[Q] Contacts being deleted against my will

Hi guys
Got an issue here and was wondering if someone can help
I have got my contact list how I want it with all phone numbers correct and all contact pictures. I have backed this up to SD card.
All of a sudden I noticed that I was missing some contacts. They had just vanished.
I have my phone set to sync with Gmail as I want to get my emails however, I have a feeling this is where the problem lies. I uploaded my saved contacts file to gmail so that my phone contacts and gmail contacts were identical. All was ok for a few hours then I noticed that contacts were missing again.
Can someone help me out? Is there a way I can sync with gmail and not contacts? I have been through all the options and turned off all sync settings (except mail) but its still happening.
Maybe this is not a sync issue and actually a problem with the phone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help
Hmmm perhaps u can try make sure your contacts r al saved in gmail correctly.. take sync off, delete al your contacts aswel as your backup in sdcard, reboot then turn sync on?

I found when gmail sync'd back to the phone the contact pics were really low res and not worth using
What are you using to back up your contacts...? the installed SE backup will not backup synced contacts, and the android contact backup (you use from the contacts menu) will not backup pictures in the full x10 resolution... With a whole lot of stuffing around, I think I got the best results backing up my system with Sprite Mobile and recovering it through the SE Backup (they're both made by Sprite, but seem to have different options (one's got better backup, the other has better restore - yeah, it's odd, but worked for me, whereas any one on its own would not)
Oh, and have you asked your girlfriend about it...? Mine frequently goes into my phone and deletes contacts she doesn't think should be in there...

Lol, thats funny!
The only way I have found to stop it is to completely stop syncing even with gmail and to use maildroid to get my mail instead

[Q] Too much contacts

Hello,
I've sync my Gmail contacts with my ACE. I use the group "My Contacts" to save the contacts I use with the phone. I mean my primary contacts with phone number. Then I marked the option to show only contacts with phone number and unmarked all the others groups from Gmail, SIM card and phone. Doing that my list contact works well.
The problem is that every time I want to add a unknow phone number to my phone contacts it shows me all the others contacts. And others apps like GOsms shows me all the contacts I have in the phone and SIM card. I don't know what to do in order to avoid this. I tried to remove the unknow group from the phone but I couldn't. It is very anoying.
Is it possible to solve that?
Thanks
I have the same problem... All my contacts have multiplied... even when I do only phone number display checked I still have atleast 2 copies of each contact it sure is annoying only thing we can do is manually sit and delete them which is going to take ages... Go contacts has an option of merging you can try that

I don't have this problem when I use another ROM like Cyanogen. I don't if I could install the contacts application that is used with this ROM.

[Q] Weird problem - contacts keep multiplying

Dad had a weird problem with his Samsung Galaxy - all the contacts duplicated numerous times so that sometimes there were 15-20 of each and it didn't matter if they were stored on the Sim card or in the phone.
Carphone Warehouse told him it was faulty and caused by water damage even though it had never got wet and everything else works fine, so he bought a HTC Sensation XL put the sim card in and then the exact same thing happened, so he sent that phone back and got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which he's had a week, and guess what? it's happened again
All the contacts have been deleted off the sim card so its blank and Dad only entered 6 or 7 contact details into the phone, then today all of a sudden there are multiple copies of some of the contacts - any ideas what the cause is or for a cure? Dad is on Orange pay monthly and has already had a replacement sim card in case the first was faulty.
Cheers
Perhaps it could be synced Google Contacts?
Or any other kind of contact syncs?
Any kind of backup (Titanium Backup, MyBackup, etc?) that would restore the numbers?
Did he/you install any apps before this happening? Any contact/phone/sms/dialer apps perhaps?
No he hasn't synced with Google Contacts apart from when its forced on the Nexus, but he has no contacts to sync anyway as he dosen't use a computer, his only contacts are what he's manually entered. He hasn't downloaded any apps at all, and uses the phone as it come out the box - he only has it cause he likes the big touchscreen and he can see it ok, he dosen't use any features apart from calls, texts, email and the camera.
Hmm, sounds very weird indeed.
You said you tried both getting a replacement SIM card and a brand new phone, but not at the same time?
I would suggest doing a factory reset and a SIM card wipe (or even a replacement if easily possible) at the same time, and then try and enter 1 NEW phonenumber (not one that's been in the phone/SIM card before) and leave it for the amount of time that it took before it began multiplying the numbers before, to see if it does it again.
If it doesn't, try and enter some of the old numbers into the phone, and so on.
If it does multiply, then I don't know what's wrong.

Contacts you manually enter are automatically set to sync with Google contacts. What I think is happening is you keep resetting the phone and he enters in the contacts before all the Google contacts from the previous times are being restored therefore all the multiples are being synced together. So let the phone sit after a restore. The multiples should show up after a little bit. Go through and delete the duplicates and see if they come back.

Cheers I think you may have solved the problem
I logged into Dads google account online and found his contacts and there were 529 with loads of duplicates (40 or 50 of some), so I deleted the lot, turned off autobackup to google and sync on his phone and did a factory reset - he now has no contacts on the sim card, in the phone or stored with google so hopefully when he re-enters them they won't duplicate, I'll give it a few days then see what happens if I let it back-up and sync, but I've a feeling its sorted it.

APP for managing contacts

Im having issues trying to clean up my contacts Ive got many doubles and I want to clean up my phone and SIM contacts its Ive tried before to delete them but they never seem to delete from my contacts.
EDIT: NVM fixed it
For those of us that might be having the same problem, would you mind enlightening us on how you fixed it?
Do it from a PC. Yes it is painful but it only has to be done once. I do not recommend using SIM contacts for a very simple reason. Many people today have email and phones plus IM etc datafilled with their contacts. Only phone numbers are supported on the SIM and even that has a limit of 1 number per contact. so if you have a contact with 4 phone numbers, that will be 4 contacts on your SIM and in your device when you import them.
I know this is the way it worked for GSM long ago and I don't think this has changed.
Best workaround is sync to Google. If you want a local copy after cleaning things up on a PC, export you contacts to your external SD card...
I cleared the data from contacts and contact storage from manage applications and then I synced my google contacts
There is app to delete duplicate contacts ..sorry I forgot the name...but its very effective...and also just like others stated always use google to sysnc contacts...this way when getting new phones...its easier and you wont have duplicates...

Duplicated contacts...

Hi!
I have this really annoying "bug" where every single contact us duplicated several times(most contacts have 5 duplicates!).
I could batch delete the duplicates, but the problem is they would probably duplicate again and again...
So, what exactly causes this problem?
Just for the record, my father has this problem too(stock S2). I'm currently running MIUI but the problem seems to not be related to the rom.
Cheers guys, thanks.

The Problem can be because you have configured multiple accounts with your Phone and each one of these has the contact data.
Try this and let me know if it worked.
Go to Contacts > Menu > Contacts to Display
Here select the accounts, the contacts of which you want to be displayed.
A more polished way would be to create an Excel Spreadsheet of all your contacts and then upload it with a name in Gmail. You can then enable only this list contacts to be displayed in the Contacts application.
In case it's not a displaying problem - I use Wondershare MobileGo for Android.
Intall the free version, connect your phone to the computer, open the program and under "contacts" tab there is a "De-duplicate" button. It will help you merge duplicated contacs.
There is a workaround for this problem. You can use Go Backup to take a backup of all your existing contacts.. there is an option to merge duplicate contacts as well.. after taking backup delete all your contacts from mobile; sync to server and then restore your contacts..

Thank you every one for help! However,I found the best solution to be Contact Remover Plus app(paid). It took five minutes to delete all duplicates.
Anyway, thanks guys, some good info here!

That suggestion about dealing with multiple Google account on your phone is good. Works for me. First, I delete the duplicate contacts on my Android phone and then extract them as Excel files. Finally, the data are uploaded to Gmail. Problem solved. Thank you so much.
