[Q] Keyboardless Charging Dock/Stand (DIY)? - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

Hey folks,
has anybody hacked together a dock/stand with charging capabilities other than the keyboard dock?
<tldr>
I'd like to keep my desk as organized as possible, and a tablet standing in a proper (hopefully stylish) dock looks much cleaner and uncluttered, than the tablet with its keyboard dock, as that looks like a laptop randomly put on the table.
</tldr>
Has anybody a good suggestion for a stand/dock, that is capable of holding the transformer AND some potential to integrate the dock-connector cable?
Which tablet stands do you use while charging? Pictures pretty much appreciated
Thank you very much in advance guys!

I use this Targus AWE68TBUS stand

It adjusts to one of three angles and has a slot for the charging cable.

Judging by both the image and the slight dip in the plastic, I assume this was designed for the iPad. Will the android action bar be hidden or blocked in any way while the tablet is docked?

No - the slot isn't that deep, and the front part of the roller is lower than the back,
so no problems with hiding the action bar.

I am currently building a stand out of... sory for this... lego (i know..). This stand has two positions for connecting. One has the usb adapter in it and the other the power charge cable. The usb adapter links to a powered usb hub. So sadly it has to plug in twice to get full functionality, although if you don't want the hub in powered mode then it can be left unplugged.
Sadly it won't tilt to other angles as the two slots for different options stop this.
Why lego?
It lets me try all kinds of different configurations until I'm happy. Once I am then I'm re-making the whole thing in wood - yep - hand carved....
I'll post pictures of the final lego prototype when finished and then the wooden one later.
Oh - if lego wasn't bad enough - the bulk of it is two Star Wars lego kits (tie fighters) so I could actually give it little pilots and Imperial logos if I wanted - sorry....

That is all kinds of awesome! I think you should be unashamed about making this out of lego, it is the stuff of legends and heroes and you just became both in my book (or you will when you're done).

Docking Station - do you want one?

Lets not leave this section empty.
I have seen a lot of discussion about docking stations and I was wondering how many of you X10 users want/need one. This is a rather neglected market from the manufacturers and it seems not many people use docking stations.
I for one cannot go without one anymore. I used to be sceptical, but the convenience of having your phone upright next to your PC (for example) dispalying all sorts of useful info and getting charged is a must. Especially if the station has a socket for a spare battery.
Thoughts?
I want one on my bed table as a charging station/ alarmclock
How many X10 user are there (25/03/10)?!
I would probably buy one, if it was cheap.
I looked at the HTC docking station which was around £20 and though nah.
A docking station is basically just a holder - like a slot in your table. Waste of money IMO, if you've already got a charger.
It's not a shaver or a toothbrush!
But the usb connector is on the top of the phone... so i think there will not be a docking station...

Seconded! I'm thinking about the same thing like I've got for my wife's Nano in the kitchen: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Sony+ICF+C7IP+Clock+radio&cid=17026844560688303975#

I don't mind connecting a top piece manually as long as there is a cradle for the phone in a standing position...
Or something like this? in landscape, so is can be a photoframe and clock in one(app). Calling by external speaker.

Id want a docking! I use them all the time. At the office Im only using bluetooth anyway, so Its nice just having the phone standing, so I can see whos calling.
Also great to see time, weather whatever just in front of you!
Im almost embaressed to admit it but I use a small piece of velcro on my phone and in several places it habituates, my desk, nightstand, car. Feels like slumming but remarkably functional and I actually went back to this from a docking station because I prefer it.
Both the Droid and Nexus One have pretty nice docking stations, lets hope Sony puts out something nice. As for the velco idea... interesting, but I would never do that to my desk or my phone.
Hardly notice the little bit of velcro that is on the phone and in the other places not at all. Its all about placement man, I would bet you wouldnt see any of them unless pointed out to you. Most folks are going to see this solution as getto, just pointing out an alternative that is surprisingly effective. Those looking for the gucci dock definetly wouldnt be happy.

Lol'd @ gucci dock .
It's a nice solution, especially for phones that don't have docking stations... or the ones available are ugly/unfunctional.
I wouldn't do it, becasuse I hate the idea, but still +1 for ingenuity.
hopefully one will be released soon! i wanna buy one! maybe a white station for a black x10??
i remember when all pda's and pdaphones used to come with a cradle lol. it is useful, and its a pity if you want one nowadays you have to buy them for ridiculous prices like 40 dollars or something.
i dont think the xperia has any other connectors other than the microUSB, unlike the nexus one which has those cleverly camoflaged contacts.
Well, there's somthin like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPII.dll?ViewItem&item=390163600318
Holder and USB hub, so could be connected with a cable to charge and sync.
This is more or less just a concept. but i think that it could work, and look nice aswell. And it should not be too hard to make one.
I am sorry if the 3D doesn't look that good, but I did just make it rather quickly.. so the textures looks kinda messed up etc.
17 minutes left until I can go to bed.. yey..
i was thinking last night, and just because the charger is on the top that doesn't mean a dock won't work. if there was a dock that the phone could sit sideways in, and an app that waited in the background and detected when the phone was docked (plugged into the usb port and landscape) it could display a landscape digital clock screen, with little icons for missed calls and texts etc...
once my dissertation is handed in in a few months i might have a go at developping my first android app!
I just don't know why Sony Ericsson put the MicroUSB port on the Top? Side maybe but on the top? sheeesh

Well I think that it could work out with the design I posted 1/2 posts before yours.
With the docking part at the top. where you can "drag" it up and down. press it down when you have placed your phone there.
that way your phone won't fall out for some reason atleast.
I don't really see why it would tho but..

Nice. Clean and simple. But... "Best Stand Evah!"? I don't know about that.
There is an Ikea store here, guess I will go check one out. Also might look at Target to see if there is something similar.
not very practical for a touchscreen tablet...
but not bad for a Barbie & Ken Drive-In theater scene

There's an IKEA about 20 minutes from my house and just across the street from my office. They do have a lot of cheap disposal quality crap but they also sell some pricey things that are built really well too.
Thinking more about it, Ikea is not that close, and doing a quick search I could probaby find a table easel made of metal for not much more but local. I would only use it for watching movies when not on the couch. hmm like at the office
Is the bottom of the holder large enough that you could cut a slot in the bottom to make the connector accessible without compromising the structural integrity of the stand?

What connector are you referring to? The dock connector on the bottom? The USB connector on the top left? The power connector on the lower left?
Looking at the photos it doesn't look like there is any kind of a groove on the horizontal piece of wood so it would seem the tab could slide off pretty easilly if you're poking at the tablet. But it does look like it's about 50% wider than the thickness of the tablet.
If you're talking about having the power cord plugged into it while you have the tablet in portrait mode then why not flip it so that the power port is on top and not the bottom? That's what I do when I use my Arkon foldable stand and I need to charge the tablet at the same time.

No need for modifying the stand, just place it upside down, most ROMs and application will auto rotate, you will free the connector as well as get a better viewing angles as reported by many.

Looks cool though, I will totally add this to the list when I pick up a Gtab for my lady.
Nice. I've actually been using that same ikea stand for a few weeks now as well. I bought a new one, but found a 7 year old one, which is identical, except that the horizontal shelf sits half an inch higher and the aged wood matches the rear skin protector....

Asus has a whole host of accessories on tap for the hot Transformer tablet/netbook. The keyboard dock was just the beginning. There’s a desktop dock, HDMI-VGA adapter, a very iPad-ish looking folio case, and an adapter to plug in a USB flash drive. Asus has yet to make these official so no word on pricing or availability. They appeared on Asus’ Italian Facebook page about four hours ago. The only thing missing now are the actual Transformers. They’re sold out everywhere and backordered out to nearly irrelevance. Well, there’s always the Xoom. There are plenty of those available along with their entire range of accessories.

the only thing missing now is the tablet itself
Well the keyboard is missing too...
I was lucky enough to get a tablet, but still have no idea when the thing will actually be a "Transformer".
Interesting to see what's in store for us. Thanks for linking.
Hopefully these take off more than the viewsonic g-tablet official accessories that never came to fruition.
really nice to see these accessories for those who don't buy the keyboard. especially the dock and case. Actually bought the sleeve case myself considering god knows when i'll get the keyboard.
I like the USB adapter!!
I kind of wish they would sell extra data/charging cables
Here is also a better article with more info a pictures (Italian)

I would like another power cord. This this appears to be proprietary and if it gets lost, there's no charging the damn thing. I don't care if it's only 2 foot long, I'd like another cable.
Looks like Asus is gonna make a bundle off me. Hope there will be accessories from 3rd party soon.
Hmm!
One of each I think! Except maybe not the SD card reader.
But given that the price of the simplest one is quite high I guess theyre going to be a bit pricey!

I agree, this has been way over-looked, If I damage or loose my existing cable I'm stuffed, don't want to be in that situation.
Hopefully some 3rd party will start pumping them out on eBay or the likes soon.

So when you dock the tablet, you don't need to fiddle wit find the mini hdmi cable just to get a full desktop replacement.
I'm actually very excited to get the SD adapter (wish this was on the tablet instead of the miniSD). I'd like to do some quick photo editing right after shooting.
i wonder if the USB port will work with game controllers and other USB stuff like 3.1 will allow.
Im interested in the USB dongle.
Would this mean that we can have external storage like a HD preloaded with media?
If so, it would be perfect for road trips to load movies on a drive and have the munchkins entertained..
On that note: anything out there that allows the tablet to hang/attach to the headrest on a car seat?

DIY SGS2-based laptop-dock... stupid or not?

So I had this idea to make a little laptop dock for my phone.... not really all that practical but I kinda want to do it anyways.
The idea would be to have a wooden laptop; two flat pieces of some hard-ish wood with a hinge in the middle. Then I could route-out sections to sit a screen, keyboard and my phone in.
I found a chinese company that sells 7-inch LCD with HDMI input, but I'd rather find something like a 10-incher to be more netbook like. (if anyone knows of any, do let me know) Also, does anyone know what output resolutions the GS2 supports?
The phone would sit in the position of a trackpad, and actually act as one too. Above it would be a bluetooth keyboard, and in to top piece of wood is where the LCD would sit. Making the right type of hinge is important.. I thought it would be kinda fun if there were knobs on the side I could tighten to fix the lid at a certain angle. Pretty mechanically simple. I'd just have to somehow cut a channel to feed the hdmi from base to lid.
It would be kinda janky and steam-punkish but that's why I like the idea. Attached is an equally janky diagram I whipped up in like 10 seconds.
What do you think? Stupid project I shouldn't even try, or fun (albiet impractical) project?

Buy a Galaxy Tab... Honeycomb is much better optimized for larger screen sizes. Also, I would prefer aluminum over wood.

You have all the right ideas with the components. Just have somebody cnc you the case out of aluminum. And I wouldn't use the phone as a track pad, its not slippery enough. Figure out a way to use an external track pad, one that's painted so your finger glides across it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
You'll need power for the MHL/HDMI adapter.
If you're going to get that hackish - why constrain yourself with the GS2?
DIY a tablet using an LCD, a touchscreen, and a BeagleBoard or PandaBoard.
(PandaBoard is one of the ICS reference platforms by the way.)
Hey check outhttp://www.hackaday.com ive seen some cool builds on there. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME SITE FOR HACKS.
HaD is awesome. I don't think there are any DIY ICS tablets - but you can get nearly all of the necessary components with a PandaBoard and touchscreen + LCD.
Would the touchscreen + LCD work to make the GS2 like the soon to be Padfone from Asus? Where u plug the phone into a capacative/LCD screen and battery?

What you get !!!
You can charge your Xperia Z1 / Z2 without opening the terminal cover.
Just attach this product to the tip of your micro USB cable, it will turn into a useful charging cable
Provides you a "quick connect" chargeable option without opening the cover each time.
Prevent getting moisture due to incomplete lid because you don't need to take it off.
Terminal is equipped with reverse protection which energizes only when there is a correct connection.
PROS
· The magnet is definitely strong enough to hold the phone in the air and it fits well on the port.
· There is good clearance between the phone and the adapter to have a case on and still be able to use it.
· Is affordable and so far it works.
· It seems to have a good build quality.
CONS
· You CAN”T talk on the phone while charging because the cable eventually falls to side and disconnects.
· You have to keep it in a flat surface in order to work best.
· If at all possible a thinner cable would work best because a stiff cable seems to disconnect it if it gets touch or moved.
Final thoughts
This adapter seems to be a good way to keep the flap on the charging port from opening and closing so much. I think is a good product if you’re willing to spend $15 on it and wait two weeks. I will test the charging speed and voltage and update later!!!!

it is tight, but if you have a very stiff cable like mine and I use the one that came with the phone it does disconnect if you pick up the phone while charging. I can see how a thinner cable could work.
I also think if the magnet was stronger than what it currently is you may take the risk of pulling the whole port out after everyday or every other day use !!!!
