I've played now a little while with it. This is more a construction kit for a launcher than a launcher itself. Very nice idea. I will give the payed versoin a chance.
I installed it a couple of days ago.
I really like the way it handles widgets. I haven't seen any other launcher like it.
Also I like the fact that there is no dock in the main screen.
And it's also very easy to change icons, dock backgrounds or other images (I have just set some of them to transparent).
Very nice feature is also that you can make two differnt homescreen views. One for vertikal mode and one for the horizontal mode. There is also an option to publish the themes you've made by your own. Here you can find a small introduction.

Below you can see some pictures of my first try with ssLauncher. The first two of them are showing the homescreen in portrait and landscape mode. I will give a little work on it and try to make a theme.apk out of it.

I recall a homescreen thread some time ago (last year) that I can't find now. One of the posters presented his homescreen, which had no traditional icons of any sort. Instead, he used a wallpaper that he created and used a launcher that would make certain regions open certain apps. They were not square regions. He mapped the regions by actually drawing them. This way, he didn't need to adhere to the grid structure, and his icons were integrated in the wallpaper, creating a sort of spiral formation of items of various geometries.
Anyone know what I'm talking about? Trying to find that app.
The technique is called "Ninja App." Here's the wallpaper you were referring to:

I made my own beach-themed version a while back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12658060&postcount=63
and here's the thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987059
The wallpaper itself is actually still on a grid...you just use customize the launcher to have more icon places (such as making it 6x6 or 8x8), then placing a transparent icon where the image is on the wallpaper and link the icon to the action you want. I used ADW EX when I made mine so I could hide the status bar and dock, but any launcher that allows customizing the number of icons on the rows/columns will work.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the tidy organization of your post and comprehensiveness of your brief tutorial on how to achieve your desired effect.
I'm even more impressed that you actually found homescreen that matches my description, because I was making it up! I was on a Dell Streak forum and people were showing off their homescreens. One poster had paint blotches spattered across the screen with the title of an app littered within each blotch. I didn't think people would respond to kindly to a Dell Streak description (i.e. "You're in the wrong thread," "wrong forums," etc.), so I wrote up something reasonable and hoped someone would know what I was talking about. I am a Vibrant user, however, so it's all good!
You are very welcome! Always happy to help a fellow vibrant user.
You're description was so on point with that wallpaper, I thought for sure that was what you'd "seen." How funny! I guess you were destined to use it with the Ninja App technique.
Let me know if you have any questions about how to do it. Like I mentioned, I used ADW Ex and made the grid larger to be able to better place the transparent icons, and ADW Notifier for the notifications.
You'll have to post a screenshot of your setup once it's done to show how it turned out!
chronotopia app can be found here.(scroll down page a bit ) remember its beta still so has a few bugs but fully functional. big up knoxcoder for this amazing multifuctional clock/notification widget maker.

im not very good at explaining things but will try my best below.i have spent a lot of time with this app and i am still not fully experienced with it but i manage to get by. its all about trial and error with this beauty but once you get the basics its amazing what you could do.
first i will say the need to calibrate your screen and will most likely be needed, i would do this before starting to make your theme by creating a fake theme just to calibrate,
if your widgets are not showing correct once made then this is why.
this is adw method i dont know about other launchers sorry.
each widget size you will use needs its own calibration.
my tip is to use a 4x4 then it can be reduced once on screen. you may encouter horizontal misfits too. like i said its all trial and error ( and headache lol)
long press screen >add chronotopia widget to screen> choose your widgets size> calibrate> now choose the size it will be on screen> you will get a blacked out box the size of your widget with +/- top bottom left and right now this is where i get my headache lol. you need to get the outline to match the box edges. by pressing the + and - but the + adjusts far greater than the - so be careful because you can alter too much without really realizing due to the outline returning. now all i did is hit the bottom - and right - until it lined up with the box and confirm with centre tick.
ECadro talks about pressing menu for properties and elements but its changed now and swiping changes menus. also when in menus of elements ie. colors/layout etc etc to close the drop down menu press the greyed out title again.
when adding notification elements dont choose the image options you will get f/c you can add images from the miscellaneous child elements by long pressing screen in canvas mode.
choosing misc > image then whilst this is highlighted swipe and choose image again in next menu and its the same as adding fonts from ECadros tutorial.
for alternative advanced editing, the calibration settings etc etc are found in local/data/data/com.marooned.chronotopia/shared_prefs (for me anyway)
p.s you can add your own weather images too which is cooooooool.
lastly please dont bombard me with how to's and stuff, just keep trying and youll get there eventually. (if i can do it !!!!!!!)
thanks and have fun, regards slymobi.
This is my latest.

Great iconset, thank you very much!
I finally found a clean a consistent bunch of icons for my dock.
Weird issue: applying icons to dock with go launcher caused a jagged resize. I had to rescale the icon myself to my native hdpi resolution (72x72).
looks very childish
but nice
Thx for those cool little icons =) Btw can u create icons for root explorer, play store, Mx player, Facebook messenger, ASTRO FILE MANAGER and Contacts

I like these, very much. Are you still updating them?
Its a shame almost 3 months goes by without any word from the op. And the link doesn't even work. Thanks a lot op. Good job. Wtg.
Did the op still updating these? I see he charges for them now and all the free links are gone =/ but they havent been updated since he started to charge?
is there anyway to still get these icons? love the look of them but all the links are dead.
I wish this guy would update the set...
yea, best icons out there, too bad he doesn't update them anymore
The CyanogenMod cLock home and lock screen widget is capable of displaying the time, the weather, upcoming calendar events, and more. It's highly configurable, as you would expect considering the ROM it's associated with, and thanks to popular demand, it's now available in the Play Store as a standalone app. Only now it goes by its original name - Chronus.

Developer David van Tonder has released this app independent of the CyanogenMod project, but he describes it as a functional equivalent to the cLock widget found in CM10.2, just with added support for older versions of Android. In his Google+ post, he mentions plans to release a pro version of the app later this year with additional features. Granted, Chronus isn't exactly a slouch as is. Take a look at the available options.
Users can choose either an analog or digital clock, tweak the font, and pick between colorful or monochromatic icons. A calendar panel opens up events with just a tap, and users can customize the look of upcoming events by tweaking colors and text. And that's just the beginning.
Features:
Support for Android 4.1 and later
Supports adding as a widget to either the Home screen (Android 4.1+) or Lock screen (Android 4.2+) or both
Select between Analog or Digital clock panel and customize the look and feel
Choose whether to show Alarms
Change font bold/normal in Digital Clock, Date and Alarm
Weather panel with Yahoo! weather
Color or Monochrome weather icons
Minimized weather widget support (especially handy on lock screen)
Calendar panel showing a scrollable list of upcoming events
Tapping event opens calendar at selected event
Taping calendar icon opens Calendar at today's date
Change the font color of all text in all panels
Configure widget when adding or from the Chronus app in the app drawer
Highlight upcoming calendar events with custom colors and font bolding
Chronus is free to download, but you need a device running Android 4.1 to get it running and Android 4.2 to take full advantage of all of its features. That may cut out some users, but now that the widget is available in the Play Store, it's more accessible than ever.
Download it here.

Just in Android 4.2 and higher.
Hi, since 12.12.13 there is a new update of google search in playstore.
If i install this update, the google experience launcher changes the grid size (now i have less icons) and some widgets disappear or are resized.
Is there a possibility to change the grid size of the experience launcher desktop with a hack?
I would also like to know what has happened to the grid, as now I cannot have my homescreen as it used to be.
I wonder if this is anything to do with the new 'tablet mode' in the launcher. (install on an N7, then turn horizontally)
Funny, that the launcher is not officially supported on tablets!
For the time being, I have just reverted to GSearch 3.1.8. (or whatever it is!)
I am a developer, but I cannot find any reference to grid size in either the Launcher or Search APKs.
If you know, please reply

There are there modes phone, phabet and tablet. With Android 4.4, tablet mode is not available anymore. To switch between different modes use this tool
I think that it does not depend on the tablet oder phone mode. Other user have the same problem on different devices. (home button not in the middle, widgets deleted and and ...)
Hate to post in an older thread, but this is one of the first results when you start looking for ways to adjust the grid size.
GravityBox[KK] can change the grid size on the GEL launcher, but it's not perfect.

Thanks for this. I was looking for a way to get the grid size larger on my Note 3. The resize ability for widgets is great too. I got it working using the Kit Kat version of Gravity Box, despite the fact that the dev says it may not work on Touchwiz ROMs.
