local interference, is this present everywhere or just at home??
Hmm. So far so good here. No drop in dB with my hand covering the bottom area/bottom back area(s) of the phone.
some people just absorb RF more than others.
this is something i've encountered a lot at work with people using wireless microphones, guitar wireless systems and in ear monitors. certain people just cannot use this stuff because their bodies just absorb so much of the RF that the gear becomes useless if their body blocks the signal in any way.
it's a nightmare to try to explain this to some idiot who just expects his wireless mic to work absolutely perfectly from 600 feet away in a field.

If you watch the S3 disassembly video you can see that it has several antennas, so I don't think the death grip is possible with this phone..

Then how do I deal with Bluto?
Did a test while checking the signal strenght. -89 dBm 12 asu holding the phone upside down, -103 dBm 5 asu while "death gripping" it.
I dont know how "audio db" translates to "signal db", but surely my signal can't be 32x worse while "death gripping" it?

This might be a poor signal on top of the issue seeing as how its not happening to everyone. I managed to replicate this three times with my hand on stopping all signal until its released and bars are back to full.
Go to settings - about device - status. Then take write down your signal holding it normally and upside down.
If you do this we can compare the change in signal strenght on our phones.

Does anyone know, is the G Watch constantly receiving a stream of bluetooth radio waves from your phone since it is always on. Or does it only send bluetooth radio waves when it is sending something like a notification from your phone to the watch?
Am I constantly getting a steady stream of bluetooth radio waves sent to my wrist all day, or is it just intermittent when data needs to be sent to the watch from phone. Also anyone know the SAR rating for the G Watch?
You cant "receive" radio waves. It's not as if the phone is beaming a transmission in a straight line or cone to your wrist. Radio waves are transmitted in all directions like a bubble, and anything within their range receives an equal dosage of them. So if you are concerned about your watch constantly getting data from your phone, then it is really the phone you need to be concerned about, since that is were the transmission is coming from. Your watch receives just as many bluetooth frequency waves as the sunglasses on your head. When the watch talks back it is only sending a momentary burst of data at like 1 milliwatt, which is why bluetooth only operates around 10-20 feet. Very very weak signal. Your phone operates at 100-300x this to communicate with your carrier, and that probably sits pressed against your thigh all day long.

Thank you. I was concerned about my wrist receiving harmful radiation. I try to take my phone out of my pocket as much as i can and leave it on my desk at work.
So the watch isn't generating hardly and radiation at all then right? Most of the radiation is emitting from my phone when bluetooth is always on?
As long as my phone is away from my body i should be good right?

Yes your watch is receiving far more data than it is sending, so if you keep your phone on your desk then both of your wrists are getting equal radiation Although if you want to be technical, whichever body part is further away would be receiving less. Yes the moments where the watch has to update its status with the phone would emit a minute amount of radiation but you are probably receiving just as much if not more every day of your life from a variety of other things anyway that you cant even control.
